Mika in Italian press - 2024

Michelle and Mika joke about a well-known (and funny) mistake that he made years ago on X Factor, saying " Ho ciusato" (I have chosen) instead of the correct "ho scelto."   Actually what he did at the time was logical: He mixed "choose" ( Italianizing an English verb) with a common ending of Italian past participles ("- ato").

Mika, sold out a Londra in attesa dell’Italia: «Non vedo l’ora di esibirmi a Lucca»

Prosegue il percorso live di Mika che ha fatto tappa a Londra, in un Eventim Apollo sold out. Unica data italiana a Lucca il 19 luglio.

Strasburgo, Reims, Grenoble, Lione, Marsiglia, Parigi. E ancora Ginevra, Amsterdam, Bruxelles, Berlino, Brighton, Wolverhampton.

Mika, sold out in London waiting for Italy: «I can't wait to perform in Lucca»

Mika's live journey continues, having stopped in London, at a sold out Eventim Apollo. Only Italian date in Lucca on July 19th.

Strasbourg, Reims, Grenoble, Lyon, Marseille, Paris. And again Geneva, Amsterdam, Brussels, Berlin, Brighton, Wolverhampton. These are just some of the stops on the Apocalypse Calypso Tour with which Mika is performing throughout Europe and which, on Tuesday 9 April, saw the artist on stage at a sold out London Eventim Apollo.

“A big and ambitious project, a new pop-conceptual-rock tour. We sing and dance, but there is also no shortage of more serious, touching and reflective moments." This is what Mika said during the tour. The setlist includes the best-known songs from his career up to the most recent from his latest album of unreleased songs entirely made in French 'Que ta tête fleurisse toujours'.

The European tour of the British pop star of Lebanese origins will also stop in Italy, on Friday 19 July, with a special concert at the Lucca Summer Festival.

“It's no secret that I really like Tuscany and in particular Lucca, where I now almost feel at home. I can't wait to bring this magical circus, like the one in the cartoon Dumbo, to the stage of the Lucca Summer Festival, where I finally have the opportunity to perform."

“Today fame is fragile, only imperfection can make us special”

LONDON — We wait for Mika “Go dot” for an hour and a half at the Eventim Apollo in London where he will play soon. But it's worth it. «Forgive me, I'm not on tour!». And what a tour, the spectacular “Apocalypse Calypso” from the latest album in French Que ta t te fleurisse toujours by the British-American-Lebanese pop star adored in Italy. Already about twenty dates overseas, tonight in Dublin, grand finale in Lucca on July 19th.

And the other night in Manchester, Mika, aka Michael Holbrook Penniman Jr.

«What a concert. Unforgettable. People were so crazy you couldn't hear the mix. But a mythical city: the Stone Roses, Joy Division, New Order, Morrissey and the Smiths, Oasis."

Is this tour a mystical journey?

« a musical but also emotional journey, which combines theatre, songs, shows, electronics: spectators enter a parallel and immersive world. stuff that isn't typically done at pop concerts. It is no coincidence that for the visual effects we relied on Rodeo FX, the company responsible for the Marvel films, but also Stranger Things, Harry Potter...».

But how does it feel when you've just turned 40?

«With an even more ferocious determination, vision and artistic sensitivity. I feel like I have more imagination than when I was 35."

And do you also feel freer?

«Freedom comes and goes. You have to win it back every week, in this world. But I certainly feel more courage and joy in defending my ideas, and in seeing tiny details become essence in my works."

Are you a perfectionist?

"Not at all. Imperfect beauty is the most precious thing, in music and art, even in politics. But to get to this poem you have to be very trained. plus one session in the preparation, to then lose control live, and not be ashamed or scared of it. Because this is one of the most liberating and delicious things. It comes naturally to us at 18 years old. But to live better, we must always provoke the imperfect poetry in us. Even at 40 years old."

Even more so in a world dominated by the false perfection of artificial intelligence?

«And from the presumed perfection that many seek when posting a selfie. So they become avatars of avatars. But unfortunately online everyone attacks everyone. Therefore, for many, "being perfect" in such a conventional way also means being less attackable. like a shield in war."

But this way we are all more and more equal.

«That's the risk. But I too am falling into the AI trap."

Which?

«In the car I connected ChatGpt to the stereo. I spend time chatting with him: I discover incredible things, conversing for hours about everything I don't know."

But how much harm can artificial intelligence do to music?

«We are in an interesting moment of transition. Record sales are collapsing but concerts, those with human beings on stage, have more and more audiences. To survive, you must therefore identify your niche, hold on to it, develop and defend the things that make you different, special. Today, even hugely successful songs can easily disintegrate. It makes it but more fragile than it used to be."

A world so torn by conflicts and tensions, perhaps on the verge of World War III, what impact does it have on your art?

«Politics is increasingly a stage. In this it resembles music a lot. With one difference: if international politics is increasingly fueled by hatred and fear, the most precious asset of music is love, openness, solidarity. This pushes me more and more towards artistic extremism, as a bridge to bridge this abyss between art and reality. It reminds me of the greatest performance ever." Which? «David Byrne, dressed in grey, incredibly moving his knees, with his body that seems to be quoting a work by Brecht. This I mean by glorious extremism."

Would a new LiveAid be needed to raise awareness in an increasingly torn and violent world?

"I don't know. For “Global Citizen” they contracted the Eiffel Tower to Billie Eilish. But it doesn't seem to me that it has shaken the world or consciences. People addicted to stadiums. But certainly only music and a true sense of community can save us. as with talents: when they become a fake, an appearance, they are worth nothing. trashy. And the public notices it. We must always rise higher to conquer it. In England I hosted the talent show The Piano. At first they laughed at me for the idea of playing a piano next to the bathrooms. Instead it was poetry and it was a success."

How long has it been since you returned to your problematic Lebanon?

«A few years. In 2021 the state gave me the highest honor and passport for the “I Love Beirut” charity concert. Then I wrote an article critical of Lebanese politics in Le Monde and... poof! Everything vanished."

But you, sublime nomad, where do you feel at home?

"Depends. I could stay in America, but I would miss France. Or in England, but I would miss the old man from San Casciano who sews my live hats. Or my trainer in Tuscany who talks to me about Descartes and Locke while we lift 40 kilo weights."

Feeling at home therefore a "state of mind"?

"No. And feeling good with the people around you. You can have all the wealth and freedom in this world. But if you don't feel part of a community, your life will still be humiliating."

Talking for hours with ChatGPT... now nothing surprises me anymore. He probably asked AI what songs to put on his setlist. 🙈

That is a very bright idea :lmfao:That way fans can not blame the setlist on him :lmfao:Because with all the songs to chose from nowadays he feared some would be mad at him for skipping their fav song or keeping one thsy don't like :floor:

Joke aside I loved his setlist in Rennes even though it was different from my "dream list' but my wish to hear him sing live Apocalypse Calypso and Sweetie banana was granted and I loved Talk About You and Moi, Andy et Parus live as well as Feels like fire :cloud: and Bougez was so perfect to start :dance_man:Mika live songs are :swoon:and new live songs are :cloud:

Thank you Mika :cheer: and AI :naughty:

well, I think most people didn't complain about his French setlist, but only about the international / UK one without all the French songs. :dunno: If he based his decision on a combination of timeliness and streaming numbers, which probably is what AI would do, then the French setlist for France and the old LICM one for the UK make sense. So my comment might have been a joke, but I wouldn't completely exclude that it might be the truth - whatever he based his decision on, it surely wasn't what most of his dedicated fans wanted. And the rest of the crowd probably was fine with it, but he could have convinced them of his newer songs as well. The crowd in Dublin went wild when EMD started. Anyway, I'm digressing - we have the setlist discussions thread for that...

As for the interview, he says some things that I absolutely agree with ... but some of it is probably more wishful thinking than reality. He has really good arguments for not being a perfectionist, but imo he still is, even if he tries to tell us otherwise. As I said on some other thread, this detailed rehearsing "to then lose control live" is maybe what he wishes to do, but I'm not sure he manages that second part of it. To me, his gigs miss the spontaneity and yeah, well, the imperfection of what his concerts used to be like. There are moments, rare ones, but you can see that he tries to avoid it. Like when in Berlin he thought the German translation was taking too long and he said "this is like a bad dream" - you could see he was really uncomfortable and wanting to get out of the situation - while at previous tours he would have joked and laughed about it. And at the same time he said in some of the interviews that he likes, even needs, destabilization. He also said he likes the banners by fans and he likes that they destabilize him ... but when I had a banner in London, asking for 30 Second(e)s in any language, I had the impression that he looked annoyed for a moment when he read it. That made me feel bad and I decided I wouldn't draw any banners again, I can use my time for better things than making him and myself feel uncomfortable.

Back to the interview...

Therefore, for many, "being perfect" in such a conventional way also means being less attackable. like a shield in war."

But this way we are all more and more equal.

To survive, you must therefore identify your niche, hold on to it, develop and defend the things that make you different, special.

I think he answers the above problem with the second quote - maybe without realizing that this is the solution. Apart from the fact that the interviewers questions and Mika's replies mix Social Media and AI as if it was the same thing: What distinguishes humans from AI and from each other on social media is their uniqueness. And if you are yourself instead of trying to be perfect, I think THAT makes you less attackable - because no one can argue with you defending to be who you are. They can try ofc, the haters WILL try, because someone who stands out instead of being a copy of everything else (which btw reminds me of the animated GK promo video from 2007 with the pop star factory) will get attention ... which is the currency of the internet. But only you know how to be you, so if you dare to be yourself and show your uniqueness, anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is automatically wrong, they have no clue what they're even talking about. However, I get that this isn't easy, especially for someone who has a lot to lose. And then, you have to know who you are and not change your mind every day (well... ok if that is part of your personality to change your mind every day, you can even own that, lol! :lol3:) - but especially not listen to other people who think you should be like this or that. If you do that, of course that makes you more attackable online, no matter if you're trying to be yourself or trying to be perfect. Dunno if I'm making sense, lol, sometimes the thoughts are so clear in my head but putting them into words doesn't work. :lol3:

I agree with him on that, and what he says before, that music is love, openness, solidarity. So well, I would say the values transported in music (but also in other art) is what can save us, and to me love is at the center of this. If there is enough love in the world, hate can't win. That's one of the reasons why I was so keen on hearing Tiny Love or 30 Secondes at the gigs, because these songs are so full of love and positive energy, and I need much more of this instead of "no hope no love no glory" (tho Happy Ending ofc is a beautiful song, and at least it has "a little bit of love" :lol3:)
