  1. I think we love to be asked In old formal English, we would have said 'The people with whom I worked' so that we didn't end a sentence with a preposition, but hardly anyone speaks, or even writes like that now. Yes and, oh gosh, yes!!!!
  2. Your dress is fabulous and you look gorgeous in it. Is the cocktail le vin d'honneur? The venue for the dinner looks beautiful too. Will le futur marié wear la jaquette et un chapeau haut de forme? And, will you have l'enterrement de vie de jeune fille?
  3. I was looking at your photos this morning on FB. I love the tables and the colour scheme. Absolutely beautiful
  4. The guest list wasn't supposed to be this big. Nell's fiancé has a tiny family but Nell grew up with close contact with all her cousins and so wants them (but not 2nd cousins) There won't be any children because there are only 2 (my son should have his second by the wedding!) but they aren't bringing them. And she has friends from growing up here, friends from Uni and friends from the army where she works now. Well, I didn't have flowers because I'd read a book called Divine Rights Trip where the girl interlocked fingers with her boy. I thought that was so romantic and it would seem that Nell has been more affected by my choices than I'd realised. When we stood together to be married we held hands like that and as we turned to face each other my right and his left hand kept hold. It was actually rather nice. I haven't regretted many of the decisions I made. If I had my time again . . . I wouldn't let my dad invite his cousins (although I gave in because he was footing the bill,) I wouldn't have believed the venue when they said there would be plenty of food from the main buffet for the evening guests and I would have had a fringe, but I didn't know it would suit me till several years later! I've not looked at the actual distance but it's a two hour journey on the motorway for us, nearly as long for Nell, herself, 3+ for my sisters in Lincolnshire and Sussex, a bit less for his family and a heck of a long way for my son in Germany! Edit: Distance is 157 miles (253 km)
  5. Hi :)

I get the impression that the contraption isn't as common as I'd thought. My French teacher hadn't heard of it. Never mind; we're going on to rivers and streams next!

    But thanks for the offer.

  6. The only problem so far is that she doesn't want to have any guests that she doesn't know; she doesn't want to be introduced on the day, yet she has 3 cousins all of whom have long term partners that she hasn't met. Initially she was being very strict and said she wouldn't invite the partners, but she's relented, so that's 3 more. (And, hopefully, she'll meet them before the big day!) Also the venue isn't nearby - not where we live, not where her friends live and not even near where they live; in her words 'it's equally inconvenient for everyone!' So she's booked a 3pm wedding so that people can travel there on the day. The other thing is that she'd like snow or frost please. And that's going to be tricky. . .
  7. Congratulations Nell's wedding party is creeping above 80, but the venue for the meal is free and the food is 'affordable' (and also, she and her bf are paying most of that bill.) She isn't having flowers - I didn't have a bouquet but the men had buttonholes the same (red) colour as my dress. I plan to drape long tendrils of ivy through her hair, but she's not so keen
  8. Ah! A deserted thread. Still, someone might see it. . . . I'm looking for a link to a photo of something. In France, a wedding photographer often tows a contraption behind his car, which opens and lifts up to make 5 levels for the guests to stand on for photos. I can't seem to find a picture because my French isn't good enough for google.fr Can anyone help please? Or, as I said in the French speaking thread . . .

  10. I had a phone call from a relative to say they'd had a 'keep the date free' card from her. So we have a date and a time, a venue for the wedding and the reception and the skirt part of her outfit. Oh, and a general theme - winter feast/warm & cosy/ candlelit. I'm actually on the MFC atm to research French weddings for my French homework. Apparently, the photographer tows a contraption behind his car which opens out to make 4 or 5 levels and onto which the wedding party clamber. I'd love a photo of one but my search skills on google.fr aren't finding anything. So I'll go and ask in the French speaking thread. . . .
  11. This is a lovely idea for a thread Tegan. Can I join in because my daughter is getting married in December 2013? I've just had my 35th anniversary, but my daughter is picking a few of my decisions and using them for her own wedding. (Also, the first Mika gig I went to was with Nell, so there is an MFC link; we met up with some MFCers on the night) And it was an MFCer (MikaMad) who helped me through a decision Nell made about University and now, her wedding will be in MM's home town! I love this dress!
  12. I'd looked it up on google and knew that couldn't be right, so I asked my French teacher yesterday and she didn't know. Now I can tell her
  13. Hi I saw Ed when he was 14 at my friend's (his aunt and uncle's) wedding anniversary party in Scotland. He was playing guitar with his cousins and my husband was really impressed. When he appeared on Jools I recognised him from his surname (and he looks a lot like my friend) so it's been wonderful to watch his meteoric rise to fame and fortune.
  14. I believe they build for the cold in Scandinavian countries with triple glazing and vast amounts of insulation. My house is 80 years old and no amount of improvement really solves the problem.
  15. I thought I'd never be crazy enough to get involved with anything so mad! (but it seems I am )
  16. I'm number 2816 because I lurked for weeks before I joined . . .
  17. Are there any competitions still on? I've just realised that the anagram one finished before I did and I've already done the Word Search
  18. As someone has said the knife edge ones are about a person's situation - when something is evenly balanced. A knife edge for a president might be the close call in an election; for a drug addict, the knife edge could be what dreadful deed he'll do for his next fix or will he cope. A salver is a posh serving platter, so it's more literal than the others: copper-plated pan? chrome-plated headlamp or bumper on a car and gold-plated jewelry etc So here the president may have to take his country to war (or not) and his corruption may be found out (or not); it's in the balance I'd be inclined towards behaviour for clown like - behave like a fool; not really about the clothes. Appearance is right for doll-like as you said, also with perfectly sweet behaviour. Owl-like: clever, intelligent looking/blinking - as if woken from a deep sleep/large eyes/large specs, I think.
  19. 3 lots of Mika-ness on my TV today: In the morning the new pantene ad & happy ending. Early evening at the end of darts they played Kick Ass and . . . At the end of a program about Blackpool they played the music track from Grace Kelly.
  20. Very funny, very clever song! Happy birthday MFC and MFCers!
  21. In the strictly come dancing results show, they reviewed Lisa Riley's success and played Big Girl. Our it may have been in the last It Takes Two. I watched them on the same night.
  22. Sorry, I've been clicking MQ too much! Love your photos and Saskia's but I've removed them . . . I thought it was really clear - no photos backstage. One of the Munich group took them (knowing she shouldn't) until she was stopped. Would of????? Vicky!!!!! I remember it well and absolutely know that I'd have let the venue staff shuffle us off outside but you - really nicely - stood your ground (and I've learnt a lot from your manner) Proactive it is. Excellent. It's a bit of a pick and mix with the experiences isn't it? Each place is different.
