In an MMMBop - the Hanson thread!

We rounded the last corner, Taylor escorted the mob of fans back to the front entrance of the venue, and talked for a bit about the TOMs shoes again while Isaac and Zac made their way to the front. Then Taylor said that we should all sign “the walk” sheets they had on a table that had appeared in front of the venue, and that we should get our hand stamped because the people who had walked got into the venue before people who didn’t. (The line issues got more complicated later.) At the very end of the walk as Hanson were ready to go inside and get ready for the meet & greets, Taylor had us all yell out “WE TOOK THE WALK!” That was cool. As you’ll see later, Taylor is very into crowd participation, lol.

Some signs that fans made and brought on the walk:

Hanson said goodbye, and thanked us for walking with them. Taylor ended by saying they really feel honored that we chose to go on the walk, and how when they started doing these walks, he was worried they’d be walking alone, and that passersby would turn and wonder what the heck these people were doing talking to themselves with megaphones. Aww, Taylor, he’s adorable. He seemed genuinely surprised--still--that so many people continue to walk with them before every show. Although I think this crowd was one of the biggest they've seen. If you watch the YouTube video I posted the link to in my last post, he keeps commenting on how many of us there are.

Then they were gone, and we began waiting again. The first thing we had to figure out was where to wait in line. Even though we knew Hanson might be wandering back and forth between their tour bus and the venue, we chose to actually get in line. We signed our names on “the walk” sheets, got our hands stamped, and then wandered around the side of the building, found a nice window ledge, and sat down to wait. We had lost track of Jennifer, Raina, and Megan by this point, but Laura was hungry so she decided to buy a piece of pizza, and then I went to look for a bathroom. After we were resituated, Jennifer and Raina found us, and came to sit by us. They had stayed toward the back of the walk, and chatted with Isaac and Zac a bit. (Darnit! If only we had known to do that.) Then they had walked by Kate Voegel’s tour bus and met her. Now Raina had to leave for the meet & greet she had won, so Jennifer sat with us while Raina left.

Not long after this, some security guy from the venue walked down our line asking what kind of tickets we had. I showed him the two printed tickets, and he said that meant we had VIP tickets, and had to wait in a different line around the other side of the building. Apparently by printing my tickets on the computer, we were allowed to go in a line that got inside the venue ahead of the people who did not have printed tickets. Weird.

It was sad to say goodbye to Jennifer and our comfortable little window ledge, but we walked around to the other side of the venue, and down the long VIP line. (It really wasn’t THAT much of a VIP line if so many people were in it, but oh well.) There was a huge rock ledge about 5 feet tall that people were lining up against. Laura and I hoisted ourselves up on the ledge--which was not nearly as comfortable as the window ledge in the previous line, but better than sitting on the ground--and started to wait again.

During the three hours of waiting, we chatted with the girl behind us in line--also named Laura--about all the bands she follows because one of her friends is in a band, and how she never waits in line to see her favorite bands, because usually she’s allowed backstage and doesn’t even watch from the audience. She was annoyed that she had to wait in line like everyone else for this Hanson show, but I was thinking, “Whatever. Welcome to the real world. This is what most people have to do.” Still, she was nice, and Laura told her allll about Mika, and dancing onstage with him.

I ate a granola bar, sat on the wall and waited some more, and heard Hanson doing soundcheck since the backstage doors were right behind us. I was excited to hear them playing “Been There Before” since I had been hoping they’d play that during the show. The wait was boring, and I was tired, but at least it wasn’t raining. The weather channel had been calling for rain earlier that day, but so far, so good.

Time crawled by, but finally it was 7:00, and we finally saw the line in front of us move. Now all during the past three hours, really mean security guards had been yelling at us to take all our cameras and cell phones back to our cars because they were not allowed in the venue and would be taken away. They also said all water bottles would be confiscated, which annoyed me because I had intended to save mine for during the show when I knew I’d be thirsty. I also didn’t want to drink all of it before the show, because I wouldn’t want to lose my spot during the show to pee. What a dilemma. So as we walked inside, I made sure my camera was hidden since I had no car to take it to, and took another few sips of my water before tossing it in the trash outside.

Here’s the really annoying part: after throwing out my water and hiding my camera so carefully, no one even checked our bags! We walked in, they scanned our tickets, and we went right through into the venue! I was so pissed I didn’t have my water anymore, and I was already thirsty again. But Laura and I wanted to be as close to the stage as we could, so we rushed through--stopping momentarily when we saw Raina who said the meet & greet was awesome, Hanson took pictures and signed her Hanson bag (that she was giving to Jennifer) and she could have had front row, but was waiting to sit with Jennifer--very sweet of her. We waved goodbye, and ran to get a good spot. “Good” is a relative term, because even with the rushing, we ended up about ten “rows” back.

I'll spare you and skip through the opening acts a bit. At 8:00, the first opening act, Kate Voegel, came onstage and she went right into her first song. She played five or six songs, and had a good voice, and a really sweet stage personality. Then Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers came onstage, and started performing, and they are so much fun to see live! They danced around, coordinated “dancing” with their guitars/bass, joked around, and looked like they were having the time of their lives. One of the band members, Kyle, was playing his last show with them that night. He was leaving the band to star in the Broadway musical Spring Awakening. He came onstage wearing biker shorts, running shorts, a tank top, and a t-shirt that he removed halfway through their set. They played longer than Kate did, and even though I enjoyed watching them, a part of me was glad when they left the stage because I was tired of standing and Hanson hadn’t even performed yet.

Now we were waiting again. I think it was a little after 9:00. My sister and I took turns leaning on each other, and I was dreaming about my water bottle sitting in the trash can outside. Smoking was allowed in this venue, and there were a group of chain smokers behind us that were really pissing me off. It was SO rude of them to smoke around so many other people. (Just a side note, but after the show was over I saw a girl standing in the hall using her inhaler. The poor girl! Why would you smoke in such an enclosed area, when there are so many people around you that hate smoking?! *rant over*) The minutes ticked by, I shifted from one foot to the next, people around us got antsy and annoyed, and the chain smoker kept going.

At 10:00, I was sure Hanson would start the show, but 10:00 came and went and we still waited. As each song ended over the loudspeakers and another one began, people in the crowd started booing. Every time a song ended, more people joined the booing, and people around us started complaining. I admit I did a bit of complaining myself. Finally, Laura and I started watching Mika on her iPod. If there was no Hanson, and no show going on in front of us, we’d rebel and listen to Mika.

Within a couple of minutes after that, one of the managers of the venue stepped onstage and up to a microphone. We stopped Laura's iPod immediately so we could listen, wondering what he was going to say. He apologized for the delay, and said there was a security concern, and they would be roping off the first five rows and doing a random bag search. Laura and I were up to about row 6 at this point, so when a huge and angry security guard shoved past us with a roll of yellow tape, we were shoved to the front of the row that wasn’t going to be searched. I panicked, thinking horrible thoughts about bombs and guns and mass shootings.

I called my dad, told him why there was going to be a delay and then waited while the front 5 rows were patted down and searched. The entire venue was in a lock-down, so no one could leave. Apparently it made it onto the local news. (Can you imagine? “Weapon scare and venue lock-down at Hanson concert.” I mean, we’re talking about a freakin’ HANSON show for crying out loud!) We didn’t know what was going on, but around 10:30-10:45, they had everyone searched, nothing was found, so the yellow tape was taken away, and we shuffled back up to the front. Because of the reshuffling during the search, Laura and I weren’t as close as before, and really tall people managed to get right in front of us. That was annoying, but soon after, the lights dimmed, and finally, FINALLY the concert started!

From the moment Hanson ran onstage and launched into a kick-a** version of “Great Divide”, everything went into a blur of music, and noise, and pushing, singing, and screaming. I waved my arms around, screaming every word they sang--and after being a fan for 11 years and standing in front of them at my 10th Hanson concert--I still couldn’t quite believe they were in front of me. My guys, my Hanson whose music has been there for me and helped create who I am for almost half of my life. They sang songs from their other albums, and when I heard the opening notes of “A Minute Without You” and Isaac started to sing, it brought back so many Hanson memories I wanted to cry. I was tired, hot, thirsty, and uncomfortable, but it didn’t matter because I was seeing them live again, so I waved my arms around in the air, jumped up and down, and sung my heart out for every single second.

For the most part, Isaac and Zac seem to go into their own worlds when they play. Isaac’s closer to the audience than Zac, so he’d run up to us occasionally--he even slid on his knees once, and leaned right into the crowd--and during those moments he’d light up and smile and laugh at us, but then he’d go back to his microphone and seem to be singing almost to himself again. Zac was in the back on drums so he couldn’t interact with us as much, but even during the acoustic set when they were lined up in front of the stage, he seemed like he was in his own little world, like his mind was on other things.

Sorry the pics are so blurry. I have an old camera.

18_ConcertZac.jpg

Taylor, on the other hand, seems to thrive on audience participation--like Mika. He reminded me so much of seeing Mika live, because he loved to have the audience sing back up, or sing a chorus, and he was looking into the audience constantly. He barely seemed to look at his piano at all. And every time he’d look out and see us screaming the lyrics and waving our arms in the air, he’d smile so big, and just keep on smiling. He loves to interact with us, and loves to keep us going. I remember at past Hanson shows it was almost a joke among fans because he’d “work” the crowd so much we’d be exhausted. “OK guys, clap like this--now faster, come on guys, clap faster! See how fast you can clap! OK, now jump up and down! Wave your arms around! Sing this! Now, the left side sing this, the middle sing this, and the rest sing with me!” I mean, his energy is so high, and he jumps around and smiles so much. He’s the Mika of the band. So fun to watch.

Crowd interaction!!! He loves us. :wub2:

A highlight for me was hearing Zac sing “Oh, Darling!” He was SO phenomenal playing drums and full-on belting this song out. Amazing, amazing job. I had seen him sing this on YouTube, but live was even better. The boy has serious skills. And Isaac sang a new song by himself onstage, which I thought was really beautiful, although a girl behind me commented that it was boring. A slow song does not equal boring, and I was just honored he sang it for us since he said “I guarantee you have not heard this before.” So it was a new, new song. I was so glad they sang, “Been There Before,” “A Minute Without You,” “MMMBop” (acoustic), “If Only,” “Watch Over Me,” “Runaway Run,” “Rock n Roll Razorblade,” and “Lost Without Each Other,” but every song was great. I didn’t really care what they sang as long as they were in front of me.

For the encore, they ran back onstage with Kate Voegle and the Sixers, and they ALL sang “Peace Train” together. Taylor--of course--taught everyone the chorus, and we all sang along with them. Kate was sharing Isaac’s microphone, the Sixers were all running around the stage singing and hugging, and Taylor was conducting us as we sang. It was so flipping awesome and inspirational, and for a moment I felt like if we all yelled loud enough, maybe we could make that song come to life--even for a moment. Nothing could go wrong when so many people were so happy at the same time.

Then everyone but Isaac, Taylor, Zac left the stage. Hanson thanked us, talked one last time about the difference we can all make if we choose to, and then closed the show with an acapella version of “Great Divide.”

They left the stage, the lights came up, and I looked at Laura. We smiled, hugged, and made our way out of the venue.

*does a dance* I see myself in the audience! (Are those all screen caps from the theatre's website? Very nice!)

And seriously, you look amazing in those two pictrures. There's no way I'm posting mine even if Kate and Kyle look great next to me, because I look horrifying.

Yes, we both love Kyle now. He's a cutie. :wink2:

Ah, Lissa - what an amazing, detailed review! Complete with pics and videos! :mf_lustslow:

I love how these boys were basically child stars - only now, instead of checking into rehab and getting DUIs, they're raising their own kids and raising money for shoe-less kids in Africa. They're musicians, yes, but they're also such great role models.

Sounds like an amazing time, despite the crowds/pushing/security delay. Thank you for sharing! :thumb_yello:

You're so welcome, Mana. Despite the craziness, I had a blast and I miss them already. :wub2:

Sweet! So when you meet Hanson, you need to tell Issac that. They should let you do a little harmonizing on the next album. :wink2:

But yeah...the only time I sing, I make sure no one can hear me. i.e. when no one's home, or when I'm in the car with the windows rolled up. :naughty: I sing all the time, though!

I haven't heard them yet (I'm not a member) but they seem to be good, cause there are a little bit o them on hanson.net first page.

(Hope you can understand what I've just written... Think it's a little confusing o.O)
