    https://pridesource.com/article/qa-mika-on-his-cathartic-new-album-writing-it-on-a-shtty-white-piano-the-consequences-of-being-out/

As much progress as weve made, your song with Italian singer Jack Savoretti, called Ready to Call This Love, is still a rare thing.

Well, let me tell you: Hes a really good looking guy. (Laughs.) Hes charming. Hes like an old-fashioned movie star, but in a 30-something-year-old body.

Is that what appealed to you about him when you chose your male duet partner?

His voice. Firstly, the fact that he didnt even bat an eyelid at the fact that it was a love song and it didnt even come up in conversation. He was just like, Its really beautiful. That was it. Id love to do this, its really beautiful, full stop. And then the fact that his voice is such a contrast to mine and all that, and when you consider that hes a married guy and hes got a kid, it was just a no-brainer for him.

People are gonna say, Why didnt Mika pick a gay duet partner?

And Im gonna say, Well, why not? Thats it. Thats really all I can say. Because its beautiful. And I was asked this, actually, in an interview a week ago for a major gay website in Europe and I said, Have you done interviews with heterosexual couples who have done duets? Girl and guy? He said, Yeah. I said, Did you ever ask them if they were ever actually in a relationship or if they actually wanted to be in a relationship with each other? If they actually found each other attractive? So I said, Whats the difference between two guys? He said, Oh yeah, youve got a good point. I said, Considering you’re coming from a gay website, dont you think you shouldve thought about that beforehand?”

Theres a real push for LGBTQ roles to go to LGBTQ actors, and some people feel the same when it comes to music, especially since duets between two men happen so infrequently.

And I completely respect that. If anything, I really like and I respect that opinion, and I love the fact that a song like this can even provoke a question like that. I think thats a good thing. Its a good conversation to have. Its not like, Oh, is the song cool or not? Its nothing to do with that. Its, Should I have had a gay guy or not with me? I think thats a really good dialogue to provoke.

Could you have even released a song like this at the beginning of your career? Would that have been allowed?

Allowed? I dont know. I would like to say that it wouldve been allowed. But its hard to imagine it wouldve happened. Thats the most diplomatic answer I can come up with. And you know what, besides, I wouldve given songs to my partner to sing, but the truth is that Andy sings like a donkey so it wouldve sounded like s**t. The only thing he knows how to sing are Morrissey songs because theres only one or two notes in them! (Wickedly, playfully laughs.)

And on that note, Ill let you go to bed.

(Laughs.) And on that note, hes gonna kill me.

Funny this article should come out today as just this morning i was listening to the song, thinking to myself "awww what a sweet love song, I wish Andy was singing it with Mika instead".  Seeing Mika say this though...... meh, i still wanna hear him sing it with Andy, they can just use studio magic to make Andy sound better :teehee:

Genius has this line as ' You can see sparks with the light on'.

This song reminds me of Pick up off the floor but less cynical, I dont get the feeling theyre singing at each other but about a broken hearted friend.

I think it's "You can't see sparks with the light on". To me that makes more sense with the next line :dunno:

Another review - I Don't understand why the writer don't like this track. Here is a part about RTCTL, translated into english

    https://www.maxazine.nl/2019/10/07/-my-name-is-michael-holbrook/

On the album there is a terrible mistake, which may have been forced upon him by the record company. There is a duet with no one less than Jack Savoretti, the crooner-lossball whose music I described earlier as the perfect soundtrack of the 70s soft porn film 'Emmanuele Nera'. Savoretti is pushed and promoted in such a way that it is almost suspicious. The man was crazy about Pinkpop this year. Fortunately, that went by quite unnoticed. The song is called 'Ready to call this Love'. Horrifying to hear, and incomprehensible that Savoretti is being promoted here too. Fortunately we can fast forward and then we come to 'Cry', another beautiful typical Mika song with a nice electronic groove and beautiful vocals.

    :o

What'd Jack do to this author?! Doesn't seem like the proper place for them to express their obvious dislike of him :annoyed_h4h:  I'm just glad they don't hate Mika that much!

On the other hand, I think this could also be about a transgender person, or maybe even a drag queen as someone else said.

I thought this too, but that might be because I've been binging RuPaul's Drag Race lately. Everytime I hear the song I think how perfect it is for the show.

BTW until a few days ago i was picturing these kind of shoes:  71Xc4y73npL._AC_UY695_.jpg

To me the most interesting part was that he mentioned doing a "very special" show in London next year, and he said the London gig in November will be much like the NA gigs. And he said he'd love to do more in the UK but it doesn't help if we write to Mika about it, but to his UK promoter Metropolis: https://www.metropolismusic.com/artists/mika-2/ :mf_rosetinted:

Also for another country he said who the fans there should contact if they want him to do shows there.

I need this info for Germany. :fisch:

That Elisa (?) he got so excited about, was that his Italian teacher? I'm so bad at remembering names. 🙈

And what did he answer when someone asked whether he'd do a duet with them? I can tell from the look on his face that the answer wasn't positive (ofc, if he doesn't even know who that is or how they sing), but I think I heard him say "fan"? :dunno:

Lol about the "not so nice" fans :naughty: - I suppose it might've been people who chase stars, and not real Mika fans.

She was on Stasera Casa Mika. On the first episode of Stasera Casa Mika (2017 season) she and Mika sang Lucio Dalla’s "Piazza Grande", she sang her own song "Ogni Istante" and talked with Mika, then she sang "Anninnia, Anninnia" with Eufonia di Gavoi (and Mika a little bit), which she had spent a week learning how to sing just for the show.

I don't think those are all writers -- I'm going to guess that those are the people who performed on the tracks. For instance, we know that David Sneddon co-wrote Tiny Love his name doesn't appear on that listing at all. :dunno:   Mitch is the current keyboardist, Tim is the guitarist/musical director for the live performances, so I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they played on the recordings, too. I guess we'll find out for sure soon!

This was my thinking too. Like, I doubt Paloma and Mama P helped cowrite Tiny Love Reprise :dunno:

    Mika Mika

    MIKAPHOTOS BY: FRANÇOIS ROELANTS

In full triumphant tour of the United States, the singer released her new album in France on 4 October. Exclusively for "Le Figaro Magazine", it has engaged in a self-portrait as sincere original.

Your name is Michael Holbrook Penniman Jr., you were born in 1983 in Beirut. Childhood in Lebanon transit between a blood red, a gilded Paris and London neon black. My name is Mika, I was born in 2006 in Miami. Four songs sent to record labels with colored boxes, global flood. You're this strange boy who wanders sleepwalking at night in the streets of the sixteenth arrondissement. This mute boy whipping a sadistic teacher, who saves. I'm this mischievous character who thrives in a beautiful and warm brothel. This cheerful character who dreams to the rhythm of tap dancing in the living room transformed into silky sewing workshop. Younger, I hated that my name is Michael. At the same time, I never really lost sight of you ... Life in Cartoon Motion was me, you were already. To me the rhythms pop tart as chewing gum from our childhood. These gums perfumed bag of our grandmother. To you the words on the violent transition from adolescence to adulthood.

You always thought there was a certain beauty in sadness, a certain elegance in East spleen. I have always struggled against this intimate melancholy, this anxiety which often gnaws at me. Excessive, chronic dissatisfaction, I do not want to disappoint Michael. When recording the last album in the spring, I even lost my voice. After signing for my first album, I suffered mumps. Side effects of the challenges that soothe me and danger whipping me. Am I up to it? Will I be understood? Did I succeed again to seduce my imaginary judges? What do I punished? Even in the dark, there is fun. If you're about to cry, I tell you "dance".

"You'll end up in jail or famous," repeated our mother. Sometimes the two are similar, then to release you, I create. Artist and craftsman. Create like breathing, eating, drinking. A commedia dell'arte to myself. Shake this giant snow globe with music, turbulent mistress, the colorful costumes and sets absurd. A fairytale of curiosities whose origin is in these cases full of cassette tapes you classais by emotion and by color or theater in these models you used to collect passionately. Create to cultivate the difference, maintain joy and keep in the dark demons. Michael sitting on the red couch saw bailiffs empty our largest apartment. Michael with his bow tie and pink shorts received cans and stones on his head. Create to hold off the look of the crowd the man you are. These looks at you, the Royal Opera of London scene when you sang in Die Frau ohne Schatten, Richard Strauss. These sweaty body screaming my name when I sang Grace Kelly at Parc des Princes. I gave him a share of your privacy in this crowd. I learned to trust him. From the start bit by bit in my songs while defending me. "I do not want people label me, only my music account" was my response when questioned me curious about your sexuality. Their insistence to stick you an immutable identity revolted me. Gradually, I agreed to hand over your laughter, your tears, your commitments. Our only identity is culture. The cultural bastard, like our parents said, has evolved into eclectic esthete. The painting, classical music, literature, fashion hide you.

I feed you Michael but I will protect you. Our tribe protects us. Strong women ... Our swing mother sent you to the park and entrust you to a Russian opera singer. In English, growing up is used as much for a man than for a flower. Grow, bloom with Joannie. Our fusional sisters.

Paloma miraculously, you almost never lose a night of 2010. It makes the impossible possible.

Jasmine essential colorist dreams that enters your mind for sleep my imagination on paper.

Zuleika, precious stones as she polishes for its delicate jewelry.

    Faithful men ...

Our father, present in all the key moments of life, who taught freedom.

Michael, the former hostage, you called by his first name on his return from Kuwait because he was not quite it.

Our brother who looks like you so much, Fortuné, born architect of fate whims.

Finally our companion, Andy, the modest, which gives me the constancy despite the dangers.

All are from the Archangel Gabriel at the meeting of the Virgin in the Annunciation by Fra Angelico on the walls of the convent of San Marco in Florence.

Florence, London, Paris, Los Angeles ... you remember facing the pond Kensington Square, you dreamed to turn you into a duck, migratory birds can fly and swim. Today I live in town city, from continent to continent. The planes have replaced the white Toyota Previa parents. You do more tricks in hotels to sleep at seven in one room. I tend to be alone in a suite where the whole family and friends could celebrate until dawn. But if tomorrow everything stops, everything disappears if tomorrow, I réinventerai also acrobat comfortable in the palace in the shallows. I'm 36, I like the imprint of time on your skin, traces of pain on your face. The future does not frighten you because I'm always hungry.

With this new album with your name, I leave you a huge place, I go back on your steps. I start from scratch, similar and different at once. For two years, I have written nothing. I was in my bubble, moving, on the lookout but silent. The records, touring, promo, tv here and elsewhere, I left the pop star Mika take too much space in your life. I had lost the spark. The flame was rekindled yet when the light was rare ... It was the white light of surgeries for my mother. It was the dark light of farewell ceremonies. The death of Odette First, our grandmother was called mother because at 34, she considered herself too young to have grandchildren.

Finally, the time gained. He also caught Bella watching over our family in London. My Name is Michael Holbrook was born this period of introspection and demise. My texts are your memories, your feelings. My melodies, it's your old Polaroid that inhabit the attic. Life will change as a landscape projected in transparency behind the windows of a stationary car in a film in Technicolor ... Blonde hair Grace Kelly in Monte wind ... the volume of the radio up.

So I took the Southern United States road. Dad grew up there without borders, son of a diplomat. Mom woke them at the end of an American dream shattered one day stock market crash. In the alleys of the cemetery Bonaventure, Savannah, I found all these Michael Holbrook Penniman etched in stone. Michael, first registered in the civil status, by paternal tradition ... Mika, first some hours after your birth by maternal love. We mix we like the colors of ice balls in the intense heat of the sun. So, the enfant terrible asks the Freeman: "Please, remains strange. "■

    MICHAEL HOLBROOK PENNIMAN JR./MIKA

Oh wow, even with google’s kinda wonky translations it’s obvious this is a beautiful, special article ❤️ 😢 His writing is so personal & I feel honored when he shares stuff like this with us.

I'm straight-up addicted to this song. Like, I need to hear it every few hours or else I start experiencing withdrawal symptoms. :wub2: Haven't felt quite this obsessed with one particular Mika song since How Much Do You Love Me.

Everything about it is just perfect to my ears, from the lyrics to the vaguely 80s instrumentation. :fangurl:

Fun fact: If the Wikipedia entry for the new album is accurate, this is the only song on the new album that Mika alone has a writing credit on, without any co-writers.

Yesssssss! This song is 100% pure crack. It should be illegal. I need it, lots of it, repeated doses, loudly. I get irascible without it, but as soon as it starts I'm soothed. I would inject this sh*t straight into my veins if that was a thing.

LA!! This was the last stop on the tour for me, and I treasured it! Check out my Mika-inspired outfit:

    IMG_20190921_184828_1.jpg

I thought seeing Mika in a seated venue would be weird, and... it was weird. I did like that without having to queue, we had a fun day in LA without having to worry about what time to arrive to the venue. But I missed seeing everyone and hanging out before the show! We caught up a bit when I got to the venue -- it was great to see @Sivan after so long, and see some of the other fans we've been hanging out with this whole trip!

Getting the seats we wanted was also a process. Like others, I had multiple sets of tickets to try to get a better seat. Luckily Kira had a friend who wanted to come, so we gave our second pair to him and his +1. Then there was more reshuffling before the show as @NaoMika had an extra pair of tickets that were even closer that were going unused that she offered to Kira and I. Thank you for being so kind!

Finally, everyone had seats, but Mika's music is not sitting music!! Some folks were coming up to get closer to the stage, then the ushers would ask them to return to their seats, then they would come back... This was pretty distracting to me as I was sitting in the aisle. But I hope everyone was able to enjoy the show, from wherever they were at!

Anyway, we snagged a front row spot for Kiesza, since the ladies sitting there hadn't arrived yet. She had a new outfit tonight, check out this awesome jumpsuit!!

    IMG_20190921_201159.jpg

She was pointing at the people singing along and she and Chris both seemed happy to recognize some familiar faces, as well as make some new fans! I'm gonna miss her too!

When the actual show started, I could tell Mika was still feeling his cold. He missed a couple of notes (just a couple through the whole show, amazingly!), which made me appreciate how technically flawless his performances usually are. And seriously, performing a beautiful, energetic gig like his while sick?? Wow!! It really shows how talented he is. He mentioned the cold before Blue, telling us that this song is really difficult to sing, and he has a cold, so we were going to be kind while he sung it. Which we were! And it was gorgeous.

From the beginning, but especially after that, I gave up on hearing Happy Ending a capella. Even though he was still sounding great, I didn't think he would want to fill the venue with his voice tonight. I couldn't believe it when he quieted the band and the audience!! It was absolutely stunning. So authentic and beautiful, even when he's sick. I think that made a big impression on the crowd. Here's a video of it someone posted on twitter: https://twitter.com/traciglee/status/1175642184000790531?s=20

Another memorable moment was when he came down for Big Girl, he walked up and down the aisles while singing. He even got up on a chair for part of it... right in front of Kira and me!! It would have been really awkward to take a pic lol but I won't forget that!! I'm not sure if he sang right in front of us on purpose but I'm gonna say it was :) One of my favorite touches from this tour is when asking the audience to sing Big Girl, he encourages it with the line "she can't hear you!!" I found that really charming.

    IMG_20190921_213230.jpg

Tonight he wore a couple of accessories from people in the crowd, Naomi's hat and this headband with his name on it. Ha!

    IMG_20190921_221916.jpg

And I got a video of the jump in Relax this time!!

After the show, we wanted to go home because we had to get to the airport at 5 AM this morning, but the friend we were staying with wasn't home yet, so we decided to just chill with everyone waiting for Mika behind the venue while we waited for him to be ready. It took a while, so we ended up getting to see Mika, even though it also took him a while. The security at the venue told us that he wasn't coming out, like, 10 minutes before he came out, so I'm not sure what that was about. Anyway, he was in a bad way. He could barely talk so he wasn't saying much, just quietly whispering. I still appreciated the chance to thank him for the show, and even though he didn't say anything out loud, he smiled when he saw my outfit. It was so nice of him to spend a little time with everyone who waited, even though he was tired.

It's hard to believe that my time living in Mika land has come to an end for now. I enjoyed every show on this tour so much. It was so fun spending time with all the other great fans brought together by Mika! And he made every stop magical.

Thank you for your report with all these details ❤️ Helps take away the sting of not being there a little bit!

    Your outfit looks awesome 👌

So, maybe there's one near the end of the line too, somewhere....

  14. Ooh I made an extra effort to get some good group pics of the band, especially the new guys Wouter Van Tornhout and Mitchell Yoshida, for this thread!

Sadly that yellow ray of light is messing up the view of Wouter in all 20 of my band pics from the 1st Montreal gig!
