Our industry insider, India shares the gossip, glitz and goings on at Mencap’s Little Noise Sessions

By Cosmopolitan 20.11.2009,

Session 3: Wednesday 18 November

Acts: Mika, Paloma Faith, Alex Gardner

Very annoyingly a train nightmare meant I was late and missed the first act Daisy Dares You, who everyone raved about. I was gutted!

Luckily I spoke to her afterwards, shot some photos and she was lovely. So fun and down to earth, with a great sense of individual style, I'm definitely going to see her on tour.

Sadly, Paloma Faith had to pull out of the gig completely last minute. Although she wasn't very well, she had rehearsed her whole set and had her beautiful wardrobe were at the venue but she then completely lost her voice and couldn't perform. Rubbish!

Next on was Alex Gardner, who recently toured with Paolo Nutini and you can tell he's picked up a few tricks. The stage was lit with candles in jars, which have decorated the stage throughout his acoustic tour. The 18 year old Edward Cullen-esque singer and his 3 piece band (including a particularly nice drummer) delivered a soothing set, with raw, gentle vocals and melodic songs. I chased them around for a picture for ages, and finally caught one with Alex and Jo, which he seemed very happy with. His only request was "As long as you make me look good!"

I've been so excited about seeing Mika again as I saw him at the Little Noise Sessions 3 years ago when he was a smaller artist who hadn't even released a single and he absolutely blew me away! He's my complete guilty pleasure. Mika came on stage with a Men's Madigle choir, The King Singers, a trumpet player, and a gorgeous girl with amazing hair and they all completely blew the crowd away. He's the one artist who never fails to embrace the Union Chapel and works with the acoustics, drumming on bins, smashing lids together, getting the crowd standing on pews and singing the lyrics back to him.

?module=images&func=display&fileId=48631 He can swap between playing haunting beautiful and enchanting songs with a choir and playing piano, to lively, poppy tracks and gives some of the most energetic performances I've seen. It just shows the true talent he holds. He finished on Lollypop that built up to an amazing end and the crowd went nuts! Sighs of sadness were heard when he left the stage but everyone was completely enthralled.

After the gig I was lucky enough to get some photos of Mika, who is absolutely beautiful and knows how to pose for the camera. He's so charming and sweet, being fantastic with my little brothers, who idolise him. He even got out numerous pairs of unique Christian Loubiton trainers, chatting about them to the boys. All in all, I love Mika. Such a good night. India X

Trumpet player?

The only trumpeting came from Mika, was she at the same gig? :naughty:

It's nice to hear it from her perspective though - gives a slightly different spin on things, meeting him backstage afterwards, him chatting with her brothers etc. And she seems to adore him (though there should be nothing guilty about it, despite what she says).

Thanks for posting!

It just means he does such a brilliant imitation of a trumpet she doesn't know the difference, maybe???

I have to point out the word she is looking for is MADRIGAL singers. But the Kings Singers are really more than that I think.:wink2:

Yeah, maybe she didn't have a massively clear view so she assumed he had a trumpeter on stage with him. :aah:

Yeah, there are a few word-related mistakes, though I think we can let her off - she's 17 and it looks like it's been lifted from a blog and Cosmopolitan have printing rights to it. They should have some sort of editor though, surely?

This may sound strange, but it's only since this gig, and now this review, that I have realised that Jo whiley DOES actually genuinely love Mika . Obviously I know she's always been sweet to him and about him, on her radio shows etc, but the total cynic in me always sneakily thought..yeah yeah :sneaky2:. Well, can you blame me? Let's be honest here..:dunno:

Now I realise she really is one of the very few true champions of Mika's unique talent out there in UK radio land. Great.

And her daughter has impeccable taste too, what a fab review :wub2:

Ha' date=' I told ya (all the haters) Mika deserves good words and he will get them! :biggrin2: A very nice thing to read, thanx.

BTW, who is India? Should I know her?

She's Jo Whileys daughter.

She's done a great review there, her mum should be proud:thumb_yello:

I think of all the R1 dj's, Jo and Sara Cox, are massive Mika fans, and always support him.

Adorable review - thanks for posting! But, if I had to nitpick, Mika shouldn't be a 'GUILTY pleasure' - why feel 'guilty' about thinking he's amazing, when he so clearly is, or liking him so much, LOL??!

I think I remember Jo saying something once about India being into more guitar based bands (this is a child, that once had a bedtime story read to her by Chris Martin of Coldplay), so I think she looks on Mikas kind of music as a guilty pleasure, because of that.
