No don't be sorry. It's a perfectly good term - mother tongue- I meant to write it and forgot to use it , I just don't hear it so often. ... maybe because I don't often hear people talking about their mother tongues

It was my first language and then after I started school ,after a few years, I lost some because I insisted on speaking English so much at home. So Russian skills are lacking too (or as my mother has said... they're simply 'dormant' ) But there is no choice with my grandmother for example- only Russian there!

Good combination of languages.... very modern (as opposed to some centuries back I mean ). That's great ...I would think not so much in common which would be so nice but I have no idea though.

My mother is Russian and my father was Afghan... to my shame I still cannot speak Persian (thus the tutor... it's not a language usually offered alongside French or Spanish or Italian etc.)

yes that would make a difference my mother is a good cook but she is not Persian, so she is not as familiar with those dishes. I've heard my father was a very good cook but with Afghan and Persian dishes.
