kaeryana
I think of it more like wild high school/college kids. Maybe because I am one, but you know "running around like clowns on purpose," "young and wanting some," not "giving a damn" about anything, trying to find happiness and love but maybe being a little too crazy! and then when people look at you like, "wow look at that crazy idiot dancing around," it's like.... shut up. We're Golden. that sounds like me in a way
CalicoSkies
We are Golden is definatly a coming of age song. The music video is really what whats the song for me. *shifty eyes*
The Dragon Lady
Oh my god, Mari, good find!!! Let's see (I may be wrong, but I'll have a go): "Running, running around Sick of acting the clown Leaves me nothing to do But have to think of you So much left to go wrong Didn't knew I belonged If I had words for hate Would I have lived this way? Oh, I'm sitting alone And I'm looking for help Left here on my own I'm gonna hurt myself Many years have gone by I'm still wonderin' why I ever let the world, let it bleed me dry". This is just... fantastic. Wow, I'm speechless. Girls (Mari, Nono and Mana), thanks so much! What an amazing version of the song! The added verses are brilliant and make the song that much more poignant. BRAVO MIKA!

The Dragon Lady
I love this! Thanks for the link, and also thanks to Lollipop Monkey for the lyrics, they're fantastic. Whenever I hear this, I feel like it's telling two stories. You know, the misunderstood teens, but the parents too. After Oh, I'm sitting alone And I'm looking for help Left here on my own I'm gonna hurt myself Many years have gone by I'm still wonderin' why I ever let the world, let it bleed me dry". There's the whispered "We are not what you think we are" bit, and I feel like that's the parents swooping in, letting the teens know that they're misunderstood too. And then the final "we are golden"s and choruses is everyone singing together, reunited! Yes. I had to share my two cents. Hope that's okay. Hey bitter.icarus! I love your interpretation of the lyrics! I hadn't looked at it this way until I read you post, but what you are putting forth makes so much sense. You are right, it isn't just teenagers who are misunderstood, parents are misunderstood too. Very perceptive indeed!

When was it ever explicit?

Blue Sky
Lyrics according to the Japanese printed lyrics: Teenage dreams in a teenage circus Running around like a clown on purpose Who gives a damn about the family you come from? No giving up when you’re young and you want some Running around again Running from running Waking up In the midday sun What’s to live for? When you could see what I’d done I stay out of motion In the light of day I was hiding From the things that you’d say We are not what you think we are We are golden, we are golden. We are not what you think we are We are golden, we are golden. Teenage dreams in a teenage circus Running around like a clown on purpose Who gives a damn about the family you come from? No giving up when you’re young and you want some Running around again Running from running Running around again Running from running I was a boy At an open door Why are you staring Do you still think that you know? Looking for treasure In the things that you threw Like a magpie I live for glitter, not you We are not what you think we are We are golden, we are golden. We are not what you think we are We are golden, we are golden. Teenage dreams in a teenage circus Running around like a clown on purpose Who gives a damn about the family you come from? No giving up when you’re young and you want some Now I'm sitting alone And I'm looking for help Left here on my own I'm gonna hurt myself Many years have gone by {YES! I was right!} But I'm wondering why {he sings I'm still wondering why} I ever let the world, let it bleed me dry We are not what you think we are We are not what you think we are We are not what you think we are We are golden, we are golden Teenage dreams in a teenage circus Running around like a clown on purpose Who gives a damn about the family you come from? No giving up when you’re young and you want some Running around again Running from running Running around again Running from running We are not what you think we are We are golden, we are golden. We are not what you think we are We are golden, we are golden. We are not what you think we are We are golden, we are golden.
