Sono passati quattro anni dall’ultimo disco e ce ne sono voluti due per realizzare My name is Michael Holbrook, in uscita il 4 ottobre e al centro di un tour mondiale che interessa anche l’Italia, da Torino a Reggio Calabria, con 12 date fino a febbraio 2020. Scritto tra Miami, Londra e la campagna toscana, è un percorso nel profondo, tra memorie d’infanzia e ricerca della propria identità, che il cantante americano-libanese racconta con insperata generosità. Portatore sano di un carisma che a tratti confonde, si concede con naturalezza. E, dalla sponda opposta di un divano pressoché infinito, riduce la distanza con l’empatia. Quest’album mi è servito per capire chi sono. E per fare pace con alcune vicende accadute nella mia vita. Quali? In tre anni ho perso cinque persone a me vicine. Ma invece di nascondere il dolore, ho utilizzato la musica come una sorta di medicina. Così il nuovo disco è il riflesso di quello che sta succedendo nella mia sfera personale. Cosa c’è dentro? È pieno di contrasti, di paradox: è molto melodico ma i testi fanno anche piangere. È una sorta di estasi, una catarsi. Come ballare con le lacrime negli occhi. Quale canzone ti rappresenta di più? Tiny Love Reprise, il pezzo che chiude l’album. Comincia con una dichiarazione civile, come se stessi leggendo la mia carta d’identità: «Il mio nome è Michael Holbrook. Sono nato nel 1983». E poi ci sono mia madre e mia sorella che cantano: ho deciso di dare voce direttamente a loro, perché avessero l’ultima parola. Nel disco ho raccontato vicende molto dolorose che le riguardano. Come nel brano Paloma, dedicato a tua sorella… Sì, lì ho descritto la notte del 2010 in cui l’ho soccorsa in strada dopo la caduta dal terzo piano del suo appartamento londinese. Un evento che mi ha cambiato: non ho mai voluto affrontarlo prima, neanche nelle interviste. Ma quando ho cominciato a lavorare su questo progetto mi è sembrato naturale tirarlo fuori. Senza nessun blocco, mi sono ritrovato a raccontare un avvenimento che avevo nascosto per tanti anni. Serviva un po’ di tempo, forse… In realtà non c’è mai un momento buono per parlare di un fatto così violento. Specialmente quando è successo a una persona della tua famiglia. Ma ho utilizzato la scrittura, la musica, per ricontestualizzare una cosa orribile e dargli un senso. In che modo? Nel testo ho scritto: «Ti ho trovata nel buio, mentre combattevi per la tua vita, ma anche lì dentro c’era bellezza». Sembra una cosa assurda ma è vera, anche in una situazione così traumatica. Cos’è per te la bellezza? Non è facile riconoscerla. Si può scorgere nello spazio tra una cosa e l’altra, tra una persona e l’altra. È sempre nel vuoto. La cosa più bella per me, ora, è l’idea che la creatività sia capace di regalarmi la libertà. Perché anche quando fai un lavoro che ti piace, a prescindere dal successo o dal denaro, puoi finire in una gabbia. Ma la creatività ti consente di… to melt, fonderla. E l’amore invece? Può essere la peggiore o migliore esperienza della vita. È troppo complicato per essere descritto in un film hollywoodiano, ma esiste nelle pellicole di Pasolini, Fellini, Truffaut. Hai scritto una canzone su Sanremo. C’entra il Festival? In realtà è un brano sulla frustrazione e sul desiderio. Quando ero giovane andavamo in vacanza da una zia in Costa Azzurra. Da lì mia mamma ci caricava sulla sua Toyota e ci portava in gita a Sanremo, che era un posto più accogliente per una famiglia bohémienne come la nostra: tre sorelle, un fratello, una nonna, due zie, due amiche un po’ anziane sempre ubriache e un coniglio. In Francia eravamo visti come la peste, ma l’Italia ci faceva sentire i benvenuti. Un’oasi di serenità? Ricordo che tutti i ragazzi e le ragazze di 14 anni mi sembravano belli, abbronzati, cool e pieni di coraggio. Io stavo lì di fronte a loro, sudato, ciccione, con le gambe strette l’una contro l’altra. Mangiavo un gelato e mi chiedevo chi avesse creato questi essere umani e perché io non ero come loro. Ora ti senti sensuale? No, ma mi piace utilizzare la sensualità in quello che faccio. Viviamo in un’epoca in cui le immagini sono iper sessualizzate, ma non esiste un vero discorso sul tema, soprattutto nel pop. Si girano video in cui viene mostrato tutto, ma nei testi non si dice nulla. Negli anni ’80 c’era una sensualità credibile, ma anche il pop italiano degli anni ’60 ne era pieno. Ora è tutto molto più censurato. Hai vissuto in Francia, Gran Bretagna, Stati Uniti, Italia. Dove ti senti a casa? Da nessuna parte. Ma ho la capacità di integrarmi molto velocemente ovunque. Se mi metti su una collina in Toscana in quattro settimane sono capace di conoscere ogni persona che abita nei dintorni. Perché mi piace andare su un palco a cantare di fronte a 80mila persone ma anche litigare per il prezzo dei pomodori. Lo sei dappertutto, quindi… Esatto. E poi mi sento a casa in tutti i posti in cui posso creare. Quali città italiane ti sono rimaste nel cuore? Così, l’incoscienza di vivere una passione con l’emozione delle prime volte si è ben presto scontrata con un meccanismo di marketing più grande di lui.
