Host: Since 2007, we’re all talking about him. Coming from nowhere, he fill in a sort of emptiness in a dying musical industry that was looking for new idols. But, before he knew success, the childhood of Mika wasn’t all pink. At school, his classmates weren’t nice and the singer rapidly found refuge in music. Mika: When i decided to write the album, those songs, it was a bit hard cause i started to think about all those things that happened when i was 16 or 17 that were tough. But i think that this period is defined byt the joy also. For teenagers, its easier to have extreme joy, extreme feelings. Theresa lot of strong happiness, but we’re very sad at the same time. But with joy, always comes a fragility. For me, it was really extreme emotions. That was me teenage years, like probably everyone else. Host: To try to have a breakthrough, he sends his demos to record labels. But the majors only see in him the new Robbie Williams, or a clone of Craig David. Mika refuses all the propositions. But in 2007, his talent is finally recognized by Universal Music and the young man, then 24 years old, explodes literally with his single Grace Kelly. Some people try to make money out of this dazzling success. In Belgium, this singer claims there is a scandal. She accuses the singer of stealing her name. The young woman goes into court to ban Mika’s Belgium shows, but in vain. This affair doesn’t compromise the promising debut of the young British man. His singles all make it to the top of the charts and the rewards keep coming in. The singer shatters the sales records in Belgium with 200.000 albums sold of LICM. Its 4 times more than the other records of albums sales. The sales in Europe makes you dizzy, with 5 millions copies sold. Who can do better? The artist is unstoppable and goes on tour. He went around the world 8 times in less than 2 years. Then, he takes some time to work on the followup of his first record. During 1 year, Mika hides and works without any contacts with the outside world. In June 2009, the pop’s prodigy comes back with an EP; Songs For Sorry. A brilliant marketing idea to rise up the pressure before his return, 4 months later. Mika: Even before i wrote the songs, i decided that i would only sell like a 1000 copies of the songs. A very limited EP. And because of that, i could write songs only for myself and the few other thousand people. I totally forgot about everyone else. It’s the bridge between the 2 stories. The first part, that was the first album, and the second part that is the second album. Host: In September, Mika is finally back with his second album, TBWKTM. A very personal album inspired by his own teenage years. Mika: in a way, it was a very difficult time. But there was also alot of joy. I think its difficult for everyone. We try to forget about it! Because, so many things are happening, its a rollercoaster. Host: We Are Golden, the first single of the new album, is a new success. In only a few days, Mika is once again in every television and radio. The goal is reached. Europe is ready for a new pop wave and his single Rain, that talks about a breakup, is in the same mood. Mika: When you start its hard. People say “oh, youre never gonna make it” Then when you do it people say “oh, youre never gonna make the second album. You’re never gonna make it to 40 years old. You’ll be drugged and tired and you wont do it anymore”. Its always hard. But im lucky to be doing what i do and you always need to find this joy and surprise in everything you do. Theres alot of pressure, but there was alot of pressure also 2 years ago. Theres gonna be alot of pressure when ill be 40 years old. You have to keep the same attitude and the same thick skin. And always learn something Host: But what the fans are waiting for the most is the beginning of the European tour that will start on March 12 in the Sportpaleis of Anvers. A show that you must not miss because Mika, on stage, is simply phenomenal. And this success story is still going on because of his new album, TBWKTM. Here’s an exclusive interview with Mika where he tells us about producing this new record. And of course, we couldn’t stop him from singing with his band.
