In English: This theater the amphithéatre de Lyon is a top quality place so the sound is perfect. Normally in an arena the sound is a disaster. But in a perfect theater as here I can remove my earpieces because I can hear perfectly even without my earpieces. So I asked Mika if this is what allowed him to do such a special show last night in Lyon. Mika: This public tonight was great but it was also extremely demanding . It was really a concert and people were watching all the details closely. And what was really interesting is that at the end of a song boom it exploded and when I started the next song the public was so focused intensely which means I really had to improvise and be totally in the moment. I had to change the setlist entirely . I kind of threw everything up in the air and I decided to make a very musical ahow and it went well and it worked.. That was so great! What a huge gift Mika gave last night to Lyon audience! So I asked Mika what he thinks about Lyon. I did lots of concerts here in Lyon. I did lots of festivals. It's such an elegant city in its architecture, in its feeling, in its light, it is a very noble town. Actually I was here only two weeks ago. I was in a shooting in a private TGV . We stopped in Lyon and it was a secret. No one knew about it. The police was a bit everywhere. It was cool! It was a new commercial for the TGV. It was shot with a huge production.We'll be able to watch that new commercial soon.So I asked Mika about his projects.His album No Place in Heaven will be reissued on November 6th. I have asked him to talk about this album. Mika: I wrote this album with my piano, and not too electronic with lots of joy and lots of color but built with things which are rather human and acoustic which means it gets into the heart much easily. When things are a bit truer and more acoustic one can create an emotional link more easily. It's like a show , it's like tonight, when props and staging and the set are all handmade it gets into hearts and provokes emotions more easily. How beautiful! And on this album there will be a second CD, all of Mika's hits with a symphonic orchestra. It's a double package with my album No Place in Heaven which is my fourth album. This album is one of the best things I have ever done in my life and all my career. It was an absolutely crazy experience. So I asked him what we would find in this album. Mika: there will be songs from all fourth albums. There will be Grace Kelly, Relax, Elle Me Dit, Boum boum boum, Rain, many many things but when you hear those songs with 120 musicians , totally live, nothing has been reworked, with the original voices, I can't tell you, it's my future , I have the feeling that I know what I'm going to do ten years from now. So Mika here on radio Scoop is telling us that his career will certainly become more symphonic or maybe even lyrical in the coming years and whatsmore there will be a DVD coming out soon. Mika: There will be a DVD we will ahoot in Como, very close to George Clooney's house. Because it costs a lot of money to have a symphonic orchestra. There are 120 musicians on stage. That's not something you do for money actually it's the opposite ; you have to pay to do it almost because it is a huge honor when she told me to call them and I asked: "Do you know someone there? " and she said:"No, but I'll use the yellow pages." And she called them just like that. They asked to meet me the following week , they said yes to me and now it is an album which will be released worldwide, from Japan, Korea, France, to the United States... So I asked Mika if there was a recipe to make a symphonic music. Mika: When you take classical music and you try to make it pop, it's too, it's too heavy. There is a way to do that makes it fly because pop music and rock music must fly like a gun shot. It must go boom, it must go! I got a chance to hear Boum Boum in its synphonic version and Mika's interpretation reminded me of the greatest such as Jacques Brel so I told him. Mika: Boum Boum really started a debate so when you tell me it reminds you a bit about Jacques Brel in its symphonic version, it means that finally I found the right production. No Place in Heaven will be reissued including the symphonic CD on November 6th. Now for the very first time a little part of Underwater symphonic version. Mika: Someone once called me to ask me if I wanted to sing a duet with a young girl. I said: "Why?" and they said: "You'll see , you're going to meet her and you will love her. She's in a TV show for Nickolodeon." (two years prior to the duet) So we met on Skype and we recorded the song on Skype. I called the record company and I told them: You found a new star. She will be a big one. Now there are 2 million views on youtube. And she was of course Adriana Grande. 'The singer has become the ambassador of of Imagine for Margo, an association fighting in order to develop research to cure children who suffer from cancer.“They are so gifted, or rough, those little warriors”France Dimanche25 Sep 2015Margaux was 13 years old when she started suffering from headaches and vomiting . Her life and her family's abruptly changed when an aggressive brain tumour was diagnosed. The courageous teenager fought during 16 months. Margaux had initiated a fundraising in favor of research, which provoked a huge response of many people showing their solidarity and an unprecedented big number of donations. Her mother, Patricia Blanc, has taken over Margaux's fight through the association Imagine for Margo-Children WithoutCancer. We met its ambassador, the singerMika.. France Dimanche : How did you hear about this association ? Mika : Thanks to the photographer Peter Lindbergh. He contacted me and asked me if I would join them during a week end in 2014 in order to surprise the « little warriors». Do you know that each year in France, 2 500 children and teenagers are diagnosed with cancer and that 500 die because of cancer, which is more than a child per day ? People are not aware that most research programs are for treatments for adults and that only 2 % of the money funds of the labs who look for new meds are dedicated to search for children cancer. Everyone knows about that illness.But unless someone close to you had to fight against it, people ignore what a dramatic change it creates in the life of those kids and of their families... Most of the times it's very hard, and even more for those who don't get enough support. The association was created at the end of the year 2011. Its president Patricia Blanc, vice-présidente Marie-Anne Aymerich and Dr Dominique Valteau-Couanet [in charge of children and teenagers cancer treatment unit at ’Institut Gustave-Roussy à Villejuif,added by France Dimanche ] have an accute sense of emergency. I am very impressed by those women' s strenght. The.association is rather discreet and only relies on unpaid volunteers . He is a joyful anarchist . He ates snobs and fads. However , he is the greatest fashion photographer! Last year I met Juliette and Noé. Both were 10 years old and they were my fav. They both died. They are the ones who made me want to get involved publicly. After Juliette's death, Adèle, her 7 years old litle sister , sent me a very joyful letter with photos. She wanted me to see Juliette with hair. .France Dimanche. : It's not easy to support such a cause.… Mika : We all have to face hardship. I think all is written and that one has to do something in favor of those exceptional persons . Those children and the most honest and the most straightforward. The only thing that might shock about them is how mature they are. It's moving inspiring if needed, but also so sad to see that they are so adult. They helped me, thanks to their incredible wisdom sagesse, how to step back in life .France Dimanche. : You are 32 years old , but you seem to be like a child when you're with them. Mika. : Peter and the association get involved fpr those kids joyfully. And Disney's joy ! This enthousiasm, they are the ones who gave it to me. They are so gifted, or hard, those enfants terribles and warriors . In Camargue, they were totally amazing. We played with a kite on the beach, we built sand castles, we did a shooting . At the restaurant, during the flamenco evening, once they had had enough of flamenco they forced me to sing! Then Noé got up on the stage to replace me. Even if pretty Juliette was tired , I found them very funny. They didn't have any filter when they talked. Then one day, Noé's mother came to see me on The Voice set to tell me about the bad news. Then I got Juliette's mother's letter and she was thanking me because that week end was her daughter's best memory. But Juliette had died too. All the sudden, it was real.. When you witness their will of living, their urge to express themselves and their parents' energy, you forget the outcome . France Dimanche. : « Go, fight , win ! » What do you think about the message Margaux left us ? Mika. : One could believe it's a commercial to sell sneakers, but it's heartbreaking whem you know who created that slogan. It is very inspiring for me, when I am in a difficult situation, when I feel excluded, those words come to my mind. It's a very good motivation. On the way back home in the train, Clément wrote to me : « At least, we feel less alone. » I know why those words are so important. This cause isn't known enough , we have to share their messages and get more donations in favor of children cancer. France Dimanche: Will you take part in the 4th run « Enfants sans cancer » organised by the association on September 27th ? Mika: No, I will be touring and I won't be able to be at domaine national de Saint-Cloud where this great event will take place. The association has already gathered almost 700 000 euros to fund a treatment targeted to those little adults relapsing. Mika: Excited and filled with a cheer happy energy because I have some new musicians, a new staging , new arrangements which are really sublime. All this will call for lots of discipline. My schedule hasn't been that busy since a long time. L'essentiel: The public is eager to hear your hits of course, but how do they react to the new album? Mika: It isn't the most album commercial album that I made so it takes time for it to be digested but once it is in the head and heart, it never gets out it! During the concerts, the public sings each lyric , it's truly incredible.. We discover again this album on stage , it becomes more accessible. L'essentiel: L’Atelier will be the smallest place in which you will sing during this tour… Mika: Yes and consequently I can't do the big show but it will be a concert filled with tons of energy, passionate, with lots of interractions with the public I know that many fans bought billets for that particular concert because it wiĺl be really special. But I will come back to Luxembourg with my big show in the coming months, I promise! L'essentiel: It is highly important for you not to copy-paste your show one night after the other. … Mika: But for me, it is just impossible to do the same thing twice , it would be horrible! Hello Patricia Blanc. Hello. You are the president of the association"imagine for margo" and your fight is showing everywhere , on buildings, in magazines, on TV, on internet. Is that important to keep talking about it ? Yes, absolutely, it' s very important to talk about it , first because this is the month for public awareness about children cancer (on an international level) and also because it is still that illness that makes the more victims among children which isn't known enough, so one of our first objective is to let people know so that they get mobilized. Is that important also that those faces are put into the light, we have seen the singer Mika in particular with those children. Is it important to have famous people associating with you? Yes, a famous person who gets involved is a very important for us because people identify more and follow us more, and they become interested and that's how it goes. It's true we are very lucky that Mika is involved with us, we are very proud of that. So there are two important people who got involved into this campaign, a photographer and as I was saying this Lebanese -French singer. How did you get in touch with those two famous people? Actually the photographer Peter Lindbergh was wishing to help us, to get involved and help the children suffering with cancer and he had this extraordinary and very generous idea to take children to the seaside in Arles in fact, where he takes his own photos , in Camargue where he shoots the biggest stars ? He told himself, I'll do that too for the children. With his passion and his talent. Exactly. With his team he shot the children , in the same way he does with the biggest stars, with his famous black box, that is Peter Lindbergh's very particular technique. He took them to the sea to shoot them, both for them and their families and whatsmore we had this will to make sure the children would have a wonderful time and that it would be a good way to speak about our cause. That's how our campaign was born and at the beginning there were those photos idea then we told ourselves that maybe it would be good to get someone famous involved in the project , someone who would be there for the children during that week end , and also for our cause and Mika said yes right away and he's been doing it with us for two years now, and this year he's also helping us by giving his image for the campaign photos and we are very proud of that. I imagine that for the children , it's a wonderful encounter. Yes, it was a wonderful surprise , whatsmore the first year they didn't expect that to happen at all , so Mika arrived on the beach hiding for his arrival to be a big surprise for the children , and whatsmore he was really very very close to them during the whole week end, he played with them on the beach, with a kite and building sandcastles and many other things. And on the evening in the restaurant they really spent great moments together. So this campaign is called "the little warriors"; there are six little warriors who went to Camargue. "Warrior' is a strong symbol to say they always fight against their illness without ever giving up. That's it , absolutely, they are true warriors and they teach us about life. Now we'll change the subject a bit an explain what your association does to collect funds for research. The fourth run of Enfants sans cancer will take place in September 27th. And it gets more and more successful since it started in 2012. Yes it is the fourth time the run takes place this year and we started with 600 runners , then 1000, then 1600 and this year we have more than 2000 runners involved. There's still a week left to join and it's true it's getting more and more successful and we are happy to see so many people getting involved, but each of this person raises funds for research. Why did you chose sports to promote your cause? Sports is good for health which is already a first message, and it's a good way to get people together because , in fact this event is open to everyone, you can run 5 or 10 kilometers, but you can also walk 5 kilometers. We wanted to create an event that everyone could be part of, related to sports and also to family , we have real runners ...and it's a bit sporty and very friendly and fun for families. Yes very friendly and family orientated and sporty too, with lots of generosity and solidarity because on that day, the researchers come and explain how they use the important funds we raise and give to them each year. And the figure of last year : 665 000 euros were raised and given to research. This is the biggest even in France as far as fundraising goes , in terms of a single cause, children cancer. This is we will raise a little bit more, we're almost there and we are very proud of the people who follow us and thanks to their generosity will allow to create a new program for a treatment which will include all children who had relapses , and for whom classical treatments do not work, regardless of what particular cancer they suffer from. So this event is also a way to tell people who get involved and give money: look, this is what we do with that money , it is going to help children and their families. Absolutely. The researchers come and explain what they do. What I also want to say and that is important concerning this event is that we give research 100 per cent of the founds that people have raised. Your fight is a mother's fight. You lost your daughter Margo who suffered from brain cancer. When you see all those initiatives, I mean people's reaction and famous people reaction, how do you feel? Are you moved? Yes of course, I'm moved . Margo left us a message "go, fight, win" so we keep on fighting that fight and the idea is to win against this illness and the fact to see more and more people around us , famous people getting involved and the generosity of people. To see that we manage to fund research programs and it's moving forward. It is important this research on the field of children cancer. It's too often forgotten that specific research against children is particularly complicated , very little money, very little funds, very little research. There is not much done for specific research about children cancer, it is still a rare desease ; the labs who make meds do not invest much either, so research must absolutely be boosted, so we get new treatments for children. Right now 80 percent of children with cancers are cured successfully which is a very good thing, and those children need to be cured in a better way, so they suffer less from the after-effects, and there are still 500 in France who die because of cancer each year,it's more than one a day. That's why there's a big need to help those children. An album, a time périod in life Normandie-actu : You often say that writing music helps you deal with your life? What part of your life does your new album, No Place in Heaven symbolize? Mika : I try to write about things that I can't do nor say in my regular life. When I wwas younger, I used to sing other people's songs, but I was disappointed because it didn't work with my very particular voice.So I wrote my own songs , which helped me and lead to something more important. When you listen to my records, you can follow the changes in my life. In the second, you can feel the fear of having shared too much; in the third, painful moments. In the last one, it's as if we are after the storm that was the third one, as if things started opening up again. Today I'm 32, so I made a very transparent album which is also very festive and organic. Normandie-actu : So the way you create songs is a true outlet for you? Mika: Yes, that's it. It's a way to deal with my life, but that allows me to stay discreet which is essential to me.Music is an elegant way to talk about oneself. It's not as if I was making confessions throughout tabloids's pages! Talking about one's life, one's work is an important thing, and it has to be done without feeling ashamed. « I want to live » Normandie-actu : With your melodies and your clips, you seem like a happy person, but I feel there's a true seriousness in you..... When I'm mad , I say it as honestly as when I'm happy! It's a huge privilegde to do my job because I feel free, and it made me softer, I don't waste my energy, nor my time anymore. For example, three years ago, I was not much on TV , because I used to say no to everything? I decided to change all that, to forget about my ego, and stop protecting myself so much. It was totally sillly to do that. Today, I just want to live. My schedule is four times more filled than before , but I feel four times lighter! Five years ago, I could have never been a judge in The Voice show, I wasn't ready? Doing this show in which we talk a lot , allowed me to show who I am as a person. Whatsmore , in France, this show evolved into something really special. Audiences are excellent , but mainly we are lucky as we have very good candidates. People know that the winer is not the only singer who will be able to start a true artistic project. For example, Kendji Girac, Frero Delavega et Louane, all of them have started a true career. As I travel a lot, I can tell you that it's not the case everywhere. Here, that program is less formated, less fake than elsewhere. It is based on the history of my roots, of theatre, of opera, within the context of my songs. It's a selection of titles among my four albums in a story which explains who I am, but with different versions, only for one evening. I aimed at created something that makes people marvel, no matter the age of the public, something delicious to watch. It's very important for me.
