7년 만에 한국을 찾은 뮤지션 미카가 <아레나 옴므 플러스>를 만났다. 공연 다음날 촬영장에서 만난 미카는 한국 팬들에게 꼭 들려주고 싶었던 노래부터, 한국에 올 때마다 꼭 챙겨 먹는 음식, 지금 가장 즐겨듣는 아티스트 리스트에 대해 전했다.

미카는 이번 서울재즈페스티벌에서 'Good Guys'를 꼭 들려주고 싶었다고 했다.

<W Korea> 서울재즈페스티벌로 7년 만에 한국 관객을 다시 만난다. 지난 2020년 3월 월드투어 ‘Revelation’의 일환으로 한국을 찾을 예정이었지만 코로나19로 공연이 취소된 적 있다. 오랜만의 내한인데 소감이 어떤가?

지난 7년이라는 긴 시간 사이 모두가 알다시피 팬데믹이 닥쳤고 공연 문화가 많이 변했다. 온라인에서 가수와 팬이 유대를 쌓는 것이 제법 흔한 일이 되지 않았나. 하지만 우리에겐 여전히 차가운 쇼가 아닌, 가슴을 뜨겁게 만드는 쇼가필요하다고 생각한다. 더구나 이번 무대는 한국 관객과의 오랜만의 재회이기도 하니 아주, 아주, 아주 인터랙티브한 공연으로 꾸릴 예정이다. 관객들 앞으로 걸어가 음악으로 이런 얘기를 건넬 거다. ‘좋아요, 우리 대화합시다. 내가 뭘 할 건지보여줄 테니, 당신도 뭘 할 건지 보여주세요!’

‘Revelation’ 투어는 2015년 4집 <No Place In heaven> 이후 무려 4년 만에 발매한 5집 <My Name is Michael Holbrook>을 기념해 진행됐다. 언젠가 당신은 5집에 대해 ‘자신의 고유한 색깔을 잃지 않고 어른으로 성장하는 것을 담은 앨범’이라 설명한 적 있는데, 어떤 의미인가?

글쎄, 차기 앨범은 ‘빠른 속도(High Velocity)’란 단어로 설명할 수 있을 것 같다. 빠른 속도에 힘입어 노래를 듣는 순간다른 에너지 상태로 진입하게 만드는 것을 염두에 두고 작업 중이다. 그래서 작업할 때 너무 많은 생각을 하지 않으려고애쓴다. 너무 ‘쿨’해지려고 하거나, 라디오 친화적으로도 작업하지 않을 거다. 그래서인지 요즘 피아노 앞에서 혼자 작업을 많이 한다. 그 순간엔 완전히 ‘나’ 자신이 되어 무아지경에 빠져서 모든 즐겁고 행복한 우연이 담긴 곡을 쓸 수 있으니까. 아마 올해 말, 새 앨범을 들을 수 있을 거다.

최근 당신의 인스타그램에서 블랙핑크와 함께 찍은 사진을 보고 반가웠다. 함께 협업해보고 싶은 K팝 뮤지션이 있나?

사실 10년 전에도 K팝 뮤지션과 함께 작업해보고 싶은 마음이 있었다. 그때 당시 주변에서 “안 돼, 너무 상업적이잖아”라며 하도 말려서 “아니, 근데 정말 재미있잖아?”라고 혼자 생각하고 말았던 기억이 있지만. 그런데 이제는 인식이 완전히바뀐 것 같다. 블랙핑크든 BTS든 K팝 슈퍼스타를 향한 세계 각국의 뜨거운 반응이 너무 놀랍다. 이런 현상은 어디서도본 적 없는 것 같다. 비욘세 콘서트에서도 이토록 뜨거운 에너지는 못 봤으니까. 음악과는 별개로 시카고의 15세 아이, 파리의 30세 어른, 스웨덴의 할머니까지 동시에 사로잡은 K팝의 요소는 무엇인지 이해하려고 노력 중이다. 하나 확실한 것은 K팝 뮤지션만큼 각자 고유의 세계관을 구축하고 제시하는 이들이 드물다는 것. 온라인에서 보고 경험하기에 최적화된시대이지 않나. 지구 멀리서도 그들이 음악, 비주얼, 스토리텔링으로 구현한 세계관을 보고 희열하지 않을 이는 극히 드물 거다.

지금은 그저 구경꾼이 되는 것만으로도 행복하다!(웃음)

당신을 마이크 앞에 서게 만드는 순간들 사이엔 어떤 공통점이 있다고 느껴지나?

없다! 정말 재미있는 건 수십, 수백 번 마이크를 잡을 때마다 항상 다른 무언가가 나온다는 것이다. 개인적으로 뮤지션은마지막 공연으로 그 자신이 기억된다고 생각한다. 그런데 언제가 마지막 공연이 될지는 아무도 모르지. 그래서 나에게 마이크를 잡는다는 것은 항상 신성한 일처럼 다가온다. 비로소 내가 변하고 다른 사람이 되는 순간이기도 하니까. 그래서가끔 젊은 뮤지션들이 아무렇지도 않게 건들건들 마이크를 쥐면 정말이지 화가 난다. ‘미쳤구나’라고 생각한다. 그럴 때면 그들에게 이렇게 말해주곤 한다. “당신이 지금 그 물건을 손에 쥘 땐 꼭 그럴 만한 이유가 있어야 해요. 당신이 목소리를 실어 사람들에게 자신을 전하기 위해 선택한 물건인 셈이니.”

뮤지션으로서 당신이 고수하는 철칙은 무엇인가?

즐길 것, 그것도 아주 진지하게 즐길 것.

머지않아 서울재즈페스티벌 무대에 선다. 페스티벌이 끝나고 서울에서 휴식을 보낼 시간이 주어진다면 무엇을 하고 싶나?

우선 평소 먹고 싶었지만 참아온 한국 음식을 잔뜩 먹을 거다(웃음). 또 한국 전통 직물을 좋아한다. 20년 동안 개인적으로 수집해온 것 같다. 서울에 올 때면 항상 전통 직물을 취급하는 곳을 찾아 비단이며 삼베를 산 기억이 있다. 그걸 재료로직접 옷을 만들기도 했다. 이번에도 직물점에 들르고 시간이 남는다면 글쎄, 산책하는 것도 좋을 것 같다. 예전에 한국을방문한 때가 마침 정월 대보름이었는데 한복을 입고 고궁을 돌아다니는 청소년들의 모습이 정말 인상적이었다. 마치 회색 도시 속에 피어난 꽃잎 같달까. 이번에도 산책을 하며 이 도시를 좀 더 탐험해보고 싶다.

Whether we realize it or not, as we grow and get older, we feel pressured to play the role of a ‘restrained adult’. Of course, it's important to grow up responsibly, but I think we should allow and protect the innocence we had when we were young. When we are young, no one is strict with himself or overly critical of what he has done. I believe that such innocence is inherent in magical power. So I always say that one of the best exercises you can do as an artist is to draw with a pen on paper or write a poem. And I advise you to be really, really, really proud of the result you made. They then keep the result for a couple of hours, then tear it into a million pieces and tell no one to show it. If you look at it, even if it is a shabby result in the eyes of others, the small gestures of the process will pile up and one day you will be able to face the true moment that will create great art.

Oh my god! First of all, Michael is the name you see when you get a parking ticket, gas or electricity bill. In other words, whenever I have to pay or get into trouble, I think of the name Michael Holbrook Penniman (laughs). On the other hand, Mika means freedom. It's music, it's art, it's performance. The two may have the same DNA, but in fact, they are completely opposite in every way, and this point seems to give me a sense of liberation. And in fact, the 5th album is the album that came out to the world after her mother died after fighting for a long time. When she grew up, she was always with her mother. My mother trained me 4-5 hours a day from the age of 7, and I started working at the age of 8. At least he would have driven all over Europe with his mother in a Toyota Previa. I'm not going to try to be too 'cool' or work radio-friendly. Maybe that's why I do a lot of work alone in front of the piano these days. Are there any K-pop musicians you would like to collaborate with?

꼬박 7년 만에 미카가 한국을 다시 찾는다. 그사이 미카는 마치 일기장과도 같은, 그의 내밀한 이야기를 담은 음악을 여럿 발표했다. 어쩌면 그 음악들은 미카가 자신과 ‘화해’하는 방법이었을지도 모른다. 그로써 더 솔직하고, 자유로워진 미카는 서울재즈페스티벌 1일 차 무대에 헤드라이너로 서며 우리 앞에 선다.

<W Korea> 서울재즈페스티벌로 7년 만에 한국 관객을 다시 만난다. 지난 2020년 3월 월드투어 ‘Revelation’의 일환으로 한국을 찾을 예정이었지만 코로나19로 공연이 취소된 적 있다. 오랜만의 내한인데 소감이 어떤가?

MIKA 지난 7년이라는 긴 시간 사이 모두가 알다시피 팬데믹이 닥쳤고 공연 문화가 많이 변했다. 온라인에서 가수와 팬이 유대를 쌓는 것이 제법 흔한 일이 되지 않았나. 하지만 우리에겐 여전히 차가운 쇼가 아닌, 가슴을 뜨겁게 만드는 쇼가 필요하다고 생각한다. 더구나 이번 무대는 한국 관객과의 오랜만의 재회이기도 하니 아주, 아주, 아주 인터랙티브한 공연으로 꾸릴 예정이다. 관객들 앞으로 걸어가 음악으로 이런 얘기를 건넬 거다. ‘좋아요, 우리 대화합시다. 내가 뭘 할 건지 보여줄 테니, 당신도 뭘 할 건지 보여주세요!’

‘Revelation’ 투어는 2015년 4집 <No Place In heaven> 이후 무려 4년 만에 발매한 5집 <My Name is Michael Holbrook>을 기념해 진행됐다. 언젠가 당신은 5집에 대해 ‘자신의 고유한 색깔을 잃지 않고 어른으로 성장하는 것을 담은 앨범’이라 설명한 적 있는데, 어떤 의미인가?

우리가 인지하든 못하든 성장하고 나이가 들면서 ‘절제된 어른’의 역할을 수행해야 할 것만 같은 압박감에 휩싸이지 않나. 물론 책임감 있게 성장하는 것도 중요하지만 어릴 때 가지고 있던 순진무구함을 조금은 허용하고 보호해야 한다고 생각한다. 누구나 어렸을 땐 자신에게 엄격하거나 자신이 한 일에 대해 지나치게 평가하려고 하지 않는다. 이러한 순수함에야말로 마법 같은 힘이 내재되어 있다고 생각한다. 그래서 난 항상 예술가로서 할 수 있는 최고의 연습 중 하나는 펜으로 종이에 그림을 그리거나 시를 쓰는 것이라고 말하곤 한다. 그리고 그렇게 만든 결과물을 정말, 정말, 정말 자랑스러워하라고 조언한다. 그런 다음 두어 시간 정도는 결과물을 보관하고, 이후 백만 조각으로 찢어서 아무에게도 보여주지 말라고 한다. 그러다 보면 비록 남들 눈엔 초라한 결과물일지라도 그 과정의 작은 제스처가 쌓이고 쌓여 언젠가는 위대한 예술을 탄생시킬 진정한 순간을 맞닥뜨릴 수 있게 될 테니까.

당신의 본명을 직접적으로 지시해 <My Name is Michael Holbrook>이란 앨범 제목을 지었다. 미카와 마이클 홀브록은 서로 얼마나 같고 얼마나 다른가?

오, 세상에! 우선 마이클은 주차위반 딱지나 가스 요금, 전기세 고지서를 받을 때 보는 이름이다. 즉 돈을 내야 하거나 곤경에 처할 때마다 마이클 홀브룩 페니맨이라는 이름을 떠올리는 셈이다(웃음). 반면 미카는 자유를 뜻한다. 음악이고, 예술이고, 퍼포먼스다. 둘은 DNA야 같겠지만 사실 모든 면에서 정반대고 바로 이 지점이 나에게 해방감을 주는 것 같다. 그리고 사실 5집은 어머니가 긴 시간 투병하다 돌아가신 후 세상에 나온 앨범이다. 돌이키면 어머니와 늘 함께였다. 7세 때부터 하루 4~5시간씩 어머니가 날 트레이닝시켰고, 8세 때부터 일하기 시작했으니까. 적어도 토요타 프레비아를 타고 어머니와 유럽 전역을 돌았을 거다. 어쩌면 어머니는 나에게 음악을, 가수란 직업을 주신 분이나 다름없다. 한편 아버지와는 늘 떨어져 지냈고 소원한 관계였다. 그러자 문득 이런 생각이 든 것 같다. ‘좋아요, 당신은 제 안에서 무엇인가요?’ 마이클 홀브록 페니맨 주니어로서, 그에게 묻고 싶었던 것 같기도 하다. 어쩌면 5집은 ‘나’와의 화해라고 불러도 좋을 거다.

4집 <No Place In Heaven>을 기점으로 당신은 자신을 있는 그대로 드러내고, 더는 그것을 두려워하지 않는다는 인상이 있다. 그렇기에 차기 앨범에서 어떤 새로운 이야기를 들려줄지 기대된다. 지금 준비 중인 앨범에 대한 힌트를 준다면?

글쎄, 차기 앨범은 ‘빠른 속도(High Velocity)’란 단어로 설명할 수 있을 것 같다. 빠른 속도에 힘입어 노래를 듣는 순간 다른 에너지 상태로 진입하게 만드는 것을 염두에 두고 작업 중이다. 그래서 작업할 때 너무 많은 생각을 하지 않으려고 애쓴다. 너무 ‘쿨’해지려고 하거나, 라디오 친화적으로도 작업하지 않을 거다. 그래서인지 요즘 피아노 앞에서 혼자 작업을 많이 한다. 그 순간엔 완전히 ‘나’ 자신이 되어 무아지경에 빠져서 모든 즐겁고 행복한 우연이 담긴 곡을 쓸 수 있으니까. 아마 올해 말, 새 앨범을 들을 수 있을 거다.

최근 당신의 인스타그램에서 블랙핑크와 함께 찍은 사진을 보고 반가웠다. 함께 협업해보고 싶은 K팝 뮤지션이 있나?

사실 10년 전에도 K팝 뮤지션과 함께 작업해보고 싶은 마음이 있었다. 그때 당시 주변에서 “안 돼, 너무 상업적이잖아”라며 하도 말려서 “아니, 근데 정말 재미있잖아?”라고 혼자 생각하고 말았던 기억이 있지만. 그런데 이제는 인식이 완전히 바뀐 것 같다. 블랙핑크든 BTS든 K팝 슈퍼스타를 향한 세계 각국의 뜨거운 반응이 너무 놀랍다. 이런 현상은 어디서도 본 적 없는 것 같다. 비욘세 콘서트에서도 이토록 뜨거운 에너지는 못 봤으니까. 음악과는 별개로 시카고의 15세 아이, 파리의 30세 어른, 스웨덴의 할머니까지 동시에 사로잡은 K팝의 요소는 무엇인지 이해하려고 노력 중이다. 하나 확실한 것은 K팝 뮤지션만큼 각자 고유의 세계관을 구축하고 제시하는 이들이 드물다는 것. 온라인에서 보고 경험하기에 최적화된 시대이지 않나. 지구 멀리서도 그들이 음악, 비주얼, 스토리텔링으로 구현한 세계관을 보고 희열하지 않을 이는 극히 드물 거다.

그래서 함께 작업해보고 싶은 K팝 뮤지션은?

지금은 그저 구경꾼이 되는 것만으로도 행복하다!(웃음)

당신을 마이크 앞에 서게 만드는 순간들 사이엔 어떤 공통점이 있다고 느껴지나?

없다! 정말 재미있는 건 수십, 수백 번 마이크를 잡을 때마다 항상 다른 무언가가 나온다는 것이다. 개인적으로 뮤지션은 마지막 공연으로 그 자신이 기억된다고 생각한다. 그런데 언제가 마지막 공연이 될지는 아무도 모르지. 그래서 나에게 마이크를 잡는다는 것은 항상 신성한 일처럼 다가온다. 비로소 내가 변하고 다른 사람이 되는 순간이기도 하니까. 그래서 가끔 젊은 뮤지션들이 아무렇지도 않게 건들건들 마이크를 쥐면 정말이지 화가 난다. ‘미쳤구나’라고 생각한다. 그럴 때면 그들에게 이렇게 말해주곤 한다. “당신이 지금 그 물건을 손에 쥘 땐 꼭 그럴 만한 이유가 있어야 해요. 당신이 목소리를 실어 사람들에게 자신을 전하기 위해 선택한 물건인 셈이니.”

뮤지션으로서 당신이 고수하는 철칙은 무엇인가?

즐길 것, 그것도 아주 진지하게 즐길 것.

머지않아 서울재즈페스티벌 무대에 선다. 페스티벌이 끝나고 서울에서 휴식을 보낼 시간이 주어진다면 무엇을 하고 싶나?

우선 평소 먹고 싶었지만 참아온 한국 음식을 잔뜩 먹을 거다(웃음). 또 한국 전통 직물을 좋아한다. 20년 동안 개인적으로 수집해온 것 같다. 서울에 올 때면 항상 전통 직물을 취급하는 곳을 찾아 비단이며 삼베를 산 기억이 있다. 그걸 재료로 직접 옷을 만들기도 했다. 이번에도 직물점에 들르고 시간이 남는다면 글쎄, 산책하는 것도 좋을 것 같다. 예전에 한국을 방문한 때가 마침 정월 대보름이었는데 한복을 입고 고궁을 돌아다니는 청소년들의 모습이 정말 인상적이었다. 마치 회색 도시 속에 피어난 꽃잎 같달까. 이번에도 산책을 하며 이 도시를 좀 더 탐험해보고 싶다.

7년 만에 한국을 찾은 뮤지션 미카가 <아레나 옴므 플러스>를 만났다. 공연 다음날 촬영장에서 만난 미카는 한국 팬들에게 꼭 들려주고 싶었던 노래부터, 한국에 올 때마다 꼭 챙겨 먹는 음식, 지금 가장 즐겨듣는 아티스트 리스트에 대해 전했다.

드디어 7년 만에 한국에 돌아왔어요. 감회가 남다를 것 같습니다.

마냥 기쁘죠. 얼마나 상상하던 일인데요. 원래는 2020년에 와야했어요. 단독
콘서트를 열기로 했는데 코로나19로 취소됐어요. 세계적으로 바이러스가 퍼지던 때라 취소결정을 내리기까지 정말 어려웠습니다. 전례 없는 일이었으니까요.

저뿐만 아니라 모두가 불안했을테고요. 그렇게 7년이 지난 거죠. 사실 '서울재즈페스티벌 2023'에서 공연 요청을 했을 때 고민이 앞섰어요. 새 앨범이 나온 것도 아닌데 내가 지금 뭘 보여줄 수 있을까 싶었거든요

그래도 한국에 왔네요. 이번에도 관객의 호응은 엄청났고요.

맞아요 한참 고민하다 결론을 내렸어요.

그냥 하자. 한국 팬들을 너무 오랫동안 못 봤다. 7년만에 한국에 왔는데 굉장히 놀랐어요 모두가 더 강해졌다고 느꼈거든요.

그동안 우리가 함께 성장했구나.

감정적으로도 더 성숙해졌구나.

무대 위에서 느낄 수 있었습니다.

다른나라에서 공연을 마친 다음 날 아침은 특별할 것 같습니다. 오늘은 일어나서 어떤 노래를 들었나요?

어제 잘 때는 빗소리를 틀어놓고 잤어요.

아침에는 세르지우 멘지스(Sergio Mendes)의 음악을 들었습니다. 오늘 서울재즈페스티벌에서 세르지우 멘지스의 무대가 있어서요. 마침 오늘 비가오네요. 비 오는 서울에서 세르지우 멘지스의 공연이라니. 완벽하네요.

이번 공연에서 한국팬을 위해 꼭 들려주고 싶은 노래가 있었나요?

'Good Guys'는 꼭 불러야겠다고 생각했어요. 한국 팬들이 예전처럼 너그럽게, 아주 큰 목소리로 따라 불러준다면 'Good Guys'를 꼭 부르겠다고 다짐했어요.

'Good Guys'는 앨범에 수록된 버전보다 라이브로 불렀을 때 더 에너지가 넘치는 곡이거든요.

어제는 무대에서 태극기와 호랑이 탈을 선보여서 화제가 됐어요 직접 준비해온 것인가요?

그럼요 무대의상과 장치는 전부 다 새롭게 제작했어요.

제게는 아티스트들로 구성된 소규모 특수제작팀이 있어요.

무대의상으로는 발렌티노 쿠튀르 제품과 저희 의상팀이 만든 의상을 함께 착용합니다.

저는 패션을 사랑하지만 공연할 때 입는 옷은 패션이 아닌 공연의 일부가 되어야 한다고 생각해요.

말씀하신 호랑이 달은 이탈리아 디자이너의 작품이고, 태극기는 팬이 만들어준 거예요.

태극기에는 하트 형태의 태극 문양이 있는데 그 가운데 저의 'M' 로고가 새겨져 있어요.

한국을 자주찾는편인데 방문시 꼭 먹는 음식이 있나요?

치킨이죠 한국프라이드치킨은 최고니까요 그리고 잡채, 치킨이랑 잡채는 맥주와 가장 잘 어울리는 음식이라고 생각합니다.

정말 정말 정말 최고예요 보통 외국 아티스트들이 한국에 오면 코리안 바비큐 많이 먹잖아요? 그것도 좋아요 장점은 파무침과 채소를 곁들여서 먹을 수 있다는 것이에요.

미카의 한국 사랑은 유명합니다. 한 인터뷰에서 "한국은 나의 커리어와 음악세계관에서 아주 중요한 나라라고했고요. 한국에서의경험이 영향을 미친 곡이 있을까 궁금했어요.

많은 아티스트들이 미국의 환경이나 영향력 아래 자신의 세계를 국한 짓고 있다고 생각해요 영어 중심으로 생각하는거죠. 여태까지 제가 가장 잘한 일은 런던을 떠난 것이라고 생각해요. 런던에만 머무르면 영어권 문화의 영향을 받아 그 안에 갇힐 수밖에 없거든요.

지금 보세요. 인제야 사람들이"시카고에서도 파리에서도 K-팝이 인기"라고 하잖아요K-팝은 예전부터 있었는데 영어권에 갇혀서 못 본것뿐이에요 저는 런던을 떠나서 더 넓은 세계를 보고 사람들이 무엇에 관심이 있는지 들여다볼수 있었어요.

정말 잘한일이라고 생각해요.

만일 한국을 주제로 곡을 쓴다면 어떤 노래가나올까요?

확실치는 않지만 에너지로 가득 차고 멜로디가 많은 곡이 되지 않을까요? 다양한 멜로디를 섞을 것 같아요. 일본에 유명한 영화음악가이자 팝 작곡가가 있어요. 칸노요코라는 뮤지션인데 <카우보이 비밥> OST를 만들었어요. 칸노의 음악을 들어보면 전 세계 음악을 정말 절묘하게 포괄하고 있어요. 천재죠 일렉트로, 팝, 컨템퍼러리를 모두 활용하거든요. 저도 칸노처럼 접근해보고싶어요 한국의 전통악기를 쓰면서 다양한 장르를 녹여낸 음악을 만든다면 정말 멋질 거예요.

화려한 수트를 즐겨 입는 것으로도 유명한데, 공연에 앞서 옷을 고를때 특별히 신경 쓰는 부분이 있나요?

옷은 항상 이야기를 전해야 한다고 생각해요 유명 브랜드의 옷을 입더라도 그 브랜드가 아니라 자신의스토리를 전달해야 해요. 실제로 그렇게 할 수 있고요 제가 가장 먼저 보는 것은 실루엣입니다. 실루엣은 무드를 바꾸는데 직접적인 영향을 끼쳐요 때로는 무대에서의 태도까지 결정짓죠.

이를테면 어떻게 바뀌나요?

예를 들어 어깨가 아주 넓은 재킷을 입는다면 당당하고
팝한 몸짓을 할 거예요. 반대로 어깨가 달라붙는 옷을 입는다면 조금 더 다가가기 쉽고 상냥한 느낌을 주겠죠. 원단이 갖고 있는 무게감이나 분위기가 저의 움직임을 바꾸거든요 그 움직임은 팬들에게 다가가는 저의 태도를 좌우하기 때문에 무척 중요합니다. 만일 공연에서 정장을 네벌 입는다면 매번 다른 스토리를 전하고 싶어서일 거예요.

대단히 실용적인 이야기네요. 그러면 평소 쇼핑할 때는어떤가요?

만일 제가 누군가에게 조언해야 한다면 첫째로퀄리티를 따져보라고 하고싶네요 성별이나스타일링에 상관없이 퀄리티가 중요합니다.
록스타가입든, 운동선수가 입든 옷의 퀄리티는 절대 거짓말하지 않으니까요. 두번째로는 나만의 드레스코드를 만드는걸 두려워하지 말라고 하고 싶어요. 만일 정말 마음에 드는 옷이 있는데 예산이 부족하다? 그림 여러 벌실 돈을 아껴서 내가 원하는 소재로 옷을 만들어 입어보세요.

꼭 슈퍼히어로 수트 이야기 같아요.

사람들은 겉모습이 중요하지 않다고 하는데 그건 말도 안되는 얘기예요 겉모습은 그 사람에게 들어가는 첫 번째문이잖아요 외모보다 훨씬 중요한 것이 있죠. 하지만 사람들은 외모를 보고 처음 당신이라는 사람들 인식하고 첫인상을 판단하죠. 돈이나 체형의 문제가 아니에요. 세상에 어떤 모습으로 비칠지, 무엇을 전달하고 싶은지에 관한 문제죠.

2007년 첫 정규앨범 <Life In Cartoon Motion> 내고 '제2의 프레디 머큐리'로 불렸습니다. 커리어가 쌓일수록 이런 수식은 족쇄처럼 느껴질 것 같아요. 'Grace Kelly'를 통해 직접 그 마음을 전한 바 있고요지금 가장 듣기 좋은 수식이 있나요?

이제 완전히 해방됐어요. 당시에는 저도 어려서어떻게 대답해야할지 몰랐거든요. 그냥 입 다물고 있었죠 지금은 어떤 수식으로도 불리지 않아도 돼서 좋아요 저만의 언어를 만들었고, 말 그대로 저 자신이 됐다고 생각해요. 누군가와 비교하면서 '어떠어떠한 누구'라는 말을 듣는 건 끔찍해요 세상이 바뀐 것 같아요. 예전에 누가 등장하면 "제2의 누구다 식으로 들에 넣고 규정하기를 좋아했던 것 같거든요. 이제는 그러지 않아요.
그렇게 세상이 바뀌는 동안 깨달은 점도 있을 것 같아요.
음악을 하면서 지켜야 할 것이 있어요. 가장 먼저 자기만의 세계를 가져야 해요. 그러면 사람들은 그 음악을 진짜로 받아들여줄겁니다. 깊이도 있어야죠. 뮤지션의 세계 안에는 수많은 층이 있어야 합니다. 끊임없이 음악을 만들어야하고요 그리고 무대에 서야죠. 공연은 아티스트만의 언어라고 생각합니다.

흔히 미카는 팝뮤지션'으로 통하지만, 디스코, 일렉트로닉, 올드팝 등 다양한 장르의 요소를 음악에 녹여냈잖아요. 스스로는 미카의 장르를 어떻게 정의 내리나요?

얼터너티브 팝팝 음악은 소비하는 사람을 위해서 만들어진 장르라고도 생각해요. 그조차장인이 공예품을 한땀한땀 수작업하듯 만들수 있습니다. 저는 심포니 오케스트라와 일렉트로닉 팝을 오가면서 곡을 만들어요.

아프리카 악기를 쓸 수도 있고요. 그럴 때 자유롭다고 느껴요

첫 앨범 <Life In Cartoon Motion>부터 5집 <My Name Is Michael Holbrook>까지 모든 앨범은 미카의 자서전이라고 생각합니다. 새 앨범을 염두에 두고 있을 텐데, 그런 미카에게 지금 가장 중요한 것은 무엇인지 궁금합니다.

자유죠. 지금 제가 가장 몰두하는 주제는 자유예요. 법적인 자유가 아니라 정서적이고 영적인 면에서 느끼는 자유. 사람이 나이를 먹고 경험을 쌓을수록 그것이 날 더 무겁게 할 수도 있어요. 저는 그 경험을 통해 어떻게 하면 내가 더 발전하고 자유로워질 수 있을지 생각해요. 그 방법을 찾으려고 굉장히 몰두하고 있어요. 그걸 알아낸다면 행복하게 나이들수있다고 생각해요가사를 읽다보면 독백이라기보다는 말을 거는 듯한
느낌을 받습니다. 대표곡으로 꼽히는 'Popular Song' 'Relax, Take It Easy' 'Elle Me Dit'이 그렇고요.

가사를 쓸 때 어떤 점을 고려하나요?

저는 그걸 정면적인 접근(Frontal Approach)'이라고불러요 저는 작사할때 어떤 주제를 이미지화하고묘사하기보다 그 주제를 가지고 청자에게 직접적으로다가가려고 해요 어떠한 상황이나 감정을 정면으로응시하려고 하고요

정말 많은 연구해왔다는 생각이 드네요 소설가가이야기할 것 같은 내용이에요.

실제로 저는 단숨에 핵심을 찌르는 스타일의 작가를 좋아해요. 어니스트 헤밍웨이가 그렇죠. 뮤지션중에는 패티 스미스가 있어요. 패티 스미스의 곡은 직설적이면서도 감동적이에요. 그의 작사방식을 좋아하고 저도 그 방법을 쓰고 있어요.

다른 방식으로 만든 곡도 있나요?

'Blue'의 경우에는 이미지를 좀 더 신경썼어요. 거대한 이미지를 통해서 핵심 단락으로 향합니다. 그리고 "나는 언제까지나 너의 슬픔과 상처까지도 사랑할 거야"라고 말해요 바로 이때 제가 등장하죠 저는 이야기를 듣는 사람과 맞닿아 있는 게 정말 중요하다고 생각해요. 그래서 2인칭을 즐겨 사용합니다.

생각해보세요 노래에서 '너' '당신'이라고 계속 부른다면 분명 '이 사람 나한테 얘기하는구나' 느낄거예요 얼마나 강렬하게 와닿겠어요

한국에서 수많은 팬이 '떼창'을 하는 것도 결국 소통을 느꼈기 때문일 것으로 생각합니다. 훗날 미카는 어떤 뮤지션으로 기억됐으면 하나요?

'여전히 창조적인 사람이구나 하고 이야기한다면 좋겠어요. 여전히 이야기를 전하는 사람으로 기억되고 싶고요. 형태는 중요하지 않습니다. 공연장에서 불리는 극장에서 영화음악으로 들리든, 갤러리에 전시되는 상관없어요 사람들이 제 음악을 들었을 때 '아, 내가 미카의 세상에 발을 들였구나 즉각적으로 느낄 수만 있다면요. 마치 집에 온 것처럼 편안함을 느낄 수 있는 세계를 만들고싶어요 지금을 돌이켜볼 만큼 시간이 흘렀을때 저도 팬들도 많이 변해 있으면 좋겠어요.

변화하는 사람은 창의적이니까요.

멋진 기준이네요. 그럼 미카가 생각하는 좋은 뮤지션은어떤 뮤지션입니까?

청자가 온전하게 자신의 이야기로 받아들일 수있는 음악을 만드는 뮤지션이 좋은 뮤지션이라고 생각합니다. 자신보다 음악을 더 큰 존재로 만들 수 있는 사람이 뮤지션이겠죠 거창한 이야기지만 누군가에게는 쉬운 일일 수도 있어요 정작 뮤지션 본인은 어떻게 했는지도 모른 채 그렇게 될 수도 있으니까요.

The morning after a performance in another country must be special. What song did you listen to when you woke up today?

Yesterday, when I went to bed, I slept with the sound of rain turned on.

In the morning I listened to the music of Sergio Mendes. There is a stage of Sergio Menzies at the Seoul Jazz Festival today. It's raining today. A performance by Sergio Menzies in rainy Seoul. That's perfect.

Was there a song you really wanted to hear for Korean fans at this concert?

I thought I had to sing 'Good Guys'. I made a promise to myself that I would sing 'Good Guys' if Korean fans sang along generously and with a very loud voice like before.

'Good Guys' is a song with more energy when sung live than the version on the album.

Yesterday, The national flag of South Korea and a tiger mask were displayed on stage and became a hot topic. Did you prepare them yourself?

Of course, the stage costumes and equipment were all new.

I have a small special production team of artists.

For stage costumes, Valentino Couture products and costumes made by our costume team are worn together.

I love fashion, but I think the clothes you wear when performing should be part of the performance, not fashion.

The tiger moon you mentioned is the work of an Italian designer, and the Taegeukgi was made by a fan.

There is a heart-shaped Taegeuk pattern on the Taegeukgi (The national flag of South Korea), and my 'M' logo is engraved in the middle.

You often visit Korea. Is there a food you must eat when you visit Korea?

It's chicken. Korean fried chicken is the best. And I think japchae, chicken and japchae are the foods that go best with beer.

It's really, really, really the best. Usually when foreign artists come to Korea, they eat a lot of Korean barbecue, right? That's good too. The advantage is that you can eat it with green onion salad and vegetables.

Many artists think that they are confining their world to the environment and influence of the United States. I think the best thing I've done so far has been to leave London. If you stay only in London, you will be influenced by the English-speaking culture and you will be trapped in it.

I think it was a really good job.

If you were to write a song with a Korean theme, what kind of song would it be?

I'm not sure, but wouldn't it be a song full of energy and a lot of melody? I think I will mix various melodies. There is a famous film composer and pop composer in Japan. A musician named Yoko Kanno, and she made the OST for <Cowboy Bebop>. When you listen to Kanno's music, it really subtly encompasses music from all over the world. She's a genius. She uses electro, pop, and contemporary. I want to approach it like Kanno. It would be really cool to create music that incorporates various genres while using traditional Korean instruments.

You are also famous for wearing flashy suits. Is there anything you pay special attention to when choosing clothes before a performance?

I think clothes should always tell a story. Even if you wear clothes from a famous brand, you should tell your own story, not the brand. You can actually do that. The first thing I see is the silhouette. The silhouette has a direct impact on changing the mood and sometimes even determines the attitude on stage.

How does that change?

For example, if you wear a jacket with very wide shoulders, you will look confident and confident.
I'm going to make a pop gesture. Conversely, if you wear clothes that stick to your shoulders, you will be a little more approachable and give a friendly feeling. The weight or atmosphere of the fabric changes my movement. That movement is very important because it influences my attitude toward my fans. If I wear four suits in a performance, it would be because I want to tell a different story each time.

It's a very practical story. So, what about when you usually go shopping?

If I had to give someone advice, I'd say quality first. Regardless of gender or style, quality is important.
Whether it's a rock star or an athlete, the quality of the clothes never lies. Second, I want to tell you not to be afraid to create your own dress code. What if you have clothes you really like but are on a tight budget? Save the money you can earn and try on clothes made with the material you want.

It's like a superhero suit story.

People say appearances don't matter, but that's nonsense. Appearance is the first door to a person. There are far more important things than looks. But people look at your appearance, recognize you as the first person, and judge your first impression. It's not about money or body shape. It's about how you want to appear in the world and what you want to convey.

I am now completely liberated. At the time, I was too young and didn't know how to answer. I just kept my mouth shut. I like that I don't have to be called by any formula now. I think I've created my own language, and I've literally become myself. It's horrible to compare yourself to someone and be told 'what kind of someone'. It's like the world has changed. In the past, when someone appeared, it seemed like they liked to put them in the field and define them like, "Who is the second person?" It's not like that anymore.
I think there are things I realized while the world was changing like that.
There are things to protect while doing music. First of all, you must have your own world. Then people will accept that music for real. It should also have depth. Within a musician's world, there must be many layers. You have to constantly make music and you have to stand on stage. I think performance is the language of the artist.

Mika is often referred to as a 'pop musician', but you've incorporated elements of various genres such as disco, electronic, and old pop into your music. How do you define Mika's genre for yourself?

I think alternative pop music is also a genre created for people who consume it. Even the artisans can make crafts as if they were handmade one by one. I make songs by going back and forth between symphony orchestra and electronic pop.

From the first album <Life In Cartoon Motion> to the 5th album <My Name Is Michael Holbrook>, I think all the albums are Mika's autobiography. You must have a new album in mind, but I wonder what is the most important thing to Mika right now.

Free. Right now, the topic that I am most preoccupied with is freedom. Not legal freedom, but emotional and spiritual freedom. As a person gets older and gains experience, it may weigh me down. Through that experience, I think about how I can develop and become freer. I am very engrossed in trying to find a way to do that. If you figure that out, I think you can grow old happily.
I get a feeling. ‘Popular Song,’ ‘Relax, Take It Easy,’ and ‘Elle Me Dit’ are considered representative songs.

What do you consider when writing lyrics?

I call that a 'frontal approach'. When writing lyrics, I try to approach the listener directly with the subject rather than image and describe it.
I think I've done a lot of research. It's something a novelist would talk about.
Actually, I like the style of writers who get straight to the point. Ernest Hemingway is like that. Among the musicians is Patti Smith. Patti Smith's song is direct and touching. She likes her way of writing lyrics and I use that way too.

Are there any songs made in a different way?

In the case of 'Blue', I paid more attention to the image. Head to key paragraphs through huge images. And then you say, "I will always love you, even your sorrows and hurts." That's when I come in. I think it's really important to connect with the person you're talking to. That's why I like to use 2nd person.

Think about it. If you keep calling 'you' and 'you' in a song, you will definitely feel 'this person is talking to me'.

I think that the reason why so many fans in Korea are 'singing together' is because they felt communication after all. What kind of musician do you want Mika to be remembered as?

'I wish I could say that you're still a creative person. I still want to be remembered as a person who tells stories. The form doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if it's called in a performance hall, as a movie score in a theater, or displayed in a gallery. When people hear my music, they'll say, 'Oh, I've stepped into Mika's world. I want to create a world where you can feel comfortable as if you came home. I hope that when enough time has passed to look back on the present, I and the fans will change a lot.

Because people who change are creative.

That's a cool standard. Then, what kind of musician does Mika think is a good musician?

I think good musicians are musicians who make music that listeners can fully accept as their own story. A musician is someone who can make music bigger than himself. It's a grandiose story, but it may be easy for someone.
It must mean that he is a musician who is remembered for his music rather than his name.
That's right, look at Pavarotti. Pavarotti was a rugby player and loved tennis and pasta all his life. He didn't even know how to read sheet music. That's right.

This interview is so heartwarming to see! He never fails to show how grateful he is to his fans. Also his appreciation for fanactions and him mentioning that it’s a tradition going on from the beginning of his career, I’ve never considered that this truly is something unique and I love that about this Fanclub! 최선의 미카

7년 만에 돌아온 미카가 한국에 남기고 간 것들.

드디어 7년 만에 한국에 돌아왔어요. 감회가 남다를 것 같습니다.

마냥 기쁘죠. 얼마나 상상하던 일인데요. 원래는 2020년에 와야 했어요. 단독 콘서트를 열기로 했는데 코로나19로 취소됐어요. 세계적으로 바이러스가 퍼지던 때라 취소 결정을 내리기까지 정말 어려웠습니다. 전례 없는 일이었으니까요. 저뿐만 아니라 모두가 불안했을 테고요. 그렇게 7년이 지난 거죠. 사실 ‘서울재즈페스티벌 2023’에서 공연 요청을 했을 때 고민이 앞섰어요. 새 앨범이 나온 것도 아닌데 내가 지금 뭘 보여줄 수 있을까 싶었거든요.

그래도 한국에 왔네요. 이번에도 관객의 호응은 엄청났고요.

맞아요. 한참 고민하다 결론을 내렸어요. ‘그냥 하자. 한국 팬들을 너무 오랫동안 못 봤다.’ 7년 만에 한국에 왔는데 굉장히 놀랐어요. 모두가 더 강해졌다고 느꼈거든요. 그동안 우리가 함께 성장했구나. 감정적으로도 더 성숙해졌구나. 무대 위에서 느낄 수 있었습니다.

다른 나라에서 공연을 마친 다음 날 아침은 특별할 것 같습니다. 오늘은 일어나서 어떤 노래를 들었나요?

어제 잘 때는 빗소리를 틀어놓고 잤어요. 아침에는 세르지우 멘지스(Sérgio Mendes)의 음악을 들었습니다. 오늘 서울재즈페스티벌에서 세르지우 멘지스의 무대가 있어서요. 마침 오늘 비가 오네요. 비 오는 서울에서 세르지우 멘지스의 공연이라니. 완벽하네요.

이번 공연에서 한국 팬을 위해 꼭 들려주고 싶은 노래가 있었나요?

‘Good Guys’는 꼭 불러야겠다고 생각했어요. 한국 팬들이 예전처럼 너그럽게, 아주 큰 목소리로 따라 불러준다면 ‘Good Guys’를 꼭 부르겠다고 다짐했어요. ‘Good Guys’는 앨범에 수록된 버전보다 라이브로 불렀을 때 더 에너지가 넘치는 곡이거든요.

어제는 무대에서 태극기와 호랑이 탈을 선보여서 화제가 됐어요. 직접 준비해온 것인가요?

그럼요. 무대의상과 장치는 전부 다 새롭게 제작했어요. 제게는 아티스트들로 구성된 소규모 특수제작팀이 있어요. 무대의상으로는 발렌티노 쿠튀르 제품과 저희 의상팀이 만든 의상을 함께 착용합니다. 저는 패션을 사랑하지만 공연할 때 입는 옷은 패션이 아닌 공연의 일부가 되어야 한다고 생각해요. 말씀하신 호랑이 탈은 이탈리아 디자이너의 작품이고, 태극기는 팬이 만들어준 거예요. 태극기에는 하트 형태의 태극 문양이 있는데 그 가운데 저의 ‘M’ 로고가 새겨져 있어요.

한국을 자주 찾는 편인데 방문 시 꼭 먹는 음식이 있나요?

치킨이죠. 한국 프라이드치킨은 최고니까요. 그리고 잡채. 치킨이랑 잡채는 맥주와 가장 잘 어울리는 음식이라고 생각합니다. 정말 정말 정말 최고예요. 보통 외국 아티스트들이 한국에 오면 코리안 바비큐 많이 먹잖아요? 그것도 좋아요. 장점은 파무침과 채소를 곁들여서 먹을 수 있다는 것이에요.

미카의 한국 사랑은 유명합니다. 한 인터뷰에서 “한국은 나의 커리어와 음악 세계관에서 아주 중요한 나라”라고 했고요. 한국에서의 경험이 영향을 미친 곡이 있을까 궁금했어요.

이 질문에는 아주 솔직하게 답변해야겠네요. 처음 한국에 와서 노래 불렀을 때 팬들의 반응을 보고 깨달은 것이 있어요. 음악에서 언어는 중요한 것이 아니구나. 곡의 분위기나 에너지가 중요하다는 사실을 알게 됐어요. 그 후로 ‘다른 언어로 노래를 만들 수 있겠다’ ‘어떤 언어로 쓰든 나의 곡이기만 하면 된다’는 용기를 얻었고요. 그래서 프랑스어로 곡을 썼어요. 중요한 건 언어가 아니라 ‘나다움’이니까요. 이 노래는 한국에 가서 불러야 한다고 생각하면서 만들었어요.

만일 한국을 주제로 곡을 쓴다면 어떤 노래가 나올까요?

확실치는 않지만 에너지로 가득 차고 멜로디가 많은 곡이 되지 않을까요? 다양한 멜로디를 섞을 것 같아요. 일본에 유명한 영화음악가이자 팝 작곡가가 있어요. 칸노 요코라는 뮤지션인데 <카우보이 비밥> OST를 만들었어요. 칸노의 음악을 들어보면 전 세계 음악을 정말 절묘하게 포괄하고 있어요. 천재죠. 일렉트로, 팝, 컨템퍼러리를 모두 활용하거든요. 저도 칸노처럼 접근해보고 싶어요. 한국의 전통악기를 쓰면서 다양한 장르를 녹여낸 음악을 만든다면 정말 멋질 거예요.

화려한 수트를 즐겨 입는 것으로도 유명한데, 공연에 앞서 옷을 고를 때 특별히 신경 쓰는 부분이 있나요?

옷은 항상 이야기를 전해야 한다고 생각해요. 유명 브랜드의 옷을 입더라도 그 브랜드가 아니라 자신의 스토리를 전달해야 해요. 실제로 그렇게 할 수 있고요. 제가 가장 먼저 보는 것은 실루엣입니다. 실루엣은 무드를 바꾸는 데 직접적인 영향을 끼쳐요. 때로는 무대에서의 태도까지 결정짓죠.

이를테면 어떻게 바뀌나요?

예를 들어 어깨가 아주 넓은 재킷을 입는다면 당당하고 팝한 몸짓을 할 거예요. 반대로 어깨가 달라붙는 옷을 입는다면 조금 더 다가가기 쉽고 상냥한 느낌을 주겠죠. 원단이 갖고 있는 무게감이나 분위기가 저의 움직임을 바꾸거든요. 그 움직임은 팬들에게 다가가는 저의 태도를 좌우하기 때문에 무척 중요합니다. 만일 공연에서 정장을 네 벌 입는다면 매번 다른 스토리를 전하고 싶어서일 거예요.

대단히 실용적인 이야기네요. 그러면 평소 쇼핑할 때는 어떤가요?

만일 제가 누군가에게 조언해야 한다면 첫째로 퀄리티를 따져보라고 하고 싶네요. 성별이나 스타일링에 상관없이 퀄리티가 중요합니다. 록스타가 입든, 운동선수가 입든 옷의 퀄리티는 절대 거짓말하지 않으니까요. 두 번째로는 나만의 드레스 코드를 만드는 걸 두려워하지 말라고 하고 싶어요. 만일 정말 마음에 드는 옷이 있는데 예산이 부족하다? 그럼 여러 벌 살 돈을 아껴서 내가 원하는 소재로 옷을 만들어 입어보세요.

꼭 슈퍼히어로 수트 이야기 같아요.

사람들은 겉모습이 중요하지 않다고 하는데 그건 말도 안 되는 얘기예요. 겉모습은 그 사람에게 들어가는 첫 번째 문이잖아요. 외모보다 훨씬 중요한 것이 있죠. 하지만 사람들은 외모를 보고 처음 당신이라는 사람을 인식하고 첫인상을 판단하죠. 돈이나 체형의 문제가 아니에요. 세상에 어떤 모습으로 비칠지, 무엇을 전달하고 싶은지에 관한 문제죠.

2007년 첫 정규앨범 <Life In Cartoon Motion>을 내고 ‘제2의 프레디 머큐리’로 불렸습니다. 커리어가 쌓일수록 이런 수식은 족쇄처럼 느껴질 것 같아요. ‘Grace Kelly’를 통해 직접 그 마음을 전한 바 있고요. 지금 가장 듣기 좋은 수식이 있나요?

이제 완전히 해방됐어요. 당시에는 저도 어려서 어떻게 대답해야 할지 몰랐거든요. 그냥 입 다물고 있었죠. 지금은 어떤 수식으로도 불리지 않아도 돼서 좋아요. 저만의 언어를 만들었고, 말 그대로 저 자신이 됐다고 생각해요. 누군가와 비교당하면서 ‘어떠어떠한 누구’라는 말을 듣는 건 끔찍해요. 세상이 바뀐 것 같아요. 예전에 누가 등장하면 “제2의 누구다” 식으로 틀에 넣고 규정하기를 좋아했던 것 같거든요. 이제는 그러지 않아요.

그렇게 세상이 바뀌는 동안 깨달은 점도 있을 것 같아요.

음악을 하면서 지켜야 할 것이 있어요. 가장 먼저 자기만의 세계를 가져야 해요. 그러면 사람들은 그 음악을 진짜로 받아들여줄 겁니다. 깊이도 있어야죠. 뮤지션의 세계 안에는 수많은 층이 있어야 합니다. 끊임없이 음악을 만들어야 하고요. 그리고 무대에 서야죠. 공연은 아티스트만의 언어라고 생각합니다.

흔히 미카는 ‘팝 뮤지션’으로 통하지만, 디스코, 일렉트로닉, 올드팝 등 다양한 장르의 요소를 음악에 녹여냈잖아요. 스스로는 미카의 장르를 어떻게 정의 내리나요?

얼터너티브 팝. 팝 음악은 소비하는 사람을 위해서 만들어진 장르라고도 생각해요. 그조차 장인이 공예품을 한 땀 한 땀 수작업하듯 만들 수 있습니다. 저는 심포니 오케스트라와 일렉트로닉 팝을 오가면서 곡을 만들어요. 아프리카 악기를 쓸 수도 있고요. 그럴 때 자유롭다고 느껴요.

첫 앨범 <Life In Cartoon Motion>부터 5집 <My Name Is Michael Holbrook>까지 모든 앨범은 미카의 자서전이라고 생각합니다. 새 앨범을 염두에 두고 있을 텐데, 그런 미카에게 지금 가장 중요한 것은 무엇인지 궁금합니다.
자유죠. 지금 제가 가장 몰두하는 주제는 자유예요. 법적인 자유가 아니라 정서적이고 영적인 면에서 느끼는 자유. 사람이 나이를 먹고 경험을 쌓을수록 그것이 날 더 무겁게 할 수도 있어요. 저는 그 경험을 통해 어떻게 하면 내가 더 발전하고 자유로워질 수 있을지 생각해요. 그 방법을 찾으려고 굉장히 몰두하고 있어요. 그걸 알아낸다면 행복하게 나이 들 수 있다고 생각해요.

가사를 읽다 보면 독백이라기보다는 말을 거는 듯한 느낌을 받습니다. 대표곡으로 꼽히는 ‘Popular Song’ ‘Relax, Take It Easy’ ‘Elle Me Dit’이 그렇고요. 가사를 쓸 때 어떤 점을 고려하나요?

저는 그걸 ‘정면적인 접근(Frontal Approach)’이라고 불러요. 저는 작사할 때 어떤 주제를 이미지화하고 묘사하기보다, 그 주제를 가지고 청자에게 직접적으로 다가가려고 해요. 어떠한 상황이나 감정을 정면으로 응시하려고 하고요.

청자가 온전하게 자신의 이야기로 받아들일 수 있는 음악을 만드는 뮤지션이 좋은 뮤지션이라고 생각합니다. 자신보다 음악을 더 큰 존재로 만들 수 있는 사람이 뮤지션이겠죠. 거창한 이야기지만 누군가에게는 쉬운 일일 수도 있어요. 정작 뮤지션 본인은 어떻게 했는지도 모른 채 그렇게 될 수도 있으니까요.

I think clothes should always tell a story. Even if you wear clothes from a famous brand, you have to tell your own story, not the brand. You can actually do that. The first thing I see is the silhouette. The silhouette has a direct impact on changing the mood. Sometimes it even determines the attitude on stage.

How does that change?

For example, if you wear a jacket with very wide shoulders, you will make confident and pop gestures. Conversely, if you wear clothes that stick to your shoulders, you will be a little more approachable and give a friendly feeling. The weight or atmosphere of the fabric changes my movement. That movement is very important because it influences the way I approach my fans. If I wear four suits at a performance, it would be because I want to tell a different story each time.

It's a very practical story. So, what about when you usually go shopping?

If I had to give someone advice, I'd say quality first. Regardless of gender or style, quality matters. Whether worn by a rock star or an athlete, the quality of clothes never lies. I am now completely liberated. At the time, I was too young and didn't know how to answer. I just kept my mouth shut. It's nice that I don't have to be called by any formula now. I think I created my own language and literally became myself. It's terrible to be compared to someone and hear 'what kind of someone'. I think the world has changed. In the past, when someone appeared, I think I liked to put it in a frame and define it as “the second person.” I don't do that anymore.

I call it the ‘Frontal Approach’. When I write lyrics, I try to approach the listener directly with the subject, rather than image and describe a subject. I try to face any situation or emotion head-on.

드디어 7년 만에 한국에 돌아왔어요. 감회가 남다를 것 같습니다.

마냥 기쁘죠. 얼마나 상상하던 일인데요. 원래는 2020년에 와야했어요. 단독
콘서트를 열기로 했는데 코로나19로 취소됐어요. 세계적으로 바이러스가 퍼지던 때라 취소결정을 내리기까지 정말 어려웠습니다. 전례 없는 일이었으니까요.

저뿐만 아니라 모두가 불안했을테고요. 그렇게 7년이 지난 거죠. 사실 '서울재즈페스티벌 2023'에서 공연 요청을 했을 때 고민이 앞섰어요. 새 앨범이 나온 것도 아닌데 내가 지금 뭘 보여줄 수 있을까 싶었거든요

그래도 한국에 왔네요. 이번에도 관객의 호응은 엄청났고요.

맞아요 한참 고민하다 결론을 내렸어요.

그냥 하자. 한국 팬들을 너무 오랫동안 못 봤다. 7년만에 한국에 왔는데 굉장히 놀랐어요 모두가 더 강해졌다고 느꼈거든요.

그동안 우리가 함께 성장했구나.

감정적으로도 더 성숙해졌구나.

다른나라에서 공연을 마친 다음 날 아침은 특별할 것 같습니다. 오늘은 일어나서 어떤 노래를 들었나요?

어제 잘 때는 빗소리를 틀어놓고 잤어요.

아침에는 세르지우 멘지스(Sergio Mendes)의 음악을 들었습니다. 오늘 서울재즈페스티벌에서 세르지우 멘지스의 무대가 있어서요. 마침 오늘 비가오네요. 비 오는 서울에서 세르지우 멘지스의 공연이라니. 완벽하네요.

이번 공연에서 한국팬을 위해 꼭 들려주고 싶은 노래가 있었나요?

예를 들어 어깨가 아주 넓은 재킷을 입는다면 당당하고

첫 앨범 <Life In Cartoon Motion>부터 5집 <My Name Is Michael Holbrook>까지 모든 앨범은 미카의 자서전이라고 생각합니다. 새 앨범을 염두에 두고 있을 텐데, 그런 미카에게 지금 가장 중요한 것은 무엇인지 궁금합니다.

자유죠. 지금 제가 가장 몰두하는 주제는 자유예요. 법적인 자유가 아니라 정서적이고 영적인 면에서 느끼는 자유. 사람이 나이를 먹고 경험을 쌓을수록 그것이 날 더 무겁게 할 수도 있어요. 저는 그 경험을 통해 어떻게 하면 내가 더 발전하고 자유로워질 수 있을지 생각해요. 그 방법을 찾으려고 굉장히 몰두하고 있어요. 그걸 알아낸다면 행복하게 나이들수있다고 생각해요가사를 읽다보면 독백이라기보다는 말을 거는 듯한

가사를 쓸 때 어떤 점을 고려하나요?

저는 그걸 정면적인 접근(Frontal Approach)'이라고불러요 저는 작사할때 어떤 주제를 이미지화하고묘사하기보다 그 주제를 가지고 청자에게 직접적으로다가가려고 해요 어떠한 상황이나 감정을 정면으로응시하려고 하고요

정말 많은 연구해왔다는 생각이 드네요 소설가가이야기할 것 같은 내용이에요.

실제로 저는 단숨에 핵심을 찌르는 스타일의 작가를 좋아해요. 어니스트 헤밍웨이가 그렇죠. 뮤지션중에는 패티 스미스가 있어요. 패티 스미스의 곡은 직설적이면서도 감동적이에요. 그의 작사방식을 좋아하고 저도 그 방법을 쓰고 있어요.

다른 방식으로 만든 곡도 있나요?
