But I thought I'd make a thread to one of the most important days on the Aussie calendar! So, everyone: feel free to post fun facts, pics, anything related to Aussieland! And Aussies, post what you're up to on Aussie Day (pics and vids are most welcome!) and one just in case people want to colour it in ... The Land Down Under!! Our coat of arms! Lastly, some facts... • Australia Day is celebrated every year on January 26. It marks to day in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip unfurled the British flag at Sydney Cove. • The Australian flag was first flown at the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne on September 3, 1901. • One of the five people credited with the design of the flag was a 14 year old school boy named Ivor Evans • The first recorded celebration of Australia Day was in 1908 • Lionel Rose became the first Aboriginal Australian of the Year in 1968 • The 1988 Bicentennial year was also named a Year of Mourning for Australia’s Aboriginal people • The Australia Day Regatta is the oldest continuously held annual regatta in the world • The Australia Day Ambassador Program sees high-achieving Aussies attend local Australia Day celebrations in towns and cities across the nation • Many Australians celebrate Australia Day by holding a barbeque • Advance Australia Fair was composed in the 1800s by Scotsman Peter Dodds McCormick • The emu and the kangaroo were chosen for Australia’s coat of arms because they cannot walk backwards • Polymer banknotes are an Aussie invention and are now used in 22 countries worldwide • The world has only two egg-laying mammals and both are found in Australia – the echidna and the platypus • Vegemite was concocted in 1923 by Dr Cyril P. Callister who combined leftover brewer’s yeast with various vegetable and spice additives. Aussies buy it at the rate of 44 jars per minute! • Lamingtons, the cubed cakes made out of sponge dipped in chocolate and desiccated coconut, were named after Charles Cochrane-Lamington, who served as Governor of Queensland from 1896 to 1901 (Thank you New Idea!!!) Australia day is about displaying your countries pride, by painting your face, wearing flags and generally looking like a tool Australia day is about the great aussie barbie (Flag clothing optional, but encouraged) And of course the beer Its about the fireworks too And further its about the public holiday to do all this, whether you spend it at the pool At the beach or the Big Day out Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I live on the beautiful Gold Coast which I encourage everyone to visit (even to my overseas friends that hate flying!!).....Especially MIKA you bad boy.....get your butt over here this year My plans for Australia day are......MFC.....erm..... and we will have a BBQ, you can't get any more Aussie than that, mates!!
