MFC History

Recommended Posts

This is the MFC history that I wrote for the MIKA birthday present project last year. I have some other things to add to it, so I'm going to keep the thread closed to comments for now. Give me a few hours... :thumb_yello:

JULY 2009

The History of MikaFanClub.com

Once upon a time, there was a young man named David Geere, who was a fan of a new pop singer called MIKA. David loved the new singer so much, he started an internet message board about him. And so, on 5 January 2007, MikaFanClub.com was born.

Very quickly, both the singer and the message board grew in popularity. By the end of February 2007, the MFC (as it was fondly referred to) had nearly 2000 members posting hundreds of messages, news articles, videos, and more each day.

Geere, user name Sunny Monkey on the MFC, added a few moderators to oversee conversation on the message board. By April 2007, he turned over partial responsibility and ownership of the MFC to Dean Hunt (deano) and his partner Elena (mikablog). Deano and mikablog appointed moderator FREDDIESDOUBLE as an admin, and as the forum grew he recruited other moderators to help keep a watchful eye over the MFC.

A spirit of camaraderie formed on the MFC -- members from all over the world bonded and became internet friends. Those friendships extended to real life and grew stronger as Mika toured and MFC members met each other at his shows.

In November 2007, the membership of the MFC petitioned Mika, looking to become his “official” fan club, in the hope that the MFC would then be able to obtain important information (tour dates, album release dates, etc.) in a more timely fashion.

At a gig in New York City in February 2008, one of Mika’s management team told fans that Mika had indeed become the owner of the MFC. Since then, the administrators and moderators of MFC have worked with Mika’s management to guide the forum.

Today, the MFC has 13,598 registered members, with about 300 or so active posters each day. We have had 18,069 threads with 2,369,538 posts over the course of our 2 ½ years. We have members from all over the globe, on nearly every continent (no one from Antarctica yet!).

The MFC mod/admin team currently has 10 members from a variety of countries around the world:

FREDDIESDOUBLE – UK

dcdeb – US

Standard Toaster and lollipop_monkey– Canada

Christine – Canada

Niki27 – Belgium

robertina – Italy

Queenie – Spain

happikali – Australia

guylainem123 – Canada

We are constantly looking at ways to promote MIKA and recruit new members to MikaFanClub.com, which we feel is THE destination for all the latest news and information about MIKA.

OK, let's see how I do...

In the beginning there was Sunny Monkey.

Gill and Cautionary Wife became moderators on 15 February 2007.

A few months later, deano and his significant other mikablog took over as admins.

Then Freddie, Steph, and Sivan were named moderators. (24 April 2007).

Then Steph exited, Sivan moved into looking after graphics more, and we added dcdeb, nico_collard and Happikali (12 July 2007).

Then we added Sasje (12 October 2007).

Sasje stepped down the end of December 2007.

On 31 December 2007 Diana, Niki27 and lollipop_monkey were named mods,
a few days later added Queenie, too.

nico_collard stepped down and we added Christine on 6 March 2008.

Then Robertina and guylainem123 on 14 January 2009.

Then Diana stepped down, so we added Blue Sky on 17 November 2009.

Fmbm and Droopsy were named mods 15 February 2010.

Queenie stepped down in May 2010 and Happikali in June 2010.

FREDDIESDOUBLE announced that he was leaving his role as admin in July
2010, but retaining his moderator status. In September 2010, he left the moderator
team altogether.

In December 2010, Niki27 left her moderator position.

In September 2012, Fmbm left the moderator team. We added mellody (Karin) and Mari62 (Marina) as junior moderators at that time.

In 2015, we added Kumazz and Silver as moderator aides, helping to keep threads organized and other duties.

At various points throughout 2016, Christine, robertina, lollipop_monkey and Blue Sky retired from active moderating duties. They are still MFC members, but not as active as previously.

In September 2016, we elevated Silver to junior moderator status. We also added camille*, Sabine64, Lena Machu and Gabry74 as moderator aides. In November 2017, Gabry74 was removed from the moderator aide role.

As of early 2021, various other moderators had retired or gone on hiatus.

Although Mika's fan base has grown, the message board format is not as popular as it once was, and much of MFC's activity takes place on social media like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. We haven't added to our moderator team in some time as there is much less activity to monitor.

The current admin/moderator team as of May 2023 is:

@dcdeb - Admin
@mellody - Moderator
@silver - Moderator

@Kumazzz - Junior Moderator
