ISTANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News

Mika’s frantic stage energy lit up the Miller Freshtival on Saturday to kick off Istanbul’s summer of open-air shows.

Launched with the motto of “Turkey’s freshest festival,” the second annual Miller Freshtival presented a rich lineup consisting of The Raveonettes, Prins Thomas, The Phenomenal Handclap Band, as well as some of Turkey’s most promising indie rock bands – but it was Mika that surely stole the show.

Apart from Mika, wonderful weather and an audience craving for summer festivals after a long winter helped Miller Freshtival brim with fun.

“I always say, a great show happens when half of the show comes from the audience,” said Mika, adding that the crowd at Maçka’s Küçükçiftlik Park played their part perfectly.

The audience sang with the performer during hits such as “Relax, Take It Easy,” “Rain,” and with concert-closers “Grace Kelly” and “Love Today.”

His vocal eccentricities, most likely an emulation of Freddie Mercury, left aside, Mika proved to be a great entertainer. He did not stop for even a minute during his show: he danced, jumped and even played the role of a killer who assassinated his bandmates before playing dead. A giant inflatable woman’s leg and dancers wearing wedding dresses and animals masks added to the mad fun happening onstage.

Before Mika, The Raveonettes gave an electric performance reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine thanks to their noisy guitar tunes. The Danish duo did little talking with the audience and instead let their gritty sound interact with spectators.

Norway’s Prins Thomas did not say a single word while delivering some of the most energetic tunes of the day during his hour-long set.

However, it was almost the opposite for Brooklyn’s The Phenomenal Handclap Band: The band chatted with the audience between their songs, which were a modern twist on a sound reminiscent of 1970s Motown.

With all the bands on its bill, Miller Freshtival kept its promise. It helped Istanbul’s music fans hear some of the freshest tunes around.
