  1. Although, if he was a close friend, I'm sure we'd talk him into creating us a custom art piece - maybe a birthday present! A big canvas painting to go up on a wall would be nice, don't you think? Hehe for once, maybe it's good if your friends aren't raging Mikaholics
  2. I think if we'd been close friends prior to his record deal, it would be a bit weird to have posters and things on the walls. I did frame my LICM booklet and stick it on the wall, though - and I think I'd still have done it if he was a friend of mine. Only, it would of course be signed and have some cheesy message about sticking by him through the craziness I think the idol aspect also has to do with the fact that, as fans, we only see the good. If Mika was an old college pal, we'd see the real and maybe not-so-charming bits: maybe he laughed and sprayed chocolate milk out of his nose. Maybe he got drunk and got a citation for peeing on a tree in public. Maybe he comes home and takes off his dirty socks and leaves 'em in a stinky pile in the doorway. And when you have a chocolate-snorting, tree-peeing, sock-abandoning friend, you might love 'em just the same; but you don't particularly idolize them. When he's a face on YouTube and a voice on CD, he can really be "anything we like." That's my two cents, anywhoo!
  3. I am so excited, too! Especially since I'm going to have to strategically plot which gig to go to based on a complex formula involving travel time, venue size, and the average distance of the sun from the horizon at noon... Oh dear, I think I've already lost my mind!
  4. Here's Babelfish's (http://babelfish.altavista.com/) slightly messed-up translation, but you can get the gist: Why don't you like me without making me try?! This is a passage from its first single. After years of hard work and still not that desired plate contract, he decided write a number to express its frustrations on the music industry. That correctly this number its large opening would become... MIKA are called this artist with their own sound, eigenzinnige attire and behaviour what he defines as ` 100x itself. Correctly these factors now prove him to he stand: for the in gestation. With its debuutalbum life in cartoon motion and first tournee is, is he busy with creating worldwide reputation! These topmuzikant became born in 1983, in Beirut, Lebanon under the name mica Penniman. Already rapidly moved he with its parents to Paris, where he lived up to its ninth life year. Then they left to London. To make its international character complete: its mother ends up Lebanon and its father is of American source. As an artist he decided c in its name in a k change because was pronounced rather frequently found oneself. Arrived in London, he had enough time terrible on school. He forgot how he had read and writes and talked a time. On this he was suspended for a half year, to recover itself. In this time discovered he that songwriting were its vocation. Music ensured that he came with both legs on the ground. With the aid of a terrifying Russian song teacher he could this way develop that he everywhere what baantjes got. He has made the virtuoso pianospel itself own. After these years of hard labour he arrived at a plate society. He wants money in exchange of as little as possible intervention. After a number of keren has been rejected wrote out he the number Grace Kelly frustration on the music industry. Him brought this single all what worldwide reputation. Beginning 2007 came then its debuutalbm life in cartoon motion in the schappen. The numbers which shine on its cd are lively, but have also a deeper meaning. With its voice range of four octaven, lively numbers with contents, virtuoso pianospel, character and perseverance to MIKA everything in house to become large to a muzikant and has remained. He was already sounded by 130 music experts by means of the BBC as most interesting newcomer in the profession. Proven to be by the years gone its these surveys a nice indication for the future.
  5. Amanda (Latin) Loveable Corinne (Greek) Maiden Ergo, I'm a loveable maiden! Which means - anyway you want to, anyway you've got to LOVE LOVE ME!
  6. Hey Canadians (and others who may be lurking about this thread)! In celebration of our nation's birthday, give this a shot: http://www.cbc.ca/citizenship/test.html It's a sampling of questions from the citizenship test. I got 18/20 - not to bad, eh!!!
  7. Ahh! That is the most fantastically random amazing experience! You go, girl!!! I might wish I was you just a bit. Yaaaay!
  8. I'd sit and talk to him! Poolside, over margaritas. Or we'd go hiking through the Canadian rockies. But, mostly I'd just like to talk to him - he's got a beautful mind. We can thow in him singing a few songs on his keyboard, too. But mostly, talking over margaritas. Yes, that would be good.
  9. I squeaked out loud when I read this! What a great excuse for me to come down to California again. Since there's absolutely no way Mika will play redneck Calgary, Alberta, I'm so hoping for a fall date in Vancouver, Seattle, Denver, or anywhere in California. Not sure if I'll make the journey for a festival appearance, though - an actual headlining concert would trump festival performance. But, I love Del Mar! My fiance's company is headquartered there. We were thisclose to moving there earlier this year. Sigh.
  10. I could just imagine... Jack: Anyhow, enough chat - get over here. Mika: Uhh - excuse me? Jack: I need to smell you. It's what all the cool kids are talking about these days. And I didn't smell you at the last gig - so clearly I'm behind the times. Mika: Um - well I've been on stage, I might be a bit sweaty. Jack: Oh, well in that case... Other nasally-inclined Mika fan: Shove over, you! HE'S MINE FOR THE SNIFFING!!!
  11. Ahh, thank you for posting! Lollipop Girl(s) gets a cameo, too! And the little girl in the denim jacket. She rocks.
  12. No kidding - your family had luck on your side that day! I was in grade 12, and had skipped class that day - I didn't hear about it until like 4pm, and by then everything was on instant replay on every TV channel. The 2005 London bombings were scary because my fiance has a lot of family in London, and coincedentally all but his favourite auntie were visiting us in Canada at the time - but we had a hard time getting ahold of her for quite a while. I'm sure there are many, many stories like that. Things like the London attacks, 9/11, various wars - it's almost surreal. I was reading up on the Lebanese civil war (the one that caused Mika's family to end up in Paris) and I couldn't help but think how tough that must have been on Mika's family. I mean, in the early part of 1983 Mika's sisters would have been quite young, and then with another one on the way amidst all the turmoil. That must have been so challenging for his family (and countless others in that area). Here's a the Wikipedia entry I was reading about it, in case anyone is interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lebanese_Civil_War#International_intervention:_1982-84
  13. I never knew the word "grapefruit" could sound so strangely sexy. Thanks for posting!
  14. I agree! I think, in summary, it's basically just examining the differences between certain aspects of the hip-hop scene that focus on things that aren't real to most people (e.g, $100,000 jewelry), versus taking things that ARE real and commonplace and putting them on display. Hip-hop can be considered escapism because of how unreal it is. Mika's music can be considered escapism because of how it glorifies the real. It's basically a study into modern popular culture, really. I'd seriously love to have a round table discussion on this topic. Only by "round table" I mean "poolside". Jack_Violet, snakes&latters, Violet_Sky - do you drink margaritas? We'll invite Mika and we'll all share our thoughts on this topic. Cheers!
  15. Bwahaha. Touché. My hat is off to you there
  16. *hugs the entirety of England* Yes, go and have a good time! I really hope nothing else comes up that gets in the way of you guys going and really enjoying yourselves.
  17. Posted on Contactmusic.com (original link: http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/mika%20slams%20unrealistic%20music%20videos_1035684 ) MIKA SLAMS 'UNREALISTIC' MUSIC VIDEOS British pop star MIKA has slammed performers who make "unrealistic" music videos. The flamboyant Grace Kelly singer admits he hates indulgent visual accompaniments to tracks, and believes the use of lavish sports cars and expensive jewellery is escapism at its worst. He says, "I don't like the idea of escapism. "Escapism is all those materialistic hip-hop videos, where you see good-looking girls jumping out of Maserati sports cars wearing knee-high boots and $100,000 (GBP50,000)-worth of diamonds - and it leaves you with a hangover because it doesn't mean anything." ---------- I think this one of the rare times where I don't agree with something Mika's said. I think that for many of those artists who make the indulgent bling-laden hip-hop videos, that IS their life. I'm sure some of them DO ride around in Maseratis with gorgeous women. I think Mika's approach - taking an everyday theme, such as larger women, and then shining a spotlight on it - is almost MORE of an escapism than empty videos filled with bling and fast rides. His approach to taking the unglamorous and adding sequins, tassels, and children's-choir-chants until it becomes fabulous is way more accessible to your average person than the over-the-top excess depicted in the aforementioned hip-hop videos. Mika, drop by sometime! I'd love to discuss this whole concept with you poolside over a couple of margaritas.
  18. Hrm...Mikasounds still says the 23rd, hopefully it would be changed on there if the date were different?
  19. Awesome! Thanks for posting, and an extra thanks for translating!
  20. Hey Snowy, There's an FAQ thread in the works that should help to answer some of your questions: http://www.mikafanclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3514 Happy Mika-ing!
  21. If you're bothered by that, why not PM the person who posted them and politely ask him/her not to post photos that they find on Flickr, and to edit their post to delete your photos? And if your photos are personal and/or you don't want them shared, why not make them friends only on your Flickr account? There's no reason to come out with your teeth gnashing and start calling people immature. We're all Mika fans, we're all sort of united in that way - why create undue animosity?
  22. Ah, one of my fave songs of all time. I also quite like "Agadoo." Maybe I just have a predilection for annoying music.
  23. I think we established a long time ago that when we say "we don't care" we mean "we don't care one way or the other about his sexuality; it won't have any impact in terms of our appreciation for his music" - NOT we don't care as in, we have no interest, and won't discuss aspects of Mika's life aside from his music that should happen to come to light. Obviously the people here are interested in whatever bits of himself that Mika chooses to divulge. Secondly, if you take the time to read, you'll find out that there's a bit of a consensus here that we don't post paparazzi pics that invade Mika's privacy. The photos you find here are either taken by legitimate journalists or the fans themselves at public appearances. Finally, don't you find it a bit inflammatory to join an online community and immediately pronounce its members to be immature, and suggest we grow up? The atmosphere among the 5,000 or so people who have joined this community is overwhelmingly positive. If you are offended by the course of conversation here, I personally invite you to navigate away from the site to something that suits your personal tastes. No one is forcing you to read any of the threads here, or frankly, anything on this site at all. I really don't appreciate you showing up here and suddenly making judgemental comments about our membership. Many people use Mika's music as a form of escapism, and if that extends to using this community as a form of escapism, we are perfectly entitled to do that. Again - no one is forcing you to be on this site. Here, I'll give you a link to help you navigate away to something you might find less controversial: http://www.gardenersnet.com/flower/daisy.htm
  24. Can I check myself in? I most certainly need to get therapy for my Mika-obession! Oh, are there any rooms with padded walls available?
  25. MTV UK posted a short review of the Manchester gig here:http://www.mtv.co.uk/channel/mtvuk/28062007/mika_in_manchester Looks like the forum ate it the first time I tried to post it - my apologies! Exclusive: The Grace Kelly singer tells us he’s teaming up with The Gossip’s Beth Ditto at a gig for Vodafone TBA … Mika played an ultra secret show in Manchester last night and gave us an exclusive interview. Speaking before the show the flamboyant star told us: “I like doing all different types of gigs to shake things up. It’s important to make shows fun.†And when we asked if he was a fan of The Gossip Mika- whose new single is called Big Girl- said: “Beth Ditto is immense she’s one of the most enigmatic lead women in the world at the moment. “We’re trying to do a duet together at one of the festivals this summer. We’re just gonna see if we can pull it off logistically.†The singer of hits like Love Today asked fans to arrive at the Great Northern Square venue in fancy dress. We spotted a gorilla, two Red Indians, clowns and much more in the crowd. Mika’s gig was taking place for Vodafone as part of their TBA series of live shows.
