Mika: «Questi sono i 40»

 

Con la ricerca della gioia a che punto è?

«So che la felicità più favolosa sta nelle piccole cose. Può essere fare un concerto e di sicuro sta nel mettermi a rischio con nuove idee, quando queste nuove idee mi spingono ad assumermi il rischio di essere scomodi. Dobbiamo essere scomodi, la scomodità fa provare tanta gioia. I fiori circondati dai sassi sono quelli che sbocciano più a lungo e nel mondo migliore. Rimanere creativo e sentire questa pressione di voler continuare a inventare il futuro è una cosa molto bella. Tutto questo senza perdere quelli che amo, la mia famiglia, che sento molto vicina. Un’altra cosa che mi fa felice è cucinare. Spesso mentre sono sul palco penso a cosa mangerò dopo, una felicità collegata all’altra (ride,ndr)».

Cosa le piace di più cucinare?

«Onestamente la cosa che mi provoca più soddisfazione è quando posso cucinare un sugo di pomodoro preparato con i pomodori esattamente nel momento giusto dell’anno. Quando il pomodoro è così perfetto che riesci a togliere la buccia senza immergerlo nell’acqua calda. Bastano un filo d’olio, un po’ di aglio e la natura fa il resto. Ci sarà anche quel sugo di pomodoro nella mia cena di compleanno».

 

Cosa succederà, infatti, quando la carovana giungerà a destinazione?

«Su quest’isola greca, a nove ore di distanza da Atene, ci saranno 25 persone arrivate da tutte le parti del mondo. Saremo su una spiaggia fatta di grossi sassi dove c’è solo una minuscola taverna. Lì ci sarà tutto quello che piace a me: i miei cari, un po’ di scomodità che fa sempre bene e i piatti più semplici. Staremo insieme in tutta la bellezza che la semplicità porta con sé. Io ho sempre avuto questa tradizione della carovana, anche quando ho compiuto trent'anni ho affittato sei o sette Mini Cooper e siamo partiti dalla Svizzera per arrivare in Campania. C’era anche un’infermiera che potesse prendersi cura di mia nonna durante il viaggio».

Mika: «Questi sono i 40»

 

Una carovana tra le isole greche, un sugo al pomodoro preparato a mano e la felicità che fa rima con scomodità. Il cantautore e showman libanese ci porta dentro i suoi 40 anni, che compie il 18 agosto da «tigre sorridente». Con la consapevolezza che «avere a che fare con la morte può farti capire meglio la vita»

 

Se in questi giorni vi capitasse di passare per un’isola greca, potreste incappare in una coloratissima e allegra carovana. Tante barche a vela una dietro l’altra, con l’obiettivo di navigare per sei giorni. Destinazione, una piccola taverna a gestione familiare. Alla guida di questa spedizione dovreste riconoscere il comandante, che potrebbe avere in testa un copricapo a forma di tigre («sorridente», ci tiene a precisare). Quel comandante è Mika, e ha invitato chi ama di più a cena. L’occasione è importante: il cantautore e showman dai mille volti e dai mille colori il 18 agosto compie 40 anni. Pieni di cose, difficilmente riassumibili in un elenco come questo: l’infanzia a Beirut, il trasferimento a Parigi a causa della guerra civile, il padre preso in ostaggio in Kuwait all’interno dell’ambasciata americana, le difficoltà economiche, l’arrivo a Londra, la casa che non c’è più, le prime esibizioni, la mamma manager sempre al fianco, il successo con Grace Kelly nel 2007, la scoperta dell’Italia, gli anni da giudice a X Factor, i programmi tv, la consacrazione nel Regno Unito, in Francia e nel resto del mondo. Quest’estate Mika è tornato sul palco, con una consapevolezza nuova ci racconterà qui, dopo un periodo di silenzio. È stato in Corea, in Giappone, in Gran Bretagna, in Marocco, in Spagna, in Italia, in Grecia… e si è divertito molto. «Per la prima volta», spiega, «ho avuto l’impressione che il pubblico di Osaka sentisse la stessa energia di quello di Umbria Jazz. Un’energia molto forte, graffiante. Come se tutti conoscessero lo stesso linguaggio, quello che appartiene a me e alla mia musica».

 

 

Come è arrivato a questo punto?

«Ho sempre pensato che i concerti dovessero avere la stessa importanza che si dà a un nuovo album. Ho cercato quindi di costruire un mondo in cui chi entra si sente a casa. Io apro loro la porta, faccio in modo che si sentano protetti, che abbassino le loro difese. Dopo quasi 20 anni di show niente è lasciato al caso. Sono sempre stato ossessionato dalla preparazione: ogni dettaglio, ogni colore, ogni ritmo è studiato fino in fondo. Tutto questo con un unico scopo: concedere a me stesso la migliore possibilità di perdere completamente il controllo quando salgo sul palco. Pianifico tutto per dopo lasciarmi andare nel mondo più trasparente e istintivo possibile».

Cosa vuol dire compiere 40 anni?

«Mi fa ridere perché non so cosa dovrei provare. A me sembra che non siano abbastanza per dire “ecco sono arrivato nella fase deliziosa della vecchiaia”, e allo stesso tempo credo che siano troppi per avere la scusa di fare tutto il chiasso e tutte le stupidate che vorrei. È come se fossi un po’ in un purgatorio moralistico dei comportamenti, rispetto a quello che mi è permesso fare e non fare, dire e non dire. Ma vuole sapere cosa mi provoca questa sensazione?».

Certo. Cosa le provoca?

«Una reazione fortissima, ossia me ne frego completamente. Se mi chiede, invece, se sono cresciuto o se mi sento adulto, devo dire che quando salgo sul palco c’è sempre una parte di me che è rimasta alla prima volta. Mi sento quindi come se avessi sempre nove anni, per il resto invece sento di avere l’età che ho e forse anche di più».

Che cosa l’ha fatta crescere?

«Oggi capisco molto di più la vita. E questo è successo perché ho sperimentato le zone più oscure, ho attraversato il buio. Ho scoperto che, paradossalmente, avere a che fare con la morte può farti capire meglio la vita. Impari che si sopravvive anche al dolore».
Qui quando parla, Mika, rende le pause più profonde, prende fiato e aspetta tra un pensiero e l’altro. Non serve nominare mamma Joannie, scomparsa nel febbraio 2021, è già tutto chiaro.
«Anche se ho una parte di me che non vuole crescere, oggi non mi sento immaturo. Sento anche di non avere più paura della vita e forse nemmeno della morte. Questo mi rende più coraggioso e forse più adolescente nella grinta, nella follia, nelle ambizioni che ho. Stranamente, forse sono anche più libero».

Com’era, invece, a 20 anni?

«Estremamente alla ricerca della gioia e del calore, ma anche estremamente timido. Intimorito dagli sguardi degli altri, dai giudizi».

Beirut, l’Italia, Londra, Parigi, ha sempre viaggiato molto. Che valore dà ai confini?

«Esistono e sono interessanti, però un confine in sé non dovrebbe mai essere un problema. Il problema si crea quando il confine da uno dei due lati viene reso inaccessibile dalla paura o da un'aggressione. L’idea di un mondo senza confini è secondo me poco credibile, invece un mondo con confini e con meno paure è possibile. Io quando ero più giovane avevo una paura molto forte, quella di non sapere dove fosse casa. Non sapevo dove fosse il mio albero, quello sotto cui avevo fumato la prima sigaretta, dato il primo bacio, pianto… Nella mia mente mi ero quindi ricreato un paese immaginario in cui posizionare quell’albero. Per questo in tutte le mie espressioni grafiche degli inizi c’era sempre un albero, lo mettevo dappertutto senza alcun motivo. Ero ossessionato dalla casa, oggi invece riconosco che non è un problema ma un grandissimo vantaggio. Ovviamente non vale per tutti, ma sento che per me è un bene. Mi sono reso conto che quell’albero è solo un’idea, non deve esistere realmente».

Se prima c’era un albero, ora nei suoi concerti tiene in testa una tigre. Perché?

«La storia della tigre sorridente è nata qualche anno fa. Mia madre mi aveva preparato un biglietto di auguri e sotto a una foto di fiori aveva scritto “che la tua testa possa sempre fiorire". Da lì a farla diventare il mio manifesto il passo è stato breve: la tua testa fiorisce se hai delle idee, e queste idee - se sono forti e se credi abbastanza in loro - possono trasformarti in una tigre, feroce, ruggente e felice. Negli ultimi due anni ho voluto essere quella tigre e creare il mio atelier che oggi finalmente è operativo».

Dove si trova?

«È in Puglia, e lì - insieme ad alcuni collaboratori bravissimi - diamo forma ai miei disegni creando abiti cuciti a mano, maschere, opere d’arte. Sono cresciuto con una madre, oggi non c’è più, che creava vestiti in cucina, da noi c’erano sempre le sarte alle 7 del mattino. Si confondevano le spille e i tessuti, con la cioccolata calda e il pane burro e marmellata della colazione. Le sarte restavano anche alle 10 di sera, mischiandosi con il pollo e il riso della cena. Sono cresciuto così con l’idea che i vestiti non debbano essere solo qualcosa che si trovano nei negozi, immobili, i vestiti sono caos e creazione. Da sempre mi piace lavorare con i grandi stilisti ma anche con i piccoli artigiani. Negli ultimi anni sono entrato in una fase ossessiva in cui ho studiato i primi abiti di Mick Jagger e David Bowie, quelli creati da loro stessi. Ho trovato così negli abiti ancora più poesia, credo che un artista debba avere anche la responsabilità di creare qualcosa con le proprie mani, imperfetto magari ma genuino. Partendo da questo è nato il mio atelier di moda. Mia madre ne aveva uno, ma è sparito con lei. Io ho sempre avuto un laboratorio di scenografia ed esiste ancora, è in Inghilterra».

 

Ha raccontato che lì conserva anche tutte le sue scenografie di scena.

«Sembra un lunapark, dentro ci sono cose pazzesche. Quando entri lì, entri dentro il mio mondo bislacco, è come entrare in un film di Tim Burton».

Cosa le piace di più del conservare le cose?

«Ogni oggetto rappresenta un momento e racconta una storia. Quando la guardo in progressione ho la conferma che sto continuando a costruire, ed è sempre molto più interessante inventare il futuro quando non dimentichi il passato».

In quasi 20 anni di carriera e di show, quanto pensa abbia aggiunto la musica alla sua vita?

«La mia intera vita è musica, tutto questo storytelling che le ho raccontato finora è al servizio della musica. Ho questo desiderio da quando avevo 8 anni, già allora c’era il mondo intorno a me e poi c’era il mio mondo immaginario. E avevo una paura enorme non di fallire ma di non avere la possibilità di trasformare in realtà quei sogni astratti. Sogni che ho anche oggi. Quando mi viene l’idea di un qualcosa che potrebbe essere ma non so bene come, entro in una sorta di “daydreaming” continuo. Da ragazzino temevo di rimanere solo un sognatore e questo sarebbe stato un fallimento per me, e non un fallimento da cui puoi imparare qualcosa, bensì un vuoto in cui non c’è nulla da tirare fuori. Avevo 8 anni ed ero terrorizzato. Spostavo tutti i mobili di casa, mettevo le sedie sul tavolo, e ci vedevo tutta una scenografia, un mondo parallelo. La mia famiglia, invece, vedeva solo la realtà delle cose, ossia scatole vuote, mobili del salotto riposizionati. Non vedevano il mio paesaggio, il mio albero, tutte le cose meravigliose che invece immaginavo io. A un certo punto ricordo anche una conversazione tra mio padre e mia madre in cui lui le chiedeva se la mia immaginazione estrema potesse essere una patologia, qualcosa da curare. In quel momento ho sentito la pressione ancora più forte, dovevo assolutamente trovare un modo per costruire nella realtà quello che immaginavo nella mia testa».

 

 

Poi l’ha trovato. Il suo mondo immaginario esiste ancora?

«Assolutamente sì. Anche se ho quest’atelier molto grande e bello, mi piace lavorare sempre in cucina. Resto lì e vado alla ricerca di storie che mi emozionano. In questo momento sto ridisegnando, insieme a un grafico inglese, il logo Mika che per me è stato certezza per tanto tempo. Stiamo lavorando intorno all’idea della cellula, che è il luogo originario di qualsiasi cosa. Tutto e niente partono da lì. Sono e sarò sempre un daydreamer, un sognatore a occhi aperti. Un insegnante d’arte che avevo ai tempi della scuola mi ha insegnato che ognuno di noi può fare qualsiasi cosa nella vita, basta che non abbia paura di quello che pensa di poter o non poter fare. Basta prendere un’idea, svilupparla e poi darle il permesso di evolversi, cambiare forma e colore. Vale anche per la vita: deve avere il permesso di virare verso l’imprevisto».

Che cosa le ha tolto, invece, la musica?

«Il tempo. Il senso del tempo, da un punto di vista lineare e tradizionale perché la musica impone altri tempi e altre regole. Questa cosa può essere molto seducente, ma spesso ti ritrovi a vivere una linea del tempo molto diversa da quelli che hai intorno, anche quelli che ami. Come la tua famiglia o gli amici, e questo rischia di isolarti. È un qualcosa da gestire, controllare».

Che cosa le fa paura oggi?

«Che si crei intorno a me una situazione generale o personale che possa bloccare le mie idee e la mia immaginazione. Mi fa paura non avere più il desiderio o la possibilità di essere un sognatore. Ho paura del timore, ho paura di avere paura delle conseguenze, e questa è una cosa che ti paralizza. Non lasciarsi mai la possibilità che una cosa imprevista possa far volare il tuo cuore è un gran peccato. Un cuore che non vola funziona, è utile, ma è decisamente molto meno divertente».

Per innamorarsi, invece, cosa le serve?

«L’incoscienza. Quando vedi una persona, un ragazzo o una ragazza chi se ne frega della definizioni, e quella trasparenza va oltre l’aspetto fisico. Essere talmente a tuo agio da riuscire a essere inconsapevolmente incosciente è per me una cosa molto seducente».

È ancora un timido?

«Sì, un po’. E soprattutto arrossisco con una facilità incredibile. Sul palco faccio quello che so fare, ma quando vado a una festa spesso sparisco. Questo, però, ha dei vantaggi».

Quali?

«Quando sai sparire, puoi sparire in qualsiasi momento, anche al supermercato. Io so sparire in un secondo, è come se avessi una cappa magica che quando la indosso mi rende invisibile. Del resto è stancante essere sempre visibili, essere sempre davanti agli occhi degli altri. Io mi infilo il mio mantello e puff, scomparso!».

Mika est un garçon délicieux. Délicieux à regarder, délicieux à écouter, délicieux à humer, puisqu'il arrive pour l'interview avec une focaccia tiède au thym, qu'il grignotera tout au long de la conversation. Grand, très grand, 1,92 mètre, le dandy flashy qui, sur scène, a une prédilection pour les paillettes et les costumes chatoyants est aussi un modèle d'élégance: casquette siglée Bates, des Nike Air d'un blanc immaculé qu'il entretient avec du Windex (sorte d'Ajax Vitres), un pull noir à col rond sur un pantalon à pinces en velours gris perle de chez Connolly à Londres. Une institution fré- quentée par les hommes les plus chics de la planète. Son nouvel album, «Que ta tête fleurisse toujours » (Island), promet d'être un carton avec, entre autres, le single « C'est la vie », hymne magnifique dédié à sa mère, dont la mélodie reste en tête dès la pre- mière écoute. On se prendra aussi à danser sur « Apocalypse Calypso », à rêver d'<< un amour à la Birkin », refrain envoûtant de l'une de ses chansons, pour finir par traverser la capitale au rythme de « Moi, Andy et Paris >>. Du Mika purjus, mélange de pop lumineuse et de spleen oriental, qui nous entraîne loin, très loin, de la morosité ambiante. Le garçon à l'éternelle allure preppy nous a ouvert les portes de son univers.

 

 

MES PARENTS, MES SOEURS ET MOI AU TROCADERO
<< Je suis né à Beyrouth. J'ai lan et demi lorsque la famille s'installe à Paris. Mon père, qui travaille dans la finance, gagne très bien sa vie. Nous habitons alors dans le 16° arrondissement, square Lamartine, un grand appartement débordant d'animation. Ma mère, en effet, confectionne tous nos vêtements avec ses amies. Pour elle, entrer dans un magasin de prêt- à-porter n'est pas une option. Je me souviens du bruit des machines à coudre, des grands ciseaux qui coupent les tissus, il y a toujours une femme qui fume à la fenêtre, une autre qui prépare à manger, une troisième qui met de la musique... C'est joyeux et chaleureux. Puis ma maman s'est mise à faire des vêtements pour les autres. Elle les vend ensuite dans des magasins parisiens. Moi, je vais à l'école affublé d'un pantalon à élastique, d'une cape et d'une cagoule. J'ai déjà un petit look bien à moi ! >>

AU PIANO, À 15 ANS
<< Je compose encore aujourd'hui sur le piano de mon enfance. J'ai 7 ans lorsque mon père est envoyé au Koweït, pour son travail, en pleine guerre d'Irak. Il y est resté prisonnier pendant sept mois. Lorsqu'il est enfin rentré, il a traversé une période très difficile, ses affaires ont périclité. Les huissiers ont fini par emporter tous nos meubles. Sauf le piano. Et pour cause: on le louait. La boîte de location ayant fait faillite, personne ne l'a réclamé. Résultat, c'est la seule chose que nous avons pu emmener avec nous à Londres, où nous nous sommes installés. A cette époque, j'ai eu le malheur de tomber sur une professeure qui m'a harcelé. Avec l'aval de mes parents, j'ai arrêté l'école. Le matin, j'allais au parc et l'après- midi je travaillais ma musique. J'avais une prof de piano écossaise et une prof de chant russe qui m'a formé au chant lyrique. Plus tard, j'ai réintégré le système scolaire tout en travaillant, car je commençais à composer : pour British Airways, pour des émissions de cuisine, pour une pub de chewing-gums... >>

 

MON ATELIER DE CREATION
<< L'année dernière, j'ai fondé un atelier de création dans un village de Toscane, à trente minutes de Florence. << Le Liban, c'est une part de mon identité. Le joli port de Tyr, où nous allions en vacances, avec ses lumières qui scintillent, en fait partie. Mais aussi cette façon si typique de poser un regard grave sur le monde, de se poser des questions. Sans oublier les mélodies d'Oum Kalthoum et de Fairuz, l'odeur du café noir et celle du thé blanc, l'arak, la politique, les épices, l'arabe que les tantes parlent entre elles et leurs effluves de laque Elnett. >>

<< Je travaille avec ma sœur Yasmine depuis vingt- sept ans ! Elle sait donner vie à mon imaginaire. Nous avons été élevés dans une atmosphère de création permanente.

<< Je n'aime rien autant que cuisiner ! C'est important pour la tête. D'ailleurs, à la maison, mon bureau est au milieu de la cuisine. Là, c'était lors d'une tournée aux îles Fidji. Nous étions à l'hôtel, et j'avais demandé d'avoir accès à la cuisine.

LE DESSIN DE MA MERE
«Ma mère est décédée d'un cancer du cerveau en février 2021. A la fin de sa vie, elle avait du mal à communiquer.
Elle ne pouvait plus écrire ni lettres ni e-mails, alors mes sœurs lui ont acheté un iPad afin qu'elle puisse communiquer malgré tout. Ce dessin, c'est le dernier message qu'elle m'a envoyé pour mon anniversaire. Et sa manière de me donner une clé pour l'avenir. Comme si elle me disait : "Si tu réussis à donner vie aux idées qui sortent de ta tête, tu seras heureux." Cela peut sembler naïf, mais c'est en réalité très profond. Ce dessin a donné son titre à mon disque "Que ta tête fleurisse toujours". La chanson "C'est la vie" lui est dédiée. »

« La France fait partie de moi » : mais qu’est-ce qui plaît tant à Mika dans notre pays ?

 

À l’occasion de la sortie de son sixième album, « Que ta tête fleurisse toujours », le premier entièrement en français, nous avons demandé à l’artiste de nous parler du lien exceptionnel qu’il entretient avec la France, sa langue et sa culture. Révélateur.

 

Mika est à l’hôtel de Crillon, où on le rencontre, comme à la maison. Et à Paris comme chez lui. L’artiste à la double nationalité britannique et américaine, qui est né à Beyrouth et vit entre Miami, l’Angleterre et l’Italie, a habité dans notre capitale les sept premières années de sa vie de globe-trotter. La France a été l’un des premiers pays à faire de lui une popstar, en 2007, avec son premier album, « Life In Cartoon Motion » : 1,5 million d’albums vendus ! Et l’a même invité à chanter avant la finale de la Coupe du monde de rugby.

 

Il n’y a rien d’extraordinaire à ce que notre coach préféré de « The Voice » (où il revient après une parenthèse de quatre ans) ait enregistré un album entier dans notre langue. Son sixième disque, « Que ta tête fleurisse toujours », a été co-écrit avec deux auteurs, un reconnu, Doriand, et une jeune inconnue, Carla De Coignac, composé et produit avec Renaud Rebillaud et Valentin Marceau, alias Marso. Ce n’est pas notre album préféré, mais il ne manque ni de tubes ni d’invitations à danser (« C’est la vie », « Bougez », « Jane Birkin », « Apocalypse Calypso »…) et promet une nouvelle tournée haute en couleur.

 

Son album.

« Quand j’ai annoncé que j’allais faire un album en français, mon entourage avait peur que cela me limite à l’étranger, au moment où l’Asie se reconnecte de manière forte et les États-Unis se vendent à une vitesse pas vue depuis mon premier album : Tu vas t’enfermer dans une niche, m’a-t-on dit. Et c’est exactement le contraire. Les grandes salles où je vais tourner en Angleterre sont déjà complètes, alors que je vais chanter en français. À mon âge, 40 ans, et dans une industrie pop très brutale, il ne faut pas avoir peur d’être artisanal, de se démarquer des autres et de suivre son cœur. La France fait partie de moi, depuis l’enfance. J’ai fait cet album car ma relation à la langue française m’a énormément apporté dans ma vie professionnelle et privée. »

 

Son titre.

« C’est le dernier message de ma mère avant sa mort. C’était un cadeau d’anniversaire. Elle qui le faisait toujours de ses mains, une chemise, un sac, un costume, ne pouvait plus. Alors, on lui a donné un iPad et elle m’a dessiné avec des fleurs sortant de la tête. Je me suis rendu compte bien plus tard que c’était une provocation en plus d’une invitation à rester créatif. Ce fut une libération aussi. Je trouve qu’il faut répondre à la mort avec la même férocité qu’on répond à la vie. C’est une philosophie de vie. »

 

La chanson « Moi, Andy et Paris ».

« C’est la première fois que je consacre une chanson à mon compagnon (Andreas Dermanis), avec qui je suis depuis longtemps. On a eu une énorme dispute il y a quelques années, il est parti à l’aéroport et on ne s’est pas parlé pendant plusieurs semaines. Je devais écrire là-dessus et j’ai instinctivement écrit en français, en sachant qu’il ne comprendrait pas tout de suite. Et, évidemment, il a compris. Et c’est lui qui a insisté pour que je la mette sur l’album. »

 

Jane Birkin.

« Cette chanson, Jane Birkin, je l’ai écrite bien avant sa disparition. Je l’ai rencontrée plusieurs fois. Elle me fascinait, en tant que femme et artiste, et me ramenait toujours à la question de ma vie, d’où je viens ? Elle représente l’érosion des frontières, la sensualité, la nudité et la pudeur, l’intelligence et l’anti-snobisme, dans un monde de plus en plus snob… J’aimerais être comme elle, un jour. Sur cette chanson, je voulais absolument une présence féminine. J’ai demandé à Valérie Lemercier, avec qui je suis devenu très ami, de venir faire de petites interventions. Et c’est elle en studio qui m’a donné l’idée de la chanson Bougez, qui se moque des injonctions à la radio pour votre santé, bougez plus. »

 

Ses lectures en français.

« J’adore Camus, les personnages et les lieux qu’il construit, les questions existentielles qu’il nous pose. Mais je veux citer un livre récent, Beyrouth-sur-Seine de Sabyl Ghoussoub. C’est passionnant. Cela parle intimement d’un sujet très important pour la France, de l’immigration, de l’idée de grandir ici en venant d’ailleurs, comment tu formes ton identité… Je me suis reconnu dans cette histoire. Cela fait du bien de lire pour comprendre sa propre vie et le monde autour de nous, pour nous rendre plus empathique. Je l’ai lu lentement. Je parle assez bien français mais j’ai du mal à le lire et à l’écrire. »
« J’ai des amis partout en France. Après un concert, je conduis pendant une, deux, trois heures. Et ceux que je vais voir le plus, ce sont mes amis dans les restaurants et les hôtels. »

 

Ses chanteuses.

« J’en choisis deux, une du passé, une de l’avenir. Barbara et Juliette Armanet. J’adore les gens qui chantent au piano. Barbara, c’est pas très original, mais je suis tellement geek que je veux entendre ses chansons dans toutes les versions. Comme la Solitude, ma préférée de la chanson française. Je ne reprendrais pas Barbara sur un album, mais sur un concert, avec grand plaisir. Seul au piano. Comme une conversation. Et j’aime aussi Juliette Armanet. À chaque festival que je fais, je veux voir au moins un autre artiste. Et j’ai craqué très fortement sur elle. Qui en pureté est extrêmement forte et fait aussi le show. Et dans ce monde où tout le monde pleure sur Instagram, c’est hyper difficile de faire la showgirl devant 20 000 personnes. Il faut bizarrement se séparer de l’ego pour oser cela. »

 

Son meilleur souvenir parisien.

« J’ai vécu jusqu’à sept ans à Paris. On louait un très joli appartement avec plein de musique et de couleurs. Ma mère avait son atelier de couture dans le salon. Elle avait organisé un shooting de ses créations avec un ami photographe. Je dois avoir 6 ans et, avec mes deux sœurs, on pose devant la tour Eiffel. On est habillés en rose, en noir, avec de grands nœuds. Une photo existe. Je vois ma mère faire ce qu’elle aime avec les gens qu’elle aime. Je pense que tout part de là. J’aimerais bien faire ce que j’aime avec les gens que j’aime. Et tout le monde nous regarde. Ce que je porte est différent, mais pas absurde. C’est créatif, plein d’amour et de fun. C’est aussi un moment clé sur la manière dont je peux vivre ma vie librement. C’est juste avant que mon père (banquier) soit retenu au Koweït. À son retour, il perd son super travail, on part à Londres et la vie bascule. »

 

Ses amis dans l’Hexagone.

« J’en ai beaucoup. Des artistes, designers, écrivains, des gens des médias, comme Marc-Olivier Fogiel, avec qui j’ai une amitié forte. On se dit tout, tout le temps, cash, ça permet d’éviter le confort et avancer. Mais j’ai des amis partout en France, où je voyage énormément en voiture. Après un concert, je conduis pendant une, deux, trois heures. Et ceux que je vais voir le plus, ce sont mes amis dans les restaurants et les hôtels. Une de mes meilleures copines, c’est Brigitte Pages de Oliveira, qui a un hôtel à Arles. À mon dernier Bercy, j’avais invité dans ma loge les serveurs de la brasserie Chez Georges, ma cantine parisienne. Ce soir, c’est à vous d’être servis. J’ai l’impression qu’on fait le même job, qu’on travaille pendant que les autres font la fête, qu’on est tous dans la même troupe de cirque. »

The song “Me, Andy and Paris”.

“It’s the first time that I dedicate a song to my partner (Andreas Dermanis), with whom I have been with for a long time. We had a huge argument a few years ago, he left for the airport and we didn't speak for several weeks. I had to write about it and I instinctively wrote in French, knowing that he wouldn't understand right away. And, obviously, he understood. Jane Birkin.

“This song, Jane Birkin, I wrote long before she died. I met her several times. She fascinated me, as a woman and an artist, and always brought me back to the question of my life, where do I come from? She represents the erosion of boundaries, sensuality, nudity and modesty, intelligence and anti-snobbery, in an increasingly snobbish world... I would like to be like her, one day. On this song, I absolutely wanted a female presence. I asked Valérie Lemercier, with whom I became very good friends, to come and do small interventions. “I love Camus, the characters and places he constructs, the existential questions he asks us. But I want to cite a recent book, Beirut-sur-Seine by Sabyl Ghoussoub. It is exciting. “I choose two, one from the past, one from the future. Barbara and Juliette Armanet. I love people who sing on the piano. Barbara, it's not very original, but I'm such a geek that I want to hear her songs in all versions. Like Solitude, my favorite French song. I wouldn't cover Barbara on an album, but on a concert, with great pleasure. Alone at the piano. Like a conversation. And I also like Juliette Armanet. “I lived in Paris for up to seven years. We rented a very nice apartment with lots of music and colors. My mother had her sewing studio in the living room. She had organized a shooting of her creations with a photographer friend. I must be 6 years old and, with my two sisters, we pose in front of the Eiffel Tower. We are dressed in pink, black, with big bows. A photo exists. I see my mother doing what she loves with the people she loves. I think it all starts from there. I would like to do what I love with the people I love. And everyone is looking at us. What I wear is different, but not absurd. It’s creative, full of love and fun. It is also a key moment in how I can live my life freely. It was just before my father (a banker) was detained in Kuwait.     Que ta tête fleurisse toujours is Mika's new album available since the beginning of December and you are on tour in France and here as well, I think your tour starts here on February 26th in Clermont Ferrand, March 16th in Annecy,  March18th in Grenoble and the day after in Lyon (which is sold out( 
    Mika: Clairmont Ferrand will be a very interesting show because it is actually a test show. If you come to this concert...

    Mika: Actually we added it because we will be there during four, five days and at the end of our stay we'll give this concert and we will find out what it's really like.  
    So Clairmont is where you will be rehearsing? 
    Mika: Yes; exactly and you are going to see the show, you and I will find out about it together. We won't have slept for four or five days, the teams will, like graphic designers start their work after the rehearsal so their work shift starts around 9 PM and stop at 5 AM so it's really a tight schedule. It's going to be interesting to see what happens.

    Mika: What I like a lot is that each person has different favorite songs. The other thing is like as it is in French I was afraid regarding the international market and even if it was released only in a few countries. There are special editions out in other countries like for example in Japan and what's funny is that everything is written in Japanese and translated into Japanese. But there is something really great that's starting to happen: we already started being asked for synching the music for [TV] series in the US.

    Mika: And honestly I love the idea that you can erase and break down this idea of fronteers "If you do this it will cut you from this part of...no one will be interested in England 
     Well...it doesn't matter...now you have to express yourself in a totally different way, in a unique way, create your music following your own story and it means that it will stay true and maybe it will evolve a bit  in an improbable way but it stays interesting. 
    Thanks to this album your French listeners have learned even more things about you. You talked about a musical intimate pop diary. Was it absolutely your will when you decided to write the album in French?  
    Mika: Yeah. I wanted to be candid, to be genuine. Also I had this intention...as I am really a singer songwriter composer, a pop anglo saxon  musician. I come from this tradition  I write with my piano. It's truly a British sort of pop I come from 
    We heard that earlier, Love Today chorus is very pop. 
    Mika: Yeah but my challenge was:  How to do this but with French language? In French. 
    Was it tough, was it complicated to mix both?  
    Mika: Finding how to do it was  challenging but it was a challenge that I loved. At Christmas when I read for example in Le Monde "It is pop in French, it was something. No one understood how happy it made me.  
    It was like a Christmas gift. 
    Mika: Exactly like a Christmas gift probably the best I ever got because I had challenged myself to do this two years before [the album release]   
    Since you give your family asparagus you can't expect them to get [nice] gifts (laughing) 
    Mika: Wait a second, don't laugh at  asparagus. How do you cook your asparagus? 
    Don't ask (laughing) I don't know anything about cooking. I had kebab for lunch. 
    Mika: Asparagus. For asparagus you need...how do you say "string"  
    Woman: Un fil [ficelle]  
    Not a thong right?(laughing) 
    Mika: So put the string around the asparagus (le fil) and you put the asparagus standing like a flower bouquet 
    I think about our listeners who just tuned in and heard "put a thong around the asparagus it is very very wierd. It is a very particular mood.  
    Mika: We are in Lyon [famous for its good cooking] peveryone knows that what I'm saying is extremely serious. Then you have to boil them especially the white asparagus and   off the heat under the water. And then, very salty the water of course and for the full flavor you need to leave the asparagus in the water for twenty minutes with the thong around so that the taste and the flavors get into the asparagusagain. Twenty minutes later you eat them they are perfect. You cut the thong and you get into bliss.

    I am going to get this carved on a plate and hang it in my kitchen. This is perfect (laughing) 
    The title of the album is "Que ta tête fleurisse toujours" C'est un hommage à ta maman, le premier single aussi que l'on écoute toute la journèe sur Radio Scoop "C'est la vie" It has a very difficult theme and yet everyone feels like partying on that song and I find this totally amazing and it's an art in which you are a absolute master this sort of mix between a difficult theme, sadness emotion and still we want to [dance] it's colorful, it's fun. How  do you manage to create this? 
    Mika: Maybe because I need it. 
    What's your recipe? You already gave us the asparagus recipe. 
    Mika: It's true. I think it's because I need it. I started making music because I needed to.  I felt invisible ok and l would listen to I was a nine years old kid I felt totally invisible. I was fourteen and I felt like I had no value and I would listen to losers who said in songs "I"m a loser but I'm terrific" and when you hear someone saying "I'm a loser baby but I am a hero as well" it gives you ideas, it changes your head and you tell yourself maybe it would be a good idea if I could find a way to do the same. 
    In this album you talk about sad things but also about lighter things and what surprised me is that there are naughty songs in this album. 
    Mika: Yes 
    You are a naughty boy 
    Mika: Yes. If you say so. (laughing)  
    And you said it is easier to say this in French than in another language. Why? 
    Mika: Yeah because I told myself in my head,  in English because I always express myself in English in my songs and everyone understands and in French no one understands. Of course what I'm saying is totally stupid but this was e how I felt. 
    Nevertheless we understood in France. 
    Mika: Yes I know. I know and now I'm aware of this because I'm going to be on the stage and sing some songs and this is the moment when I become aware of this. And during the concert I will sing Apocalypse Calypso which is a song of the album and I say things like "a bubble, we f♡♡♡"  
    Yeah 
    Mika: And you can't say that in English it's ugly. In French it's not ugly 
    Yes it's a bit poetic. We almost feel like following you if you allow me (laughing) 
    There are naughty songs, the tribute to your mum, and more you freed yourself in a rather exceptionnal way to the point that you talk about your life with your lover 
    Mika: That's another example that one when I will sing it on stage  
    You had never crossed that point 
    Mika: No. No exactly. I decided to talk about my private life, about something that hurt us very much, about a problem that could have led to a break up. And it's true. Now everything is ok but I have to sing it on stage. And he already explained to me that he will be drinking a beer and a half during each show exactly at that moment he will go to the bar when l'll sing "Moi, Andy et Paris" He swore to me he 8doesn't want to be in the venue because it is too much for him. And he says it sincerely. He says ok you put it on the album. The melody is beautiful. But if you think I will endure watching you singing this so ng in front of, I don't know 5000 15000 people, you think I am a b*****y idiot. And he will put his drink on me.  
    It's a present from Mika. But aside from the problem with this song it is said that your career has often created difficulties in your couple. 
    Mika: It's always the case for all the artists even if they don't talk about it and also for their families. It changes the dynamic. You and I we are talking, we are talking about things my family will never talk about with let's say the same transparency.  Even when I do interviews. Before Christmas I did very intense interviews. And when you talk about intimate things of course it provoked the lions 
     who came to me through the media to talk to me about things that hurt of course. If I don't answer it can turn bad. If I answer in a transparent way, it's good, it's genuine but are those things easy to hear. 
    For people close to you? For your loved ones? 
    Mika: For my sisters and my brother. It's not easy for them. So at some moments I tell them you're not going to like this, don't watch, it involves you but  
    So sometimes you do TV and radio interviews but after you message your loved ones to tell them "Don't watch/ don't listen to/don't read this interview.  
    Mika: No. I tell them "I answer to questions I was asked and I know that maybe one person who is talking to something very intimate  that belongs to all of you, that's the way it is, it's part of the way  that I have decided to write, to live my life, to tell stories. I do it with lots of respect for you but if you don't want to watch it is at 7 PM  evening  
    Man: on TF1  
    Mika: My sister has a child and on Friday evenings he might be watching TV. I don't want him to see this. It's just to explain to you that it's not always easy to have someone in the family doing this and the others don't do this public job and it can be disruptive in many ways and instead of hiding this in a cupboard or under a bed it's better to talk about it. 
    Man: Your news is that you are back at The Voice. 
    Mika: Yes 
    Man: And quite frankly TF1 spoiled you. I don't know if you have seen the trailer for it and for your return but it's amazing!  
    Mika: No. Yes I'm kidding you. 
    Man: You are a star, a pop idol, it must feel amazing. 
    Mika: It's mainly funny and my friends, the other coaches, they played along.No it shows a bit the fresh look  and the generosity of this season which is an excellent season. 
    Man: The show is being recorded now. 
    Mika: I did several seasons so to be back and to be back with the energy there is this season, that is wonderful. In all honesty you're gonna love it. 
    Man: Are there difference between the seasons you were involved in before and this one? 
    Mika: Yes huge ones but it's for me to tell you. Watch it and you will really see.  
    Man: It's coming very soon on TF1 ,  The Voice returns with Mika. Are you still surprised by the show? 
    Mika: When is it going to be on TV? 
     Man: I think mid february if I'm not wrong. Star Academie is over mid february and I think it starts right after or a few weeks after. We'll talk about it again on radio scoop of course. Niko who is in front of me is not feeling well because he doesn't know when it will start either. (Laughing) Do you still get surprised by the contestants? By the voices you hear in The Voice?  
    Mika: Yeah 
    Man: Really, you still get surprised? 
    Mika: Yeah yeah really and also I think that some contestants who are there, many of them truly have what it takes to really have a career and songs. Sometimes they don't have the songs of course but it's the challenge for everyone but they have this thing, this magic, this artistic soul. More than ever. Of course there are huge voices but also once in a while one has something special and fitting. And there is something special which is rare about The Voice French edition and you don't know how rare it is that France is the only country that launched that many careers. 
    Man: Que ta tête fleurisse toujours is Mika's new album available since the beginning of December. Mika is on tour in France and close to Lyon on February 25th in Clairmont zénith, on March 16th in Annecy, on March 18th in Grenoble and on March 19th in Lyon. Radio Scoop Interview

 

 Mika: I cook. 

 You cook so you eat after. 

 

Mika: And this year it was a total disaster. 

 

Ah a disaster? 

 

Mika: Yes you see I have a house in the US and the tradition is that each year the whole family gets togethee at my place and I cook and in all the American movies there is always that thing, that big ham. 

Yeah 

Mika: With cloves everywhere and pineapple stuff. 

So you tried that this year? 

 Mika: Yes. I cook well but I ...  It was better on TV 

 

Mika: Yes I don't cook that type of thing a lot, I don't cook often American dishes. For example turkey, you know those big turkeys, those huge things you see in movies they are not good. Anyway the ham, I cooked the ham, it was fine, with the right shape but I had cooked it ahead so I told myself I would leave it in the oven but I forgot to turn it on low so  

It was overcooked and you couldn't eat it?  Did you end up eating at macdonald's?  

Mika: Everyone ended up eating asparagus, brocoli, smoked salmon and pasta with tomato sauce.  

    It doesn't sound like a dream meal, but if it is a meal with you why not?
