Folk / Traditional music from your country

Savage Beauty

Recommended Posts

In the "Eurovision 2009" thread we've had alot of discussions on folk / traditional music lately, based on the fact that alot of us love to hear other countries' folk- music rather than just their pop/ rock, which sounds pretty much the same all over the world.

So we thought we'd start a thread on folk- music, and give everyone a chance to show off their cultural heritage and teach each other about their country's musical history.

Alot of people know some Irish music, Spanish music etc, but not enough and there's SO much music that deserves to be heard and known..

So show us YOUR folk- music!

Whether it's in its original wrapping or mixed with modern day rhythm, it shows us a bit of your country, your origins and your culture :)

I reckon the catalyst for this thread (Alexander Rybak) should start it off:

some clips from Norway

Alexander Rybak mixing up folk music from Norwegian and Slavic tradition + traditional Norwegian dance; Halling.

Fanitullen, one of the oldest traditional folk melodies in Norway

An interesting thread! Must say though that I'm not a huge fan of the folk music from my country, Serbia, regardless that I'll post some videos to see what you guys think. :naughty:

There's this very very popular TV show in Serbia called "Zvezde Granda" - or "Starts Of Grand". It's something very much like "Idol" or something similar, except it's based on the folk and traditional Serbian music followed by Serbian traditional instruments.

Here you can find something more about it.

Zvezde Granda - "Stars of Grand" - the official website. Except it's in Serbian. :naughty:

It's mostly turbo-folk actually, it's traditional folk music with dance, hip-hop and pop elements.

Some of the greatest Serbian TURBO-folk music stars:

Slavica Ćukteraš

"Mrgud", Grand Parade 2008

Seka Aleksić

Seka Aleksic-"Aspirin" - Grand parada

Probably the biggest star ever here

Ceca Ražnatović - Lepi Grome Moj

Exactly, I said that in the follow-up of my post. I don't like any of it, perhaps some of Ceca Ražnatović and Nataša Bekvalac and Lepa Brena...

As promised:

Traditional Hungarian:

Sebestyén Márta & Muzsikás: Bújdosódal. Fordulj Lovam

Hungarian melody arranged by Deep Forest (same performer, traditional song):

Hungarian folk song with violin and jitter - concert performance (my recommendation :wink2:

Magdi Ruzsa and Felix Lajkó: Még azt mondják

Also traditional Hungarian song Tavaszi Szél – seems best performance of this song on YT is from Freddie Mercury :blush-anim-cl:(it really is:biggrin2:), so here it is:

HUNGARIAN TUNES IN CLASSICAL MUSIC

Brahms: Hungarian Dances No5 (csardas)

Brahms: Hungarian Dances No5 (csardas) PLAYED BY GIPSY ORCHESTRA (100Gypsy Violins) :thumb_yello:

Traditional csardas played by gypsy musicians

Hungarian folk music mixed with classical music – only for the adventurous :

Bartók’s Allegro Barbaro with folk music

...and now I will check the other posts

Keti, just out of interest, have you ever heard this song?

Magdi Ruzsa singing Ederlezi. It is a Serbian-Gipsy type of song that she performed on Hungarian pop idol.

First part of the song is sung in Hungarian and the Serbian folk music part comes in after 1:00

I recommend this to everyone, actually, because of the Balkan brass band in an very easily digestable format.

Yes it does:thumb_yello:

It is actually the first result I found on Fanitullen when I searched, too

Yes, same here :wink2:

I loved that dance 'halling' btw :thumb_yello:

Amazing how people can do that...

I love those traditional dances, I always loved this vid because of it:

This vid is based on Russian dances I suppose? I have no clue what the name of the dance is though. Maybe I should go and find that out :naughty:

Lovely thread!!!!:thumb_yello:

I chose music that comes from Apulia, that's a region in the deepest south of Italy: this music's called "taranta", and the dancers move and jump as they were bit by a "tarantola", that's a a very common spider in those places.

Women move in a very hypnotic way!

I love that song Kalinka, seriously! I think a lot of people find that weird but still:teehee: I really loved the first vid (how cute was that bear :aah:)

I loved the performance on eurovision as well :

It says it's a mix of Russian folk songs, so it fits in here :thumb_yello:

I liked your links. The music seems to be diverse in that region... also, the different dances..

I used to do some folk dancing, too, when I was little, including an Austrian dance, which reminded me that I should probably post Tyrolean music here as I can't remember anyone posting from Austria(+ there used to be an Austro-Hungarian Monarch once, anyway:biggrin2:)

..so, from Austria

Tiroler dans / Tyrolean dance with some cool guys:biggrin2:
