Folk / Traditional music from your country

Keti, just out of interest, have you ever heard this song?

Magdi Ruzsa singing Ederlezi. It is a Serbian-Gipsy type of song that she performed on Hungarian pop idol.

First part of the song is sung in Hungarian and the Serbian folk music part comes in after 1:00

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-H47c3xnZo&feature=related

I recommend this to everyone, actually, because of the Balkan brass band in an very easily digestable format.

I have just listened to it, and it's really good! Goran Bregovic is a world-wide known composer and singer :thumb_yello: people here really loove his music, and I certainly do respect it, but it's just not my cup of tea. :teehee:

And Ruzsa sings great!

Can I also say, even though it's totally off-topic, that I love Magyar language? I'm a huge fan of the Hallmark channel and because the advertisments are all in Hungarian, I always listen to it :roftl:

Magdi Ruzsa is Hungarian but is from Vojvodina, Serbia - that's why her Serbian is pretty good..:wink2: I actually thought she was more well-known in your country as you gave her the most points in Eurovision 2007 but those points must have all come from the Hungarian minority then:naughty:

Anyway, here is the 'original' EDERLEZI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwA_Zg_z-FI

:thumb_yello::thumb_yello:

(PS: I think The Time of the Gypsies by Emir Kusturica should be screened on a compulsory basis in some Western countries - it was so revealing even for me when I first saw it... A completely different world they live in..)

Thanks for the info:thumb_yello:

She was representing Hungary in 2007? I have totally forgotten about it :naughty: But I shall find her 2007 entry on YT as soon as possible to refresh my memory then.:wink2:

That movie is pretty good. Davor Dujmovic is playing in it as well, and I love him, especially in the role in series "Slozna Braca" :roftl:

Have you guys seen this movie?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Are_Not_Angels

It's called "We Are Not Angels", or in Serbian - "Mi nismo anđeli".

It's one of my favourite Serbian movies, it is sooo crazy and funny!:roftl:

 I haven't heard of that one but Vruć vetar (tv series former Yugoslavia) was HUGE in Hungary in the 80s... :thumb_yello:

Funny, the best video I found for the song (from the film) was actually posted by someone in Hungary. Here it is (A sad adio) ...kind of folk music, too :

An interesting thread! Must say though that I'm not a huge fan of the folk music from my country, Serbia, regardless that I'll post some videos to see what you guys think. :naughty:

There's this very very popular TV show in Serbia called "Zvezde Granda" - or "Starts Of Grand". It's something very much like "Idol" or something similar, except it's based on the folk and traditional Serbian music followed by Serbian traditional instruments.

Here you can find something more about it.

Zvezde Granda - "Stars of Grand" - the official website. Except it's in Serbian. :naughty:

It's mostly turbo-folk actually, it's traditional folk music with dance, hip-hop and pop elements.

Some of the greatest Serbian TURBO-folk music stars:

Slavica Ćukteraš

"Mrgud", Grand Parade 2008

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8Zc0CwMaiA&feature=related

slavica_cukteras.jpg

Seka Aleksić

Seka Aleksic-"Aspirin" - Grand parada

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFOxmqNIsFc&feature=related

seka-aleksic-v2.jpg

Probably the biggest star ever here

Ceca Ražnatović - Lepi Grome Moj

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMcr2SCpac8

Ceca Ražnatović - Manta Manta

230px-Ceca_03.jpg

Your modern folk music sound similar to that of the Middle East.. I can hear the same influences, looking back at history there's no wonder why..:thumb_yello:

Actually, they must hear the REAL traditional Serbian music-the so-called "inn" music.Find something from Toma Zdravković,Snežana Đurišić,Merima Njegomir,Nada Topčagić etc.But especially Toma Zdravković,he's the king of traditional music :wub2:

Links??:wink2:

These remind me of... 'Dangdut'... it's not actually traditional.. but it's modern folk of Indonesia mainly and Malaysia...and Dangdut is mostly seductive and the result of the boom in this type of music is sleazy clubs where men actually pay to dance with girls... I don't enjoy this type of music personally, but there are exceptions of course.. some songs are catchy.. just can't help but like.. These are not traditional though..

Here are some links for Malaysian Dangdut

Mas Idayu - she's quite big in the Dangdut scene in Malaysia

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faB9e6mG_V8

Amelina - this is old.. but I thought she put a bit of class in Dangdut back then ... don't mind her..

Exactly, I said that in the follow-up of my post. I don't like any of it, perhaps some of Ceca Ražnatović and Nataša Bekvalac and Lepa Brena...

Merima Njegomir-Ivanova korita

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZe_OxQJBQs

Toma Zdravkovic '90 -Tuzno ljeto

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BK6qgE4Zz9Y

These sound more folk than traditional, interesting.

I reckon the catalyst for this thread (Alexander Rybak) should start it off:

some clips from Norway

Alexander Rybak mixing up folk music from Norwegian and Slavic tradition + traditional Norwegian dance; Halling.

Fanitullen, one of the oldest traditional folk melodies in Norway

:wub2: I like your links... the dances are great.. similar to Irish cum Russian from what I know anyway..in regards to the urovision winner this year... i liked his song until he started to sing the lyrics...

As promised:

Traditional Hungarian:

Sebestyén Márta & Muzsikás: Bújdosódal. Fordulj Lovam

Hungarian melody arranged by Deep Forest (same performer, traditional song):

s

I like these.... and the videos too :thumb_yello: The first one actually tells the history through pics.. i wish i understand the lyrics.

Edit: Will come back for the rest later and post some decent stuff.

Typical isn't it .. not many are interested in traditional music.. :sneaky2:

Anyway here are some from Malaysia..

these are traditional influenced music by Noraniza Idris.. she's like the leading lady in traditionally influenced music in malaysia.. it's about putting up a show with her.. i actually enjoy her performances..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yx3QWZ4hpUQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBRfbeFhPC8

Joget is a type of dance and music, it's traditional, but the tempo can be adapted and many new joget songs emerge throughout the years..and become folk songs

This one is by - Adibah Noor

This one is about Malaysia... by the late P Ramlee & his wife the late Saloma..both are legends, but he is the most celebrated talent in Malaysia-Singapore.

Zapin is one of the dances I enjoy watching best... especially when guys do it...

this one is an old song sung by - Siti Nurhaliza

More Zapin with Siti but with kids doing the Zapin

All these are the Malay traditions.. in Malaysia there are many many races.. so there are a variety of cultures and traditions..

We have Chinese Malaysians who inherit culture from their ancestors from Chinese regions... Chinese influenced songs though not as popular do exist.. and mainly are played during Chinese New Year..

This is a Chinese New Year song originally from Malaysia ..it's in Hokkien.. there are many chinese dialect spoken in Malaysia

Another Chinese New Year song.. in Mandarin this time... girls are wearing Kebaya.. a traditional outfit of the Straits Chinese...

Right will stop here for today.. I'm gonna cover more stuff next.. I'm getting quite excited about this.. I'm a sucker for traditions and cultures..

Directly from Portugal:

Deolinda - a new band that shows a kind of "modern" approach of the traditional sounds (like fado, for example)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=

Xaile - mainly traditional folk songs, played by 3 girls, who not only sing and play instruments, but also dance (also a more "modern" approach of the traditional sounds)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46_DsPEJEvg

Galandun Galundaina - Folk (with celtic influences) from a region in the north of Portugal, called Miranda do Douro

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OK-Es0RXBnk

Dazkarieh - Again, more modern, but still traditional sounds

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdI7OiKufp8

And of course...FADO, probably the most well-known music of Portugal:

Mariza - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Iapqgekl3I

Amália Rodrigues - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h10E-isDTF0

Carlos do Carmo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDSvNe5VNmk

And a different kind of fado (my personal fave) that is played mainly in the universities, by groups of students. It's sung many times by boys who want to show their love to the girls (usually they go to the girl's house and play by her window :wub2:). Some of the songs are also about a student's life, leaving college and the friends, etc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3WGttZdksg

(I always cry like a baby listening to this)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjF_qYUrmRQ

And last but not least, speaking of students, there are traditional groups of university students, called "Tunas" (nothing to do with the fish), and they sound like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MtthcnLh9U

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrBRrAunEIs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDPMbOkFAUk

and a female one:

Thanks you for posting these... They actually strengthen my perception of Malaysian music I have heard so far: very colourful, happy and combines several types of performing arts :thumb_yello:

This is actually my favourite. I like how this old man creates some wonderful melodies from a self-made simple string instrument. Is that a kind of potatoe at the bottom? :shocked:Awesome :thumb_yello:These traditions should not be forgotten about..

PS: I have to go now but next I'll check Mary's stuff - hopefully some fado in store for my Sunday afternoon:wink2:

Also traditional Hungarian song Tavaszi Szél – seems best performance of this song on YT is from Freddie Mercury :blush-anim-cl:(it really is:biggrin2:), so here it is:

I was gonna post that, and then I remembered I'm not from Hungary :teehee:

Love that song :wub2:

Are you absolutely sure about that? You've been acting strange lately..:naughty:

Love that song :wub2:

It's funny how that song was a well-known one and part of our folk music heritage but not a particularly popular one... After 1986, however, it has been in public attention again and most people would mention this as a typical Hungarian folk song to anyone from abroad... I mean, Freddie has basically put this song back into the presentable part of our cultural heritage :blush-anim-cl:... and Brian also plays it at concerts when he visits.

Thank you for all the different types of Portuguese music and fado..

We also have bagpipes in our traditional music :wink2:

The way Art of Amelia is set in that piece on YT reminded me of the scene I first 'met' fado singers... It was in a small restaurant in Lisboa and people previously dining there started to sing fado as the night progressed, taking turns... It was a memorable experience :wub2:

As for the Tunas, my favourite is this:

...but I am usually biased towards string instruments and orchestras..:teehee:

..and I also liked the flag dance:thumb_yello:

You're welcome, glad you liked them! :wub2:

Yes, there are many places like that you described in Lisbon. They're called "Casas de Fado" (Fado Houses), usually little restaurants that have resident fado singers and/or people (some "real" singers, others who just like to sing sometimes) who go there occasionally to sing. :wink2:

Why does he show up everywhere?:sneaky2: Just kidding!

He is representative *shrugs*

But we need more music here just to show off!!:naughty:

But we from No-way should add VAMP+KORK here too.

That's folk music! pop/rock adding Kringkastingsorkestret (KORK) and you just got a really cool mix!

But Gåte (Gaate) is definitely Norwegian folk rock! Love em <3

Oh! And by the way, Savage Beauty: Did you get that from what he said at the concert he had in Oslo this year? So cute <#

Cant you kinda hear it on your countrys national anthem? The danish anthem doesnt fit the songs above much though

(ive never understod what they sing at some points in the danish one.. full version :lmfao: )

Im trying to find the "short" version that they are useing at football games.. but all i get most is bad quality denmark - sweden game :lmfao:

(Short version... bad quality though. And for the info: Denmark is the red & white in the vid... not the blue & yellow :naughty: ) Edited by Dark Angel
