When it comes to winning Dancing with the Stars, skill is only part of the equation; you also have to be “popular” with the viewers at home – so it’s only fitting that Ariana Grande and Mika paid the ABC competition show a visit Oct. 21 to perform a song of the same name!

 

The impossibly adorable duo lightened the mood on the otherwise tense episode — as if any episode of this show isn’t tense – with a bubbly performance of their song, which samples “Popular” from the Broadway musical Wicked.

 

A track on Mika’s third studio album The Origin of Love, “Popular Song” originally featured vocals by Priscilla Renea, but she was eventually replaced by Ariana to make the song more marketable in the United States.

 

Ariana looked adorable in a navy sweater and very short black skirt. Her long legs were covered with black tights. She wore sparkly gold eyeshadow and wore her hair half up in her signature curls. She also rocked a cat ear headband. She looked gorgeous and happy on stage.

 

Mika looked sharp in a blue suit with a black skinny tie and white shirt. They make a great pair and sounded so good together.

Just when we thought Dancing With the Stars 2013 couldn't get any better, pop princess Ariana Grande and Mika stopped by to perform on Season 17, Week 6! After grueling performances from all of our favorite pairs, it was nice to relax and watch the troupe dancers do their thing while these two took the ballroom by storm.

 

Their new duet "Popular Song" is featured on Ariana's album Yours Truly, but it was originally on Mika's The Origin of Love. It is based on the song "Popular" from Wicked and will actually be featured on an upcoming anniversary CD for the musical, out October 29.

 

While sometimes performers don't sound their best on DWTS, these two hit it out of the park with their harmonies, Ariana's insanely high notes, and their fun stage presence. The only thing that would have been better about their performance? If they were the ones singing during the "Switch-Up Challenge," perhaps singing a bunch of pop hits (and classic songs) one by one. Maybe in a dream world.

what's with those cat ears? usually i'm always for costumes, but together with mika's super-smart look i just found that weird. or does it have to do anything with the tv show? anyway i much preferred her look on jay leno, and also the "feel" of the jay leno performance. but technically the song was perfect this time.

I think she went last night to Halloween Horror Nights at the Universal Studios theme park, so she was just getting a head start on dressing up.

The character on her own TV show is named Cat so maybe it's a shoutout to that but I thought it was just generally halloween-y and thought she looked really cute. Sure Mika looks great but it's not like anyone seriously walks around in a blue velvet suit and a pompadour so he was more or less in costume himself IMO. I found the dancers were the most inappropriate because they looked so Vegas tacky which is fine for a certain style of dance but it really clashed with their choreography and neither the dancing nor the costumes suited the song. I think Ariana is cute enough to get away with just about anything and I am just thankful she does not dress like a porn star or a hooker like some other 20 year old pop singers who shall remain nameless.

It's normal for girls her age to dress as a cat for Halloween. The clubs in North America will be full of girls in black cat costumes this weekend. And by costumes I mean a cute minidress and some cat ears. I did it myself when I was 19 or 20.

Did anyone notice Ari's laugh after 'dunk me in the toilet now it's you that cleanse them'? She looked like she was secretly saying "Don't miss your part this time, Mika!" You know, something was off when they sang 'make me feel bad with the things you do' on Jay Leno, like one of them forgot to sing that part... I think that it was Mika who forgot that This time, Mika got it right! (I don't know... Mika's so cute when he makes mistakes:teehee:)

Anyway, they sounded so great this time! I had a little heart attack when I saw Mika with his blue suit and his gorgeous hair... Ari looking so cute and pretty as usual...

They should perform together more:))))

I was actually thinking the same, her school girl image IS very cute and it fits their duet, Mika is clearly older anyway.

Yes even in England. I don't know what it's like now but when I lived there in the 90s it wasn't anything like Canada. I always assumed Halloween shared an English tradition like our Christmas does, but it's clearly a North American thing. Everyone in England was more focused on Bonfire Night the following week.

Yes, I commented on it several pages ago. I still think they got it wrong this time, that's why Ariana giggled a bit. Mika actually sings the word "Hid" and then backs off when he sees Ariana is taking the line, so I'm not sure who was supposed to sing, but yeah, there was a little mistake there. But quick recovery.

OK - that sounds sweet and innocent, thanks for info Yesterday these items were in some shops here for Halloween celebration : Bloody, cut off, very natural-looking human hands and feet, packed in platic, and laid in shelfs like fresh or frozen meat!! A lot of people got nuts, protested through radio programs and newspapers, and found it just too awful and tasteless - so today everyhing of these bloody Halloween items were removed from the shops, luckily It was of course very scary for kids, and imo, terrible disrespectful for people - coming from conflicts and wars, where such horror is for real ...

Yes it always takes away from him unfortunately. I don't know about everyone else but I am almost always drawn to the woman in any kind of male/female performance - whether it's singing or dancing or pairs skating. If a man is outshining the woman then she is probably not good enough to be performing with him.

I have to say however that I don't particularly enjoy his performances with Ariana. That's mainly because I don't like her voice and her way of singing, and because everything sounds too 'glossy' to me, if you know what I mean. I love Popular Song with Priscilla because it has a deep meaning conveyed in a very ironical and 'caustic' way, not only in the lyrics but also in the way they both sing.

When Mika sings it live I love it because he 'plays' with the song, he can balance and convey through his performance both the seriousness and the irony, and the song sounds very 'true' to me, it has a strong 'grip' (not sure if it is the right word but you get my point)

With Ariana the performance is good, enjoyable, indeed very cute, but it doesn't sound nearly as interesting to me.

There's no one to blame, it is not due to any objective mistakes, it is just my subjective impression, since I don't like their recorded version either.

 

Having said that, one can't certainly deny that the performance was good and cute, and really enjoyable 'as a whole'. and I'm happy if this gets a wider American audience to know him better, so that's good! (And basically the whole point of the collaboration, as someone pointed out)

yes, I agree.

I don't know what's worse between him being a judge in a talent show or singing in a fake duet with a singer coming directly from the seven dwarfs of Snowwhite. Both are so unnatural for me, when I think about the performer he is.

It all helps to get Mika better known in the US, and if the song is a hit in the US, then UK will take note.

But tbh I'm loving the duets between them. Not, of course, for them to do it all the time, but for now. They seem to have formed a genuine friendship too, which is a great thing. I know they were only put together by the record company, but it's paying off in many ways, and (as someone else has said) she is respectable, not dressing like a you-know-what to get attention. I think she looked really cute with the ears. I think it's worked out great.
