  1. Before Snowdon revealed the secret 'monitoring' of the government on civilian internet use, I was still deeply worried about the internet. It's great for resource for research and learning, as well as keeping up to date with current affairs. However, sometimes it seems that internet communication is taking over real-life communication and conversation. So much gossip and nastiness goes on through social networking, as well as encouraging narcissistic tendencies (I forget who made this valid point). Cyberbullying aside, people often seem to be more willing to tweet about themselves or snapchat 'selfies' than actually have a real conversation. It is particularly frustrating for me as a conscientious objector to social networking! I do feel uncomfortable about being spied on over the web, and think that maybe other methods of terrorist prevention could be used to better effect- call me old fashioned and naive, but it seems that insufficient monitoring of travelling to other countries and bag searching tend to be responsible for many of recent terrorist attacks. Having said that, I do somewhat disagree with Mika: it's not that GCHQ appear interested at all collect data on our personal lives or anything, they just want to try to detect extremist people before they do something nasty. Where they draw the line at intrusion of privacy vs. public safety is another matter entirely though... Why do I feel so uncomfortable about posting on this subject? It just seems risky somehow!
  2. Tricky one! It would probably have to be his eyes, smile and laugh!
  3. I'm so pleased for all of you that it was amazing (although are Mika gigs ever anything else?)! I have to say that his eyes are so much more in real life than photo or video and I didn't think that was possible. They had that same effect on me when I saw him in Manchester last year, gave me a wobbly feeling inside! It must be because he actually looks at YOU as opposed to a camera!
  4. BIOTG in school today from a classroom near mine. I still have no clue why, not least because apart from some of LICM, Mika's basically unheard of here. I was trying my best not to sing and dance along to it!

    Hi!

Hello and WELCOME! Hope you have a great time discussing all things Mika and everything else on here. Manchester has very happy memories for me as it was the first place I got to see Mika live (the best night of my life so far!) It's great to see so many new fans joining!
  6. I think it's great that on the MFC we can actually express our opinions and not just passively agree with Mika and each other all the time. Obviously the forum is a great way to keep up with mikanews, but it's so much more than that! It's fascinating to hear from other people all around the globe whether talking about Mika or something completely unrelated. Hopefully this thread can calm some of the MFC 'haters' (I don't wanna be provocative by using this word) down, and make them realise that the main thing that groups us all together in the first place is fandom of Mika himself. Whether Mika's fans love or hate the MFC, it's in everyone's best interests to keep it peaceful, even if it's just for Mika's sake. A similar thread (with the help of some subtly-phrased tweets)managed to get Kodes100 to post nice things about Mika on YouTube, rather than nasty things about the MFC, which I am so pleased about. Maybe we could try a similar tactic for others.
  7. Where should I start? Lots of people have posted very similar points of view to me on here, but I'd just like to add mine. More than ever before, cyber bullying is becoming a serious issue. The fact that it's a very new form of bullying doesn't help matters, but the main horrible thing about cyber bullying is that there is no escaping it. If you are bullied at school (and I was), at least you can have home as your refuge. Cyberbullying just carries on, wherever you are, whatever the time. A significant difference between electronic communication and real-life interaction is the lack of emotion conveyed by text. Gently teasing comments can so easily be interpreted the wrong way, and it's virtually impossible to tell if somebody is getting upset. Often people write things that they would never dream of saying to someone's face, because it can be done without really thinking about the other person's feelings. Sadly, so many instances of nasty cyberbullying do not end happily, and has tragic effects on its victims and people surrounding them. This happened at my old school, and is much too common. I have very valid reasons for staying off social networking sites (the MFC is as far as I get), yet still manage to have an active social life (I speak, phone, text and email). About a year ago, somebody famous wrote an article saying we should be suspicious of anyone without a Facebook account. This is so frustrating as my reasons for staying off it are precisely the opposite of being the psychopathic axe-murderer that the article made me and fellow non-Facebook users out to be! It's very sad that mika has pointed towards his fan base as a culprit of cyberbullying. Call me naive, but I have never experienced or seen cyberbullying take place on the MFC, despite being involved in some of those 'heated discussions' people are mentioning. I class these discussions as debates rather than bullying, and find it important not to get too emotionally involved in the arguments. Then again, the line between fierce debate and upsetting people can so easily become blurred online. So everybody, just be careful! Cyberbullying is a very nasty thing ,so don't let Mika or anyone else think that the MFC are involved in it. If you are in any doubt that a post might cause offence, it's probably best to err on the side of caution and not post it at all.
  8. The problem is that you sometimes have to do reactants-products! I think if you're asked enthalpy of combustion you do reactants-products and you do products-reactants for enthalpy of formation. I hope that's the right way round! The other problem for me is when they ask you to calculate one of the values in the triangle! Glad I'm not the only one who finds it confusing! Thanks for your help.
  9. Hi Astor, I'm doing AQA. What about you? Thanks so much for your thorough answer Dermoment, it is the kind of thing I'm stuck on. I'll look again in the morning because it's making me freak out now. I actually find organic chemistry much easier than Hess' cycle chemistry, but that might be because I have a different teacher for it.
  10. When doing enthalpy calculations with given enthalpies of combustion or formation, how do you work out whether to take products from reactants or reactants from products? My teacher really confused me about this!
  11. Awesome performances! T4P. Anybody else think that Max's voice sounds a bit higher than expected here and in the Hialeah recording? It doesn't even sound like falsetto!
  12. Wow! This is an unexpected development! :wink2:Is the single going to be released worldwide or is it just a jingle for a Spanish beer advert? I'm a bit confused.
  13. Welcome! Have fun being a mika fan. It was love at first listen for me too!
  14. Do you need ideas for fundraising to be class rep, or do you need a list of things you will do if you're elected?
  15. Wow! Didn't realise that. And technically I was criticising the song arrangement not the actual video!
  16. Although the video is cool, this version of the song sounds ridiculously autotuned and yucky. I'm sure I could sing as well as Ariana Grande if my voice was disguised by that much autotune. It stops me from enjoying the visual effects.
  17. I actually see where Mika is coming from. As an atheist, when I go into church, I don't actually believe God is present, but there is a certain calming beauty about being in a place of worship. I also think regardless of religious beliefs, humans like rituals, Mika included. The music also probably draws him to the church too, despite not believing in their handling of 'issues' and theistic beliefs. Although this isn't the place to discuss my entire reasons for being atheist (or anybody else's spiritual beliefs), I think it's important that we are allowed to express our opinions on what has been said in the interview-it's really quite interesting!
  18. This is the first really good version I've heard of this song. Anybody else hear 'nappy' as opposed to 'happy' at 3 minutes?!
  19. Is he talking about himself as a 'she' or am I just misinterpreting the lyrics? It's hard to tell if I like the song or not. To me, maybe because I don't speak French, the lyrics and melody seem a bit forced together. Similar to how I felt about ' L'amour dans les mauvais temps'. Anybody think the same? So pleased everyone seems to be enjoying MIKA's acoustic concerts (if a little jealous!).
  20. I googled it and Hialeah is a town in Florida. You guys probably already know that though. I prefer the Arabic theory- it's more imaginative!
