Official MIKA and MIKA FANCLUB FAQ

JackViolet

Recommended Posts

A while ago, some discussions went on that resulted in requests for an official, comprehensive FAQ section for these forums. Since then, with the help of several other members, I've been working on compiling the FAQ. I have previously sent a work-in-progress version to Freddie and Dcdeb, but I have now finished the first full draft of the completed FAQ, and I am posting it for peer review.

If you have anything that you feel should be added, or if you think some of the questions should be changed in any way (whether in terms of content or wording), please post your critiques here. I'd like to especially solicit opinions on the Forum Rules statement, and the questions dealing with moderators. After the FAQ is finalized, we hope that deano can put it up as an official section of the MFC.

Also, a big round of thanks to everyone who contributed to the research and work that went into this: Yoppapop (for her initial version), Scut_Monkey, Christine, Lollipop_money, and Dcdeb!

I know it's been a long time in coming, but I think you'll see why it took me forever to compile it... :naughty:

I'm going to have to split it up into several posts.

MikaFanclub FAQ:

Forum Rules:

The MFC is a world-wide community of fans, and as such it is important that we make sure to treat everyone with respect and contribute to an open, comfortable atmosphere for all posters. Hateful language, including but not limited to racist, sexist and/or bigoted speech is prohibited here. Personal insults or attacks are also prohibited, and will result in a ban from the forums. Posts containing obscene or pornographic material will be deleted, and can also lead to a ban.

While adult topics are not directly prohibited here, and there is room for mature discussion on such themes, there is also a large contingent of younger members, some under 13. Keeping in mind MFC’s universal audience, we ask members to avoid swearing, explicit sexual posts, or other content that may be inappropriate at personal discretion.

As MFC is working on becoming the official Mika fan club, we encourage members to conduct themselves as representatives of the Mika fan community. Mika, his management and his family are also known to read these boards at times. Since Mika’s family are not public figures, posting photographs of them that are not officially taken at publicity events, or soliciting personal information on them is strongly discouraged.

Sharing of any MP3s (official, demos, etc) except live recordings at shows is forbidden, and any such links will be deleted immediately. Sharing of other copyrighted material except for album artwork (DVD rips, etc) is also not allowed, and will be deleted.

Further details here.

The current site administrators are FREDDIESDOUBLE and StandardToaster. If you have an issue with the site that cannot be solved by the moderators, you can contact them via PM.

In-jokes:

15. What does everyone mean by “chicken”?

“Chicken” is a term coined in the oldling thread, meaning “sex.” It has since spread to the rest of the forum and even Mika is aware of it and what it means. You can read the full story on that here.

16. What does “knitter,” “knitting” or “knitty” mean?

“Knitter” means “pervert,” and “knitting” means to be perverse or naughty. It originated in this thread, which was started in response to this one.

17. What is the “Apple pose”?

One of Mika’s most frequent photo poses, where he tilts his head back and opens his mouth slightly. This is not a term made up on MFC; rather it comes from a bit of popular modeling advice to “look like you’re biting an apple.”

18. Is that the same as “the apples”?

No, the apples have nothing to do with the “apple pose.” The apples call themselves that in tribute to the Appleman, who shall remain both honored and mysterious.

Mika FAQ:

The basics:

1. What’s Mika’s real name?

Mika’s full legal name is Michael Holbrook Penniman. He was named after his father, but has always been called Mica because his mother wasn’t keen on the whole “junior” thing.

2. Why did he change it to “Mika”?

He changed it from “Mica” to “MIKA” as a stage name, because people who didn’t know him kept mispronouncing the former as “Meescha” or “Maika.”

3. What’s Mika’s nationality?

Mika is half-Lebanese and half-American, and he currently holds both British and American citizenship. He considers himself British.

4. When and where was Mika born?

Mika was born in Beirut, Lebanon on August 18, 1983.

5. How tall is Mika?

Mika is around 6’3” (he jokes that it’s 6’4” counting his hair), or around 188-191 cm tall.

6. How much does Mika weigh?

Around 161 lbs or 73 kg.

7. Where does he live now?

Mika lives in the South Kensington neighborhood of London, in his parents’ basement flat.

Additional:

8. What’s Mika’s vocal range?

Although others have claimed to be anywhere from 4 to 5 octaves, Mika says it is really a little over 3.5 octaves.

9. Is Mika gay?

Mika refuses to discuss his sexuality with the media because he considers it irrelevant, and a part of his private life that he does not feel the need to share. It has been speculated that he may be gay, but until he decides to tell the public himself, we cannot know what his sexuality is for sure.

10. Is Mika dyslexic?

Yes, Mika has said that he’s been diagnosed with dyslexia, which caused him troubles in school and in reading, spelling, telling time, etc. However, he has dealt with his dyslexia and is now an avid reader, though he remains an unconventional speller. ;-) He has also said that his dyslexia caused him to be incapable of reading sheet music, although medically it is a different issue and has nothing to do with dyslexia proper. It has also been questioned whether Mika’s learning disability was actually dyslexia and not something else, because according to him, he started having trouble reading and writing after a traumatic bullying experience, whereas dyslexia is a genetic condition and not caused by trauma.

11. Does Mika have OCD?

OCD, or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, is a psychiatric disease that causes involuntary obsessive thoughts that lead to compulsive actions. The compulsions most commonly manifest themselves in things like counting, meticulous cleaning, inventing rituals or performing other repetitive actions. In people diagnosed with OCD, the disease is severe enough that it often interferes with living a normal life. Mika has said that he has OCD and that it causes him to do thing like buy 3 pairs of any clothing item, but since “OCD” has entered casual usage as a reference to meticulousness, it is possible that he meant he has OCD traits rather than full OCD. A person can manifest a lot of OCD traits without necessarily having the disorder.

12. How many languages does Mika speak?

Mika speaks English and French fluently, has some knowledge of Spanish, and has said he can speak a little bit of Arabic. He also studied Mandarin Chinese in school for several years, but says he has forgotten everything.

Yes, Mika has said that his left eye tends to be slightly “lazy” unless makes an effort to keep it properly focused. You can see it in some photos.

15. Does Mika wear glasses or contacts?

Yes, Mika usually wears contacts, but you can sometimes also spot him wearing stylish prescription glasses, especially before and after shows.

Yes, he was a boy soprano at the Royal Opera House in London. You can hear him sing the part of the Woodcutter’s Boy on the Royal Opera House CD recording of The Pilgrim’s Progress.

18. Who is Perez Hilton, and what does he have to do with Mika?

Perez Hilton is a celebrity blogger who runs a gossip site at http://www.perezhilton.com. He championed Mika as “the next big thing” to his readers, and is credited with helping along Mika’s American success. Mika met Perez soon after Perez’ initial mention of him, and they have become good friends.

35. Who is the woman doing the voice in “Grace Kelly”?

A professional actress was auditioned to provide a spoken-voice sample for the song to “sound like” Grace Kelly. However, Mika is the one who recorded the lines “getting angry doesn't solve anything” and “Humphrey we're leaving,” with the key of the recording altered so as to put it in feminine pitch.

36. Who is the child doing the voice in “Lollipop”?

Mika’s young cousin Audrey Moukataff.

37. Who is the woman speaking in “Any Other World”?

Ida Falk Winland, a fellow classmate from the Royal College of Music.

39. Who directed Mika’s music videos?

Sophie Muller directed the music videos for “Grace Kelly” and “Love Today.” “Happy ending” was directed by the duo AlexandLiane. Bonzom, a studio comprising of 5 French animators, directed “Lollipop.”

40. Who is the little girl in the “Grace Kelly” video?

The video director’s (Sophie Muller’s) daughter Holly Muller. She is also the little girl being put in the cake in the “Love Today” video.

41. Where can I find the lyrics to Mika’s songs?

Lyrics are available on line, but an official version of the lyrics to Life in Cartoon Motion was included in the booklet of the Japanese album edition. Lyrics to individual songs not on the album itself (either from single b-sides or new songs that have been performed live but not yet released) are also put up on MFC by fans.

You can find them by using the forum search function for “song name” plus “lyrics.”

42. What are “Holy Johnny,” “How Much Do You Love Me” and “Century Man”?

These are all new songs said to have been written for Mika’s next album. “Holy Johnny” and “How Much Do You Love Me” have been incorporated into Mika’s regular live performances, while as “Century Man” has only been performed once, at a private show in New York after Mika’s appearance on Good Morning America.

43. I have found the names of some songs attributed to Mika that are not on the album or on any of the singles. What are they?

Mika recorded a number of demos for Life in Cartoon Motion that did not make it onto the final album. These were leaked some time ago, and have made their way around the internet. They are not official releases, and Mika prefers that people do not share them further, since these are unfinished versions of the songs, and he may want to release them in another format at another time. MFC members prefer to comply with Mika’s wishes on the subject, and discuss only officially released songs, or songs that have been performed live.

44. Who does the artwork for Mika’s album and CD covers?

Mika sketches the initial designs, and his sister Yasmine (going by the pseudonym DaWack) hand-paints them. Mika and Yasmine also worked with the design company Airside (http://www.airside.co.uk/) to develop the layout and design ideas for the album.

41. Is it possible to meet Mika after a gig? How?

Mika often makes himself available to speak with fans after his performances although it is never guaranteed that you will be able to meet him at any one particular gig. Circumstances vary depending on how he is feeling, venue security and whether you are in the right place at the right time.

Normally the “right place” is at the artist’s entrance where he is likely to come out approximately 30 minutes to 2 hours after the show. Patience is the key so if you are determined to meet Mika you should plan to stay at the venue long after the show has ended.

42. Who is the woman who sings Happy Ending with Mika on tour?

Since the Dodgy Holiday Tour began in October 2007, Saranayde (Sara Skeete) has been singing background vocals for Mika, including Happy Ending. Mika’s friend Lorna Bridge accompanied him during earlier performances but has since gone back to school to continue her musical studies.

43. Who are Mika’s Big Girls?

Mika has had many Big Girls - some professional, some family and some even fans! The two main dancers performing with Mika on stage and appearing at promotional events in Europe are Ophelia Bitz and Ali Richards. They are also featured in the Big Girl video in blue corsets.

Girls from the audience have been asked before the show to don the Big Girl costumes and dance on stage in the US and other places where the professional dancers weren’t available.

44. What’s the deal with those flashing hearts?

Wearing flashing hearts at gigs has become an MFC tradition. It is a way for MFC members to recognize each other and identify themselves to Mika and the band. A special discount has been negotiated with The Glow Company for MFC members worldwide. Details on ordering the flashing hearts can be found here: http://www.mikafanclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6520

45. How long do you have to queue to get first row places?

The length of time required to queue varies with the venue and the city. As Mika’s popularity has grown, queuing times to get into the front row have increased to as many as 6 or 7 (or even 10+!) hours before the doors open, especially in cities like London where a large number of MFC members attend the shows.

Check in the gig thread to get an idea of when MFC members plan to start queuing for the gig you will be attending. Check with the venue to find out what time the doors will open. In most cases you will need to arrive at least 2 hours before the doors open.

46. If I see Mika after his show, can I touch his hair?

No, you should probably not. Many Mika fans will tell you that he is friendly and prone to spontaneous hugs, but he finds it odd when strangers want to touch his hair.

47. Who is that camera man following Mika?

Mika’s cameraman, most recently identified as “Andy”, has been on hand during the Dodgy Holiday Tour. Andy regularly interviews fans about their experiences travelling from gig to gig and films Mika and the audience during the concerts. We don’t know at this point what Mika plans to do with the footage.

48. Who is Mika’s manager? Who is his tour manager?

Mika’s manager, Jerry Blair, is based out of the US and Jerry accompanies Mika while he’s in North America. John is his tour manager and works with Mika in America and Europe.

49. How can I find out when and where Mika will be touring?

Mika’s MySpace page should list his confirmed upcoming dates, but for the latest information and discussions check the MFC calendar. There will be a separate thread for each date in the Concerts, Gigs, Tours and Performances forum. You can search for the thread in the forum or access it via a link in the calendar.

Thank you!

And yes, I want everyone's opinions.

For instance, it's been brought to my attention that maybe we should not reveal as much contact information for Mika's management as I have. I just re-checked some sources, and the email addresses seem to be pretty general-access, and I think having a management address be available is fairly standard practice, but perhaps the phone numbers should be omitted. Depending on what people decide, I will edit my initial post (or the mods can edit it at their discretion if they feel there is definitely too much info up now).

Har har har. :sneaky2: Do you know how much vetting went into all of this? I tried to double-check everything, even the general-knowledge questions.

Oh, and again--if any mods feel that we should remove any of the information available now until we make a decision either way on the issue, feel free to exercise ye Modly powers. :wink2:

Wow... very detailed...

I just wanted to mention 2 things:

1. It might be worth mentioning that you can only have 2 pictures in your sig

2. Maybe it's an idea to mention that we don't allow MP3s of the demos, or of any other songs (unless it's live stuff) on the site... I only mention it cause I found a thread with a download link to Satellite in it and I had to delete the link and close the thread...

Other than that, it's bloody awesome (I agree about the phone numbers and email for management)...

Oh, right! I shall add the first two points right away! (Still waiting on others to weigh in on the phone number issue.)

The only thing about Jerry's details is that, as far as I know, they are publicly available online (at least, the email is the general-inquiry email of the Fuerte group). It gets murkier with the address and phone numbers: however, most artists have the management forward their mail and provide management info to be contacted on their behalf. As far as I know that's fairly standard practice.

On the other hand, I don't think the phone number is as widely available, and I agree that there's not really a need for it to be disseminated here.

So... email ok, address ok, phone number redacted?

Or address redacted as well?

Hmmmmm ... to answer this , I would say ..... basically it seems to be all about ppl wanting to send presents/cards/gifts to Mika .... which up until now ... has NOT been possible .... perhaps management needs to set up an 'address' ... for fans ..... a Post Office Box or something ????

Also ... email ...... why should Jerry be swamped ... ??? I dunno .... maybe management could get MORE organized to receive this stuff ...... ???!!!

:naughty: :naughty: ... I suspect 'they' weren't 'suspecting' HOW popular Mika would become in such a short time ..... i.e. MFC ... :wink2: !!!!!

Cool, thanks...

if anything, maybe the email... but I agree with Freds, take it off, you could add it later... I'm just worried they'll get bopmbarded with emails from people wanting to contact Mika... maybe we might need to reiterate that it's the management company's addy, and not to send personal Mika messages to it...
