Une fois les invités installés autour du prince Albert II, de la princesse Caroline et de ses enfants, c’est un spectacle rythmé et efficace qui s’est ouvert, renouvelant le genre dans la Salle des Étoiles sertie d’un décor total évoquant l’architecture d’une ville indienne dans un beau jeu de lumière sur les murs en carton-pâte. Expérience totale Sur scène, l’espace était presque trop petit pour accueillir les danseurs venus d’Inde avec, dans leurs bagages, leurs chants et danses traditionnels pour plonger complètement dans une comédie musicale bollywoodienne. Christian Louboutin en avait écrit le scénario. Celui de Beauty, jeune femme évanouie que seule la beauté absolue réveillera. La Belle de Bombay s’endort sur le plateau alors qu’autour d’elle on chante et on danse. À défaut de réveiller Beauty, le rythme communicatif s’empare de la salle, où dans les assiettes, les équipes de la SBM ont eu l’audace de marier le thème à la cuisine : black cod tandoori, agneau korma et nan en guise de pain… Expérience totale ! À ceux qui ont coutume de dire que les galas sont des soirées qui s’éternisent, le Bal de la Rose 2023 a répondu par la modernité. Le service du dîner débuté vers 21 h 30 n’aura pas duré plus de deux heures. Laissant à peine aux convives le temps de souffler dans cet Express pour Bollywood, entre la valse à quatre temps du menu et les numéros du spectacle s’achevant – au réveil de Beauty – dans une danse finale frénétique obligeant à rejoindre le mouvement. Le souverain est le premier debout pour ovationner la troupe. Et le public n’a pas le temps de se rasseoir quand – dans une explosion – déboule sur scène le bondissant Mika. And the Bollywood theme is so cool with all the dancers, I’m impressed with how they integrated it with Mika‘s performance. Davina Cadogan shares all from inside The Rose Ball – Monaco’s most glamorous night When it comes to the Riviera’s most glittering galas, nothing beats the incomparable glamour of Monaco’s Rose Ball. Each March, It-girls, socialites and film stars charter their helicopters, board their superyachts and descend upon the billionaire’s playground to dance and drink the night away in truly spectacular fashion. Founded in 1954, the Rose Ball (or, Bal de la Rose) was conceived by Princess Grace of Monaco as a way to raise money for The Princess Grace Foundation, her charity supporting sick children. On the death of the Monégasque royal in 1982, the mantle was taken up by her daughter, Princess Caroline of Hanover, the current President of The Princess Grace Foundation, who has continued the tradition of hosting the important fundraising event. This year, I was among those who received one of the heavy calligraphed envelopes containing a coveted invitation. Upon opening, we discovered Princess Caroline’s chosen theme for this year’s extravaganza: ‘Bollywood’. Checking into the Hotel Hermitage, a Belle Époque beauty in the heart of Monte Carlo, I bumped into a well-heeled Monaco socialite who declared: ‘This is the opening of the social season’. Suites at the hotel, known for its thermal spa, Michelin-starred restaurants and regal clientele, are booked out by Rose Ball attendees looking to replicate the glamour of the evening in their choice of accommodation. (Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco, currently dogged by ‘malicious’ rumours of a separation, stepped out of the hotel's revolving doors and into their blacked-out car as I arrived). As the sun set behind the glitzy harbour, Monaco’s most in-demand makeup artists and hairstylists darted between suites along the hotel’s corridors, while other guests sipped on champagne downstairs on the Crystal Bar’s terrace overlooking the twinkling bay. I slip into a Dior ombre-blue sequin gown paired with Felt diamond earrings and necklace – and felt twinkly enough for an evening with the stars. The Salle des Étoiles of the Sporting Monte-Carlo sparkled more than usual; the sequin-encrusted walls reflected the light of the glittering attendees on the red carpet. Inside, The Rose Ball’s Artistic Director, Christian Louboutin (who follows in the fashionable footsteps of his predecessor, Karl Lagerfeld) had transformed the space into a Jaipur partyscape. A recreation of Jaipur’s pink Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) enveloped us as we made our way to our seats as dancers dressed in bedazzled saris twirled around us to create a kaleidoscopic feast for the eyes. Each vibrant table was decorated with exquisite red and orange roses, trails of tuberose and candles which cast a soft glow upon the river of champagne flutes and wine glasses. Louboutin had brought Bollywood to Monaco. Princess Caroline and her brother, Prince Albert II, led the charge of Grimaldis into the decadent room, where guests rose from their seats to cheer the royal procession. Exuding Bollywood glamour, Charlotte Casiraghi smiled as she stunned in a sequin Chanel Haute Couture gown, while Beatrice Borromeo shone in a black and gold dress and hair piece from Dior’s latest Haute Couture collection as she entered on the arm of her husband, the dapper Pierre Casiraghi. As the Grimaldis took their seats, plates of lobster, lamb and seabass circulated the room while the hum of Bollywood hits played in the background. After the starter, the raffle began: Louis Vuitton handbags, a private jet ride and a Cartier diamond panther necklace were offered up. (The latter of which was promptly donned by the glamorous winner, who had to adjust the rows of diamonds already draped across her neck to make room for her recent addition). Performances by the Gypsies of Rajasthan and the Bassant group continued throughout dinner, with Prince Albert standing to cheer the dancers after each electric performance. He wasn’t the only Monégasque royal getting into the sport. As popstar Mika ran onto the stage in a gold trouser suit, Princess Alexandra of Hanover, Charlotte Casiraghi, and Tatiana and Andrea Casiraghi rushed onto the dancefloor to sing along to the star’s hit Grace Kelly – named in honour of their late ancestor. Each time the name of the actress-turned-princess was sung, the crowd of royals cheered ‘Mika, Mika, Mika’. Dancing continued well into the early hours, with Charlotte Casiraghi’s dress glistening under the stage lights as she danced to Paper Planes by M.I.A in front of the crowd. At 2am, the evening drew to a close. As the lights of the pink Hawa Mahal dimmed and the lasers stretching across the dancefloor faded, a parade of couture-clad women trotted down the red carpet and hopped into black limousines to their next destinations. Where to? Cars made their way to Jimmy’z nightclub, villas along the shoreline, and a few disappeared behind the Prince’s Palace of Monaco.
