Stars Cover Up To Celebrate BBC Radio 1 Birthday

by Andrew Tijs - August 17 2007

An all-star cover album is being release to celebrate the 40th anniversary of BBC Radio 1.

The album, matter-of-factly dubbed 'Radio 1 Established 1967', features a slew of UK stars (plus our own Kylie Minogue) covering some of the biggest pop hits of the last forty years. The Kaiser Chiefs kick it off with a cover of the first song ever played on the station – 'Flowers In The Rain' by The Move.

Confirming a long-time rumour, Minogue gives Radio 1 her take on Roxy Music's 'Love Is The Drug'. Robbie Williams has a crack 'Lola' by The Kinks. Franz Ferdinand appropriately channel Bowie on his more obscure track 'Sound And Vision'. Trashbag soul diva Amy Winehouse covers Johnny Cash's 'Cupid'.

Pop comes in strange forms, as Natasha Bedingfield cover's Madonna's 'Ray Of Light', Girls Aloud cover indie one hit wonder Wheatus' 'Teenage Dirtbag', street-level electro dub crew Hard-Fi have a go at Britney Spears' 'Toxic' and teen pop-punks McFly bravely attempt 'Town Called Malice' by The Jam.

Other big name stars on the album include the flamboyant Mika, indie rockers Keane and Razorlight, and Scots The View. The album will be released on October 1.

As this seems to be a thread about the album and not only about Mikas 'song' - I'll bump it. :wink2:

2005: The Enemy - Father & Son (Yusuf Islam/Ronan Keating)

2006: Corinne Bailey Rae - Steady, As She Goes (The Raconteurs)

The album contains quite a few nice and personal remakes, like the 'reggae version' of Englishman in New York by Razorlight and the version of Careless Whisper by the Gossip.

There are only two contributions I tend to skip: the one by Mika and Love Fool by Just Jack.

My favourites so far:

- Flowers in the rain (Kaiser Chiefs)

- You're so vain (The Feeling)

- Let's stick together (KT Tunstall)

- Fast car (Mutya Buena)

- Don't look back into the sun (The View)

A nice album in general. Not very very special, but nice to see and hear what artists have done to songs from the past.

And again I prefer the music from the 70s and 80s - the 90s didn't impress me and they still don't. :blush-anim-cl:
