JackViolet Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 This is a thread for recommendations of things (books, movies, musicians, artists, food, clothes, etc) that you think other people simply MUST discover, if they haven't already. This is not--I repeat, not--the place to just post about your favorite books, movies, musicians, artists, food, clothes, etc. The thing you recommend, besides being something that you like, must be something that you feel will be near-universally appealing to as wide an audience as possible, truly a "must-try." It should also be something that you would expect most other people to not know/have tried. So! To start off with, I recommend: 1. The New Pornographers (band) http://www.myspace.com/thenewpornographers Especially: Mass Romantic, Challengers Because: They are amazing. Unless you: Don't like good music! ha. 2. David Bowie (musician) For instance. Especially: Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Station to Station, "Heroes," Scary Monsters Because: The man is a legend, and has as many musical styles as most people have socks (and helped start half of them). Technically, I should expect most people to know him, but I've been surprised lately. Unless you: only like modern superficial pop or else alternative mechanical dischordant non-lyric-based music 3. Fresh Basil (herb) Like so. Especially: with tomatoes and hummus, or tomato-or avocado-based food in general Because: It smells and tastes delicious Unless: You don't like eating green things. --Jack
celien Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I recommend: Hooverphonic Especially: The songs "Eden", "Out of sight", "Mad about you", "We all float",... Because: this Belgian group has music that is different from most other artists, the music is really beautiful and I really recommend it. Last year I saw them live and that was one of the first times I heard them (shame on me) and then I bought the cd "best singles 96-06" and it's really fantastic! Unless: you don't like good music (srry jackViolet, I stole it from you ) here's the link to their website: http://www.hooverphonic.com/ and some songs: "Eden" "Out of sight" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD_yD6d0zBU "Mad about you" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4gMc15bD_0 Enjoy!
vanessa Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I recommend Black kids Here they are with Kate Nash http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KdqD_mijWOo Here there is their video for 'I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend ' http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vaa4eGOtrTg&feature=related Hit the Heartbreaks http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8aaTFRum4_s&feature=related Especially the songs I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend ,hurricane jane and Hit the Heartbreaks Because they are great and I highly recommend it Unless you like pop indie music
JackViolet Posted May 13, 2008 Author Posted May 13, 2008 Celien: Awesome! I shall go try them right away. Edit: I like! Vanessa: unless I like indie pop music? I do, does that mean I won't like the band? --Jack
rilo8913 Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Ooh this is fun. 1. Coconut Records http://www.myspace.com/coconutrecords Especially: West Coast, Nighttiming Because: It's catchy indie pop. Unless: You prefer heavy metal as opposed to this more mellow stuff. 2. Ghostland Observatory http://www.myspace.com/ghostlandobservatory Especially: Any of the songs on their Myspace are great, but I really like... Sad Sad City, Dancing on my Grave Because: They are from Austin and are awesome. No, really, they make infectious electro-ish, danceable, funky music. Unless: You don't like synthesizers or cape-wearing drummers. 3. Olive Tapenade (fresh, not from a jar) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapenade (It doesn't really photograph well, but it tastes good.) Because: It's yummy spread on pita or other types of breads. Unless: You hate olives.
JackViolet Posted May 13, 2008 Author Posted May 13, 2008 Mmmmm, Rilo, I love tapenade! I like metal as well, but I love quirky indie pop, so I'll check your recs out post-haste. Haha. See, my enjoyment of symphonic/power/melodic death metal is why I didn't just make it a favorites thread. I don't think most of MFC would like it as much as I do... or hardcore Celtic punk, though both are great! --Jack
pinkunicorn123 Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I recommend a film called The United States of Leland Stars Ryan Gosling, Don Cheadle, Kevin Spacey and the 'jock' from American Pie. A good film, slightly morbid, but hey.
celien Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Celien: Awesome! I shall go try them right away. Edit: I like! Vanessa: unless I like indie pop music? I do, does that mean I won't like the band? --Jack Great Hooverphonic is really my favourite group from my country
JackViolet Posted May 13, 2008 Author Posted May 13, 2008 Rilo, I love your recommendations! Send me your CD collection. I recommend: 1. Wearing gray and a light, bright color. Like gray and pastel pink. Or gray and light lemon yellow. Looks awesome. --Jack
LadyGodiva Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Rilo, I love your recommendations! Send me your CD collection. I recommend: 1. Wearing gray and a light, bright color. Like gray and pastel pink. Or gray and light lemon yellow. Looks awesome. --Jack I agree with that, it's a good combonation. I like the New Pornographers also, listening right now :thumb_yello: I recommend: Making your own Jewelry Especially; Things with sparkles and bright colors. Necklaces, bracelets, rings, anything. Because; It's easy, fun, feels good to know you made what you are wearing, it looks good, and nobody else has anything like it. Unless; You're completely hopeless with home crafts. (Even if you think you are, you probably aren't, just try it =])
Ioana Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I recommend: 1. Wearing gray and a light, bright color. Like gray and pastel pink. Or gray and light lemon yellow. Looks awesome. --Jack The gray yellow has been one of my favorites for a long long time but try gray and light blue I recommend: Baby Carrots So good to munch on ,especially when bored, always better than oil soaked chips
Suzy Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I recommend the glowy, dewy look on your face, rather than trying to "bronze" yourself with a fake looking tan. This cream does wonders! M.A.C. Strobe Cream "The ultimate quick fix for the skin. Super-powered with potent botanicals; de-snoozes, de-stresses, moistens, freshens and boosts the look of dull, flat or tired-looking skin with a fully loaded vitamin zap and a mega dose of green tea. Brightens and clarifies with iridescent particles and antioxidants. Enhances the effects of light on all skin and in all lighting conditions from sunlight to spotlight."
Christine Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 3. Fresh Basil (herb)Like so. Especially: with tomatoes and hummus, or tomato-or avocado-based food in general Because: It smells and tastes delicious Unless: You don't like eating green things. I think I know who that green comment is directed at. I had some basil at lunch today. It was lovely!
rilo8913 Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 On the subject of clothing, I recommend... Pairing a black dress (knee-length or shorter with the spring weather) with either a colorful shrug, a different type of little sweater, or a button-down shirt. Anything works, but I especially like making the colors contrast a lot. Lately I've been a fan of wearing a black, flowy linen v-neck dress that's a bit above my knee with those options. It's great because it looks cute and it's like several outfits in one. (This of course would also work with any other solid piece, not just dresses).
Fmbm Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I need a list of really good books. The kind that when you read them you never want to put them down. please and thank you
Suzy Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I need a list of really good books. The kind that when you read them you never want to put them down. please and thank you I might have mentioned it before in other threads: Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides.
findingmywords Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I recommend: Reading the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. I recommend: Listening to Regina Spektor. She's great That's all I can think of right now haha. Oh and I reccomend: Looking through magazines and reading books and listening to all kinds of music to look for inspiration for all types of things. Looking through magazines is nice to think of new outfit ideas out of stuff in your closet. Reading books can, inspire you.. (??) haha And music is just amazing.
JackViolet Posted May 14, 2008 Author Posted May 14, 2008 I recommend: Reading the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. If you like to read, then read those books! No offense, but a lot of my friends hate those books. They're in battles with those who like them. So I'm not sure they'd fit as a universal recommendation. I think you should only read them if you're into young adult romance fiction about glittery vampires in highschool. (That's what it's about right? And a lot of emo?) I heartily second the Regina Spektor rec, although I think she may not be everyone's cup of tea either... --Jack

Well, just for people to try it out and see if they like it. It is a young adult book, but it's good and if you want to give it a try then go ahead. It's a different kind of vampires than you would think.. and it's not necessarily emo.. it's just... dramatic. haha Regina is great, but some people think she's "weird"
Fmbm Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I might have mentioned it before in other threads:Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides. What's it about?

sariflor Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I like this idea Ok, a few from me: 1-Kickers shoes Check them out: http://www.kickers.co.uk Love, love, LOVE them!! I had them in all colours since I was small, and by far the best shoes in the world (IMO of course) These are my latest aquisition : 2-Porridge Made with soya milk and cinnamon, then adding banana at the end and a bit of honey and a sprinkle of mixed seeds on top. Yum! 3-A bit of music that I like I like these guys Dragonette: Specially "True believer" http://www.myspace.com/dragonetteband Sketchbeat: My bf is friends with one of the guys, Mike, and they are great live. Plus they are very good musically. I like "my Mama said". http://www.myspace.com/sketchbeat Emzy Collins: He reminds me a bit of Chris Isaak, and I especially like his song "sleep well". Plus he ain't bad looking either . http://www.myspace.com/emzycollins
violet_sky Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I need a list of really good books. The kind that when you read them you never want to put them down. please and thank you I second what Suzy said. Middlesex is one of the best books I've ever read. I don't have any supersecret special tips for most of what I read has made it to mainstream. Like everything by John Irving, especially 'A Prayer for Owen Meany', 'The Hotel New Hampshire', 'The World according to Garp' and 'The Cider House Rules'. The only book by him I never managed to find my way into is 'A Son of the Circus'. Paul Auster is a great storyteller, I loved Mr. Vertigo and Moon Palace. Not the New York Trilogy. It's either just sick or I'm too dumb to get it. What else? Wally Lamb, Matt Ruff. And always and forever Nick Hornby.
Yoppappop Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 how can you be sure that what you recommend according to your personal tastes is gonna be "universal" ? already happened with the books findingmywords recommended, and it will happen again... appart from that, i recommand Katy Perry knowing that obviously not everybody gets the humour in her songs according to youtube population stats
