La magia fiabesca di “May your head always bloom” invade l’Arena Santa Giuliana di Antonella Valoroso Che il pubblico di Umbria Jazz lo aspettasse dal 2020 si è capito subito dal boato con cui lo ha accolto quando lo ha visto arrivare nel suo sfolgorante abito di paillettes verde smeraldo. “Fa caldo e conviene iniziare piano piano”, con una “Lollipop” sussurrata in inglese prima e poi in in italiano: “Troppe caramelle ti fanno male….” Ma dopo 5 minuti è già in piedi sul pianoforte. “Che felicità ritornare a Umbria jazz, il festival più elegante d’Italia!” e invita il pubblico a unirsi a lui. Mika arriva sul palco dell’Arena Santa Giuliana ed è subito show! Artista, showman, conduttore, ma soprattutto cantautore dal grande spessore umano, Mika domina la scena con la magia fiabesca del suo “May your head always bloom”, un augurio di continuare a fiorire ancora e ancora e ancora. Dopo tre pezzi si libera della giacca -“pesa 44 chili”- e si allenta la cravatta per ballare tra le scintille la sua “Ice cream”. Una capriola e ritorna in scena di bianco vestito, con un enorme fiore rosa all’occhiello, perché “Adesso che non siamo più in diretta alla radio, e siamo soli, lo spettacolo può iniziare”. Scende dal palco per raggiungere il centro della platea. Ma non è abbastanza. Raggiunge la gradinata e diventa arbitro di una gara di ballo tra il pubblico in platea e quello sulla gradinata. Seduto non resta nessuno. Sarà una serata di fuoco! Non fa in tempo a sedersi al piano che parte con un nuovo “numero”: chiama sul palco una ragazza del pubblico per duettare in “Tiny love”. The energy, the interactions, the new arrangements for transitions between songs, the new lighting display, everything was designed to pull you in, knock your socks off and get you dancing. It was fantastic. And in the middle of it all, like the perfect ringmaster, Mika, giving one of the best performances I've ever seen. Una performance a 360 gradi quella del 40enne libanese, alla sua seconda esperienza sul palco della rassegna perugina, di cui lui stesso racconta il primo impatto, al pubblico dell’Arena Santa Giuliana, ricordando l’incontro con Renzo Arbore. Esploso alla ribalta internazionale oltre 15 anni fa, quando si parlava di lui come del nuovo Freddy Mercury, Mika si è trasformato mille volte e ha intessuto un legame speciale con il nostro paese: parlare italiano lo aiuta a coinvolgere il pubblico, che lo accoglie nel suo abbraccio quando scende in platea a cantare in mezzo alla folla e che si emoziona con lui quando chiama una ragazza a suonare il piano sul palco. Uno spettacolo coinvolgente, con una scenografia appropriata e cambi d’abito, lontano dallo stile compassato del jazz, ma il pubblico apprezza e lo fa capire urlando a squarciagola il nome del suo beniamino. Sono venuti da tutto il mondo a vedere Mika e chi non ha potuto, come questa ragazza vietnamita, segue il concerto in videochiamata con un’amica… L’ultima parte è un crescendo, con i fuochi d’artificio e lui che indossa una corona, prima del gran finale. It was a good show, certainly some highlights, but generally it was my least fave of the shows I saw so far this year - Cheltenham, Isle of Wight, Bristol and Cattolica. I think I could enjoy it a little less because people around me were often pushing, thus I couldn't move freely, it was really hot and especially there were speakers right in front of me, so the bass was way too loud and towards the end of the show (the last 2 songs or so) I could hardly hear Mika's voice, definitely not what he was saying, because it just disappeared in the loud music. I don't know if it was just the speaker on our side or the same for everyone who was in front of a speaker, but that certainly wasn't the good sound quality I'm used to from Mika's shows. I suppose it was a challenge for the festival crew because usually there's Jazz artists with acoustic instruments and not Pop/Rock music. Anyway, as opposed to Cattolica, apparently someone had informed security that they shouldn't be as strict as they usually are, but let people get up and dance, and go to the barrier. So that's what happened after the 3rd song. I think Mika said the first 3 were streamed live on the radio? Lollipop, Origin and Ice Cream. Probably Radio Monte Carlo, they seemed to be a sponsor. And while he was in the crowd for BG, everyone ran to the barrier. The intro for Love Today that played at the beginning in Cattolica was played while Mika was off stage before the encore, so we had 2 intro / interlude parts - pretty good idea imo! And I love what Mika did with his voice for Happy Ending! I posted a video on my Instagram (mellodymusic_), will upload it here too at some point but now I need to sleep - got only 1 hour of sleep last night because we were so stupid to wait for hours and my train left at 5:20am. We didn't see Mika after the show - for some reason the Italian fans seemed convinced we could meet him in front of his hotel up in the old town where the street part of the festival took place - apparently he had mentioned on stage that he was staying there and the security people at the gates after the show told fans to go there. I don't understand enough Italian to confirm this, but in any case we ended up waiting there, hours for nothing. At first it felt a bit like in Carcassonne, which turned out nice, but as nothing happened, I think it'd have been better to leave earlier. I don't know if Mika didn't know there were fans or if he just doesn't want to support this by meeting fans there, maybe both... anyway, for the next time we know better (I hope). Seeing the videos above from where Mika goes on and off stage, I suppose there must be some secret tunnel between the arena and the hotel. He didn't jump right into a car, apparently, so he couldn't have left that quickly without being noticed. Shame we didn't get to meet him, but I'm also glad that it doesn't go towards waiting in front of his hotel. I used to do that for the boybands in the 90s, and one reason why i stopped following Take That and started following Mika instead in 2007 was that I didn't feel like a stalker and beggar when meeting him after the show, but like he really wanted to meet his fans and didn't avoid them, like Take That did most of the time - sure, he was just starting and they had been in the business for 15 or 20 years, but now Mika has been doing this for 16-17 years as well and he still makes sure most of the time that he meets his fans, because he likes us and we like him. 4 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
