Owen Gibson, media correspondent

Wednesday December 12, 2007

The Guardian

Her ups and downs, and there have been more of the latter than the former, have been meticulously charted by the paparazzi. But frenzied tabloid coverage of her wayward lifestyle, cancelled gigs, incarcerated husband and frail health have done little to harm Amy Winehouse's record sales.Apple's iTunes online music store yesterday revealed that Back to Black, her critically acclaimed album released in 2006, was its bestselling download of the year.

The download store, the most popular digital retailer, said Grace Kelly by colourful newcomer Mika was iTunes' bestselling single track of the year.

Oliver Schusser, director of iTunes Europe, said the makeup of the chart proved that digital consumers were now broadly aligned with mainstream tastes. In previous years, the iTunes chart had tended to reflect the profile of iPod owners, with more rock, indie and classic artists, but the device was now so ubiquitous and downloading so popular that there was little difference between the digital and physical charts."2007 has been a fantastic year for digital music. We've grown our catalogue from 3m to 6m," he said.

The digital and physical charts have been merged since 2005. For the first time this year, digital releases no longer had to be tethered to a physical release.

The iTunes annual charts also reflect another of the musical trends of 2007: the return of pop. From X-Factor winner Leona Lewis to Mika's larger than life take and the return of Take That, the charts were poppier than they had been for years.

Digital sales also appear to have prolonged the lifespan of hit singles, with most of those in the top 10 spending months in the chart.

Not everyone in the music industry has been complimentary about the dominance of the iTunes music store in the digital market, with some speaking out about its refusal to countenance a wider range of pricing.

But Schusser said iTunes had been positive for the industry and labels were becoming increasingly sophisticated in how they marketed artists through the store.

The booming popularity of digital downloads has still not been enough to compensate for declining physical sales and the effects of piracy, as traditional record companies have continued to struggle to remodel their businesses for the digital age.
