Tiny mention in a review of the festival in the Evening Standard:

"Among other highlights was a charming gig by Elton John protégé and vocal marvel, Joesef, at the Big Top; a secret set by James Bay who brought grown men to the verge of tears; a short but joyful show from an exceptionally toned Mika; and a killer performance from the Sugababes, who’ve gone from strength to strength since reuniting last year".

Isle of Wight Festival review:

Sugababes and Blondie shone amid a mishmash of music

The site is sprawling, as was the range of music on offer

What do N-Dubz and the Royal Family have in common?

Both were in the Isle of Wight this weekend as Mike and Zara Tindall skipped the King’s birthday to attend the annual festival on the outskirts of Newport.

Nostalgia was en vogue as crowds descended in their thousands to see the likes of Blondie and The Human League, while parents and teenagers gathered for late night revelry under Seventies-themed marquees and in tea barns turned to silent discos.

In a landscape of increasingly gentrified festivals, the Isle of Wight sought to retain the democratic ethos of its Sixties’ origins. It’s not a place for morning yoga classes or podcast recordings in tents named after roman landmarks. It’s a good old boozy affair with fairground rides and fancy dress: great fun, no fuss, but still – at £225 a ticket it’s not exactly cheap.

As is a perennial problem with festivals, the food and drinks were overpriced and often quite average, with a shortage of tap water behind bars and food carts charging £12 for gyros without fries and a whopping £13 for tiddly, six-inch margheritas.

The site is sprawling, as was the range of music on offer. From folk to pop to big beat, the main stage hosted one of the most eclectic rosters in the festival’s history. Pulp dazzled on Friday night as Jarvis Cocker donned tailored flares and leather boots for high octane renditions of Babies and Disco 2000, before paying tribute to the band’s late bassist Steve Mackey and bringing the house down with Common People.

Among other highlights was a charming gig by Elton John protégé and vocal marvel, Joesef, at the Big Top; a secret set by James Bay who brought grown men to the verge of tears;

a short but joyful show from an exceptionally toned Mika; and a killer performance from the Sugababes, who’ve gone from strength to strength since reuniting last year.

Though this year’s shortage of female artists (all headliners were men) is undeniable, two standouts came in the shape of the ‘Babes and the indomitable Debbie Harry, who stunned on the main stage ahead of her performance at Glastonbury this weekend. Robbie Williams, meanwhile, emerged as the Isle of Wight’s ultimate crowd pleaser. After pausing his headline set at Netherlands festival Pinkpop the previous night – citing exhustion from long Covid – Williams seemed back on top form, covering Oasis’ Dont Look Back in Anger, and closing out the festival with Angels.

Organising such an orgy of talent is difficult, and this weekend proved occasionally disorienting. Putting The Chemical Brothers back to back with George Ezra on the main stage was a tad miscalculated. The crowd, still riding high on a Budapest singalong ten-thousand voices strong, was then plunged into a rave with strobe lighting and intense video graphics accompanying the duo’s live set. It felt jarring and confused.

In a festival too big to showcase just one style of music, but which currently has too few stages to reflect its diversity across the grounds, a clash of cultures is bound to happen. But it’s also an easy fix – if sponsor Barclaycard are willing to foot the bill for it.

Mika jumps in the crowd at Isle of Wight Festival 2023 VIDEO

19th June

Fans of Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) singer Mika were in for a treat when the pop sensation jumped in with the crowd at Isle of Wight Festival 2023.

The star, who is famed for hits such as Lollipop and We Are Golden, was playing his first festival in eight years.

He didn't let the rain dampen his spirits as he performed a number of his classics on Sunday.

His performance brought with it costume changes, including a voluminous green cloak and an oversized lion hat.

At one point, Mika jumped into the crowd to sing Big Girl.

Watch Mika perform from the crowd...

He can be seen singing while an audience member jumps on his shoulders.

The moment was captured from the audience by Grace Poynter.

A bit later he continues to sing as he gets on an audience member's shoulders.

He finished with Grace Kelly and went off to the crowd chanting, 'Mika, Mika'.

On Twitter, Mika said 'the audience was a ray of sunshine under the pouring rain'.

My Name is Michael Holbrook.

L'Isle of Wight Festival

As I have Wifi now, here are my videos:

Lollipop intro

The sky was kind to the yellow grass, which urgently needed water. :naughty: And hey, if our heads are supposed to bloom, a rainshower can't hurt either. :lol3: Well, flowers wasn't much of a topic in this short show, he only had the big white flower for Ice Cream. And Nina got to hold it again. :teehee: And Mika teased the crowd with the flower, holding it above them so they could just touch it with their fingertips.

Big Girl intro

Big Girl in the crowd / on stage with LGBTQ+ flag

Relax

Relax, with the hat he asked the woman behind us to give him. She was from Amsterdam and follows Blondie. Some of Blondie's fans were wearing hats like that, but hers was a bit more glittery & colourful than the others (and closest to the front, I think ). He asked us to sing, and said that only if we sing loud enough she'd get the hat back. :lmfao:

Happy Ending

End of Happy Ending. Love the effect of the lights on my wet camera lens at the end. :lol3:

We Are Golden. Some guy on the left sprayed some liquid towards Mika, and Mika said "I don't know what it is, but it tastes really good!" :lmfao: So here you can see Mika opening his mouth widely, to get more of that mysterious liquid. :teehee:

In fact, after Mika's set, I saw a guy carrying a huge spray thing and asked if that was him who sprayed that towards Mika. He said yes, and I asked what it was... it was soap bubbles. So maybe that was a misunderstanding and he had just sprayed soap bubbles, while someone else sprayed whatever that liquid was. Either that, or Mika likes the taste of soap. :naughty: (who knows what catching Covid 5 times has done to his taste buds? 🙈)

Grace Kelly, & getting the tiger head (it's cute how he always tries to hide that huge thing :teehee:)

Saying goodbye & crowd chanting "Mika! Mika!"

As the Wifi is slow here, I'll upload the rest of my videos when I have Wifi the next time... need to sleep now. I'm off to London tomorrow morning, for sightseeing / maybe shopping, and Abba Voyage. :biggrin2:

Edit: Finally finished uploading them all!

Just uploaded the rest of my videos in that post. :thumb_yello:
