Mika : Oui.

Mika, the "splits" mans

(yes, the title sounds odd in French also, dont worry...)

You thought he was a perpetual teenager? He's in fact a very fussy artist. Here's the meeting before his show, Friday in Marseille.

The tour of the gifted pop singer. "It's like a mexican death walk with moments to laugh and to cry."

Artists can be classified, there's those that annoy you because of their polite ponctuality; those that you find charming, even if they're really late. Where do we put Mika? In the second category. In the living room of a Parisian hotel, he arrives, with rings under his eyes, his curls still asleep, mais his hands on his heart and says he sorry. "I haven't slept in 4 days. So i changed rooms with my american manager who had no idea why he was being waken up while i was still asleep." No hard feelings. The singer who sold a million albums of LICM (yes, they say 1 million ) 2 years ago begins his new tour with singles from his second album, TBWKTM et has the costum of a-man-who-can't-sleep-because-he's-in-a-creative-process. And we believe it.

What keeps you awake? Rehearsals?

Mika: Yes, we rehearsed in the George Lucas Stage in London. It's the first time that i could really lead a show during 4 days. I wanted to present a show that would be an evolution. So, i had alot of pressure.

How did you work?

Mika: subconsciously, i think, during about 3 years, we created some kind of collective work. I worked with prodution people that work in opera and my entire family is now a specialist in making accessories and costumes. For the visual part, we created a group of students et every one of them worked on a song. Everything was home-made. It doesnt have the flashy looks of your usual big tour.

And you wanted it to be home-made?

Mika: Yes. We wanted to offer something big, but that still had that home-made look. For example, my sister went to China. She designed a dragon that was made over there in the opera workshop of Pekin. Ma mom did some flags, one of them is 12 meters long. And a stuffed Toy Boy that is 6 meters high. It's impressing visually, but it's not perfect, it's not a Las Vegas show! And because it has these home-made signs, its stronger emotionnaly.

In your music, did you also want to have the home-made side?

Mika: Yes, we did exactly the same thing. We tried to avoid just playing the album. There are new versions of my songs, an opera singer. We have to find the middle between the show, theater and the music

You are a big collector right?

Mika: Yes! I collect illustrations from the 50s to today. They're everywhere at home, and some are even stored between my underwear and my socks! () I also collect smells, i must have 175 bottles () I also collect Barbara's albums.

And Tino Rossi's albums too?

Mika: I have alot of his albums too, yes.

Tino Rossi-Barbara, thats very different no?

Mika: (laughs) Yes. But i like different things! (ok, thats where in french he says the split lol) Tino Rossi has a very pure and rigid voice and it isnpires me. I find inspiration in things that are totally out-of-fashion. I grew up with that. That's what we used to listen to in our Paris appartement. There was also Aznavour, he was the master of histories, and Gainsbourg, the master of sex! (laughs)

We talk alot about your childhood, does that bother you?

Mika: No. Except if it's to ask again: "Do you still live with your parents" I'm moving right now, or "You have the Peter Pan syndrom", like yesterday on that TV show. My first album was about childhood, and the second one about my teenage years. But my songs talk about sex, identity, death, sad moments. Even if they look happy. That's how i tell my stories, that's my way of doing it.

This mythology creeated around you, is it heavy?

Mika: When i was a teenager, i had hard times. I took too much drugs and alcohol. But i'm happy that i did certain things. Because today, i can find almosy everything funny. It's my explanation, my way of dealing. And no, i'm not playing a character. It's me! I've never been this mentally retarded child.

In the media, the question about your sexuality is always asked...

Mika: (sighs) Did you read the lyrics to my songs? I talk about it of course. But my sexuality isn't political or journalistic. It's my private life.

The show in Marseille is already sold out. Theres alot of pressure.

Mika: I think we must have fun first. And create moments that want to make people laugh then cry. It's my job, to give that to people. It's easy and hard at the same time!

Oh glad to hear it :biggrin2: who says that he has been a mentally retarded child ? What is the link with being honest and a mentally retarded child ? We can find more honestly inside a word or an attitude to looking at a child than to an attitude of an adult who can be totally hypocrite... I guess he misunderstood the way he must justify himself toward a gift that has been given to him :boxed:...

I like it very much. Thanks for posting:wub2:

But did he really used to take "too much drugs and alcohol"? :boxed:

yeah, every time he mentions something like that it makes me :boxed::boxed::boxed: all that stuff that alters your mind are just freaking me out:aah: but, he looks perfectly fine to me now:blush-anim-cl: so it couldn't be "too much" after all. Luckily. :original:

Thank you very much for translation LilStar! :flowers2:
