Mika wil opnieuw band opbouwen met fans

 

 

We hebben een poosje weinig vernomen van Mika, maar de Brit-Lebanese zanger hoopt zijn Nederlandse fans terug te winnen na een lange afwezigheid. „Ik vind dat ik opnieuw een band moet opbouwen met Nederland."

 

Het is alweer elf jaar geleden dat Mika zijn laatste hit scoorde met het nummer Rain. De zanger, die eigenlijk Michael Holbrook heet, maakte een grootste entree in de muziekwereld toen hij in 2007 zijn debuutalbum Life In Cartoon Motion uitbracht, dat een platina status behaalde en vier top 10-noteringen voortbracht: Grace Kelly, Big Girl (You Are Beautiful), Happy Ending en de nummer 1-hit Relax, Take It Easy.

Hoewel het hitsaldo na zijn de opvolger The Boy Who Knew Too Much niet verder opliep, heeft Mika zeker niet stilgezeten. Onlangs verscheen zijn vijfde langspeler, My Name Is Michael Holbrook. Ze doen het al hun hele leven.” Mika’s honden heten Melachi en Amyra. „Dat klinkt misschien alsof het hele chique namen zijn, maar dat is niet het geval. Het heeft iets romantisch, maar eigenlijk betekent het ‘koningin’ en ‘prinses’ in het Arabisch. Als ik je zou vertellen dat mijn honden Queen en Princess zouden heten, zou je dat de meest ordinaire namen ooit vinden.”

 

Melachi en Amyra zijn Mika’s enige reisgenoten. „Ik wilde honden hebben die ik overal mee naartoe kon nemen in dit gekke leven dat ik leid.” Hij vertelt dat de golden retrievers gek zijn op autoritjes en op Instagram deelt hij vaak foto’s en stories van de beestjes. „Vaak wou ik dat ik hun leventje had”, lacht Mika. „Ze kunnen lekker overal naartoe, verblijven in mooie hotels en ze hoeven er helemaal niks voor te doen.” Hij hoopt met de drie concerten die hij in Utrecht geeft weer in de gratie te komen bij het Nederlandse publiek. „Voorheen heb ik met veel plezier opgetreden in Nederland en veel van de mensen met wie ik samenwerk komen er vandaan, maar ik ben er al vijf jaar niet geweest. In plaats van één avond een grote show te geven, met als doel om zoveel mogelijk kaartjes te verkopen, geef ik nu drie kleinere optredens. Dat vind ik belangrijk en noodzakelijk om weer een connectie te maken met mijn fans. Kleine shows kunnen bovendien een grote impact hebben, zeker als ze heel goed zijn.”

Frankrijk en Italië

De reden dat we Mika uit het oog verloren zijn, komt omdat hij veel tijd in Frankrijk en Italië doorbracht, waar hij te zien was in populaire televisieprogramma’s. Sommige daarvan zijn behoorlijk commercieel, andere absoluut niet. Maar ze hebben één ding gemeen: ze zijn echt en puur, want dat is altijd mijn prioriteit geweest bij het schrijven van muziek. Ik probeer eerlijke, intieme en kleurrijke albums te maken. Begrijp me niet verkeerd, ik ben ontzettend dankbaar voor het commerciële succes dat ik had aan het begin van mijn carrière. "Being Mika is tiring"

With his theatrical, catchy songs, he managed to conquer the world in a short time. But the success lasted only a year and a half and then it remained silent for a long time around Mika. But there is good news! The cartoonish curly ball will be on show in Utrecht for three evenings next week.

His debut album Live in cartoon motion from 2007 sold eight million copies worldwide and included hits such as Grace Kelly, Big girl (you are beautiful) and Relax, take it easy. The Lebanese-British singer is currently working on a European tour, with which he will be visiting the Netherlands for the first time in a long time: on 10, 12 and 13 February he will play in TivoliVredenburg. The 36-year-old songwriter consciously chose a somewhat smaller room. "I have not been here for a long time," he says. "I love this country and I love to perform there. Although it is much easier for us to just give one show in a large room, it is more important that I am able to build a personal bond with my fans here and that chance is greater in a more intimate setting. ”

Why did you let us wait so long?

"No idea, probably because I was too busy with other shows. That is also why it is important to focus more on my "old market". Moreover, many graphic people with whom I collaborate come from the Netherlands. People who work on my costumes, designers of my sets. So it's a bit strange that I haven't been here for so long, since I work a lot with Dutchies on a creative level. ”

"Haha, maybe! At the moment I live nowhere. Yes, in a suitcase and in a car. I made my most recent album (My name is Michael Holbrook from 2019, RK) partly in Miami, where I have a house with a built-in studio, and in my studio in Italy. I have since decided for myself that I never want to work in a commercial studio again. Unless you have to include a large package, it has zero added value to be there. That era is over. All you need to record these days is a computer and a microphone. ”

You had great success in the Netherlands between 2007 and 2009, but then the big hits were over. What did that do to you?

"Fair? I didn't care at all. Of course it is nice to be successful, but it is far from important to me. I make songwriter albums and all my records represent who I am and are a reflection of my life. All songs are written on the piano, in an intimate setting. Some of them are quite commercial, others absolutely not. But they have one thing in common: they are real and pure, because that has always been my priority when writing music. I try to make honest, intimate and colorful albums. Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful for the commercial success I had at the start of my career. It gave me a lot of freedom and it ensured that I was able to develop myself. I was able to create my own sound and I would never have succeeded without that success. So I think it's important, but actually not. At least I am not obsessed with it. Absolutely not."

Will songs like Lollipop never bore you?

"Take the song Origin of love. I played that for three thousand people last week and I was a bit like: ####, what a great thing this is! It represents so incredibly who I am artistically. Mika the songwriter. The much more commercial Lollipop does not have that. If I play that song live I can add something creative to it, but it is not as important to me as Origin of love or Last party. Those numbers have their own world and language. I am incredibly on tour a lot, also because I secure my artistic world. I am aware that I have no laundry list of radio hits. But precisely because I have so many performances, I managed to survive. At the end of this concert series, in November, I sold hundreds of thousands of tickets. That's insane for someone who doesn't have big hits right now. And I am not an artist from the eighties or nineties who can live on his repertoire. It is sometimes a bit tiring because you sometimes feel like a circus artist. And I can't take an example from someone like Adele, who takes a break for a few years. I don't have that space. "

What can we expect in Utrecht?

"It's a kind of concept show, the songs tell a story that doesn't stop. In this way, none of the songs feels obligatory, but relevant and fresh. But, not only the show is a concept, my entire career feels that way. That's what I want to keep protecting and I now realize that it's ####ing cool. ”

It surprises me that he didn't show up in any radio shows or on television. He had the day of yesterday but he popped up nowhere He's never in the Netherlands so this would've been a great moment to get in contact ahwww

Then it wouldn't have been a day off.  If I was him, I'd have slept all day.  He does get in contact by the gigs he's doing - and who knows, maybe he's talking with some journalists backstage?

Waar zijn ze gebleven? Sterren van toen die uit de schijnwerpers zijn verdwenen. Vandaag: zanger Mika.

 

Grace Kelly, Love Today, Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)... weinig artiesten regen de successen zo aan elkaar als de Brits-Libanese zanger Mika (36) in 2007. Zijn grootste hit in Nederland, Relax (Take It Easy), was dat jaar zelfs de bestverkochte single van een buitenlandse artiest.  Paul de Leeuw  kwam hij hier daarna nog wel op tv, maar hits bleven uit.

 

Stil zat Mika in elk geval niet. Na zijn debuutplaat maakte hij nog vier albums, maar richtte de meertalige zanger zijn pijlen vooral op Frankrijk en Italië. Daar groeide hij uit tot een stadionact én tv-persoonlijkheid, met een coachstoel in de Franse The Voice en een juryrol bij X Factor én een eigen personalityshow in Italië. En het bleef niet bij muziek; de modefanaat ontwierp horloges voor Swatch en pennen voor het merk Pilot.

 

Levensgevaarlijk gewond

 

Privé sloeg in 2010 het noodlot toe. Mika’s jongere zus Paloma rookte een sigaret bij het raam van haar Londense appartement, verloor haar evenwicht, viel vier verdiepingen naar beneden en werd gespietst op een hek. Ze raakte levensgevaarlijk gewond, maar kwam er uiteindelijk bovenop. Mika zingt erover op zijn laatste album, dat afgelopen oktober verscheen

My Name Is Michael Holbrook, verwijzend naar zijn volledige naam, is Mika’s meest open plaat tot nu toe. Er is ruimte voor zijn seksualiteit, waarover na zijn doorbraak vaak werd gespeculeerd. Mika, al jaren samen met filmmaker Andreas Dermanis, kwam in 2012 publiekelijk uit de kast. Sindsdien is hij een uitgesproken lid van de gemeenschap, met een vermelding van Billboard voor een van de beste lhbti-albums van 2019.

 

Niet meer mainstream

 

Al met al is de man van de wereldhits nu een niche-artiest, zoals hij het zelf zegt. Dankzij zijn vroegere succes kan hij buiten de mainstream zijn ‘alternatieve pop’ maken. En zijn niche leeft, bleek onlangs nog. Zijn eerste concert in het Utrechtse TivoliVredenburg was zo snel uitverkocht dat twee data werden bijgeboekt.

In de zaal stond een mix van jong en oud, van allerlei nationaliteiten. De fans vinden elkaar in het samen net even anders zijn. En het vieren daarvan, liefst kleurrijk uitgedost, net als Mika. Met het refrein van We Are Golden als verbindende meezingclimax. ,,We are not what you think we are, we are golden!’’

 

 

Open brief

 

Naar aanleiding van de verwoestende explosie van afgelopen week schreef Mika een open brief aan Libanon en zijn geboortestad Beiroet, die gisteren in meerdere buitenlandse kranten werd gepubliceerd. Hij beschreef de pijn die het land al langer kent, maar benadrukte dat de veerkrachtige bevolking ook deze tegenslag zal overwinnen: ‘Na het duister komt de zon weer op.’

Where have they gone? Stars of the time that have disappeared from the spotlight. Today: singer Mika.

 

Grace Kelly, Love Today, Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) ... few artists rain the successes together as much as the British-Lebanese singer Mika (36) in 2007. His biggest hit in the Netherlands, Relax (Take It Easy), was even the best-selling single by a foreign artist that year. Thanks to fan  Paul de Leeuw , he came here afterwards on TV, but hits were not forthcoming.

 

In any case, Mika did not sit still. After his debut record he made four more albums, but the multilingual singer mainly focused on France and Italy. There he grew into a stadium act and TV personality, with a coach seat in the French The Voice and a jury role at X Factor and his own personality show in Italy. And it didn't stop with music; the fashion fanatic designed watches for Swatch and pens for the Pilot brand.

Dangerously injured

In 2010, tragedy struck privately. Mika’s younger sister Paloma smoked a cigarette by the window of her London apartment, lost her balance, fell four floors and was impaled on a fence. She was critically injured, but eventually recovered. Mika sings about it on his latest album, which was released last October.

My Name Is Michael Holbrook, referring to his full name, is Mika's most open record to date. There is room for his sexuality, which was often speculated about after his breakthrough. Mika, who has been working with filmmaker Andreas Dermanis for years, came out publicly in 2012. He has since been an outspoken member of the community, citing Billboard for one of the best LGBTI albums of 2019.

Not mainstream anymore

All in all, the man of the world hits is now a niche artist, as he puts it himself. His past success has allowed him to create his "alternative pop" outside of the mainstream. And his niche is alive, as recently became apparent. His first concert in TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht was sold out so quickly that two dates were booked.

The room was a mix of young and old, of all nationalities. The fans find each other in being slightly different together. And the celebration of it, preferably colorfully dressed, just like Mika. With the chorus of We Are Golden as a connecting sing-along climax. "We are not what you think we are, we are golden!"

 

Open letter

Following last week's devastating explosion, Mika wrote an open letter to Lebanon and his hometown Beirut, which was published yesterday in several foreign newspapers. He described the pain that the country has known for some time, but emphasized that the resilient population will also overcome this setback: "After dark the sun will rise again."

Mika geeft op zaterdag 19 september zijn I Love Beirut-benefietconcert in Italië naar aanleiding van de ramp in Beiroet zo’n twee weken geleden. Tickets zijn vanaf maandag 24 augustus verkrijgbaar via TicketMaster en de show is live te volgen via YouTube.

De in Libanon geboren zanger Mika schreef eerder in een emotionele brief dat hij diep getroffen is door de omvang van de verwoesting door de explosie in de haven van Beiroet en de impact ervan op de inwoners van de stad.

 

,,Na jaren van burgeroorlog, financiële crisis en politieke onrust komt het nieuws van deze tragische explosie ongelooflijk hard binnen. Hoewel ik ver weg ben, breekt mijn hart als ik denk aan de families die hun huis, hun levensonderhoud en hun dierbaren verloren zijn door deze ramp. Ik wilde iets doen om te helpen”, laat de Grace Kelly-zanger weten.

 

De opbrengst van het concert wordt verdeeld onder het Rode Kruis Libanon en Save the Children Libanon. Daarnaast kunnen mensen ook extra donaties doen via een speciale GoFundMe-campagne. ,,Ik twijfel er niet aan dat de stad zal herstellen en het unieke leven van deze magische stad weer wordt hervat”, denkt Mika. ,,Beiroet is mijn geboorteplaats, maakt deel uit van mij en zal altijd in mijn hart zijn.”
