Absolute cracking vibes in the balcony

Not one person wasn't enjoying themselves (from my sight). And everyone decided to stand up and dance for most of the songs. I almost forgot I had a seated ticket (except for the times when we had the luxury to sit and rest our tired legs )

And the opening act with the DJ was not bad at all! I like how she turned the whole venue into a pre-show party:dance_man:

Mika at Eventim Apollo review:

A joyous, golden pop extravaganza

The latest unexpected item to appear on pop culture’s bingo card is a renaissance for the polyglot superstar Mika, who is enjoying a new surge of popularity off the back of his heroic turn at Eurovision 2022: the singer didn’t just co-host the contest for Italy, he raced through a flawless medley of his Noughties hits without seeming to break a sweat.

Though some people have but faint memories of Mika as the relentlessly cheerful singer-songwriter behind 2007 hits Grace Kelly and Relax, Take It Easy, he’s also cultivated a dedicated fanbase in the intervening years.

Filled to the brim with high-pop brilliance that many of today’s contemporary recording artists would envy, his London performance was a tidal wave of energetic, progressive dance songs, mixed with some unbeatable goosebump-raising nostalgia.

The wonderfully camp homecoming at London’s Hammersmith Apollo began with the first of Mika’s many costumes. In vintage Miley Cyrus fashion, our Beirut-born, London and Paris raised popstar began the show from an oversized birdcage, dressed in a crimson red suit with anatomical angel wings to boot. An order was issued right away: in order to save our souls, we must dance. So far, so theatrical.

His immediately energetic movements resembled that of some kind of supernatural creature. No thanks to the prop angel wings, which broke after the first song.

Following the first costume change of the night, Mika dropped to his knees to lament the failure, praying to a deity he labelled the “God of Hammersmith Apollo”. The crowd stood with him in solemn, pop-fuelled prayer.

Expectations were high given the star’s electric performance at Eurovision in 2022, and fans piled into the venue dressed in attire that Harry Styles would certainly approve of. The crowd was peppered with occasional Pride flags (one wielded by a person dressed as a banana) and the odd full sequin, glittery two-piece.

When the time came to perform 2007 hit Big Girl (You Are Beautiful), inspired by the old Orange County Butterfly Lounge, the singer embarked on a cross-venue odyssey that we’ve not seen since Lenny Kravitz cropped up in the upper stalls at Wembley Arena in 2018.

Within the blink of an eye and sporting a neon pink, sequin-adorned suit (at this point, it was impossible to keep track of the costume changes) Mika danced through the stalls right up into the gods. Concert etiquette may have fallen off a cliff more generally in a post-Covid world, but this crowd felt different.

Perhaps the most tender part of the evening was the singer’s explanation of how his most iconic songs were written, many alongside his siblings in an Earl’s Court basement, roughly a 10-minute drive from the sold-out venue.

Recalling a wide-eyed childhood which saw him stare out of a car window to glimpse the name in lights which a signified headline show at the Apollo, it was evident the crowd felt touched to be part of his first performance at the venue since 2010.

Two encores and multiple, several minute-long standing ovations later, the backlit curtains closed on a dance-fuelled night led by a supremely talented vocalist who never once faltered, despite running, singing, jumping and gallivanting for two hours straight.

Mika, sold out a Londra in attesa dell’Italia: «Non vedo l’ora di esibirmi a Lucca»

Prosegue il percorso live di Mika che ha fatto tappa a Londra, in un Eventim Apollo sold out. Unica data italiana a Lucca il 19 luglio.

Strasburgo, Reims, Grenoble, Lione, Marsiglia, Parigi. E ancora Ginevra, Amsterdam, Bruxelles, Berlino, Brighton, Wolverhampton.

As we are approaching the London gig I would like to get back to my idea of a fan action with flags.

We don't need to ask everybody present in the venue to have a flag of his/her respective country.

But if a part of us lifts a flag during one song it would give an effect.

So I propose to make flags not bigger than A4 format.

As Mika doesn't sing Passager, I propose to raise our flags during Any Other World.

It's almost at the end of the gig just before We Are Golden and I think Mika will keep this part of the setlist.

I saw :uk:and :france: flags in this video !

TVD Live Shots:

Mika at the Eventim Apollo, 4/9

Entering the Eventim Apollo on a brisk Tuesday evening in London felt like stepping into a chapter of my personal soundtrack.

My first encounter with Mika’s music was a chance stumble upon “Grace Kelly” while living in San Francisco. As someone deeply appreciative of bands like Jellyfish, Queen, and Badfinger, Mika’s sound struck a chord with me—bold, inventive, and refreshingly unique. That track alone was a game-changer, and diving into his album was akin to discovering a pop music gem, brimming with disco, funk, and those falsettos and harmonies that instantly pull you in. It was as if the energy of the Scissor Sisters’ debut had been reborn.

Mika’s 2024 tour kicks off on the heels of a spectacular year. His French-language album not only snagged the “French-language Album of the Year” at the Pure Charts Awards, but he’s also made waves on television, earning critical acclaim for his roles on The Voice in France and The Piano in the UK—the latter winning Best Original Programme at the 2024 Broadcast Awards. His venture into film scoring also earned him a nomination for Breakthrough Composer of the Year by the International Film Music Critics Association, showcasing his remarkable versatility as an artist. To say he’s at the peak of his powers would be an understatement.

Seeing Mika live again was like reuniting with an old friend. His Apocalypse Calypso Tour might have featured just one song from his latest album Que ta tête fleurisse toujours, but it didn’t matter—the energy was through the roof. The crowd was pumped, eager for a night packed with Mika’s greatest hits. He delivered big time, diving into the songs that first hooked us, making sure the evening was filled with those signature Mika moments we all came for.

To fully grasp Mika’s unique artistry, you really had to be there. The show kicked off with an unforgettable spectacle—Mika, decked out in massive red wings and enclosed in a symbolic cage, delivering “Bougez.” His performance swung from beautiful to intense, capturing the full spectrum of human emotion. From that first song, it was full steam ahead. Mika was on a mission to energize every person in the crowd, keeping us grinning from ear to ear for the next two hours.

The setlist was a meticulously curated journey through Mika’s

discography, with a significant nod to his groundbreaking album Life in Cartoon Motion. Hits like “Big Girl” were not just performed; they were an invitation for the audience to partake in a communal celebration of music as Mika waltzed through the crowd, blurring the line between the artist and his admirers.

The climax of the show was a cascade of anthems—”Popular Song,” “Grace Kelly,” “Happy Ending,” and “Love Today”—each a testament to Mika’s prowess as a songwriter and a performer. The encore, featuring a heartfelt rendition of “Any Other World” followed by the euphoric “We Are Golden,” served as a reminder of the unifying power of music, especially in times marred by uncertainty and discord.

Mika’s show in London was a delightful escape from the daily grind, a musical voyage that transported us from life’s worries into a world of pure joy. Amidst the uncertainties of our times, his performance served as a radiant beacon of positivity. With his theatrical charm and flawless vocals, he created an enchanting experience that captivated us all.

It was more than just a concert; it was a collective moment of escapism, a chance for everyone to leave their troubles behind and bask in the uplifting melodies of Mika’s music. While he’s undoubtedly a sensation across Europe, one can’t help but wonder when the States will catch onto this infectious musical magic. Was there anything that could have made this show better? I think not, but it did pop into my mind that having Jake Shears as the special guest would have been an excellent fit, albeit a pipe dream.

Here is my report from London gig.

I flew to London on the day of the concert. I landed at Luton airport early in the morning and I had plenty of free time until the evening. Especially since I thoughtfully bought a ticket on the balcony. The weather did not spoil the fans who had been waiting in line since 4am. Very strong wind, rain every now and then. Sometimes there are glimpses of sunshine. I visited the fans at noon. I said hello and exchanged a few words.

With such weather, I skipped sightseeing and spent most of the time in the hotel room.

Around six o'clock in the evening I met @Kasia Mousa - a fan who has been living in London for years. Her friend and her son were with her, as was Kasia's son. Both eight-year-old boys have recently become big fans of Mika and were already looking forward to their first concert. I gave them glowing bracelets which they happily wore on their wrists.

At 6:30 p.m. the public began to be admitted. It went quite smoothly except for one glitch. Before the concert, you could buy the right to "fast entry" - a special express queue - for £25. As it turned out, security began to let everyone in at once: those from the "fast entry" and those from the "normal" queue.

I found my seat (Kasia, her friend and children were sitting together in the next rows) and waited for the concert to start. On either side of me were MFC fans whom I met for the first time. They also got glowing bracelets from me. Hello @teenagedreamer98 and a girl from Mexico living in Spain (sorry I can find your nickname here).

The curtain was hung. So there will probably be a cage and wings too! There were none in Wolverhampton or Manchester due to the size of the theaters.

A few minutes after 8:30 p.m. we heard the intro to Bougez. Of course the audience went hysterical! And no one was bothered by the fact that at the very end of the song the left wing broke. Even Mika wouldn't let the technician help him. He just sort of managed it by himself for the last few seconds of the song.

Mika alluded to this during Origin Of Love, when in his prayer he thanked God for destroying his wings and causing him to fall hard to the ground. Does this mean that now he can feel free and have fun with his audience? But it doesn't really matter because "I thank you that you found me," Mika said, pointing to the audience.

Mika performed at the Hammersmith Apollo 14 years ago.

Mika's family home is located near this place and as he recalled, as a child, when he passed this hall, he often checked whose name was above the entrance...

I think that every concert in London is like a return to the beginning of his career. I hope that after such a long absence from the British market, we will see further concert dates this time. Maybe after the next English-language album is released?

Mika returned to his childhood memories several times. Like when he was 13 yo and dancing in his room pretending to be Michel Hutchence from INXS.

London also had the chance to hear Billy Brown and Good Guys.

The audience sang every lyric very loudly. And I love such moments!!!!

By the way, look at the beautiful scenery, which is only visible from a  distance. When I was near the stage, such beautiful details escaped me.

As I mentioned, I had a seat on the balcony. So I was waiting for Big Girl. And for Mika, who gets to this part of the venue via various routes and stairs. Well, and he came!! It's amazing to see the reaction of people who suddenly see next to them an artist who was standing on stage a moment ago.

There was a group of young men sitting in the row in front of me who weren't very active. They didn't sing with us. They very rarely got up from their seats. And Mika stopped about a meter away from them. And everyone jumped up from their seats and even started turning their backs on Mika and taking selfies!

I've seen this reaction many times at concerts. Mika stands three feet in front of you, and instead of looking at him, you turn your back to him to take a selfie. What a strange world.

By the way. After the concert, I found out that Gabriel Lobao and Iris - participants of The Voice who live in London - were sitting on my right. You can even see Iris's face in my video. I didn't see Gabriel. Someone must have stand between us.

Mika also sang Popular. It's a song written based on the melody from the musical Wicked, which is still performed in London. I think it was the first time I heard this song live. And of course I sang loudly with the audience!!!!

Of course, you must watch the wonderful performance of Happy Ending with an English audience.

I won't describe every song performed that night.

Just Any Other World. If you look closely, you can see cards with flags appearing in the first rows. This was our fan action. There weren't many flags, but it wasn't about quantity.

Fans also showed their flags on the balcony. I had Polish one, of course. The fan next to me had a Mexican flag. Kasia, her friend and the boys had flags: Polish, Lithuanian, Egyptian and Palestinian. It was too dark to record it. Pity…

I have seen a video somewhere with Mika's face during this song but I can't find it now. (was it Karin's?)

In conclusion, the UK concerts were very important for Mika. It was obvious how moved he was by the audience's reception. It's true that we didn't hear French songs, and not every theater had all props on the stage, but was that the most important thing?

I hope that Mika will release another album in English and I will be able to go on another tour with him, this time in Great Britain.

More videos to watch on my YouTube channel.

After the concert, of course, we waited for Mika. However, his manager told us not to wait because Mika would not stop.

The next day he had to get up early and go to record at The Piano.

And The Piano is the next stop in my travels with Mika. Next week I'm going to Manchester to record the finale of the second season of The Piano!
