2015 - Place du Casino, Monte Carlo, Monaco - 29 Aug - REPORTS/PICS/VIDEOS

Yes, Place du Casino must be very challenging as a venue. I mean it's super special because the buildings and area are so fancy but it's not like usual open area venues. It's very complicated shape (with driveways, a giant fountain in the middle and two different VIP areas in front of stage) and controlling big crowds there must be much more difficult than in average.

There is a whole casino "circuit" in North America where artists tour all the casinos (they are forced to play a casino in rural Ontario in order to get a spot in Vegas for example). But they have purpose built venues inside the casinos, especially since the whole idea is to get people in there to gamble.

I have never seen this behaviour anywhere for any artist ever.

Working for concert security, i can assure you it's not as unusual as you think. :teehee: and i don't just mean boybands. Rihanna, for example. P!nk. Bruno Mars, Robbie Williams or Olly Murs, tho you could say those are one-man-boybands. :teehee: i'd say most artists who attract also a younger crowd, fill venues with several thousand people and don't have seated gigs, have fans who are queueing for hours.

Besides, a good security company is informed about how concerts of this artist usually go. They plan the security concept months in advance before a bigger gig, getting info from the artist's management about what to expect from the fans. Maybe it was just volunteers in monaco, or casino staff who would've preferred to deal with the usual rich VIP audience instead of a bunch of regular music fans / concert goers. After all, it was a free gig. But IF a security company does their job properly, they certainly should be aware of what to expect. :dunno:

I always wonder how other singers' fans behave. I expect it to be quite similar, this is why I also expect security to be prepared.

in Italy, I've seen ("hardcore") fans of other singers/bands (I talk about Bastille, Green day, Jovanotti, Stromae) behaving absolutely the same way  :wink2:

This is not a "venue" though, it's the driveway of a casino in Monte Carlo. And they put a dance floor in the front and gave people passes - with the obvious intention that people would dance. Why would anyone queue for 12 hours to go onto a dance floor? This makes no sense to me and I'm a Mika fan for heaven's sake. Why would staff at a casino have imagined that people would do this? Obviously a casino is not looking to attract younger patrons since they are in the business of gambling. Mika is not One Direction and I wouldn't expect anyone in Monte Carlo to anticipate fans travelling from Italy or even Paris to turn up to stand in the front row of this event. Especially when there was no front row but a dance floor.

As an aside, in my experience the security at venues have little to no familiarity with the artist (unless it is a massive show like Rihanna), muchless have researched how nuts their fans are. The manager of the Brooklyn venue in May for example didn't even know who Mika was. They are a dance club and treated it like a dance club event. Just like I'm sure this casino treated it like entertainment for their casino.

The bottom line is that shows like this are corporate events where Mika is the hired entertainment. They are not Mika gigs. And if fans don't like how it's organized I guess they should hire Mika themselves and organize it any way they want! :naughty:

Good to read that fans of other stars behave the same way. I always wonder about it but have seen many reports about Tokio Hotel ( at a time I never could imagine how these fans felt about their favourits ) nad Take That. So thank you for telling us your experiences as a security :wink2:

I don't think queueing was a big problem in Monte Carlo. Well most fans came a bit in advance, some fans in the morning, some during the day. Of course people did. It's quite rare to visit Monte Carlo. The event was organized to attract people to the casino and it was meant for Mika fans as much as for anyone who happened to be there that time. It was advertised everywhere and most people in the audience were tourists. I've visited Monte Carlo once before and did exactly the same thing I did this time while waiting for the show to start: took pictures of the sea, sat in a park eating ice cream and watched people driving in their fancy cars  :naughty:

I don't know about the others but I didn't write my comments to complain or to criticize anyone. I wrote them to describe the event and my experience so people who couldn't be there could have an idea how it was. And it looked to me they hadn't planned things properly and that gave an impression it was a bit poorly organized :dunno: However, it was still a very cool event at a special venue and I enjoyed the show and had a lot of fun not just during it but also before and afterwards  :)

Here are few videos I made at the concert of Monte Carlo ; the sound was not very good with many technical problems ; Mika did all he could do but at some point we could see how angry he was about these problems ; Especially on Staring at the Sun he was really furious and even shortened the song after having stopped a previous song at the intro ;

it was not an easy concert for him ;

I liked very much the Mika's concert in Montecarlo, but not the organization...

People with pass like me and people without pass, for hours and hours together, without know where we were to go... :(

In the end we arrived in front of the stage very tired!

It was a free concert and shorter than the others but I found Mika full of energy! :cheer:

We danced and sang with him from beginning to end... :thumb_yello:

I'm very happy to have met Corinne, K'mille, etc... and the other french and italian members of the MFC! They have been very kind to me! :france::italia:

I look forward to seeing the autumnal tour! :):wub:
