Tomorrow it will be to somebody else, but tonight it was mine ! I : So,for those who don’t know Mika, when you were in France you listened to Gainsbourg or what ? then you were in England, you listened to sth else, it’s a mixture of what ? of everything ? Is it a big milkshake ? (sounds stupid in French too !) M : I was born in Beirut in 1983 then because of the war we moved. One year later we came to Paris and stayed here for 8/9 years. Then my father got stuck in the golf war, because he was on a business trip. There he was stuck in the embassy in Kuwait for 8 months. When he came back we started all over, we had lost everything actually. I twas quite hard. And then when he came back, we had a new start in London and…. (it is cut in a strange way sometimes) M : when we lived in Paris, we listened to everything. In my childhood we listened to Gainsbourg and all the women, Jane Birkin , France Gall, all those great poupées (=doll don’t know how to translate that), that I adore. But we also listened to Fayrouz, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Nina Simone, Rat Pack a whole mixture, really. Not much rock. I had to discover that by myself. I was lucky, I started singing seriously when I was 11 and I was thrown out of the French lycée in London and then I had nothing to do for almost 8 months, because I couldn’t enter another school, because I had a lot of trouble, I’m dyslexic and I couldn’t read nor write in French or in English. So I had to start all over again and I started studying with a Russian teacher who was called Alla Ardokov (sp ?) and 3 months later I got my first job. It was in the chorus of an opera at the Royal Opera House in London in an opera that was called "Die Frau ohne Schatten". The woman without an… a shadow wow…. And then I wrote my own songs, but waiting for that I did every kind of job and with very complicated music, contemporary in Germany or in "Warsaw" how do you say that ? I : warsaw (in French) M : Warsaw and I made gingles for a chewing gum company, for British Aiways I : what was the gingle like ? M : hein ? (he’s so funny lol) I : what was it like ? M : (makes a mocking face) I’m so surprised that you’re asking me this ! Everybody asks me that ! M : I was at home one night and I had to take a plane the next day to LA and I hate flying it’s horrible ! I couldn’t sleep, i twas 2 :30 am and I saw a documentary on TV in England about "obesity" I : obesity (in French) M : obesity in the US. The documentary was quite negative, it was quite horrible actually, but there was a moment where the journalist went to a nightclub, the Butterfly Lounge and it was the first nightclub in the world which was specifically for big women, ehm, then I saw all those big women having the time of their life and with the men who loved them and all the skinny women not being let in. I saw that and said to myself god, I have to write a song for those women, for that club actually. And I wrote it in 15 minutes at 2 :30 am. And my mum is quite tall (is getting confused with tall and big) does one say tall ? not tall from the height. I : big M : big. My mum is quite big, when I was little I was quite big. And there are big people in my family. For me it was personal. I : last question… M : do you feel comfortable ? I : I’m fine M : you’re very small you should eat more ! I : I’m 1,90m 75 kg M : 1,90m and 75kg ? you have a problem my friend ! And it is me who is talking ! (shows his body) I : how much do you weigh ? 30 kg ? M : yeah sure 30 kg, no I gained a little weight. Now I weigh 80, no not 80, 73. but it’s not my fault ! I eat ! I eat all the time (makes signs with his fingers) I : when does the next album come out ? M : the next album next year why not ? I : are you writing at the moment ? M : yeah I : you still write all of your songs ? M : of course. I love to collaborate, does one say that ?, with other people, but, well there are many things I want to do between the first and the second album, but... Does anyone knows 73kg is in lbs? Actually, my mom and I think so, because he looks better in real life! Before his concert, she was like, "Prepare to meet a toothpick!" Me: "You're mean!" Mom (after the concert): You know what? He's really skinny but he doesn't look like he's sick. I think he looks worse in front of the camera... He definitely looks better in real life. (Love Today, I mean) And I was like... choking on my cereal. And I was like "MOM, COME HERE!" and she was getting a shower. So she comes running out and she's like "WHATS WRONG?!" and I said "Look! It's Mika!" Then she stood there, with a towel around her, watching for a second. And she goes "You know, he seems like a really nice guy.
