bump. i miss this thread.

i'm going to see rufus in exactly 4 weeks. i'm soooo excited about it, it's nice to have something to look forward to.

somebody is selling 2 orchestra section tickets for less than half the value for the next day (he's doing three days in a row). i'm so tempted to get them, but i'd have to find someone to come with me. and my family would think i'm nuts....

would definitely do it for a normal rufus show, but not sure if only getting 5 sonnets out of him is worth the trouble i'd have to go through...:teehee:

Think like this: :wink2: If I don't do it, will I regret it later?

They say that we only seem to regret the things we didn't do!:teehee:

Anyhow, have fun and enjoy his music and his stage persona and everything that makes this artist the fantastic person/singer he is!:wub2:

I envy you, I wish he would come back to Sweden, I couldn't go when he was here the last time.

And that I regret!!!!!:biggrin2:

About the family/nuts thing...I haven't told my family half of the things I've done for Mika.:blush-anim-cl:..wouldn't dream of it..:roftl:.you have an image to protect after all!:naughty:

thank you, sienna, i already found myself trying to talk one of my friends into it today...:teehee: but she can't and i don't know who else to ask...

you're right, i probably would regret it a little. i absolutely love 2 of the sonnets, and it would be great to see him two days in a row, plus my own tickets are so far away from the stage...these other ones would be much closer...

so glad to have another person here that keeps (half?) their obsessions to themselves...:roftl:

ok koolj5 :biggrin2: for what it's worth - I say you gotta go :thumb_yello: I don't know if you said which night you already had tickets for... but you should go the 12th - you probably know this already... but Rufus is part of a Q&A after that evening's performance

From the SF Symphony Website:

Off the Podium, an informal Q&A with Rufus Wainwright and Jeffrey Kahane, begins immediately after the November 12 performance.

Please be there for this :wink2:

^^ LOL is that a new pic?! What a beautiful goof.

ANYWHO, I've been reading all these amazing reviews about Rufus' Lulu tour and I am dying dying dying to see him again. I really need to see him on this tour. I don't know why he has been avoiding midwest america so much! :sneaky2:

well I don't know if you know about this... and it's a bit down the road... but while Rufus said he was taking a year off from touring... a couple random dates have popped up... and in the midwest... with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra :biggrin2:

from a Ravinia press release (where they mis-spelled his name:furious::furious:)

" Folk-rock musician Rufus Wainright will join CSO and conductor Jeffrey Kahane on August 14 for the Chicago premiere of Wainright's settings of Shakespeare's sonnets. It will share the bill with other classical works inspired by the Bard and a solo set by Wainright.

As of this writing, ticktets for the 2011 Ravinia season will only be available through the website, ravinia.org. For information call 847-266-5100."

I think tickets are onsale to members only at this time... and the general public sale is early in 2011...

here's a link

sorry for the wait, i needed to find the perfect time to write my report...:wink2:

in case anyone doesn't know, rufus was premiering 5 shakespeare sonnets with the san francisco symphony.

OMG, i had such a great time! it all was so perfect, that i didn't even want to come back the next night anymore because i didn't want to spoil my perfect experience... (didn't have a ticket anyway) :blush-anim-cl:

sorry, this might get long (i'm still :fangurl:).

my friends and i got there late. we were lucky to get the last spot in a paid parking lot (the symphony is next to the opera building, and both places were buzzing) but by the time we got inside the first segment had started. from what i heard and read in the reviews it was the weakest piece of the evening anyway, so we were ok with it.

we then got to our seats, and i was pleasantly surprised. i had one of the cheapest seats up on the second balcony, really far from the stage - but it turned out, since we were to the side, it actually was pretty close.

it all went really fast, he came in soon. he got a standing ovation right away. he looked great in a black shirt with flower pinned to it, dark pants, and the longer hair (so glad he hadn't cut it yet)...:wub2:

i was so excited because i'm now a much bigger fan than when i saw him the first time. and hearing him live is just such an incredible experience. plus the acoustics in that hall were beyond great, so his voice made me cry...

from where i was sitting i could see the facial expressions of the people on stage but i still kept being glued to my binoculars. i fully enjoyed watching all the emotions and expressions on his face while he was singing, i couldn't believe i was watching it in reality and not just on youtube...:blush-anim-cl:

i tried to take in as much as i could because i knew there were only five songs...

and they went quickly. i can't say much about the quality of the arrangement, i've heard and been to a lot of classical music when i was younger, but i'm not a specialist. i loved hearing his voice, and while i've heard three of the sonnets live on piano before, the two last ones were new to me, and they were interesting. he did quite a bit of falsetto in one of them (sonnet #129). anyways, it all sounded good to me, as i was focused on his voice...

as his part was over so fast, i was really glad to know that he would be back for the Q&A after the program. the third part, a symphony by kurt weill was enjoyable to listen to, and fun to see guest conductor michael francis conduct.

after that we were able to move down to the orchestra section since many people left. a radio journalist then interviewed rufus and michael francis, the conductor. rufus was in great shape, as always he made the audience laugh many times. the conductor made a point in praising rufus at every chance he got, talking about the quality of the music and the great experience he had working with him this week. people in the audience were asking questions, like, is he going to publish this work sometime (yes, he will), was there anyone who inspired him in composing the music for the sonnets (not sure i got the question right but he said, benjamin britten), was it intimidating attempting to write music for these sonnets (which got a quite funny response from rufus, who wanted to say 'my music can never take away from these words', but instead said 'the words can never take away from my music'...:naughty:). one of the most interesting questions was about his inspiration. he said, he gets his inspiration from not being afraid to stick his neck out (his words), from being vulnerable.

it was over quick, and we made our way to the stage exit which attracted quite a few people waiting. he came out pretty soon but was on his way to dinner, and said sorry guys, i got to run, i can only sign quickly. and so he did, and when it was my turn, i managed to say, 'please come back to california soon.' :teehee: he looked up at me and said, 'oh, i will. i practically live here now!' :swoon:

he then proceeded to the fan club members, but asked the whole crowd, how we'd liked it, and told us that the bbc had been there.

i left really really happy because i got all i hoped for, his signature and a tiny exchange, and of course, a great concert. even though it was so short compared to one of his gigs, i'm happy i got to go to the symphony, and realized it's time to listen to more classical music again...

i'm sad that the reviews haven't been so great for him, you can look them up for yourself, of course the classical music people find a lot to complain about. however, he filled the symphony with young people, too, and i choose to believe the conductor who really was in awe of rufus...

sorry this was long!

Yay - I'm so glad that you had a great time... And that the aftershow went a little smoother than the last time :thumb_yello:

I hope to get a chance to see it myself... although the reviews are somewhat mixed... they are beautiful pieces of work. And having the cheaper seats may have been all for the best - a friend of mine went to a couple of the performances - in the front orchestra - and 1 from up in the balcony - and he told me it was much better sound quality from above :thumb_yello:

Enjoy the afterglow! :rasta:

wow, thanks for the report! I like it being so long - gives me a chance to imagine it all, even the tiniest details (I didn't get to see him this year cause had an exam on the exact same day and had to give my ticket away... :( ) But I'm so glad for you! And the reviews - well, do they really matter when you've had such an amazing time? :fangurl:

well done Rufus! and thanks again for bringing this atmosphere here :wub2:

Thanks for your report! :flowers2: Sounds really interesting. I like the combination of a concert and an interview after that - great idea. I would love some of my fav. musicians in an interview directly after a gig...:wub2:

Enjoy the afterglow! :rasta:

:roftl: :roftl: I love that expression + smilie....

First of all, I'm so happy for you that you finally had an encountering with him that felt good for you.:wub2: It means lot as a fan, I'm the first one to know after all my more or less unsuccessful meetings with Mika.:naughty:

Classical music and a bunch of young people who usually not listen to music like that, fantastic! I love that!:thumb_yello:

Thank you for your funny and detailed report!:wink2:

thank you all for the feedback!

you're right vathorniel, of course it doesn't take away from my enjoyment what the critics think, i just wanted to give the whole picture, and why this was a pretty courageous thing to do for rufus... :thumb_yello:

my tiny exchange with him was really nothing (he was signing about 10 things at the same time) but that's really all i would ever hope for (this M&G thing is new to me, i went to dozens of gigs as a teenager and never met anybody after, so i don't think the artists HAVE to do this at all... :teehee:).

i'm not having any post gig depression (i do think a nice M&G helps against that :wink2:), and can't wait to see him again sometime.

in the meantime i'm really looking forward to more reports soon, since there are at least 2 MFC members who are going to see rufus in december!!! :biggrin2:

i'm sorry sienna, you should try planning on something small, like one sentence, and if it works out you'll be happy...:thumb_yello:

but meeting mika seems to be a whole different ball game... especially since he often seems to look at people and want to talk to them... i can imagine how well i would do with that...(not) :naughty:
