Festivals |

Colorée, décalée, explosive et surtout joyeuse, voici ce que la performance de MIKA promet d’être aux Francofolies de Spa ce jeudi 20 juillet. Attendu depuis 2020, il enflammera pour la toute première fois la scène Pierre Rapsat. Depuis 2007, la star internationale fait toujours l’actualité. Et ce encore plus dernièrement grâce à son récent duo avec Vianney ‘Keep it Simple’. Celui qui occupe une place bien à lui dans le monde de la pop a enchaîné les tubes planétaires. Voici cinq titres immanquables de l’artiste libano-americano-britannique.

 

‘Relax, Take It Easy’ (2006)

Bien avant sa percée avec ‘Grace Kelly’ en 2007, Mika avait enregistré un premier single d’une durée de sept minutes. ‘Relax, Take It Easy’ sort en Angleterre en 2006. Inspirée par la mélodie de ‘(I Just) Died in Your Arms’ (1986) du groupe britannique Cutting Crew et par l’intro de ‘Spacer’ de Sheila, la chanson a été écrite pendant les attentats de Londres en 2005. En route vers le studio d’enregistrement, dans le métro, une annonce oblige tous les passager à quitter le véhicule immédiatement. D’ailleurs, il commence le morceau en ces mots : « I took a ride to the end of the line » (« Je suis allé au bout de la ligne », en français). Il continue pour se consoler avec « Relax, take it easy, cos’ there’s nothing that we can do » (« Relaxe, prends le bien puisqu’on ne peut rien y faire », en français). Comme à son habitude, les paroles ne sont pas explicites, elles peuvent être interprétées différemment dans d’autres contextes. Aujourd’hui encore, personne n’a oublié son refrain entêtant et sa voix étonnement aiguë.

 

‘Grace Kelly’ (2007)

Si ‘Relax, Take It Easy’ est le premier morceau de Mika, ‘Grace Kelly’ le propulse sur la scène internationale. Le single se classe numéro 1 dans de nombreux pays. Même s’il fait directement référence à l’actrice américaine Grace Kelly, qui devint Princesse de Monaco, la chanson n’évoque pas la vie de cette dernière, mais plutôt celle des musiciens qui essaient de changer leur personnalité pour devenir célèbre. Avant d’être connu, le chanteur a souvent été confronté à des remarques désobligeantes sur son style ou sa manière de chanter. Le directeur d’une compagnie de disques lui avait même demandé de ressembler plus à Craig David ou Robbie Williams. Dans les paroles « So I tried a little Freddie » (« Donc j’ai essayé un petit peu de Freddie ») en référence à Freddie Mercury. Il y exprime qu’il était prêt à faire de tels efforts pour plaire, quitte à ne plus être lui-même.

 

‘Love Today’ (2007)

Encore un titre qui figure sur son premier album ‘Life in Cartoon Motion’, la chanson fait un carton et est nominée en tant que ‘Meilleure Chanson Dance’ aux Grammy Awards 2008. Dans le clip, il chante avec ses musiciens devant un écran qui retransmet des images psychédéliques. Un morceau qui respire la joie de vivre lorsque tout roule pour l’artiste. ‘Love Today’ aurait été écrit après une nuit d’amour. Complètement euphorique de la veille et sur son petit nuage, il décrit ce que tout le monde recherche dans la vie : aimer et être aimé en retour.

 

‘Elle me dit’ (2011)

Le single s’inscrit dans la lignée de ses précédents succès, il mélange subtilement le piano à des sons électro. Cependant, pour le première fois, il chante en français. Lors d’un concert Mika avait expliqué la chanson parle de « toutes les choses horribles qu’une mère peut dire à son fils pour qu’il parte de chez elle ». Grâce à elle, il montre son lien particulier avec un public francophone. Dans le clip, ce sont essentiellement des acteurs français qui jouent. Fanny Ardant y incarne la mère de l’artiste même si Mika n’apparait à aucun moment dans la vidéo. Il existe également une version en anglais, intitulée ‘She tells me’ après que les fans du chanteur lui ai demandé.

 

Sanremo (2019)

Lorsque le clip de Sanremo sort, il annonce son dernier album ‘My Name Is Michael Holbrook’ (son nom civil) en 2019. Après quatre ans d’absence, il propose des titres personnels, un peu comme s’il s’ouvrait dans cet opus. 'Sanremo' parle d’évasion vers un endroit beau et romantique, en l’occurrence la ville italienne. Il s’agit d’une chanson positive qui évoque le pouvoir de l’amour et ce besoin de vivre dans un endroit beau et magique où tout est possible et où l’on peut être soi-même.

Après écoute, on imagine, comme à l’habitude du chanteur, un clip coloré et saturé. Mais il n’en est rien. La vidéo est tournée en noir et blanc, évoquant une autre époque. Elle apporte un message plus dramatique au morceau. Dès les premières secondes, le ton est donné. Un dialogue se fait entendre sur le « danger que représente l’homosexualité dans la société ». Plutôt que de faire une ode à la ville italienne, le chanteur dénonce les violences apportées à la communauté LGBTQ dans une Italie répressive. Pour l’artiste, il est désormais plus que nécessaire d’incorporer les thèmes queer dans son travail.

On ne cessera jamais de répéter le talent du gaillard pour aller chercher chaque spectateur au milieu de la foule. Mika donne et se donne, alternant ses tubes et chansons moins connues. Le tout fonctionnant de pair, le public répondant autant sur chaque morceau. Soulever une foule, Mika connaît.

 

On retiendra deux beaux moments. Le chanteur aux multiples nationalités propose au public spadois un titre inédit, extrait de son futur album en français, qui sortira à la rentrée. Au milieu de la foule, cerné par une dizaine de caméras, Mika filme ce moment pour bientôt nous le proposer sur ses réseaux. Personne n’a jamais entendu ce titre, C’est la vie. 30 secondes plus tard, la foule danse et reprend en chœur le refrain. Basique mais très efficace. Et à coup sûr bientôt dans vos playlists radio…

 

Arrive Relax take it easy et Mika, d’aller rechercher Juliette Armanet dans les coulisses pour la projeter sur scène avec lui.

 

Deux artistes qui dansent de concert avant de s’installer pour quelques accords au piano, improvisés pour Juliette. Elle se demande bien ce qu’elle fait là. Mika : "C’est la pire chose au monde que l’on puisse faire à un artiste, j’espère qu’elle me pardonnera". Elle : "Mais oui, c’est charmant…"

 

Minuit trente, Mika termine son show torse nu – alors qu’il fait 10 degrés – puis coiffé d’une tête de tigre pour un délire de fin de set qui s’achève avec We are golden et Love today.

Confettis et serpentins. Bouquet final et explosion. Dans la foule, on entend : "purée, c’était génial… Quel artiste… C’était dingue…"

 

Cette première journée aux Francos sonnait déjà comme l’apothéose du dernier jour… Vivement la suite mais Soprano, BigFlo et Oli, Kendji ou Florent Pagny devront se démener pour parvenir au même niveau.

Confetti and streamers. Final bouquet and explosion. In the crowd, we hear: "mash, it was great... What an artist... It was crazy..."

 

This first day at the Francos already sounded like the apotheosis of the last day... Can't wait for the rest but Soprano, BigFlo and Oli, Kendji or Florent Pagny will have to struggle to reach the same level.

A little update on this: I asked Mika about it in Tarvisio and he said it's for a documentary (about him) for German TV. That's all he seemed to know (or was allowed to tell). A German fan who was in Marostica got interviewed by the TV team, and they told her it's for the weekdaily boulevard show "Leute Heute". They do little reports of a few minutes maximum (the show is just 10 minutes every day), so that doesn't sound as exciting as the "documentary" Mika talked about, but I guess it's more realistic for German TV. What I could imagine, but that's pure speculation, is that it might be a little report about him on the occasion of his 40th bday. As I thought, the ZDF report was aired today, with the headline "Mika turns 40". They gave a little summary of his career and of course talked over his voice in the interviews, as always on German TV.  He just said something like that he wants to see the places he visits and that he started early with performing on stage and earning money gave him a sense of value, and then that he did TV in Italy, France, now UK, and "maybe maybe" some time also in Germany. I won't hold my breath for that, but it was nice to see him on German TV again today.

Mika vecht met Grace Kelly voor zijn identiteit

 

"I could be brown, I could be blue, I could be violet sky", halverwege de 00's aast Mika op een platencontract. Maar als hij wordt afgewezen vanwege zijn eigenzinnige stijl, schrijft de jonge zanger als protest Grace Kelly.

In 2006 brengt Mika zijn debuutsingle Relax, Take It Easy uit. In 2012 vertelt de Libanese zanger tegen BBC Radio 1 dat hij heel graag een contract wil, omdat hij van zijn muziek wil kunnen leven. Maar de muzikale toekomst van de dan 23-jarige artiest is nog niet zeker.

 

Als hij aanklopt bij platenmaatschappijen is hij "niet indie genoeg" maar ook "niet pop genoeg". De labels dringen erop aan dat Mika zijn sound aanpast. Qua uiterlijk en geluid willen de ze dat de zanger zich meer gaat vormen naar Craig David, die op dat moment mateloos populair is in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

 

Grace Kelly

Teleurgesteld, boos én geïnspireerd keert Mika huiswaarts, waar hij zijn frustraties uit in Grace Kelly. "Ik schreef het liedje op en zei ermee: Ik kan elke gewenste kleur hebben. Wat wil je in vredesnaam dat ik ben?" Volgens de zanger weten de labels ook niet wat ze precies van hem willen. "Jij weet niet wat je wilt, dus ik kan elke kleur van de regenboog zijn." En met die gedachte kiest hij Grace Kelly uit; Mika kan zich voordoen als wie dan ook, inclusief de wereldberoemde actrice en prinses. De Amerikaanse Grace wordt overigens niet alleen in naam gebruikt door Mika, ook haar stem is op het nummer te horen. De audiofragmenten zijn afkomstig van haar optreden in de film The Country Girl uit 1954.

 

De gewaagde zet van Mika blijkt een gouden greep. Met Grace Kelly scoort de singer-songwriter een nummer 1-hit in binnen- en buitenland. In december 2007 vertelt de zanger tegen Observer Music Monthly dat het scoren van zo’n gigantische hit "heel onwerkelijk" voelt. "Het is maar een liedje dat ik in mijn kamer heb geschreven." Maar dan wel 'maar een liedje' dat hem ironisch genoeg toch dat felbegeerde contract bezorgt.

De videoclip van Grace Kelly wordt geregisseerd door Sophie Muller. Zij werkt eerder samen met onder andere Gwen Stefani en Beyoncé. In de clip zingt Mika het nummer voor het jonge nichtje van de regisseur, die de tekst van Grace Kelly voor haar rekening neemt. Misschien herken je haar niet meteen, maar het meisje op de piano is Holly Mae Muller. En die kun je dan weer kennen van haar deelname aan het Eurovisie Songfestival namens het Verenigd Koninkrijk in Liverpool.

 

Mika in de Top 2000

Ook in 2022 staat Grace Kelly in de Top 2000. Het nummer was goed voor de 1446e plek. Grace Kelly is daarmee maar liefst 140 plekken gestegen ten opzichte van het jaar daarvoor. Bekijk in de statistieken hoe het nummer door de jaren heen door de lijst is gestegen en gedaald.

As I thought, the ZDF report was aired today, with the headline "Mika turns 40". They gave a little summary of his career and of course talked over his voice in the interviews, as always on German TV.  He just said something like that he wants to see the places he visits and that he started early with performing on stage and earning money gave him a sense of value, and then that he did TV in Italy, France, now UK, and "maybe maybe" some time also in Germany. I won't hold my breath for that, but it was nice to see him on German TV again today.

Crank up the sound and celebrate some of the greatest LGBTQ+ hits from the most recent decade.

 

Pop culture guru David Ferguson is back to share some of the best queer anthems from the 2010s. After curating lists of his favourite ’80s, ’90s and ’00s hits, it’s time to look at the more recent past and revisit some beloved chart toppers.

There’s been a bit of a gap since my last one of these, but the completist in me was always going to do a 2010s one. While this instalment has some quite sad songs, I think I picked some good ones, and hope you enjoy.

 

‘Gave It All Away’ – Boyzone (2010)

 

 

A sombre start. From Boyzone’s fourth studio album, Brother, this was the first single released by the group after the death of Stephen Gately. The song, written by MIKA, was recorded in 2008, so features both Gately and Ronan Keating on lead vocals.

It wasn’t released at the time for unknown reasons, but MIKA suggested releasing it as a tribute after Gately’s death. Garnering 3 million views on YouTube, the music video features the band reminiscing about their friend along with old clips of them together. The single reached number one in Ireland.

10 unforgettable queer anthems from the 2000s

 

Looking for some nostalgic playlist inspiration? Here are some of the most unforgettable LGBTQ+ tunes from the noughties.

 

Pop culture guru David Ferguson is back to share some nostalgic anthems from the 2000s music scene. After curating lists of his favourite ’80s and ’90s queer tunes, it’s time to dive into the first decade of this century with a whole host of unforgettable hits. 

We continue our adventures through queer music and time with the 2000s or the noughties, as some people attempted to refer to them. I was quite surprised at how easily I assembled this list, and I actually had to drop a few songs because I was determined to have ten (or less).

Here are my favourites from the 2000s, with the vague promise of the ‘10s and ‘20s to come. Also, potential earworms ahead.

 

‘Crying at the Discoteque’ – Alcazar (2000)

 

‘Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word’ – Blue featuring Elton John (2002)

 

‘Bad Day’ – R.E.M. (2003)

 

‘Amazing’ – George Michael (2004)

 

‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ – Scissor Sisters (2006)

 

‘Grace Kelly’ – Mika (2007)

 

 

‘Grace Kelly’ is the lead single from Lebanese-born UK singer Mika’s debut album, Life In Cartoon Motion (2007). The song is titled after the Academy-Award-winning actress, and her voice is used in the song (from the movie The Country Girl). It was inspired by a bad experience with a music executive. The lyric “I tried a little Freddie” refers to Freddie Mercury, who people have compared Mika to.

 

It is about how the industry wanted to mould him into something else, and him saying he could pretend to be whoever he wanted. Some of the songs on the album were sexually ambiguous, which led to questions about Mika’s sexuality. He declined to label himself for years before describing himself as gay in a 2012 interview. Dans cet échange avec Femmes du Maroc, le petit prince de la pop nous parle de la place de la femme dans la société mais aussi dans sa vie et nous rappelle que nous sommes tous égaux.

Mika était l'objet du portrait de «50'Inside», le samedi 9 septembre 2023.

L'occasion pour l'artiste de se confier sur son enfance et notamment sur le harcèlement scolaire qu'il a vécu.

 

Mika est de retour avec un nouvel album. L'artiste de 40 ans a dévoilé le 1er septembre dernier un premier single pop baptisé C'est la vie. Huit jours plus tard, il était l'objet du por- trait de l'émission «<50' Inside»>, sur TF1. L'occasion pour lui de faire sa promotion, mais aussi d'aborder des sujets qui lui tiennent à cœur.

 

Interrogé sur son enfance, Mika s'est rappelé d'une ren- trée scolaire particulière à Londres. En effet, sa famille a quitté Paris pour la capitale londonienne lorsqu'il était âgé de huit ans. "C'est l'un des premiers jours à l'école. Je suis en short rose avec des petits pois, avec une chemise que j'avais choisie, et je pense que j'avais même un nœud papillon" s'est-il souvenu avec nostalgie.

 

Mika a été victime de harcèle- ment de la part d'élèves et d'une professeure

 

Face à sa tenue pour le moins originale, Mika avait rapide- ment été la cible de ses cama- rades. Il a expliqué : "J'é tais ridicule à travers leurs yeux, mais aussi parce que je pense que c'était différent".

Le petit garçon avait rapidement été victime de harcèlement sco- laire, un sujet qui le touche encore aujourd'hui. J'en ai souffert beaucoup pendant mon enfance. Surtout quand les problèmes ont commencé non seulement avec les gens autour de moi dans la classe, mais aussi avec le professeur" a-t-il indiqué.

 

L'interprète de Lollipop avait subi les remarques de sa professeure, sans se rendre compte qu'il s'agissait de har- cèlement. Il a confié à ce pro- pos: "Quand c'est quelqu'un qui est en position de pouvoir et d'autorité, tu ne le vois pas comme du harcèlement. Tu le vois comme si vraiment c'était ta faute".

Face à cette situation, Mika s'était alors renfermé sur lui- même, jusqu'à développer une sorte de dyslexie. Un trouble qui a aujourd'hui des répercus- sions sur sa vie puisqu'il est incapable de lire correctement la musique.
