Pris dans le tourbillon d'une autre de ces journées folles dont il a le secret, Mika a pris 15 minutes de son temps, hier, pour causer avec La Presse de son album symphonique enregistré en concert avec l'OSM l'hiver dernier. Une très courte pause entre les enregistrements des émissions The X Factor, en Italie, et The Voice, en France, et un peu de promotion en Europe pour le lancement de son disque symphonique made in Montréal, qui est dans les bacs ce matin.

 

Mika nous l'a déjà dit: les trois concerts qu'il a donnés avec l'OSM et son chef Simon Leclerc à la Maison symphonique, en février, ont été l'une des plus belles expériences de sa vie professionnelle et personnelle.

Après avoir passé des heures à écouter les enregistrements desdits concerts, il garde un souvenir encore plus émerveillé de cet orchestre magnifique et de la Maison symphonique, cet écrin qui les a accueillis.

«On a enregistré les trois concerts, mais on a surtout choisi des chansons du premier des trois. Pas nécessairement parce que c'était le meilleur, mais parce qu'il y avait une qualité d'émotion particulière ce soir-là.»

 

Dans son métier, ajoute-t-il, on enregistre et on corrige en studio, mais on a rarement l'occasion de graver un disque comme celui-là, avec toutes les imperfections que suppose un enregistrement en direct. «Dans la vie, aussi bien dans la musique que dans le sexe, c'est meilleur quand il y a des imperfections», dit-il en rigolant.

Oui, acquiesce-t-il, cet album symphonique a dans ses orchestrations une qualité cinématographique: «Quand on préparait les arrangements avec Simon, j'avais en tête des images très précises que je partageais avec lui.»

 

Ces concerts montréalais représentaient également un beau défi pour le chanteur dont la formation classique se manifeste notamment quand il chante Over My Shoulder de sa voix de tête. Mais pour Mika, l'essentiel est ailleurs: «En préparant ces concerts, je voulais d'abord briser des barrières, que ce ne soit plus de la pop ou du classique, mais de la musique tout court.»

Un DVD à venir

C'est d'ailleurs ce qu'il avait à l'esprit quand il a conçu à Montréal son troisième album, The Origin of Love, dont les chansons se prêtent peut-être mieux que les autres au traitement symphonique, estime-t-il. Mika aurait pu citer en exemple la majestueuse Underwater, mais il parle plutôt d'Overrated, qui n'a pas pourtant été retenue sur l'album avec l'OSM.

«Oh! c'est vrai, elle va être sur le DVD», ajoute-t-il aussitôt.

Le DVD en question, nous apprend-il, a été tourné le mois dernier par la télé de Sky au Teatro Sociale de Côme, en Italie, avec la complicité de Simon Leclerc et d'un orchestre italien.

L'association avec Sky a permis de financer le tournage de ce concert symphonique, mais Mika a dû convaincre d'autres investisseurs pour rendre la chose possible. Ce DVD devrait paraître l'an prochain, une fois que Sky aura diffusé le concert.

«On a d'abord fait, avec Simon, un concert secret avec un petit orchestre dans un jardin à Rome, pour Valentino, puis on s'est dit qu'on pourrait tourner un DVD, ce qu'on a pu faire à Côme. À Montréal, on voulait se concentrer sur la musique et non pas avoir 40 caméras qui se promènent partout.»

En tout cas, la proposition spontanée que lui a faite André Ménard d'être le programmateur invité d'une série au Festival de jazz n'est pas tombée dans l'oreille d'un sourd: «Je lui ai écrit et j'attends sa réponse.»

Thank you for the translation! think thats the quote the interviewer added... its interesting to hear that he's gonna play other orchestra gigs except Canada France Italy....cant imagine any special gigs except those three huge markets that welcomes Mika... and as far as I know the reason OSM out early next year at those two country (Korea and Japan)is something different.... hmmm...

Not only that. It proves just how brilliant his music really is. He's a true musician and his music has such heart, and so many layers to it. It lends itself to the classics and it's almost classical anyway. It's not normal pop music. I've thought that he should go down the classical route from now on. I don't think he'll ever again be big as a popstar. For one thing, the pop world has moved on. Another thing, he's getting older. But that's good. Mika is like wine that improves with age, and there could be a niche for him in the classical genre, which he would be wise to try to fill.

I agree.  MIKAs music is brilliant, it's not "normal pop music" - and he's not just an ordinary, "normal popstar".  Both MIKA and his music is unique If it was not, I doubt that Simon Leclerc would have bothered with co-operating the way he does now.  Imo, it's all a total  proof of quality, and I'm very excited re. MIKAs future as a musician...

The DVD in question, he tells us, was shot last month by the TV of Sky at Teatro Sociale of Como, Italy, with the complicity of Simon Leclerc and an Italian orchestra.

The association with Sky allowed to finance the making/shooting of this symphony concert, but Mika had to convince other investors to make the thing possible. This DVD should appear next year, once Sky will have broadcast the concert.

"We first did, with Simon, a secret concert with a small orchestra in a garden in Rome, for Valentino, and then we said that we could shoot a DVD, what we were able to do in Como . In Montreal, we wanted to focus on the music and not to have 40 cameras that go around/circulate everywhere. "

The symphonic adventure of Mika and Simon Leclerc will continue, confirms the singer.

And if it was made in Japan or in Korea, where Mika will return to sing soon and which are the only two countries besides Canada, where the album with the OSM is sold in the same way? Mika has no concert, pop or symphonic, planned/scheduled in Quebec in the near future. "Invite me!", He suggests in bursting out laughing.

Grazie mille Charlie20 !!  I really appreciate your translation of this interview from La Presse When it comes to "other concerts that I can't talk about",  we can only guess that Korea or Japan might get it    I personally wish that MIKAs next symphonic concert could take place in the Royal Opera House in London, where his music adventure started     In this arena MIKA even has his own chair, which he could let Andy use, for this special night, as an honorguest - or his mother, or his Russian music teacher, the possibilities are many   And the BBC could record,  and broadcast,  it all...
