MIINA Posted July 25, 2009 Share Posted July 25, 2009 I wrote to HMV last week to ask them to confirm the release date, as Japan is going to get the album a few days earlier it seems, and I am sure that will be incorrect. They will probably write to us later and say it was delayed, even though we know their date is probably wrong! Interesting that he has included a track from Sadlers wells on the JP edition...wonder which one..and I wonder what the bonus track is....maybe something off the EP. Title is still not fixed according to Mika in radio interviews this week... Now, more importantly, on Italian radio yesterday and also while speaking to MFCers outside the radio station, he said he got this jacket in JAPAN!!!! MIKA MIKA が他のあらゆるアーティストの誰とも異なっているというのは、今ではもう明らかなことだ。彼の苗字が「シンギュラー（＝唯一無二）」だったとしても、不思 議はないだろう。群れることなく独立独歩の道を歩んでいる男性ポップ・スターは、彼の同世代には数少ないが、自身で創り上げた想像性溢れる音楽ワールドを 身にまとっている彼は、まさしくその１人だと言える。幼少時よりクラシック音楽の教育を受け、複数の人種の血が流れ、また芝居がかった身振りをしがちな彼 は、大仰な自己表現の系譜を受け継ぐ後継者となっている。MIKA曰く、彼の音楽を要約するのは簡単で、「基本原則としては、喜びに溢れていて、聴いてる と力が湧いてくるようなもの。そして流行にも因襲にも追従しないもの」であり、昔ながらの、殆ど忘れられかけていたポップの概念を呼び起こしてくれるもの である。その概念とは、つまり"個性"だ。 もし彼のデビュー・アルバム『ライフ・イン・カートゥン・モーション』（LIFE IN CARTOON MOTION）が、その個性を断固として表明する名刺代わりだったとすれば、今回のセカンド・アルバムは、彼が１人で創り上げてきた、物怖じしないポップ さ全開サウンドの成熟の表れだと言えよう。数オクターブを跨ぐその声、名演奏家の域に達するピアノ、ゴロゴロと鳴るリズムに、爆発的な各曲のフィナーレ、 人間の不安や自信のなさの核心を突くために誇張した物語仕立て、そして印象的な極彩色のポップ・プロダクション、その全てがしかるべき場所に配されている のだ。「今回のアルバム作りに取りかかった時、まず何よりも重要だと考えていたのは、（自分の身に起きたことに対する）反作用的な作品にはしないでいよ うってことだったんだ」と彼は語る。「僕は原点に立ち返らなくてはならなかった。つまり、僕が自然にやっていることに対して人々が意見を言ったりしていな かった頃に戻らなくちゃいけなかったんだよ」。万華鏡のようなMIKAのポップ・ドリームが放つ第２弾である、今回のセカンド・アルバムを一聴した時に、 まず頭に思い浮かぶ言葉は「大胆不敵」。 これ以外にはないだろう。 MIKAがポップ界における第一歩を踏み出したのは、大ヒット・シングル「グレース・ケリー」によってだ。同シングルは全世界で約300万枚売り上げ、ダ ウンロードのみで全英チャートの首位に立った史上２番目のシングルであった。デビュー・アルバム『ライフ・イン・カートゥン・モーション』からリリースさ れたシングルの総売上げは600万枚を超え、同アルバム自体のセールスもまた、500万枚を突破。それに加え、MIKAは数々の音楽賞にノミネートされ受 賞を果たしてきたが、そこにはブリット・アウォーズやグラミー賞、アイヴァー・ノヴェロ賞を始め、キャピタル・レディオ、Ｑ誌、ワールド・ミュージック・ アウォーズ、BT＆ヴォーダフォン、ヴァージン・メディア、MTVヨーロッパ／アジア／オーストラリア／日本などが含まれている。しかし数字や記録など は、彼がポップ・ミュージック論争に参戦した場合に、ポップ・ミュージックの本質を把握しているのは彼の方だということを言外に仄めかすために使うもので しかない。要するに統計とは、ポップ界が生んだ最大のアウトサイダーであっても、そこを征服し得るのだということを、手っ取り早く立証してくれる手立てな のだ。 カサブランカ／アイランドと契約するまで、数え切れないほどのメジャー・レーベルに散々酷評され、冷たくあしらわれてきたMIKA。その経緯は「グレー ス・ケリー」の歌詞に詳しく描かれている通りだ。彼の成功は、一過性の流行に対する、ヴィジョンと中身の勝利であった。同世代のポップ・スターに比べ、彼 は敢えて茨の道を歩んで来たと言えよう。それは彼が、レコード会社のお偉方を喜ばせることによって手っ取り早い見返りを得ようとするのではなく、自らの ポップ原則にあくまでも拘ることによって、息長く続けていくという考えを大事にしていたからだ。 第２作目に当たり、楽曲は変化したかもしれないが、彼のアティテュード自体は以前と変わりはない。即座に聴き手の心を掴むサビが印象的な「We Are Golden」から、1940年代のディズニー映画を思い起こさせるナンバー（「Toyboy」）や、胸にジーンと迫る80年代パワーポップの現代版 （「Touches You」）まで、歴史的な名作と触れ合うことをも快く受け入れる、視野の広さがそこにはある。またローラースケート・ディスコのアンセム（「Rain」） から、個人的なトラウマ体験をメランコリックに追想する曲（「Dr John」）に至るまで、彼の音楽は、あらゆる矛盾や複雑な状況に満ちた21世紀に生きるということが何を意味するかということに対する、率直かつ素直な 考え方に支えられている。もう一つ、MIKAの特別な所とは何だろうか？ それは彼がビッグになることを怖れていない点だ。例えばロック界においては、 U2が築いてきた枠組みの虜になっているバンドの場合、アリーナの隅々まで行き渡るような感情表現を試みることでリスペクトされるが、ポップ界において は、自らを惜しみなく与える気前の良さというのは殆ど消え失せてしまっている。せいぜい自分たちのCDを実際に買ってくれる見込みなどなさそうな読者層 の、男性誌のために肌を露出することも厭わない若い女性に残されてる程度だろう。MIKAはそんな状況を改善しようとしているのである。 デビュー作に向けられた嵐のような賞賛や爆発的なセールスが明らかとなり、またアルバムを高く評価する人々の生（ナマ）の声を受けて個人的な達成感を噛み 締めるようになった頃、ロスでアパートメントを探し、そこで次作の構想を練り、形にして、曲作りをすることにしたMIKA。そして洒落た部屋を見つけ、ロ ンドンの地下室を引き払ってロスに拠点を移した彼は、プロデューサーであり、彼にとっての音楽的共謀者であるグレッグ・ウェルズと作業を開始した。その後 そこに介入してきたのが、MIKAの母親である。「母は僕に『快適過ぎる環境に身を置いてはいけない』って言ってくれたんだ」と、MIKAは当時を振り返 る。それは息子としては無視することのできない、経験に富んだ者の含蓄ある言葉であった。それを受けて彼は、デビュー作を生み出した原点である安ホテルへ と立ち戻ることに。圧倒的な魅力を放つ"MIKA物語"の第２部を作るに当たって、脚光の中で過ごしてきたきらびやかな２年の日々が教えてくれたことの全 てを、彼は一旦念頭から消そうと心に決めたのだった。「僕にとってこれは、今も"ベッドルーム・ミュージック"（＝自分の寝室で思うがままに１人で作って いる、宅録音楽）なんだよね。ピアノの前に座り、自分が伝えなきゃいけないいことを表現するのが大事なんだ」。 「ファースト・アルバムは僕にとって、」と言葉を続けるMIKA。「幼少時代を描いたものだった。そういう無垢さがあったんだ。今回のアルバムはそこから 10年後が舞台で、青春時代の心境になっている。10代の青年期って、人生で一番輝かしい時期の一つなんだよね。いわゆる人生経験、例えばセックスや、ド ラッグや、恋愛、そういったことがどれもまだ新鮮で、まだ汚れを知らない時期だってこと。自分がそういったことを曲で表現しようと思ったら、より個人的な 体験に立ち返らなくちゃいけないと思ったんだ」。そこでMIKAは、今回の２作目では、架空のキャラクターを土台に物語を描いていた前作『ライフ・イン・ カートゥン・モーション』とは異なる路線を取ることにした。「僕は今でも神秘性を信じてるよ。それに自分の人生についてはもう何ひとつ、正当化しなきゃい けない必要性を感じてない。なぜなら何もかもが僕の曲の中で表現されているからね。僕にとって曲作りというのは、自分自身を理解するための一つの方法なん だ」。 とはいえ、一人称で曲を書くことに関して、彼が少しも怯んでいなかったというわけではない。「喜びにはリスクが付き物なんだ。人は、何か事が起きた最初の 時のことをついつい忘れてしまいがちだし、それって危険なことなんだよね。僕は、自分自身についての曲を書くということの現実に立ち向かわなくてはならな かった。怖かったよ。40年代のレヴュー歌手のように自らを描き出そうというつもりでないのなら、これは僕が乗り越えなくてはいけないことだったんだ」。 この感覚に付随していたのが、批判を怖れないという、MIKAの昔からの信念であった。「ポピュラー・ソングライターとして、ポップ・ソングの在るべき領 域から踏み出すことは許されないと考えるのは、近視眼的だよ。でないと笑われるから、って。でも僕にとって、完全無欠のポップ・ソングっていうのは、いつ か手に入れたいとずっと夢見ていたジャケットを試着しているような気分を味わえるものでなくてはいけないんだ」。 MIKAの素晴らしさの肝は、彼自身が抱える様々な不安や悩みの相関関係を、自分の曲に登場するキャラクターに仮託しながら突き止めようとしている所にあ る。彼らはお互いの違いに満足感を覚えたり、それと格闘したりしているが、それはMIKA自身が子供の頃からしてきたことだ。そういった外層の部分は、今 回は別の物に置き換わっているが、よりオープンになったこの新たなパフォーマーにとっては、壮麗さにおいても物語の筋立ての複雑さにおいても、今作が以前 に比べて劣る所は少しもない。それぞれの人間が抱える違いを小さなラメで飾り、それを讃え合おうじゃないかと人々に呼びかける"総動員令"は、昔からポッ プが音楽に授けてきた最も素敵な贈り物の一つである。MIKAは今回の作品でもまた、それぞれ特有の闇を描き出しているが、中でも最も注目に値するのは、 「Dr John」の刺激的なメロディと、騒々しくも華麗な「Blame It On The Girls」の中心に据えられた、錯乱寸前のジレンマ状態だ。 反対に屈せず自分の意見を曲げなかったことにより、初めてのアルバムでMIKAが華々しい成功を収めたため、レーベルの首脳からは「今回も彼に干渉しない ように」との個人的な命令が下されていたという。「僕はずっと護られているんだ。余計な外部からの干渉は一切遮断されていて、本当に完全に１人にしてもら えたんだよ」。初めのうちはその孤独と折り合いをつけることに難しさを感じていたかもしれないが、彼はそれを実に変わった方法で覆している。「規律正しさ が解決してくれたんだ。毎朝僕は10時にスタジオに行き、毎日同じ場所でランチを取って、それから毎晩７時に同じパブに通ったんだよ」。MIKAには、広 範囲の事柄を一度に扱おうとする傾向があるが、その全てが１つの同じカメラで撮影した映像のように感じられなくてはならないという。「僕が一緒に仕事をし ている人たち全員に、『自分たちが今存在しているのは、MIKAの世界の中だけだ』っていう共通認識があるんだ。僕らは他の音楽は一切聴かない。自分たち の世界だけに没頭するんだよ」。 今回のセカンド・アルバムの制作過程で、自分自身の一部を手放すことにより、自分の中の何かを解放することができたというMIKA。「解き放たれた気分だ よ。次なる場所に到達したんだ。そうする必要が僕にはあったし、３作目、４作目を作る上で、きっと役立つであろう過程を克服した。ようやく僕は、自分の" 小さなベッドルームで作った作品"が、もはやベッドルームの中で終わる作品ではないのだという事実に、そして自分がソングライターなんだという事実に、折 り合いをつけられたんだと思う」。 それだけじゃない。最高の素晴らしいポップ・スターではないか。 Summary:New album is DARING, he's very individual. I heard from HMV that it was decided to sell only this version finally in Japan. http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/3649308 and they received this info from Universal music.
