  1. You have a black widow spider as a pet - are they not the ones who kill

their mates after they have mated?

They don't always, but yes they can. It's purely instinct. They feel something in their web so they eat it. The male has to be very careful when going in to mate a female. He has to be very slow so that his vibrations don't make her react to him like food.

She's very pretty though, i found her in the corner in my bathroom :)

  2. Hey!

I just joined the community, but have been a Mika fan for over a year now - got into him when I lived in Paris in 2007. The concert in San Francisco (2/12) made me really obsessed for a while, but I am slowly coming back to sanity.

Anyway, I'm graduating from college (in CA) this June and will be traveling around Europe this summer. Best part of the trip? My itinerary conveniently follows Mika's tour schedule. I plan to see (and have tickets to most of them):

    7/3 Rock Werchter - Belgium

    7/4 Paris France

    7/5 Arras Main Square Festival

7/8 Amsterdam (might not make it, have 3 tickets if you want them)

7/23 Paleo Festival -- Nyon Switzerland (NEED 2 TICKETS!)

Then again, 6 concerts in a year gives me an inkling that I'm still obsessed.

Let me know if you are going to any of these, it'd be great to have company!

    Thanks,

    MS

    Welcome to the MFC!!!!

  3. no matter what we say, we all have to care for the wildthings in life

Yes, we are responsible for their deaths, we should be responsible for their lives. That's why I'm involved in the Recreation/Fish/Wildlife program. I wish to speak for those who have no words to speak for themselves.

  4. Hi cyber Grandma,

I started off being political, better get going underground, or I may get recognised:thumb_yello:

How are things you sexy thing, worked out what i'm up to tonight?

I try very hard not to be too political on these kind of places, they can quickly whip up into a lather that you really don't want. I don't like making people upset about stuff...so I try to keep those opinions to where it matters, like in my wildlife class :)

  5. I didn't know they become like this when they are glown.

    Good lesson.:thumb_yello:

Apparently, they eat them fried in batter(tempura) here - I've never tried though.

    photo%2034683.jpg

Wow!!! That would be tough to eat! LOL :) Its grainy like sand is inside the flesh of the plant, would feel VERY weird on the teeth!

  6. no I am not married, I am with my children, alone...naturally :thumb_yello:

:thumb_yello: My children are the 4 legged kind! Actually, I guess right now my child is an 8 legged one....

Ok...everyone..don't scream...but I have a Black Widow Spider for a pet :) She lives in a big jar in my room and I feed her bugs :) She's amazing really!

  7. :woot_jump::yay: Well done Crystal - 1000 posts!!!!

Yes - I have seen that seagull before!! :lmao:

THANK YOU!!!! :) Only took me a month and a half to get to 1000 :)

Oh my dad sent me the story on that seagull awhile back, and it still makes me laugh every time I see it. Him walking so nonchalantly into the store, grabbing the chips and rushing out! Until today though, I never saw the end part where he put them down and started eating LOL :) Just the part where he walked in and nicked them LOL :)

  8. Wow - I wonder what the horse-tails I have from Miina

    taste like!!

Oh well - thats the fun of MM - trying different things!! :thumb_yello:

I don't know! I've never even heard of them before, I guess they're a japanese thing. They have alot of interesting foods over there :) We have some japanese exchange students here in the dorms, and it's always neat when they get packages from home :)

  9. good evening everyone,

if they are culling animals because they are a problem, should do that with some humans, oops you already have the death penalty in America, anyway some criminals deserve it more than, natures animals, who we took their living space.

    was that to political?

Oohhhh baby....are you already married? LOL I'm totally with you there hon. I could go on for hours LOL *hugs*

  10. thanks for the link.

boy, you can just find anything in a few seconds,

    the internet is spooky sometimes!

I'm going to take a nap now, catch you later!

Yep, I love the internet. I can usually confirm or deny or clarify something within moments, thanks to Google!! :)

    Thanks for that :)

Yea pretty neat, another story said that the coyote was only about a year and a half old, so not long from it's mother, and probably didn't know how to care for itself properly. They said that it was healthy, probably was just hot and felt the cooler air coming through the open door and thought...hmm....coooooooool.

    POST NUMBER 1000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wendi i'm sure you've heard about the thieving seagull from Scotland, right?

    http://www.metacafe.com/watch/751968/shop_lifting_seagull/

  11. What kind of plant are they - what will they taste like?

They are a small plant, grow in the wet soils, but I don't think they would taste very good!!!!

The First Nations native indians used it to scrub dishes with. It's quite coarse grained, and I don't think you really want to eat it LOL

As the plant dries, silica crystals that form in the stems and branches give the plant a scratching effect, thus accounting for its historic use in polishing metal, particularly pewter.

    According to the University of Maryland Medical Center;

"Today, horsetail continues to have medicinal value. The plant's stems are rich in silica and silicic acids, which help mend broken bones and form collagen, an important protein found in connective tissue, skin, bone, cartilage, and ligaments. Therefore, horsetail is used as a supplement to treat and prevent osteoporosis."

  12. Crystal - I could not kill anything either - not even a spider (but

I do manage to severely stun wasps!!! :sneaky2: )

Leona - I had a mental picture of the coyote feeling too hot, and

just going for a lie down in the cooler - so funny!!!!! :roftl: :roftl:

I can kill wasps or ticks or mosquitos without compunction. They're out for my blood and THEY CAN'T HAVE IT, so it's them or me. Most insects I do not kill though. I remove them from the house and put them outside. I'm the bug remover for the college residence here. If they have a bug, they come get me and I take it out LOL.

But those big showy animals, I don't think I could. If I was really hungry and had to feed myself or my family, I could shoot a deer or an elk, but I couldn't do it unless it was for food. I can go fishing, but I know I will be eating the fish, so I can do it. I just can't kill unjustified. Not just because something is somewhere it's not supposed to be.

    your classes sound very interesting!

I'd have a hard time shooting a problem animal too.

especially a big, BIG kitty cat!

yeah :( totally. We have cougars here, and sometimes they have to shoot them because they're a problem. I couldn't do it.

  13. I meant this:

    118854283_69451f3fe1.jpg

Are they available only in Asia?

Hope she and your MM are OK.

We definately have those plants here in BC. They are called "Equisetum arvense" in latin :) They made us learn that one in my forest ecology class in first year :) They used to be the size of trees back in the days of the dinosaurs.

I hope she is ok too...maybe it's just a long time to Scotland from Canada!

  14. when they finally shot it, some bullets hit the air conditioner & side of this house- the guy inside was giving his baby a bath nearby, his whole family freaked out and hid upstairs, they didn't know what was going on. The bullets could have easily hit his window & gone in.

It was a very close call, amazing noone got hurt as this cougar was being cornered & stalked for about 9 hours before they killed it!

    they are checking its DNA.

Last summer, downtown in the BUSIEST part of the whole city, a coyote walked into a sandwich shop, very hot day, they have it on security camera. it just walked in, climbed up into the open refrigerator thing where they had bottles of pop & water & laid down for a rest!

Him, they were able to tranquilize & let him go way out in the suburbs.

these kind of things just prove to me that humans are taking up too much room. There is so much urbanization that we are squeezing out the habitat of the animals who have lived here for thousands of years before us. It's so unfair that we are so conceited. Oh I could start a real rant about this..but I think perhaps this is not the proper venue for such a rant LOL

I have a thing about humans LOL

  15. Thats interesting Crystal! We dissected cows eye balls, and pigs

hearts when I was at school - but they dont do that now.

The only way I would see a cougar or bears insides would be

    if they swallowed me!! :roftl:

Yeah we did that at highschool too :) man, that was soooooooooo long ago.

This was way different than anything I did at highschool. These are all animals that had to be put down by the Conservation Officers for one reason or another. The bear we did was just a little bear, like...still a cub :( It's mother had been killed and it was eating garbage and wouldn't stay away after being relocated...so they were forced to shoot it :( But we have a really bad black bear problem here, there are so many of them that it's not financially viable to relocate. Poor little bears.

I've learned so much from this course, I'll never look at wildlife the same again. I don't think I could be a conservation officer, I don't think I could kill the problem animals when it needed to happen. I'm a softie. I'd rather study them than kill them.

  16. I am fine thanks!! :) Hope your exam goes ok!!

What kind of job are you looking for?

I think it will go wonderfully :) It's my Fish Management exam, which I love, so I'm sure I'll do great :) Tomorrow is my Wildlife Management exam, which I am excited about. My worst test was yesterday, so I'm glad it's over with and I hope I passed :)

I'm hoping to get a job in fish management this year. I'd love to have a job mucking about in streams for the summer! :)

Best of Luck to you on exams!!!

nothing exciting here, in fact I may go take a nap before I go to work.

ooh I love naps :) I'm sitting here in my room, just woke up, listening to a CD that a friend of mine gave me of songs he wants me to learn so we can sing together :)
