I just landed into London and am happy to say that not only am I nominated in the category of Outstanding Music Artist at this year’s @GLAAD awards, but I’m also super happy to confirm I’ll be performing in person at the ceremony itself in Los Angeles on April 16th!

GLAAD is the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organisation and the awards honour media for fair, accurate and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues.

This is really important in contemporary society and I’m proud to be part of it! #glaadawards

Mika to Perform, Fortune Feimster to Host GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles

Even with an already star-studded lineup, the 31st GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles are ready to bring even more queer stars to the stage.

 

On Thursday (March 5), GLAAD announced exclusively to Billboard that pop singer Mika, who is nominated for outstanding music artist at the event, will take the stage during the ceremony to deliver a special performance. Joining Mika is comedian Fortune Feimster, who will serve as the evening's host. The Los Angeles ceremony is also boasting appearances from stars including Lil Nas X, Hailee Steinfeld, Olivia Wilde, the cast of Schitt’s Creek, Elvis Duran, Ryan O’Connell, Amandla Stenberg, Shangela, Bob the Drag Queen and Eureka O’Hara.

 

Also at the LA ceremony, pop superstar Taylor Swift is set to receive the Vanguard Award for her activism on behalf of the LGBTQ community, while director, producer and writer Janet Mock will receive the Stephen F. Kolzak Award for her continued work in representing the LGBTQ community onscreen.

Out recording artist and singer-songwriter MIKA rose to fame with the release of his hit single, “Grace Kelly” in 2007.

The single was featured on his debut album, Life In Cartoon Motion, which went straight to #1 in the UK and 11 other countries, going on to sell over seven million copies worldwide.

Since his debut, MIKA has released three other platinum-selling albums, including The Boy Who Knew Too Much, The Origin of Love, and No Place In Heaven. In addition, MIKA has not only won a Brit Award for British Breakthrough Act, but he has also been nominated for Grammys, MTV Europe Music Awards, Capital Radio Awards and World Music Awards.

MIKA’s 2019 album, My Name Is Michael Holbrook, earned him a GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding Music Artist this year.

 

The 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards will take place in New York at the Hilton Midtown on Thursday,

March 19 and in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday, April 16.

 

GLAAD previously announced over 175 nominees in 30 categories for the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards.

Update on next week's 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City

GLAAD, the world's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, announced today that the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York will no longer occur next week following new guidance from the New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo around COVID-19. The 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards are presented by Delta, Gilead, Hyundai, and Ketel One Family-Made Vodka.

 

GLAAD’s Rich Ferraro, Chief Communications Officer and an Executive Producer of the GLAAD Media Awards, issued the following statement:

“Given GLAAD’s long-standing commitment to the safety of our members, sponsors, and guests, the GLAAD Media Awards will no longer take place on March 19th in New York City. The team at GLAAD has been in communication with the City of New York and is following the latest recommendations from Governor Cuomo. We were planning to unveil a historic get-out-the-vote campaign at the event because everything is at stake for LGBTQ Americans this election year, and are hopeful that the program and GLAAD’s ongoing work to fight against anti-LGBTQ discrimination will continue to be supported and funded. Since the event is canceled, our advocacy work will experience a loss of funding and we encourage community members and allies to consider becoming a GLAAD member to ensure this work continues. Join here. 

We are beyond proud to honor Ryan Murphy and Judith Light, two trailblazing beacons of LGBTQ advocacy and inclusion, and we will ensure their game-changing work is rightfully recognized at another time. We are so thankful to our host Lilly Singh, performers Adam Lambert and Ben Platt, and all of the LGBTQ people who were working hard to ensure our stage show would once again send much-needed messages of LGBTQ acceptance around the globe. 

 

We will be in touch with nominees shortly with plans for how award categories scheduled for the New York show will be announced, acknowledging that a GLAAD Media Award nomination or win can raise the bar for LGBTQ representation and serve as a catalyst for media executives to greenlight additional LGBTQ projects. 

We are speaking with public health officials in Los Angeles about next month’s GLAAD Media Awards dinner and stage show.

GLAAD is working to reschedule the event to later in the year. GLAAD previously canceled the GLAAD Media Awards in New York City which were scheduled for March 19. The 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards are presented by Delta, Gilead, Hyundai, and Ketel One Family-Made Vodka.

 

GLAAD’s Rich Ferraro, Chief Communications Officer and an Executive Producer of the GLAAD Media Awards, issued the following statement:

“In accordance with guidelines put in place by Governor Gavin Newsom, the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles are no longer taking place in April and we are working to reschedule the event to the fall.

Since its inception in 1990, the GLAAD Media Awards have grown to the most visible annual LGBTQ awards show in the world, sending powerful messages of acceptance to audiences globally. At the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in 2019, Beyoncé and JAY-Z, Andy Cohen, Madonna, and the casts of Pose and Queer Eye were among award recipients and honorees.

 

GLAAD previously announced over 175 nominees in 30 categories for the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards.

Coronavirus: GLAAD to Lose $2 Million in Wake of Media Awards Cancellations

GLAAD could be looking at a loss of $2 million because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The LGBTQ media watchdog group announced Monday that its upcoming Media Awards Gala in Los Angeles on April 16 has been canceled. The group is hoping to reschedule for the fall, but it’s still unclear if that will be possible.

 

The announcement comes just five days after organization announced the cancellation of the Media Awards in New York on March 19.

“This is a $2 million implication to our bottom line,” GLAAD’s president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis tells Variety. “They are our biggest fundraising events and they help support a lot of our programming.”

 

Taylor Swift was to be honored in Los Angeles along with Janet Mock. In New York, the honorees included Ryan Murphy and Judith Light. More than 1,000 guests were expected in Los Angeles and another 800 in New York.

 

Fortunately, Ellis reports, many of the corporate sponsors — including pharmaceutical giant Gilead Sciences, Hyundai, Bud Light and Ketel One — as well as individual donors have agreed not to pull their financial commitments.

 

“We called them individually and the majority of them without even having to ask offered and said they would turn it into a donation. It is amazing. It is phenomenal,” Ellis said. “Same with our major ticket buyers. These are expensive tickets and we said, ‘Instead of being a ticket buyer, we’d love to turn into one of our major donors.’ Over 90% of them said, ‘Yes, please.’”

 

Korab Zuka, vice president of public affairs at Gilead Sciences, tells Variety, “Our grantees and partners are on the front lines of the world’s toughest public health problems. We are doing everything we can to stand with and support the incredible work GLAAD is doing through these uncertain times. Together, we will weather this crisis and our community will be stronger and more resilient as a result.”

 

“Ketel One Vodka has been a proud supporter of the GLAAD Media Awards for ten consecutive years, standing by them to spread the message of LGBTQ inclusivity,” said Jim Ruane, vice president of Reserve Vodka at Diageo. “We support the decision of GLAAD to postpone or cancel events at this time. We will remain committed to our trusted partners, will follow their guidance on when activities can safely resume and we will continue to stand by the community.”

 

Even so, GLAAD expected to raise about $500,000 during the galas from multiple activations, including the silent and live auctions. There was also still money to be had from last-minute ticket and table buys.

 

“We were thinking of maybe putting the auctions online but a lot of these auctions are trips,” Ellis said. “No one’s head is there right now. It seems bizarre to put up a cruise. You’d be laughed right off the internet.”

 

For now, GLAAD staff is working from home. Its GLAAD Media Institute will continue its work, media-training local activists and advocates, especially during the 2020 election cycle.

 

“There are bad bills popping up everywhere and we can go in anywhere virtually and train the activists and advocates on the ground to talk about it and help fight back on these bills,” Ellis said.

 

Ellis also mentioned that the institute is available to creatives and writers who are working on scripts and projects at home while their current productions are on hold to help them “incorporate LGBTQ storylines as they’re writing away.”

 

GLAAD certainly isn’t the only not-for-profit taking a hit because of fundraiser cancellations.

“They’re grabbing dates in October and later as soon as possible because there aren’t that many nights available,” a leading Hollywood event publicist tells Variety. “There also aren’t that many spaces that are large enough to handle these benefits [in Los Angeles]. It’s like a big game of chess moving everything around.”

 

Charities are also losing some — if not all — of their deposits, especially if postponement means relocating the event to another venue.

In the end, it’s all a big unknown, as there are too many factors still up in the air to make any concrete decisions. “A lot of the fundraisers attract an older crowd so we don’t know if they’ll be keen to attend big events,” the publicist said. “Also, if the stock market takes a big hit, there are going to be donors who may be reluctant to spend as much money on tickets as they used to.”

 

Looking forward, it’s not hard for this publicist to imagine that when events do return, red carpets may not be as elaborate as they once were. “I don’t think it would be forever, but we are thinking about how are we going to make people feel safe and comfortable,” the publicist said. “Maybe there will be less media on the carpets or not as many photographers or even inside the events, maybe it will be a smaller number of guests. How often are we in a ballroom and the tables are so close to each other with as many people crammed around those tables as possible? I don’t think that’s going to fly now.”
