We definately have those plants here in BC. They are called "Equisetum arvense" in latin :) They made us learn that one in my forest ecology class in first year :) They used to be the size of trees back in the days of the dinosaurs.

I hope she is ok too...maybe it's just a long time to Scotland from Canada!

What kind of plant are they - what will they taste like?

They are a small plant, grow in the wet soils, but I don't think they would taste very good!!!!

The First Nations native indians used it to scrub dishes with. It's quite coarse grained, and I don't think you really want to eat it LOL

As the plant dries, silica crystals that form in the stems and branches give the plant a scratching effect, thus accounting for its historic use in polishing metal, particularly pewter.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center;

"Today, horsetail continues to have medicinal value. The plant's stems are rich in silica and silicic acids, which help mend broken bones and form collagen, an important protein found in connective tissue, skin, bone, cartilage, and ligaments. Therefore, horsetail is used as a supplement to treat and prevent osteoporosis."

Apparently, they eat them fried in batter(tempura) here - I've never tried though.

Wow!!! That would be tough to eat! LOL :) Its grainy like sand is inside the flesh of the plant, would feel VERY weird on the teeth!

Is it definitely the same plant? It looks lovely in batter!!!

Yep it is. When it gets close to the end of it's life, it loses the pretty green feathery bits and turns brown and grows that knobby bit at the top which is where it releases it's seeds from so that more horsetails can grow :)

Well, it seems only Japan that people eat horsetail...

from wiki:

The plant contains several chemicals which can be used medicinally.

It is rich in the minerals silicon (10%), potassium, and calcium, which gives it diuretic properties. It is prescribed to care for conjunctive tissues (cartilage, tendons, and bones) and also polyps, epistasis, and bleeding.

The buds are eaten as a vegetable in Japan in spring time.

It was also once used to polish pewter and wood (gaining the name pewterwort) and to strengthen fingernails.

In herbalism it is used to treat kidney and bladder problems, gastro-enteritis, and prostate and urinary infections. Externally it is used for chilblains and wounds.[1]

And someone found out that this plant is good for pollen allergy these days.
