I agree that old comics are really special, but there are some really amazing ones being done in recent years. They're not kitschy-cute, but they are wonderful reads.
Like Neil Gaiman's legendary Sandman series. Or Alan Moore's Watchmen. Or his V for Vendetta--I'm sure you've seen (or heard of) the film.
My current interest, as I said in the comments is Fables, by Bill Willingham. I picked up the first volume only recently and loved it! It's about fairy-tale characters living in modern-day New York, and it's kind of thriller-ish in tone, dealing with crime-solving. In the comic, Snow White has divorced Prince Charming after he cheated on her with her sister Rose Red, and is now a high-ranking officer the fairy-tale government. The Big Bad Wolf is the lead detective, basically, and many other characters show up.
It won 14 Eisner awards, and IGN called it "the best comic book currently being produced!" I'm just a wee bit happy to recommend it.
