The artist-fan dynamic in the Twitter era

Personally I have a much bigger problem with MS than I do with Mika.

But then I don't have a problem with Mika at all.

He is what he is and I am happy with that. Accept people for what they are is the way I go about things. If you aren't happy with the way that Mika interacts with fans/or doesn't/ or does sometimes then doesn't, well move on.

But who is it who made the promises in the first place? Mika. He was the one who blogged and vlogged about his plans for a website that would be this great destination full of all of this amazing content that never came to fruition.

Ultimately he doesn't owe us anything, and if he makes a CD and does some gigs and press then he's met his obligations as a recording artist. But the lack of follow-through on other things is disappointing.

i thought about this boyfriend analogy again this morning, and thought, if mika is the boyfriend who is doing just enough to keep us hooked, then we are the nagging girlfriend who is trying to change him. :teehee: just because we love him, because we want him to be the best he can be. but guys don't see it that way, they just feel critizised. it's that kind of relationship where we can't really live with each other, but can't live without each other either. luckily it's not an exclusive relationship, everyone involved can come and go as they please, and just has to hope that the other one is still there when they return. imagine if mika wrote an angry tweet to each of his fans who joined the fanclub of another singer!

:lmfao: It's so true! And you're absolutely right. We women only nag because it's in the man's best interest. Shame they never seem to agree. :mf_rosetinted:

And I'm glad Mika's not sending jealous tweets every time we join another fan club. If anything, Mika is the "other man" and I've spent four years cheating on (and neglecting :fisch:) the other artists I loved pre-Mika. :blush-anim-cl:

"Mika called you guys personally"

Fans were already queueing at the venue the day of the gig when Mika realized he would have to cancel. So he had his tour manager John phone him, and then John put Mika on speakerphone so that he could personally apologize to the fans who were there. It was very good of him after all the silence about earlier cancellations, and greatly appreciated. He and his team were taking note of our moaning. :teehee:

I think (and please, correct me if I´m wrong) that things go right when he´s on tour (I mean, about presales, queues and stuff) and it just goes wrong when he´s not touring... maybe, yes,he needs a bit of pressure as fans did in the past to get a response... but... which is the way to do it?? we are moaning here a lot and it seems no one notices...

Actually everything that has ever gone right in terms of presales or queues or anything, really, is because of the fan community expressing what we want and - when Mika/Team Mika agree with the suggestion - applying pressure for it to be carried out according to plan. I know it's a web thing and not a tour thing, but in early 2008 for example things were a mess. :aah: When Mika first took ownership of MFC his management at the time had MFC hosted on a really crappy server that also hosted porn sites and was always crashing. :freak: We had to push and push for Team Mika to authorize StandardToaster, our technical admin, to move MFC to a larger and more stable server. It's still not always perfect, but it's far better than it was before.

There was a time when an MFC presale or even a Mikasounds presale were amazing dreams that we never thought would come true. Same with a priority queue for the first 50 or 100 fans as happened on the European tour. All of this has happened because the fan community made it known that these things are important to us. They weren't happening until MFC asked for it.

I am just a little lost as to what all this has to do with the way that Mika communicates, or doesn't, with fans via Twitter or whatever. I feel we are talking about two different subjects here. I wouldn't argue for one minute that increased communication with TM would be a great advantage. We all have to play guessing games trying to speculate when things are going to happen.

But in my opinion all of that is not really related to Mika's Tweets. They are management issues. Yes, it would be great if he tweeted about his plans but he never really has and I don't suppose he ever really will. My point really was....this is Mika.....like it or lump it. (NOT this is Team Mika). There are a lot of people who have obviously 'lumped it' and have gone elsewhere but there are also quite a lot of people still here. So one would assume they like it.

Well these things are all aspects of the same big problem, really. Whose fault is it that Mikasounds.com has a broken blog and broken links? It's the Mikasounds team. But whose fault is it that the content Mika spoke about (comics, pictures, drawings, blogs) has never surfaced? It's Mika's. Now in his defense I'm sure being on the road all the time and now focusing on writing does take up a significant portion of his time, and that all this extra web content is no longer on his radar. Mika seems to get excited about ideas and but then move on to the next interesting thing rather quickly. I suspect that's at least partially why he was so into vlogs as well as Twitter for a while, but then it all dried up; the novelty has worn off and he's moved on.

You could argue "oh, that's just Mika, either accept him for who he is or find another artist" but the problem with that is this:

I've been checking Twitter the past few days because people are talking about Mika being in LA and I can't believe how many tweets I come across from people who ask "whatever happened to Mika?" Is that what he wants? To reinvent the wheel every time he releases an album instead of just taking a few minutes to let the world know he's still there and still making music?

People are forgetting who he is. The people who comprise his wider fanbase outside of MFC and other similar communities don't have the inclination to follow his career as intently as those of us who squee over a Hugo Boss ad from Russia. Those are the people he's losing with his hit and miss communication style. And like mellody said, we sound like nagging girlfriends (:roftl:) but we find this stuff frustrating because it seems like it's not in the best interests of his career.

I guess my perception of things is different from yours then because I remember Mika being engaged with fans for months at a time before he released his album. Blogging, making videos and tweeting. Maybe I'm just looking at the past through

I think a lot of us are living in the past, but it's not surprising. :lmfao: When he was making TBWKTM we got something from him every six weeks at least, including studio vlogs when he was still in the demo phase. Then he found Twitter in March 2009 and kept it up for pretty much the rest of the year. This time around he's more silent. :dunno:

Thanks for explaining, there's so much I didn't know...

Is MFC really owned by Mika?

Yes. Originally MFC was a fan creation, and then when it became succesful Mika bought the site. He's really been the perfect owner: he pays the bills and otherwise stays hands off, letting us do what's worked for four years and not trying to fix what isn't broken. :roftl:

But we should be used to that by now.....for years Mika has promised things then lost interest and moved on.

Every artist had hard core fans who 'know everything'...and others who are just semi interested. Personally I believe that with a good strong album Mika will gain a lot of popularity again. He is obviously very busy working- and progressing his career in the way that he wants. He isn't stupid....if he wanted to communicate on Twitter a lot more he could. He obviously chooses not to.

My whole point really was....it doesn't bother me.

But I realise that it does bother others.

Sorry I haven't caught up on this thread again yet, but I just saw this on Twitter. This is exactly what I was saying about how his nonsense tweets would appear to casual fans during the whole bee/clown argument. I've not included the person's name, but these are their tweets:

  • I CAN'T FIND MIKA'S TWITTER. WHY IS THIS SO. I KNOW HE HAS ONE! Someone help me.

  • what, i've only liked mika for 5 days. is mikasounds really him? D: i thought his english would be better... *heartbroken*

  • i was kind of hoping it was a faker.

You could argue "oh, that's just Mika, either accept him for who he is or find another artist" but the problem with that is this:

You know what, I'm really bored with this talk of "Oh he must be busy, why would he tweet if he was busy" or whatever. Lady GaGa and Justin Bieber are bloody busy plugging their own docu-films or creating tons of hype over the music/projects and constantly churning out new tunes and being in the press. Yet they manage to tweet their fans almost obsessively practically everyday. While I understand that Mika must indeed be busy, I don't deny that in the slightest, but how hard is it to write something in 140 characters or less? It takes 15 seconds.

I follow Mika as an artist and musician. I am a big fan and have been since the beginning. I enjoy his music and enjoy his live shows. In fact, if it wasn't for this site I wouldn't have a flippin' idea as to what was going on in his life because he's never in the newspapers, magazines, TV shows, radio etc. He's nowhere. And if he keeps this up with no publicity whether he's touring or making music or not he is just going to be known as a one-hit wonder who sings about Grace Kelly and Freddie and has a high voice - if that. I don't want that for him and it's frustrating that some of us fans tend to take his career more seriously than he does himself :aah:

wow... to the first one.. well... I think "mikasounds" is quite easy to find IMO.. is the name of his site...

about the other two... well... yes... but if you want to know something about Mika,I think you first need to go to youtube... if you like his music and vids... well... And lately he doesn´t misspell that much, does he??

Anyway... it´s a pity... yes.
