" THEN SOMEONE MOTIONED MIKA'S CAMERA MAN TO COME CLOSER & THE LIGHTS GOT BRIGHTER, & NO FOOLIN', MIKA PROMPTED ME TO REPEAT WHAT I HAD STARTED TO SAY--ACTUALLY I THINK IT WAS MIKA HIMSELF WHO MOTIONED THE CAMERA MAN TO COME CLOSER! SO THIS IS WHAT I REMEMBER SAYING: "I'M 66 YEARS OLD: I'M THE LEADER OF YOUR GRANNY BRIGADE." "I HOPE I'M NOT TRASHING YOUR IMAGE." (There was some laughing.) THEN MIKA SAID TO ME SOMETHING PRETTY CLOSE TO: "OH NO, YOU'LL HAVE TO COME TO ONE OF THE SHOWS & COME UP ON STAGE." COMPLETELY FLOORED, I STAMMERED, SOMETHING PRETTY CLOSE TO: "WELL, I DON'T KNOW; WE'LL JUST HAVE TO SEE ABOUT . . . T H A T!" I really don't know if MIKA then moved on to the next person or if I, completely startled, just turned on my heels & left. I JUST CAN'T REMEMBER!. ANYWAY, I'LL NEVER FORGET IT. THERE IS A GREAT SENSE OF SATISFACTION TO HAVE EXCHANGED A FEW WORDS WITH MIKA, TO HAVE SEEN HIM, "UP CLOSE & PERSONAL," WITH HIS FANS & TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TAKE HIS HAND TO THANK HIM FOR COMING TO THE UNITED STATES. HAVE NO IDEA IF, WHERE OR WHEN, THE CAMERA FOOTAGE MAY SHOW UP! AFTER A LITTLE DIFFICULTY GETTING A CAB, "BIG DADDY DALE" & I GOT TO THE ONLY PLACE I KNOW OF IN PHILLY THAT WILL FEED YOU IF YOUR ARSE HITS THE CHAIR BY 12:59 AFTER MIDNIGHT. OH, WHAT A NIGHT! ABOUT THE TIME I'M REALIZING THIS, I'M TRYING TO WIGGLE A LITTLE CLOSER TO THE FRONT. A COUPLE WHO HAD BEEN RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME IN THE LINE TO ENTER THE VENUE EARLIER HAD ENDED THEIR VISIT & THAT FREED UP AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET A BIT CLOSER TO THE FRONT MIKA HAD ALREADY COVERED. THE GUY AS HE PASSED ME TO LEAVE, SAID SOMETHING LIKE "GET IN THERE!" I THINK THERE WAS ONE PERSON TO MY LEFT, KIND OF BETWEEN MIKA & WHERE I WAS STANDING. I THINK AS MIKA FINISHED WITH SOMEONE I (MAYBE) CAUGHT MIKA'S EYE & REACHED OVER THIS PERSONS SHOULDER TO TAKE MIKA'S HAND BEFORE HE MOVED FURTHER AWAY. I'M PRETTY SURE I FIRST SAID, "MIKA, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING TO THE UNITED STATES." THEN I STARTED SAYING SOMETHING THAT I HAD NOT PLANNED TO SAY, IT JUST CAME SPILLING OUT . . . PAGE _____ 15. Clay Posted February 17, 2008 Share Posted February 17, 2008 (edited) so when the concert from "the best ringmaster--ever" was over, with our info from "the nicest bouncer you'd ever want to meet" we headed for the stage door area which was kind of in an ally area. It was about 11:00 pm. When i made my decision to not come to the venue 'til 7:00 pm i had decided i would rather put in "wait time" to possibly see or meet mika after the performance--knowing it's not a "for sure thing" at all. I wish i had counted how many people were waiting back there-- i certainly had the time, but it didn't occur to me to do that at the time. Not good at such estimates, but i'm thinking some- where in the 40-60 range. Anyway, fans good natured & chatting with each other. A very large truck was there backed in toward the side of the building where the stage door exit was. At first, a white suv was parked parallel to the stage door exit. Fans sporadically were singing several mika songs--kinda softly; not loud. At least two times someone (security?) exited the door & said something like this: "ok, this is how it's gunna be." "when he comes out, he's not gunna sign anything." there will be no pictures taken of fans with mika." "he'll chat & say goodnight." (ok, so put the thing you brought for mika to sign away & forget that!) so, good, he's going to visit with us a bit--great. (especially if you read about the second performance in canada!) so, then the announcement 2nd?/3rd? Time gets a little less encouraging, sounds like mika's just going to do a kind of one-time group wave goodnight & leave. Somewhere in there they tell everyone to backup (i swear i think i heard one of them say "unless you want to become road kill!") so the white car backs up a bit & turns so it's now also backed into the area where the stage door exit is. And some one had put some "barriers" down: They were just yellow painted 2x4s down on the ground. Around 11:20-11:30 gear starts getting loaded into the big truck. Mind you, the show didn't end 'til about 11:00. A sight, i don't know why, that i'll never forget: Someone carried that can that mika beats on while shirtless out kind of high above his head & the colorful daisies were still attached. It was just an image thing for me! Varous people exited the door: Each time everyone expectantly searched the area with their eyes for that one person they're waiting to see. So anyway, i don't know if it was the 3rd or 4th time some one came out to make an announcement about how "it was gunna be," but as soon as he started to speak, the crowd in unison said "we know!" i thought to myself maybe he wasn't going to say the same thing this time, maybe this time he was going to say something different! (i'm not certain, but i think it was a different guy each time.) anyway, the "we know! Just shut him up, he didn't say anything else. At midnight mika appears: He looks fab, of course. He's bundled up well. Wearing kind of neutral colors. I think a brown jacket & gray & cream tweedy-looking knit neck scarf like this: & hat. The knit hat was pulled down to his eyebrows! I think "good boy, taking care to bundle up & wear that warm hat." he starts to work his way down the front of the line. People are well behaved, but you can sense this underlying almost desperation like "so near, but what if i don't get my chance" kind of thing. Mika, as always, seems relaxed, seems to enjoy the interaction & gives each person he speaks with very focussed attention & puts them at ease. All the time the car is right there, steps away, door open, motor running (not positive about this,) but i do know, at one point at least, there was music playing in the car. So i'm about three people back from the ones mika is speaking with. A girl in front of me reaches toward him to give him a t-shirt she decorated for mika. It's white & if i remember correctly, it has the word "relax" on it. I think she was successful. I'm thinking all the while i haveto say something. So i rudely shout out "mika, don't give up on the united states." i don't know how he could not have heard, i'm pretty sure he did. But, i believe, because--if even just for a brief moment-- he was with great purpose giving attention to the person he was speaking to, there was no recognition. Basically, mika was considerate: I was not! So he's working his way down the line, i am enjoying watching him with everyone, it appears that several girls have asked if they may give or receive a hug & that's happening. As his visit with each fan ends, they tend to leave, so those behind them then move to the front. It's like a bit after mid-night. There is a girl about four people to my left & about four people back from the important front of the line that is going into near desperation mode. She's also shouting out a bit & trying to pass an ugly doll forward to mika. I think she was successful. Some have asked mika about his relative's narrative--used in the show: The one about her loosing her eyesight as well as her intended husband. Mika is going through a pretty thorough explanation about that & also characterizing his song about it. So here's the thing, as your mind is racing, you realize . . . page _____ 14. Clay Posted February 17, 2008 Share Posted February 17, 2008 (edited) a couple of observations: Two things i haven't seen in all my youtube viewings: -the inclusion of mika's relative's narrative about a bomb taking her eyesight from "licm." -a costumed plush bunny (i think) down in the audience. It was, for a bit, hanging around the sound equipment. It wasn't causing a raucus or anything. I don't know if it was part of the show or the audience-- just puzzling. Some comments: -personally, i welcomed the change (from i think the first show in canada) back to including "missionary man." -i really couldn't figure out that well what mika was saying when he spoke. (i've had that experience at the theater near me where the bso plays--where the acoustics can be fine for music, but not for the spoken word. (i want mika to play at "the music center at strathmore" theater when he writes his opera!) anyway, with "youtube" + all of your posts, one can get filled in on that later. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjah23tkqtk&feature=related although mika's interaction with the audience is always among my favorite parts. -concerning the venue. I know "the electric factory" is considered small, compared to other venues, but it seemed like a lot of people to me. And, anyway, the more 'intimate' the better for my taste. -also, even though the stage is also smaller than others, all the important details were included. "gray skelly!" -i liked the element of the blow-up figures, inflating/deflating right in front of your eyes. I thought it added humor & animation: As if mika's concert wants for any added animation! Anyway nimble mika figured out how to include it all, dear boy. -concerning the audience. There was not much, if any, silly dress-up stuff. -from what i've been able to read, so far, mika & the concert are getting good reviews! I have, from the start, believed mika's future is "blindingly bright." it may take a bit longer in the states, but, as the saying goes--which i firmly believe--"cream rises to the top." page _____ 13. I loved it all. Every time he did "a little freddie," i did "a little freddie!" since i think i've seen nearly every youtube performance mika's done, i kind of knew the drill: I'd jab "big daddy dale" & tell him what was coming up next-- like "ok, now he's gonna take his shirt off." "now he's gonna jump up near the drums." "now, he's gonna shake his tushie & they'll all go wild." or i'd tell him the names of the pieces-- like, "ok, this one's grace kelly" "oh, this one's lollipop." during "lollipop," he said "that's why they all want to sit down there, up front." SO WHILE IT WAS STILL PRETTY EMPTY UP THERE I THREW MY COAT OVER THE VERY CENTER TWO STOOLS, TALKED TO THE "NICEST BOUNCER YOU'D EVER WANT TO MEET" TO REQUEST HE "WATCH 'MY' SEATS" & WATCH OUT FOR "BIG DADDY DALE" & HEADED FOR THE UNMARKED RESTROOMS TO FIGURE I WAS IN THE WRONG ONE WHEN I RAN INTO TWO GUYS THERE. "BIG DADDY DALE" MY SON IN LAW HELD OUR PLACE IN LINE WHILE I WENT TO SAY "HI" TO LUCY. AND, BY GOD, IF SHE WASN'T ABOUT 5TH IN LINE. CHATTED WITH HER FOR A WHILE, GAVE HER A LITTLE TRINKET & WENT BACK TO OUR SPOT IN LINE. GOT A CHANCE TO ASSESS THE LINE, & FIGUREED MOST WERE GOING FOR THE 1ST FLOOR SPOTS & WE'D BE OK GOING RIGHT ON UP TO THE 2ND FLOOR WHEN WE GOT IN. BY THE TIME I JOINED "BIG DADDY DALE" THERE WERE A LOT MORE FANS IN LINE, BUT THEY WERE BEHIND US . . . I HAD READ HERE THAT (AT OTHER CONCERTS) SOME HAD TO CHECK THEIR BAGS, SO DECIDED NOT TO TAKE ONE. HAD WHAT I THOUGHT I NEEDED IN MY JEAN POCKETS & TRUSTED 2 PLASTIC "FOUR SEASONS" LAUNDRY BAGS TO "BIG DADDY DALE" TO KEEP IN HIS POCKETS IN CASE WE NEEDED THEM FOR OUR COATS.
