Since their inception in 1992, the annual Mercury Music Prize awards have set out to reward the best in British music, regardless of genre or style. An independent panel of judges (music industry experts, journalists, record company bosses and the like) selects twelve ‘Albums Of The Year’, before choosing one and announcing the overall winner on the night of the Mercury Music Show.

The 12 nominated albums are:

- Amy Winehouse - Back To Black

- Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare

- Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford - Basquiat Strings

- Bat For Lashes - Fur And Gold

- Dizzee Rascal - Maths And English

- Fionn Regan - The End Of History

- Jamie T - Panic Prevention

- Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future

- Maps - We Can Create

- New Young Pony Club - Fantastic Playroom

- The View - Hats Off To The Buskers

- The Young Knives - Voices Of Animals And Men

I can't believe it either!

Maybe they thought it would be too embarrassing for him to accept a Mercury award...:naughty: :naughty: :naughty:

I hope he will get tons of nominations for the Brit Awards and win a few as well. Also, Grace Kelly would be a good candidate for the Ivor Novello Awards...

I wonder when is that one is announced... perhaps only in spring, after the Brits.

Does anyone know?

well, I like nearly all those acts, but I'm really suprised Mika wasn't on that list.

Arctic Monkeys won last year, and quite rightfully so, I think they were up against the Guillemots and Muse, as well as Hot Chip and a few other acts as well. I like all those acts, but AM a bit more.

I think Amy Winehouse'll probs win, Back to Black was massive, but Arctic Monkeys have a massive chance; they've got tons of fans, and are already really popular.

was Mika in any other categories? or was it just those acts throughout the whole thing?

thats silly.. half of those albums aren't even well known.. whereas quite a lot of mika have heard of mika.. he's too hard to miss anyway

[sorry for the double post]

that's more or less the point of the Mercury awards; aside from a couple, the musicians are not too well known.

It doesn't go too mainstream, aside from a few exceptions
