Da quando è stato giudice di «X Factor» nel 2013, Mika ha stretto un legame fortissimo con l’Italia: ha imparato straordinariamente bene la lingua, ha comprato casa in Toscana e ha mantenuto un rapporto privilegiato con i suoi fan che quest’anno si traduce in ben 12 concerti nel nostro paese. La tappa milanese, martedì 3 dicembre al Forum, porta in città il suo «Revelation tour», uno spettacolo che mette in luce tutta la sua anima poliedrica di showman, pieno di colori e di sorprese, aperto da Wrongonyou, interessante cantautore italiano. Il concerto segue l’uscita del suo nuovo album «My name is Michael Holbrook», un lavoro in cui il 36enne libanese, naturalizzato britannico, è ripartito dal suo nome per intero per mettersi a nudo e parlare delle sue «turbolenze personali», ha raccontato. Un lavoro catartico, arrivato «nel momento più felice e più triste della mia vita» che l’ha aiutato a crescere e capire meglio se stesso, riappacificandosi con tante dinamiche del suo passato. Anche nel disco non mancano i richiami all’Italia, con il brano «Sanremo», dedicato non al festival della canzone italiana, bensì ai suoi ricordi delle prime vacanze nel nostro Paese insieme alla famiglia, e poi con l’uscita di «Domani», traduzione in italiano del suo brano «Tomorrow». Dal vivo nello Stivale, racconta, «ho sempre un rapporto molto diretto con il pubblico, negli intermezzi parlo in italiano e faccio brani che non eseguo altrove». Per questo tour promette una scenografia immaginifica, vera e propria «estrazione del mio mondo», si cimenterà con un «momento tutto a cappella per la prima volta in un palasport» e suonerà un «pianoforte magico» in grado di illuminarsi. La scaletta pesca in tutta la discografia fra momenti di energia esplosiva, altri più riflessivi e un gran finale con l’immancabile «Grace Kelly», brano che l’ha lanciato nel 2007.

Mia madre è libanese, mio padre americano. In me convivono l'educazione anglosassone, ricevuta a scuola, e il temperamento libanese, molto più vicino a quello dell'Europa continentale.
La mia identità, un mix di culture, me la sono costruita come tutti i figli degli immigrati: attraverso il mio lavoro, in quel senso di comunità e appartenenza che si è creato fin dal principio durante i miei concerti in Europa. Mi sono sempre sentito europeo senza avere il passaporto europeo.

 

L'IDEA
Essere europeo non è una condizione naturale: è un'idea. È un concetto di universalità. È la fiducia nel fatto che culture diverse possano connettersi, prosperare, progredire insieme a livello culturale, sociale ed economico. È una cosa in cui credo veramente. Ma in questo momento mi sento a disagio. La mia carriera è fiorita in Europa, ma la mia lingua è l'inglese, il mio stile molto anglosassone, e prima di avere casa negli Stati Uniti l'ho avuta in Gran Bretagna. Sento che l'Europa sta attraversando un momento di grande crisi, e ora più che mai penso che sia indispensabile difendere i veri principi che la rappresentano e ricordarli alle persone. Ho l'impressione che abbiamo dimenticato perché l'Europa esista. E questa ignoranza, questa diffidenza che cresce e si diffonde ci rende vittime perfette per qualsiasi manipolazione politica. Le nazioni si dividono, crescono i conflitti. È una soglia pericolosissima. Se potessi votare a dicembre sulla Brexit, voterei naturalmente per rimanere in Europa. Rischiamo un taglio netto, una mutilazione le cui conseguenze peseranno anche sulla Gran Bretagna. Le persone che soffriranno di più per un'eventuale uscita dall'Europa saranno quelle che hanno bisogno più di tutti del supporto dell'Europa. Chi contribuirà alle spese di una piccola palestra in un villaggio della provincia gallese? Chi foraggerà il centro per il supporto all'adolescenza di una città come Doncaster? Sono due esempi di attività finanziate dall'Unione Europea.

 

LA SCORCIATOIA
Tante iniziative saranno a rischio chiusura. È un pensiero che mi deprime. I politici stanno usando i referendum come se fossero un'arma o una scorciatoia per il potere, e non c'è niente di più sbagliato. Dovrebbero fare moltissima attenzione a servirsi di quello strumento, soprattutto se lo fanno guidati dal proprio ego e dal desiderio di primeggiare: non c'è niente di più pericoloso di un popolo che si accorga di essere stato manipolato. Non dico che il referendum non sia uno strumento democratico, ma dobbiamo sempre considerare il contesto nel quale quel referendum è stato lanciato. I politici hanno agito onestamente? O hanno cavalcato motivazioni e sentimenti diversi dal tema per cui si votava? Ci sono state influenze di altri Paesi? Qual è il grado di istruzione delle persone che hanno votato? A volte mi sembra di vivere in un episodio di House of Cards.

 

IL CAVALLO DI TROIA
Eppure mi rifiuto di considerare la Brexit come un virus e la Gran Bretagna come la grande colpevole della crisi europea. La Brexit non è la causa della crisi: se la Gran Bretagna rimanesse in Europa, la crisi non cesserebbe di esistere. E se la Gran Bretagna dovesse staccarsi, l'Europa dovrebbe continuare a fare i conti con la crisi e cercare di sopravvivere. Bisogna considerare che Il Regno Unito è sempre stato scettico verso l'euro e l'Unione Europea, non è una novità. Ma non dimentichiamoci che fu Charles De Gaulle a rifiutare più volte l'ingresso della Gran Bretagna nella CEE, ritenendola un Paese dall'anima commerciale con interessi lontani da quelli delle altre nazioni. Temeva che la Gran Bretagna potesse diventare il cavallo di Troia degli Stati Uniti in Europa: oggi sappiamo che De Gaulle non aveva ragione. Ma la diffidenza tra le parti c'è sempre stata. E non fatico a comprendere le ragioni di chi si senta respinto dalla fredda burocrazia di Bruxelles. Eppure, e lo dico da osservatore perché certo non sono un politico, non penso che in questo momento sia salutare polarizzare, né generalizzare. Quello di cui dobbiamo veramente occuparci è il miglioramento del senso di coesione all'interno dell'Europa. Senz'altro in Gran Bretagna il referendum della Brexit è stato gestito veramente male dal nostro ex primo ministro, David Cameron, ma anche l'opposizione è stata pessima. Ora non abbiamo bisogno di un governo totalmente conservatore o totalmente di sinistra: ci servirebbe qualcuno che ragioni sulle sfide che vivremo in Europa nei prossimi dieci o vent'anni, in un momento in cui il mondo cambia a velocità spaventosa. Penso alla questione ambientale, un problema che cresce e cambia la geografia anche politica del mondo, ridistribuendo poteri e ricchezze. La Cina ha cominciato quindici anni fa a occuparsi dell'Africa e delle sue risorse, noi siamo indietro.

 

I TEMI
Ci serve qualcuno che capisca l'urgenza dei più grandi temi contemporanei. I giovani al voto ci chiedono un ricambio generazionale, perché non si identificano con la leadership attuale. Ma allo stesso tempo sanno che la macchina politica laburista non è in gran forma. Hanno paura, e credo che il risultato finale del voto ci sorprenderà. Viviamo un incredibile momento di suspance, con un'unica certezza: la politica divisionista basata sull'odio è una perdita di tempo. Non solo non è in linea con il ventunesimo secolo, ma è la ricetta per assicurarsi un futuro disastroso.

The people who will suffer the most from a possible exit from Europe will be the ones who most need the support of Europe. Who will contribute to the costs of a small gym in a village in the Welsh province? Who will forage the center to support the adolescence of a city like Doncaster? THE SHORTCUT
Many initiatives will be at risk of closure. It is a thought that depresses me. Politicians are using referendums as if they were a weapon or a shortcut to power, and there's nothing more wrong. Now we do not need a totally conservative or totally leftist government: we would need someone who would argue about the challenges we will experience in Europe over the next ten or twenty years, at a time when the world is changing at a frightening rate. I am thinking of the environmental issue, a problem that is growing and changing the geography, even political, of the world, redistributing powers and wealth. China began fifteen years ago to deal with Africa and its resources, we are behind.

 

THE THEMES
We need someone who understands the urgency of the greatest contemporary issues. The young people to vote ask us for a generational change, because they do not identify with the current leadership. But at the same time they know that the Labor political machine is not in great shape. They are afraid, and I believe that the final result of the vote will surprise us. We live an incredible moment of suspense, with only one certainty: hate-based divisionist politics is a waste of time. Not only is it not in line with the twenty-first century, but it is the recipe for ensuring a disastrous future.

Accoglienza da stadio per Mika a 20 Anni che Siamo Italiani dopo una straordinaria esibizione live al pianoforte. “Cosa ho fatto venti anni fa? Avevo sedici anni, ballavo, uscivo ogni sera, non avevo un soldo in tasca ma avevo capito come uscire tutte le sere senza spendere un solo soldo. Io ho cantato la musica classica da quando avevo otto anni, poi la voce è calata ed ero senza lavoro. Prima di decidere di fare musica per sempre io mi sono divertito veramente tanto. La mia adolescenza è arrivata un po’ più tardi diciamo”. Il pubblico applaude Mika, la Incontrada lo ringrazia per la sua performance e ribadisce: “Perché è vero che c’è un momento della vita in cui ci si deve divertire e tu lo hai fatto”. Anche Mika fra i grandi ospiti di questa sera di “20 anni che siamo italiani”. Il cantante anglo-libanese è ormai un volto noto della televisione italiana, lanciato di fatto da X Factor nelle vesti di giudice, e poi visto più volte in numerose trasmissioni tv fra cui “Questa sera a casa di Mika”, show tutto suo trasmesso sulla Rai. E da qualche giorno a questa parte il 36enne cantante nato a Beirut è divenuto anche giornalista, in quanto ha iniziato una collaborazione con il quotidiano romano “Il Messaggero”. Il suo primo articolo è stato pubblicato proprio questa settimana, ed ha avuto come cuore della discussione l’Unione Europea e gli ostacoli della Brexit: “La mia identità – si legge in un passaggio di quanto scritto da Michael Holbrook Penniman jr – un mix di culture, me la sono costruita come tutti i figli immigrati: attraverso il mio lavoro, in quel senso di comunità e appartenenza che si è creato fin dal principio durante i miei concerti in Europa”

 

MIKA: “ABBIAMO DIMENTICATO PER L’EUROPA ESISTE”

Mika ha poi svelato di sentirsi a disagio in questo momento storico, sottolineando come a suo modo di vedere l’Europa stia attraverso una crisi senza precedenti: “Ho l’impressione che abbiamo dimenticato perché l’Europa esista. Dodici appuntamenti dal vivo nelle principali città del Belpaese, per ultimo lo show avvenuto a Roma nella giornata di mercoledì. “Sono andato alla ricerca di chi avrei potuto essere, se non fossi stato Mika – ha confessato il cantante in una recente intervista – anche il titolo del tour si collega al mio percorso di ricerca identitaria. Sto preparando uno spettacolo ricco di sorprese. Certi artisti si cimentano con un alter ego artistico. Io ho fatto il contrario, sono andato a scoprire l’uomo dietro l’artista”. Thanks for posting, it's very interesting to read his detailled thoughts about Brexit and the general current political situation in Europe. Absolutely agree with what he writes.

 

Edit: Also that video interview seems to be very interesting, much more than the usual promo stuff. I watched about 10 minutes of it, now I need a pause because it's frustrating how little I understand if he doesn't just tell the usual things he says in every interview. 🙈 I'd love to get subtitles for that one by the @Subtitling Team !  He talks about his name, about artists and the music industry today (I think he said his album was released as a cassette in Indonesia?), about performing live and Social Media, in the bigger sense of contact with the public. And something about a sixpack (muscles) and Instagram - I have an idea of what he says, he obviously wants to have a sixpack...  but I might get it wrong, maybe someone who speaks Italian can translate, it's quite funny.

Mika a sorpresa si racconta con un videomessaggio a www.steradiodj.it, una web radio locale creata qualche anno fa da Stefano Pietta, un ragazzo con disabilità di Manerbio.

«Ciao Stefano sono Mika, mi dispiace non essere con te in studio, però volevo lasciati un piccolo messaggio per te e per i tuoi radioascoltatori: spero ti piaccia "Ice Cream". Spero ci sarà un’altra opportunità di conoscerci. Nel frattempo buona estate e buon ascolto di "Ice Cream"».

 

Il videomessaggio dura 43 secondi, ma è un concentrato di simpatia e gentilezza. Il mittente è niente meno che il famoso cantautore libanese naturalizzato britannico; destinatario invece è Stefano, un manerbiese che, per passione verso la musica, ma anche per far conoscere la propria disabilità e crearsi nuove amicizie, ha deciso di aprire un canale di comunicazione online: una web radio che sta riscuotendo un enorme successo.

«Questa è una di quelle cose che ti lasciano a bocca aperta - racconta il 35enne -. Ho aperto la mail e mi sono trovato la meravigliosa sorpresa . A novembre non mancherò al suo concerto a Montichiari, magari riusciremo a conoscerci e parlarci dal vivo». Stefano ha già postato il messaggio sulla propria pagina Facebook e il video sta facendo il pieno di like.

Edit: Also that video interview seems to be very interesting, much more than the usual promo stuff. I watched about 10 minutes of it, now I need a pause because it's frustrating how little I understand if he doesn't just tell the usual things he says in every interview. 🙈 I'd love to get subtitles for that one by the @Subtitling Team !  He talks about his name, about artists and the music industry today (I think he said his album was released as a cassette in Indonesia?), about performing live and Social Media, in the bigger sense of contact with the public. And something about a sixpack (muscles) and Instagram - I have an idea of what he says, he obviously wants to have a sixpack...  but I might get it wrong, maybe someone who speaks Italian can translate, it's quite funny.

Il segreto di Mika, l’uomo oltre l’artista

 

Appuntamento al PalaGeorge di Montichiari sabato per il concerto di Mika (i supporter del concerto iniziano alle 20.30, lo show di Mika un’ora dopo; i biglietti costano da 46 a 69 euro). L’artista di origini libanesi naturalizzato britannico fa tappa nella provincia bresciana per uno dei concerti del Revelation tour in occasione dell’uscita nel nuovo album «My name is Michael Holbrook», scritto con Dan Black e prodotto da Mark Crew e Dan Priddy con Dan Black. Ad accompagnarlo sul palco un totale di quattro musicisti: Timothy Van Der Kuil alla chitarra, Max Taylor al basso, Wouter Van Tornnhout alla batteria e Mitchell Yoshida al piano. Il tutto prodotto da Claudio Trotta per Barley Arts. Un totale di 12 appuntamenti iniziati il 24 novembre al Pala Alpitour di Torino e che si chiuderanno l’8 febbraio a Reggio Calabria per un totale di circa 75mila spettatori raggiunti.

 

«Queste nuove canzoni hanno colori forti ed un messaggio intimo — ha dichiarato lo stesso Mika —. Parlano di crescere, mantenendo i miei colori. Mi sono concentrato sull’idea di diventare un adulto senza perdere umanità, il senso dei colori e dell’eccentricità». Un album, My name is Michael Holbrook, strettamente anagrafico come si può intuire dalla dichiarazione del nome di battesimo che titola il lavoro. A dodici anni dal successo di Life in cartoon motion, che conteneva la hit Grace Kelly, Mika ha fatto esplodere la sua carriera artistica passando agilmente dal mondo dei palchi a quello delle telecamere, presentandosi come mattatore di show televisivi quali Stasera CasaMika, X Factor (in Italia) e The Voice (in Francia). Decisamente eclettico quanto poliglotta, Mika decide di mettere in primo piano le proprie esperienze, svelando non solo momenti di vita famigliare, ma anche una serie di grandi e piccoli episodi che l’hanno accompagnato in questi anni. «Sono andato alla ricerca di chi avrei potuto essere — prosegue il cantante —. Certi artisti si cimentano con un alter ego artistico, dal grandioso David Bowie con Ziggy Stardust, fino a Beyoncé con Sasha Fierce. Io ho fatto il contrario, sono andato a scoprire l’uomo dietro l’artista».

 

Un viaggio a ritroso che Mika ha percorso portando in primo piano il ruolo dei propri famigliari dalla sorella Yasmine, con la quale ha progettato la scenografia degli spettacoli, fino alle gigantografie dei propri genitori da giovani. Ed è proprio l’allestimento del palco a costituire uno degli aspetti più d’impatto per il live; un tableau sgargiante e ricco di riferimenti pop all’immaginario dell’artista come la sagoma di un King Kong alto 10 metri, astri e pianeti rotanti proiettati in modo caleidoscopico durante il concerto. Immagini che solleticano la fantasia e invitano a riappropriarsi della facoltà di sognare e di abbandonarsi alle emozioni lasciando alla mente la libertà di andare in orbita. «È un invito a vivere due ore di emozioni — ha spiegato Mika prima del live —. In un momento in cui sembra che tutto sia a disposizione, dalle serie tv a ripetizione al sesso in 5 minuti di Tinder, non siamo mai stati così soli».

Com’è il tuo rapporto con i fan?

Un rapporto molto forte. Ci sono alcuni che riconosco perché mi seguono da dieci anni, ma sono sempre sorpreso dalle persone che vengono perché c’è davvero di tutto. Tutte le età, uomini, donne, ragazzi, giovani, meno, giovani. Quello che faccio è nato da una stanza, quindi è surreale fare questo salto con il materiale nato dall’intimità e che poi va in giro grazie ad un firmacopie in cui ci sono persone che non conosco, piene di passione ed energia. È sempre surreale.

 

E ci sarà anche un tour di ben 12 date…

Ci sono 12 date in Italia con uno show che sarà quello più intimo e spettacolare mai fatto. Ci sarà un’intensità ben rappresentata dall’energia e dalla grinta che ho in questo momento per il mio lavoro, per quello che sto facendo. Sarà un one man show e cambierà da un giorno all’altro.

 

Quali canzoni troviamo in scaletta?

Per il tour italiano c’è una scaletta diversa da quella americana, francese e inglese. È piena di canzoni di questo disco che si mischiano tanto bene con le mie grandi hit. Ci sarà una band in parte rivoluzionata con il chitarrista di Adele, un gruppo fortissimo. C’è un equilibrio che mi fa davvero piacere.

 

Con questo album hai ritrovato te stesso, hai ritrovato Michael…

Ho ritrovato me stesso e soprattutto l’energia. Sto scrivendo solo per me, l’emozione che esce non va giudicata, i colori non vanno giudicati. La melodia può esistere a servizio dell’emozione, ma volevo questo album pieno di colori forti. Ho ritrovato questa energia che si sente anche sul palco.

 

Nella copertina del disco infatti c’è la tua foto in bianco e nero poi un’esplosione di colori…

La verità è che in tutti i miei album non mi sono mai presentato con una foto a colori. Mi sembra giusto così perché il colore viene dalla musica e dalle canzoni. Da lì che la vita vissuta in bianco e nero diventa colorata, diventa più bella anche nella tristezza o nella rabbia. Per questo scrivo e rappresenta al meglio il mio atteggiamento, il mio modo di essere.

 

Vedremo questo tour anche in tv?

Per ora questo tour rimane una cosa intensa, ma effimera. Ho deciso di non riprendere i concerti perché c’è un linguaggio diverso. Se volete vedere questo mondo sospeso e spettacolare dovete vederlo di persona.
