  1. We Are Golden - Very epic, anthemic and the perfect way to kick off an album. What I feel drives this song is that it makes great use of the soft/loud dynamic, more so than in any other Mika song. Utilising TWO different choirs, you would think the song would end up sounding cluttered but they fit into the music seamlessly. The third verse is the best part for me, such excellent chord progressions and some of Mika's best singing. Blame It On The Girls - A very instantly accessible song (most Mika songs are, to be honest), The hip-hoppy handclap-laden production gives it a diffenrent vibe from the live version, but in a really good way that sets it apart from anything Mika has done before. I LOVE how more and more instrumentation is added as the song progresses from the start of the verse to the end of the chorus - it seems to split the song into four distinct parts (he's got looks.../like lovers.../blame it on the girls who.../blame it on the girls, blame it on the boys) Upbeat yet laid-back - brilliant Rain - One of my favourites on the album - it just makes me want to dance - and other people seem to like it the most when I show them some of Mika's new songs. Although I feared it may be overproduced when I heard the 30-second itunes clip, it's actually really sparse at the beginning and builds up excellently - in fact, to me it's probably the best transition from a verse to a chorus i've ever heard. Yes, the professional reviews are right, it IS reminiscent of Pet Shop Buys, but it's all the better for it. Many upbeat songs like this in the charts are a bit vacuous and lacking in depth but this just has such a lovely melody behind it, which is why it worked so well as an acoustic, slower song as well. Dr John - My current personal favourite from the album (but my opinion is changing all the time), and this is because of the beautiful minor-to-major key change - it goes from a melancholy, reflective feel to a rousing, happy singalong just like that. It's such a pity that it won't be released as a single. More description of said Doctor would be nice, though! I See You - It gave me shivers when I heard this song being performed live on the Channel 4 special and it didn't disappoint on record. Haunting melody and lyrics combine to create what, for me, is Mika's best ballad yet (I never thought Happy Ending would be topped). I felt very empathetic towards the person speaking in the lyrics, as i myself am a shy 16-year-old and experience roughly the same thought process. This means that I connect with the song very well and therefore probably have a biased perspective on it - but hey, what does it matter - I love it Blue Eyes - This is the first song which i only feel is good, rather than excellent (I had the same feeling about Any Other World on LICM - coincidentally it is also track 6, weird). Don't get me wrong, It has a very nice tune and a relaxing Afrobeat-y feel to it but I just don't get into the song on the same level as any of the ones before it - maybe it is over too quickly. Not a let-down, by any means, as I happily listen to it and enjoy it - it's excellent in the field of music in general - but my Mika standards are so high! Good Gone Girl - Another one of my favourites due to the fact I think it tells the best story out of all the songs and is also one of the most catchy - I can't help but sing along to the chorus, especially the "dance, dance" bit . It's lyrically somewhat similar to Lily Allen's "22" but more flowing and transitional. In any case, it's musically far superior. Like lollipop monkey, I don't like that the "she's walking around..." bit has been merged with the "oooh oooh oooh"s - the lyrics are really poignant at this point and I wish they were given their own space, at least during the first refrain, so that they could be more easily heard and felt by the listener. In fact, it's kind of wrecking my enjoyment of the song as I can't hear that part without thinking "if only..." Grrr! Very sorry, but must go to bed now, school tomorrow. Will review other tracks and do overall summary and artwork tomorrow...
  2. WOOO HOOOOOO!! :biggrin2: The 2-cd album was delivered to my house in Scotland today - TWO DAYS EARLY because of the HMV pre-order. Everyone over the moon, songs all great (though i'll admit Blue Eyes is only quite good) and flow into each other really well Love the detail and subtle suggestiveness in the liner book as well - there is one mistake though, the credits at the back are headed "The Boy Who New Too Much" lol. continuous looping in car journeys imminent, as well as permanent grins on faces. roll on UK tour...
  3. in all honesty, by the clips it sounds like i am going to prefer Good Gone Girl, Dr. John and Toy Boy to Touches You, but I just feel it's got that well-produced "power-pop" sound that makes it sound like it is engineered towards being a single.
  4. Which songs from mika's new album do people think will be released as singles and in what order? obviously this is different from listing what you think will be your favourite songs - some seem to be more catered to being singles than others, it doesn't necessarily mean they're worse. I think singles will be (in this order) : We Are Golden Rain Blame It On the Girls I See You Touches You
  5. Having heard this epic song on mika's 4music album preview, it left me with shivers... B.E.A.Utiful. Mostly the lyrics in this thread are fine, but i heard "you could be cruel to me without risking the way that i see you.... I feel this ties in better, the idea that it doesn't matter how someone treats you when you are infatuated with them
  6. Listening to the album version, the line's definately "when it rain rain rains" which makes more grammatical sense than "rain rain rain" anyway The repetitions really suit the beat
  7. Once again sorry if this has been put up already (I'm a little slow to react) But the length of all the songs on TBWKTM has been put up on wikipedia as follows: 1. "We Are Golden" 3:58 2. "Blame It on the Girls" 3:33 3. "Rain" 3:34 4. "Dr. John" 3:44 5. "I See You" 4:16 6. "Blue Eyes" 2:49 7. "Good Gone Girl" 3:00 8. "Touches You" 3:20 9. "By The Time" 3:18 10. "One Foot Boy" 2:58 11. "Toy Boy" 2:54 12. "Pick Up Off The Floor" 3:22 Total 40:55 Lover Boy's length is not given. Any comments? what information can be gathered from the lenghts of songs (I See You looks epic) ? Hope to have been helpful
  8. One Foot Boy - the itunes clip sounds great! In terms of what it means, we'll all get a better idea once we can hear the full song but my initial thoughts when i saw the title was that it was about a person with low self-esteem - you know, he feels small or insignificant, as if he is only one foot high. Though the other ideas on this thread are very interesting, to say the least...
  9. tauruslady "edit: did you want the whole page regardless of Mika's snippet?" Thanks very much for the info! :naughty: Don't worry, i can wait, - incessently asking for you to scan in pages would be unfair - wouldn't want the magazine to be not worth reading by the time it came out!
  10. tauruslady - it said in the third page that you scanned on that Rain was one of Q's Q50 for that month (the best new songs to download) Is there any chance we could see the Q50 page early too? Sorry for being greedy you don't have to
  11. The line where your lyrics suggest it's "He's certain there is so much more -- what's the matter?" I thought from his itunes fest. performance it sounded like "while you're sitting there with so much more - what's the matter?" it ties in with the rest of the lyrics, ie. how fortunate/in a good position the guy is... But maybe i'm wrong, does anyone else think the same way?
  12. The reviewer refers to WAG as the "title track", hence the magazine must have thought WAG was the definate album title on time of writing I hope this doesn't make people think TBWKTM is a different album - Q might even have the WAG artwork beside the review Hopefully there's not too many of these kind of problems due to the sudden album name change or it might affect sales
  13. I thought this official review might pacify my need for TBWKTM slightly but it's just made me more impatient! As well as the songs being awesome, it sounds like they all flow into each other really well, cohesion being the one thing slightly lacking in LICM. How in the world did you get the october magazine in august???:thumb_yello: How long do you think it will be before it comes out in stores?
  14. I personally feel that there isn't going to be anything close to a bad/average song in it, but its shaping up to be a bit of a front-loaded album, what with the first 5 songs all being absolutely brilliant (mind you, there is Toy Boy late on and that melody in By The Time is really sticking with me... ) This is all a bit silly and presumptuous and i'll probably change my mind, but these are my first impressions
  15. First, I need to start off by saying sorry if this has been done already and if it has then please point me to the respective thread Ok, I know its difficult and/or judgemental to come to definate conclusions on songs based on 30-second clips, but I just wanted to know what people's initial thoughts were on the the itunes preview clips of the songs from TBWKTM I personally feel that there isn't going to be anything close to a bad/average song in it, but its shaping up to be a bit of a front-loaded album, what with the first 5 songs all being absolutely brilliant (mind you, there is Toy Boy late on and that melody in By The Time is really sticking with me...) This is all a bit silly and presumptuous and we'll all probably change our minds, but - first impressions?
  16. Hi!! just thought i would introduce myself, seeing as as you have so kindly invited me to! a UK resident, I first heard of mika when i saw the Love Today video on a hotel music channel in Spain and was immediately hooked. I didn't buy his album until October '07 but was then instantly familiar with all the singles and it made the album very accessible. I was surprised that there was no filler and, by any rate, all the songs on LICM were excellent and it was on repeat in the car for ages bought the "park des princes" dvd on impulse and was very impressed at seeing such an entertaining, confident performance after just one album. Have since been erupting with anticipation of second album and, when i came across this site it seemed perfect for getting thoughts off my chest before I burst Plus, it is always good to join what is obviously a very closely-knit group of fans I am open-minded and have a broad palate when it comes to music - I regularly check Digital Spy's music section for various news See you in your next thread!
  17. Hi! I personally find Holy Johnny one of Mika's catchiest songs live (i live in hope of a third verse). What do you think are the chances that Holy Johnny or How Much Do You Love Me will be released as b-sides to Mika's forthcoming singles? Do you think that he has even recorded studio versions, or if, even so, he would rather make most of his b-sides live performances like he has done in the past?
  18. Artwork is absolutely brilliant!! :biggrin2: Is only similar to LICM because of logo size and placement, everything else wonderfully different and original:thumb_yello: - kinda prefer it to LICM , maybe just as colour scheme has more contrast of light and dark colours. Also like title, a good summary of being a teenager in my eyes - there's so much whizzing about in your mind that sometimes you wish you could clear your head (conflicting thoughts, etc) Plus , it's this "knowing too much" and thinking of so much from many different perspectives that probably leads MIKA to create such original, out-there-in-an-awesome-way songs.
