シングル「Grace Kelly｣が　５週連続、全英チャート1位。
デビュー作『Life In Cartoon Motion』も　初登場で1位に。
Indie rock が大勢を占めているはずのUKシーンで　POP・センセーションを巻き起こしているのが　24歳の songwriter /performer のMIKAだ。
その彼が　遂に日本にも上陸。ライヴでは　その５オクターブの声域と多彩な曲の数々、ずば抜けて魅力的なパフォーマンスを　披露した。
この突然現れたポップ・スター、孤独で傷ついた人々に　祝福を与える幸福の王子は、いかにして作られたのか？

この世界に居場所を見つけられず、いじめられ、無視され、孤独を抱える人々の物語を、彼は　きらびやかで　ハイパーで　ダーティな曲に綴り、ハイトーン・ヴォイスで歌ってみせる。彼や彼女に　とりわけ　美しい冠をかぶせる　ために。
醜いアヒルの子が　白鳥に生まれ変わる瞬間を　見せるために。

●前回は、あなたの音楽が　いかに　こんなに折衷的になったか、という話をしました。実際、OPERAから　DISCO、　PIANO　BALLAD　まで、ありとあらゆる　STYLE　を　POP　に　料理しているのに、不思議と　BEATLES風の　60's　Rock'n'roll　だけがない。
それは　意識的に避けているのですか？

M　そうだね。意識的っていうよりは、本能的なものだと思う。　僕には　BEATLES　への　obsession　がなくて、むしろ何も感じないんだ。
だって、考えてもみてよ。　大阪でも東京でもN.Y.でもLondonでも、街を歩いたり、ごく普通に生活してたら、一日中　BEATLES　の音楽にさらされて、攻撃されるじゃない？　BEATLES　への引用や、BEATLESの歌詞、メロディ。　一日　何度も　そういうのに　ぶつかるんだ。　iPod　のコマーシャルに　映画の B.G.M.、雑誌のフレーズ。そういうのに24時間さらされて育つと、感覚を失っちゃうんだよね。で、そこから自分を切り離したくなるんだ。でも、僕の年齢だったら、同じようにかんじている人達が大勢いるんじゃないかな。まぁ、僕の音楽には　BEATLES　から　取ってきてるものもあるんだけど。BEATLES　で本当にエキサイティングだったのは・・・・・やっぱり、あの　song writing の　シンプルさはみとめなきゃね。だって、それによって　彼らは歌詞にチカラを与えたんだよ。ものすごく複雑なことを語っているのに、すごくシンプルな言葉と　直接的なフレーズなんだよね。しかも、それが　キャッチーな　メロディに　乗せられてる。そういったコンビネーションが　メッセージを　効果的に、パワフルに伝えるんだ。すると突然、全ての人々を包括するようなものになる。クリエイティヴな　ヴィジョンを　妥協することなしに。それって　すごい事なんだよね。BEATLESは、非常に多様な　サウンドスケープを進化させていった。すごく洗練されてるのに、彼らは　それを　オーガニックに　やり遂げたんだ。 僕が好きなのは、ビッグなサウンドの　ラジオ・フレンドリーな　ポップ・ミュージックなのに、すごく　オーガニックだってところ。　僕自身、 永遠にそこから　離れないと思う。　絶対に　エレクトリックな　アルバムなんて作らないね。興味がない。　僕には　オーガニックで　伝統的な　レコーディング・メソッドが必要なんだ。ヒューマンな感触を与える為に。　たぶん、僕が取り入れてるのは　そこだな。　そう、僕は・・・・・・BEATLES　みたいには聞こえない　ポップ・ミュージックを作ってるけど、同時に、すごく似た方法でレコーディングしてる。　実際、彼らが使った同じ　スタジオで録音した曲もあるんだ　（笑）。　L.A.のスタジオでね。


●あなたは　独学で音楽を　学んだんですよね？

M　うん、ほとんどは。London　の　Royal College of Music, には入学したんだけど。でも　僕、難読症があって、楽譜が読めないんだ。自分で読み書きするのも　普段は難しいんだよ。だから　ピアノを弾くにも、自分で　メロディを作らなきゃ、そもそも弾けなかった。　そうやって　作曲するようになったんだ。だってさ、僕の妹なんて、楽譜を　さらっと見て　モーツァルトがぱらぱらって弾けるんだよ？　僕、すっごく嫉妬しててさ。だから代わりに、自分で　ちょっとした曲を書いて。ひどい曲も　あったけど・・・・・　ありがたいことに、ちょっとずつ上手くなってきたんだよね　（笑）
