IT will come as little surprise to hear that pop royalty Mika got his big break singing jingles.

Consider all the songs that have rocketed up the charts after their staring role on an ad campaign, and it quickly becomes clear that the infectious single is only one rung further up the ladder.

For Mika, though, the route to stardom didn't prove easy.

His heart-on-his-sleeve confession, on single Grace Kelly, that he'd try a bit of anything to get that precious break documents the frustration of a classically trained singer who had his eyes on stardom from the age of nine.

He got there in the end, after performing an impromptu audition for a talent spotter from Universal Records in the lobby of a London hotel. Even now, the Lebanese boy maintains that the scout offered him a contract just to shut him up.

A year or so later, and Mika is a platinum selling superstar about to stage a two-night stand in Manchester. There's no arguing with result...

Mika plays the Apollo again on Tuesday, November 20. £18.50. First night sold out.

Which paper was this? Bless their hearts after the disgraceful MEN review.

Love today, from Marilyn

Except that again, it is inaccurate. Mika wasn't confessing that he'd try anything to get the break in Grace Kelly, the song is all about him staying true to himself and not giving in to the pressure to conform.
