The meeting was quick but it was great to see him again! I gifted him the book 'A Little Life' by Hanya Yanagihara. He heard about it but haven't had the chance to read it. He thanked me and told me he would be able to read it during the Christmas period. And we talked a little about books and reading in general, it was really cool! I was also able to show him my tattoo I made a few years ago. Sorry for the late answer! I just came back home from Paris and I had left my notes at home on my computer! But the explanations are pretty much the same that he gave in the tiktok videos he did. Mika : « Ma mère avait de l’ambition pour moi et a réussi à me sauver » À 40 ans, Mika, le chanteur aux trois octaves sort « Que ta tête fleurisse toujours », un nouvel album, le premier en français, avec déjà, un single très dansant, « C’est la vie », sur lequel figure Valérie Lemercier. Rencontre. Dès l’ouverture, vous donnez le ton avec « Bouge », une invitation au mouvement, à la danse. Comme une thérapie de groupe ? Oui, on peut bouger, danser pour évacuer son stress et dire tout ce qui ne va pas dans sa vie, sans pour cela se soumettre à certains diktats de la pub. C’est une façon poétique de résister. Alors on bouge, on danse, peut-être même jusqu’en enfer. C’est Valérie Lemercier qui, dans un taxi, m’a dit un jour, énervée : « J’en ai marre de ces pubs où on nous ordonne de bouger, de faire comme ça, de manger ceci, pas cela ». Je crois qu’elle a raison. Chacun doit être libre de faire ce qu’il veut, de bouger ou pas, de sauter en l’air ou pas. Cela m’a donné l’idée de cette chanson à laquelle elle prête sa voix. J’aime beaucoup la fantaisie de Valérie Lemercier. Comment avez-vous connu Valérie Lemercier ? On s’est retrouvé par hasard tous les deux sur un sofa à une fête de Noël. Je déteste les fêtes, elle aussi, ça tombait bien. Je crois qu’elle s’ennuyait un peu. Alors, on a parlé pendant deux heures de tout et de rien. J’aime beaucoup la fantaisie qu’elle a en elle, spontanée, pas artificielle. Cela lui donne une personnalité hors du commun et j’ai tenu à ce qu’elle soit à mes côtés en studio. Elle participe aussi aux voix de votre chanson intitulée Jane Birkin. Que représentait cette dernière pour vous ? Beaucoup de souvenirs liés à mon adolescence. Mais cette chanson n’est pas de circonstance, je l’ai écrite avant sa disparition. Pour moi, elle est une véritable icône de la chanson francophone. Elle pouvait parler de tout, d’amour, de politique, de sexe, de nudité mais en restant toujours poétique, jamais vulgaire. Contrairement à ceux qui se taisent par peur ou prudence, elle n’avait pas peur de s’exprimer, de s’engager. Je pense à elle et je chante : « Je rêve d’un amour à la Birkin/Tous ces regards qui m’assassinent/Je suis tellement mal à l’aise dans ma peau ». Il y a aussi un titre très personnel, « C’est la vie ». Une forme de bilan, déjà ? Oui, si on veut et un constat de ce qui ne va pas et tout ce qui est triste et frustrant pour les autres et moi-même. Je parle même de mon âge, de la mort (rires). Mais il y a toujours de la magie dans le gris. D’où vient le titre de votre album « Que ta tête fleurisse toujours » ? C’est une expression de ma mère récemment disparue. Elle avait un cancer cérébral, un glioblastome qui la rongeait. Sur l’IPad que je lui ai offert pour mieux communiquer, elle faisait des dessins avec son doigt et, pour mon anniversaire, elle a dessiné mon portrait de style naïf avec des fleurs sur la tête. Elle m’a dit : « Mon cher Mika, que ta tête fleurisse toujours ». Je me suis rendu compte, plus tard, qu’elle me donnait la clé pour le reste de ma vie, personnelle et artistique. Je lui dois beaucoup. On a travaillé ensemble depuis mes sept ans. C’était mon coach cinq heures par jour. Je me souviens d’avoir fait la route avec elle, dans notre Toyota, quand je faisais des tours de chant classiques. Pas d’hébergement, on dormait dans la voiture ! Vous a-t-elle donné confiance en vous ? Oui, et surtout, elle m’a aidé à construire un système de valeurs pour moi-même, parce qu’à l’école, je me sentais exclu. À huit ans, je croyais que ma vie ne valait rien. J’allais vraiment la détruire, et détruire celle des autres. Comment s’en sortir ? Il y a l’art, la musique, le sport. Ma mère avait de l’ambition pour moi et a réussi à me sauver Comment définiriez-vous votre style musical ? French pop ? C’est de la pop alternative, ouverte à de nombreux courants. L’éclectisme, la diversité font partie de mon ADN et de mon regard sur le monde. Il y a des cuivres et des rythmes de calypso sur « Sweetie Banana », des cordes et du programming sur « Moi, Andy et Paris ». Je m’autorise tous les mélanges musicaux sans pour autant perdre mon propre style. Vous êtes né le 18 août 1983 à Beyrouth et avez aujourd’hui la nationalité américaine. Pourquoi chantez-vous en français ? C’est un énorme challenge pour moi et je ne cherche à cacher ni mes fautes de syntaxe ni mon accent. Le français est un lien avec mon enfance au Liban. C’est un peu bizarre parce que ce n’est pas du tout le choix commercial le plus efficace à l’international mais je m’y accroche. La langue française m’a obligé à m’exprimer d’une autre manière, à aller au plus profond de moi, sans mes repères habituels, à abandonner mes automatismes, à évoluer artistiquement. Le français est devenu un refuge, une bulle où je peux être beaucoup plus impliqué dans ma vie personnelle que dans mon précédent album, que j’adore par ailleurs, « My name is Michael Holbrook » (2019). Que vous apporte le succès ? Beaucoup d’opportunités et pas mal de complications aussi. La créativité ne s’achète pas. Le succès assure la liberté de pouvoir gagner sa vie avec la musique, ce qui est formidable, un immense privilège. En fait, il faut savoir se libérer de l’idée du succès parce que ça ne sert à rien, sinon à exister dans le regard des autres. Translation
