For THE: the sky,the sun,the stars - because there's only ONE sun,only ONE sky. -Londom is on THE Thames. (because Thames is only ONE) Also,THE is used for the names of the rivers,mountains etc. You use THE in the comparation of adjectives too...the highest,the smallest,the prettiest... For A : She wants to be A singer. (there are many singers in the world) You use AN when the noun is starting with a vocal (a,e,i,o,u) AN elephant AN exercise AN abbey AN entertainment and so on.
