When I got home from school wednesday, my mom told that she had heard about the concert on the radio and that a lot of people were already there, and some of them had seen the concert the day before also. At that moment I thought: 'hmm, maybe that's a little bit crazy.' But after seeing it myself, i totally get it. I'm very jealous of all the people in Amsterdam at the moment! Yesterday I was seriously looking for a way to trade my werchterticket for a TW Classic one. But maybe I just have to go to both. (= I felt exactly the same way afterwards! It's an article from De Morgen Mika tussen speels en spectaculair in een tot de nok gevuld Sportpaleis *** Cabaret met Willie Wonka Foto Alex Vanhee. In een hopeloos uitverkocht Sportpaleis stelde Mika woensdagavond zijn exuberante nieuwe show voor. Die blonk niet bepaald uit in originaliteit, maar wel nadrukkelijk in kitsch en kleuren. Twee uur lang onderhield de Brits-Libanese zanger je daarbij met een haast eindeloze rist hits, cabaret en gimmicks, die nét niet verbleekten nij zijn onweerstaanbare charme. Foto Alex Vanhee. Met een grootse show stak Mika de Dangerous World Tour van Michael Jackson en Zoo TV van U2 naar de kroon. Hoe weinig inventief de vondsten ook mochten zijn, het spektakel sorteerde het juiste effect Foto Alex Vanhee. Ondanks de overvloed aan prikkels kon er gesnoeid worden in de set Foto Alex Vanhee. Niet kwaad voor een artiest van 26 die vandaag nauwelijks twee langspelers onder de arm kan meedragen. Het heeft er dan ook alle schijn van dat Mika, geboren in Beiroet als Michael Holbrook Penniman, een superster in wording is. Zoiets bleek hij zelf ook te beseffen. Of daar getuigde de bombastische introductie toch van: daarin werd een extra journaal voorgelezen door sir Ian McKellen vanaf een gigantisch scherm - de dramatiek in diens stem kon hoogstens je drankje koud laten. Vlak daarna kwam Mika over het podium gezweefd in astronautenpak. Zowel Zoo TV als de Dangerous World Tour van Michael Jackson sprongen je bij die intro spontaan voor de geest, net als de opzichtige verwijzing naar 2001: A Space Odyssey. Maar hoe weinig innovatief die vondsten ook mochten zijn, het spektakel sorteerde absoluut het gewenste effect. En wie deze introductie uiteindelijk zelfs een tikkeltje te lang uitgesponnen vond, werd nadien evengoed murw geslagen. In onvervalst marstempo zelfs: hits als 'Relax, Take It Easy', 'Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)' en 'Stuck in the Middle' werden quasi achteloos na elkaar afgevuurd, waarbij de popster onvermoeibaar alle hoeken van het podium verkende, danste op zijn buffetpiano of tussen twee gigantische opblaasbenen huppelde. Hadden we die gimmick overigens niet al eerder bij Elton John gezien? Tussen kinderlijk en infantiel Op zo'n manier kon Mika uiteraard niet verhullen dat hij goeddeels opgetrokken is uit het DNA van de Rocket Man, net als dat van Jimmy Sommerville, Marc Bolan en Rufus Wainwright. Maar tegelijk bleek in dat frêle jongetjeslichaam ook genoeg ruimte voor Willie Wonka of het konijn uit Alice in Wonderland, excentrieke kinderlokkers die in een voortdurende staat van opperste verbazing leken te verkeren. In die combinatie wiebelde de show niet zelden tussen kinderlijke verwondering en infantiel cabaret: de act met een magische koffer die sprak, boerde en rekwisieten braakte, zorgde bijvoorbeeld voor enige plaatsvervangende gêne, terwijl het schietspelletje in 'Love Today' je iets te nadrukkelijk terugvoerde naar les temps perdus tijdens het speelkwartiertje of een aflevering van Kabouter Plop. Nee, dan verkozen we wel de scènes aan het eind van de show, met een brandend huis op de backdrop en een miniatuur-Golgotha als decor, inclusief houten kruisen en, welja, een Mardi Grasparade. Ondanks die overvloed aan bizarre prikkels kreeg je toch wel vaker de indruk dat er nog volop gesnoeid kon worden in de set. Een song als 'Blue Eyes' viel zonder opzichtige effecten bijvoorbeeld erg flauwtjes uit, en zonder het imposante koor op de parterre van het Sportpaleis zou 'Blame it on the Girls' een slag in het water geworden zijn. Ook 'I See You' was niet bepaald een hoogvlieger in de set: zonder de dans van planeten boven je hoofd, zou dat muzikale opvullertje je niet eens opgevallen zijn. Met 'Good Girl Gone' werd het tempo gelukkig weer gevoelig opgedreven, en wist Mika ook muzikaal alle criticasters de mond te snoeren: meer dan een klavecimbel, een operazangeres en een aanzwellend onweer had hij niet nodig voor die popsymfonie. Een zeldzame keer wist de popster zelfs te ontroeren - in de sentimentele meezinger 'Billy Brown' bijvoorbeeld. Maar evengoed deed hij opgeschoten kleuters en lagereschoolkinderen het noorden kwijt raken tijdens een eindeloos confetti-offensief in 'We Are Golden' en 'Lollipop'. Een zichtbaar geëmotioneerde Mika bedankte het publiek veelvuldig in die bisronde: een vrij rommelige uitvoering van 'Grace Kelly' wilden we daarmee desgevallend vergeven. Ook al omdat Mika in de fenomenale afsluiter 'Lollipop' (met vuilnisbakken en serpentijn!) het vermoeden wekte dat Werchter Classic het tweede woord van zijn titel waard zal maken dit jaar. Missie geslaagd: het werd een groot kitschfeest. Reusachtige opblaasbenen, een salon op een hellend vlak, een stoet vol roze en gele figuurtjes, een stukje opera — en dan vergeten we nog tientallen rariteiten die we woensdagavond in het Sportpaleis zagen passeren. Neen, een show van Michael Holbrook Penniman, Jr — u mag gerust Mika zeggen — verveelt zelden. De visuele effecten van Mika waren de mooiste die we dit jaar al zagen: vooral wanneer de beeldschermen de vorm van een boek aannamen, zaten we perplex te kijken. Al was de show dan het summum van kitsch. Maar hoe zat het muzikaal? Wel, hoogst aardig. Mika ging stomend van start, met ‘Relax, take it easy’ en ‘Big girl (you are beautiful)’. Ook de rest van de set zat prima in elkaar, op een inzinking met de ballads halverwege na. De hoogtepunten waren te voorspellen: ‘Blame it on the girls’, ‘Dr John’, ‘We are golden’... ‘Grace Kelly’ spaarde hij op voor de uitbundige bissen. Mika is de jongste jaren uitgegroeid tot een homo-icoon, al blijft hij op de vlakte over zijn eigen geaardheid. In de zaal zaten zo veel homo’s dat heteromannen opvallend hard hun best deden om er zo hetero mogelijk uit te zien: kauwgom kauwen, bier drinken, stoere blik.We zagen ook veel kinderen in het Sportpaleis: Mika spreekt ook de allerjongsten aan. Allicht zijn er weinigen die woensdag ontgoocheld naar huis reden. Mika gebruikte in het Sportpaleis de oudste truc uit het boekje Hoe krijg ik het publiek aan mijn kant: spreek de taal van je publiek. Hij had de moeite gedaan om wat Nederlandse zinnetjes onder knie te krijgen. Opmerkelijk hoe hij zelfs de intonatie en de klemtonen perfect had. ‘Ik ben dood’, riep hij op een gegeven moment. Zijn Nederlands leverde hem met de regelmaat van de klok open doekjes op. Hij wierp het enthousiaste publiek bovendien zoveel complimentjes toe, dat we er bijna ongemakkelijk van werden. Het was ook opvallend hoe opgewekt Mika weer was. Als een moderne Freddie Mercury dartelde hij over het podium, alsof het zijn speeltuin was. Falset Een optreden van Mika is fun, maar je mag hem niet onderschatten. Met subtiele bewegingen houdt hij de hele show strak in handen, als een ringmeester in het circus. Mika was ook erg goed bij stem: in de lagere tonen zitten soms wat onvolkomenheden, maar zijn troef is zijn kraakheldere falsetstem. Zelfs na veel heen en weer springen en dansen klonk hij als een klok. De meeste mensen die een zitplaats gekocht hadden, hebben woensdagavond niet lang op hun stoeltjes gezeten. Mika maakt geen complexe muziek en zijn teksten zijn niets voor poëzieliefhebbers, maar zijn optredens zijn heel erg leuk. Een avondje guilty pleasure. ? What's the relevance that he's, according to the journalists, an "icon for gay people", and there are many gay people in the audience? Is that so important? It's not like the writer's going to pay attention to the amount of gay men who go to another pop act's gig! And honestly, I didn't see any guys acting more "macho" over there, to prove they're not gay. Why do they compare him to other acts AGAIN (I know Freddie Mercury is difficult to get out of their heads now, but is it really necessary?), while he's got a style of his own? What does it matter when watching a live show? Is the pleasure of going to a Mika gig really that guilty, and why? And by the way, I don't think the gig was flushed away by the show around it at all, though many articles say so. I just think that these writers have a very strange point of view, almost like liking it (3 stars is an okay score), but being ashamed of it, so looking for points to make the gig look foolish! Biekje Posted May 8, 2010 Share Posted May 8, 2010 Just a small report from me:aah: I got very ill just before the support act, while we were standing front row, almost in the middle...so I HAD to leave my spot. Sooo if you find any pictures of the front row people with me in it...I am not looking very happy... My best friend took really good care of me and we got into the first aid. I didn't see the whole show, we got some seats at the back, far away from the stage. But I was running to the toilet every half hour or so. I was picked before as BG, but I had to leave again and I was really sad at that point (as one of the girls who was going to be BG told me she didnt really want to be BG and actually wanted to see the whole show...so when Mrs P asked if anyone wanted to leave, I suspected her to leave...but then she got quiet...), but in the end I'm quite happy that I didnt got to be one of them.... imagine me...backstage...Mika running by...me at the toilet being ill...nahhh!! Wish I could have seen the show though.... Was ill with a fever and a headache in bed the day after and THANKFULLY better on friday for Amsterdam! So...not a very nice report...sorry, but it's bugging me a bit, because my best friend stayed with me the WHOLE time and also gave up her amazingly good spot! Gotta love her!!! Thank you sooo much Monie and Miek for finding my sunglasses and taking it with you! I didnt even notice they were gone, but SOOOO happy I got them back!!! (het zijn namelijk glazen op sterkte!)
